State will suggest partnership with city at Ahern Park

THE LACONIA DAILY SUN
LACONIA — The New Hampshire
Department of Resources and Economic
Development (DRED) will explore entering an agreement with the city to share the
management of Ahern State Park on Lake
Winnisquam.
When the commission studying the
future use of the property that formerly
housed the Lakes Region (Prison) Facility
met yesterday Bill Carpenter, who represents DRED on the panel, said that Commissioner George Bald has asked him to
begin working with the Division of Parks
on the terms of an agreement to present
to the city. Carpenter said that the process
has yet to begin and offered no details on
the nature of the agreement.
Mayor Matt Lahey welcomed the initiative, which he said followed a meeting
between Bald and city officials last month.
The meeting was prompted by the release
of a strategic plan for the state park and
historic sites by the Division of Parks and
Recreation in June.

contacted by the developers of Meredith Bay, who
are building high-end homes on Laconia’s Brickyard
Mountain overlooking The Weirs and Lake Winnipesaukee. They were invited to use the developers’
largest spec home, a 4,885 Adirondack-style home
positioned to make optimal use of the lot’s views.
Starting Sept. 19, the home will be available for
tours. Tickets cost $20 per person if purchased at
the door, or $15 if purchased though the website,

LACONIA — The Police
Department intends to construct a temporary firing
range on the state-owned
property on Parade Road
that until recently housed
a state prison.
“We need a range in the
city of Laconia, there’s no
getting around it,” Chief
Mike Moyer told the Police
Commission at its meeting
yesterday afternoon.
Officers are required to
train with firearms at least
once per year. The city used
to have a range located off
of Route 107, but that land
was sold to Gilbert Block.
Since then, Laconia officers
have been permitted to use
Gilford’s firing range, but
Moyer couldn’t say how
long his officers would be
welcome to use that facility.
Moyer and the Belknap
County Sheriff’s office
asked the state for permission to use the former
prison property for a temporary range, and permissee RANGE page 10

LACONIA — David Brody, a
member of the Laconia High School
Class of 1980, will be featured in a
documentary to be aired on Sunday
evening on the History Channel. The
two-hour program will begin at 8 p.m.
Titled “Holy Grail in America,” it will
discuss a number of artifacts found
in New England and Minnesota that
suggest that there were European
explorers of North America centuries
prior to Christopher Columbus.
It’s a curiosity of history that’s
well-known to Brody, who’s written a
novel “Cabal of the Westford Nights”
that incorporates the New England
artifacts into the story line. Brody is
interviewed in the documentary about
two sites in Massachusetts that he
researched for his novel. He said the
film makers did a good job on the film,
in which he is featured in a handful of
one-minute segments.
Brody is the son of Irene Gordon of
Laconia and Spencer Brody of Meredith. After graduating from LHS,
he studied English and International
Relations at Tufts University and
then studied law at Georgetown University. He currently works in real
estate law in Massachusetts.

MEREDITH — A man and a woman
were briefly trapped in a vehicle and
then taken to Lakes Region General
Hospital after the car they were in
rolled over on Parade Road on Thursday afternoon. The road was closed for
about 45 minutes.
Police reports state that just prior
to 1 p.m., Tricia Littlefield, 33, of
Tamworth lost control of the 2002
Chevrolet Cavalier she was driving.
The car went into a ditch on the side
of the road and flipped, coming to
rest upside-down. Littlefield and her
passenger, Ethan Boudreau, 30, of
Moultonborough, were trapped in the
vehicle until emergency responders
were able to free them.
Both Littlefield and Boudreau were
transported to the hospital for nonincapacitating injuries. The accident
remains under investigation.
SHOWCASE from page one
www.nhshowhouse.com. The house
will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
Wednesdays through Sundays and
Columbus Day Monday. The final day
for tours will be Oct. 19.
The first weekend will get things
rolling with an in-water boat show at
Akwa Marina Yacht Club. The show
will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
on Sunday. The ticket price of $25
includes a tour of the house as well as
entrance to the boat show. On Sunday,
Sept. 20, a “grill-off” will be held from
2 to 4 p.m. The tickets for a combined
tour and entrance to the grill-off will
cost $35. Patrick’s Pub, T-Bones and
the Wine’ing Butcher are the competitors in the event.
Organizer Marcy Yerkes expects
around 3,000 people to visit the event
by the time the final tour has ended.
Every room in the house has been
given the designer treatment. Furniture has been provided by local
retailers, most notably Harris Family
Furniture in Laconia and The Adirondack Store in Meredith. Artwork
hangs on the walls, rugs are placed
under foot and closets are staged with
clothing from Meredith boutiques.
All in all, Yerkes said there is hundreds of thousands of dollars in furnishings in the home, much of which
can be purchased from the designer.

However, Yerkes said the best part
of visiting the showhouse is that there
are many concepts that can be applied
within any budget — it’s the design,
not the dollars, that makes the room.
“People who come through this house
will learn how to decorate and not
spend so much money,” she said.
The most significant result of the
event, though, will be the one-time
shot of capital that it provides the
young local Boys & Girls Club. The
group has been in existence for a few
years, and as such has yet to reach a
point where its alumni have grown up
to be community leaders who can tell
the story of the club.
However, for David Southworth, the
developer of Meredith Bay, it’s a story
he’s well familiar with. Southworth
grew up in Scottsdale, Ariz., with two
working parents. He spent his afterschool hours at his local Boys & Girls
Club, which he said played a “major
role” in his life. “What it provided me on
a day-to-day basis was a safe, productive environment to go to after school.”
He said the club will benefit not only
those children who will enjoy the safe
and supervised environment; it will
be a positive influence on the community as a whole. “There is no greater
investment in any community than
investing in our children — what’s
a better use of our time, energy and
resources?”
AHERN from page one
The plan included Ahern State Park
among 27 properties that fell short
of serving the essential purposes of a
state park — to preserve unique natural areas, serve multiple recreational
needs, ensure public access and promote tourism. The plan recommended
pursuing “alternative management
strategies” at these sites, including
leasing or selling the properties or
managing them in partnership with
a municipality, nonprofit organization
or other state agency that would bear
some or all of the financial
responsibilities
associated with them.
When the plan met
with a chilly response
from the public, Bald withdrew it and
sent the planners back to the drawing
board.
Ahern State Park covers 128.8acres, most of them wooded, with
3,500 feet of shoreline on Lake Winnisquam. The park was transferred to
the state in November, 1994 as Governor’s State Park, and renamed by
statute in 1998

dence collected at the

as evidence collected
during the execution of
two other search warrants led to HalseyCarter’s arrest.
On the morning after
the fire, the police officer — who police officials did not identify
— showed investigators
the area near his home
where his trash can
had been. The can was
melted and burnt. The
garage on the property,
which is attached to the
house, also sustained
fire damage.
Police note the officer and his family were
home and sleeping at
the actual time of the
fire.
The homeowner had
a valid court protective
order, prohibiting stalking activity, in place
against Halsey-Carter
at the time of the fire.
Police say the officer did
not have a relationship
with the accused outside of his police work
and hand handled some

in the past.
The four counts of
arson that HalseyCarter faces are a
result of the one fire
with different elements.
The criminal mischief
charge relates to the
damage to the garage.
