REKINDLING THE FLAME
“Stir up the inner-fire, the gift God gave you….”
2Timothy 1:6
One of the things I look forward to is the opportunity for us to have an
all-church study over a good book. Such a study is short term. It usually
spans over 5-7 weeks and includes small group meetings and Sunday
worship emphases on the themes for the week. The small groups are
especially important. Here is the chance to dig deeper into the study
material, as well as build stronger relationships with our fellow Christians through fellowship and prayer.
I’m happy to announce that we will begin another all-church study in
September. This year we will take a look at Mark Batterson’s Wild
Goose Chase. Mark Batterson is the creative young pastor of the
National Community Church of Washington D.C. and author of several
bestselling books. This is what he says about Wild Goose Chase.
Most of us have no idea where we are going most of the time.
Perfect. Celtic Christians had a name for the Holy Spirit: An
Geadh-Glas, or “The Wild Goose.” The name hints at mystery.
Much like a wild goose, the Spirit of God cannot be tracked or
tamed. An element of danger, an air of unpredictability,
surround Him. And while the name may sound a little sacrilegious, I cannot think of a better description of what it’s like to
follow the Spirit through life. I think the Celtic Christians were
on to something. Most of us will have no idea where we are
going most of the time. And I know that is unsettling. But
circumstantial uncertainty also goes by another name:
Adventure.
The book goes on to describe how to overcome several blocks which
keep us from following the Holy Spirit wholeheartedly, such as guilt,
fear, routine and failure. It’s well worth the read, for as Paul reminds
us, “All who faithfully follow the Spirit of God are the true children of
God” (Romans 8:14).
The Sunday morning worship emphases will begin September 21st,
with small group orientation beginning the week before. Be watching
for more information, and keep the whole project in your prayers.
Until later….grace and peace to you! Rik

STEPHEN MINISTRY SUNDAY
SEPTEMBER 14
Bob Willis will bring a message of healing and hope as he sculpts
the HEALING HEART. The sculpture has a break to symbolize a
sorrow-filled event that breaks the heart. It has a bandage placed
over the break to represent the healing power and presence of
God. This can also represent the person who kept you from
“falling apart” during a difficult time – in many cases, a Stephen
Minister.
VUMC’s Stephen Ministry team will host this Sunday event and
invites all of you to attend and to invite a friend to hear Bob’s
message. We will introduce our two new trainees and tell you
more about how Stephen Ministry can bless you during a difficult
time. Both the sculpture and Bob’s book will be available for
purchase following the service.
ONLY ONE SERVICE – PLEASE COME BE A PART OF THIS SPECIAL TIME.
Get Involved!
The VUMC Stitch and Sew group is going strong!
Seventy (yes, 70!) children’s Christmas stockings
are now ready for the upcoming holiday season,
10 Promise Bags are ready for Infant Crisis Center,
and these gifted ladies have also completed a
beautiful quilt top. Now, they would love to have a
quilting frame and stitch regulator at the church so
that they would not have to rely on borrowing a
frame to finish their quilts.
Donations have already been given to help the
Stitch and Sew group with their “wish.” If you would
like to contribute, just make a check payable to
VUMC, noting “quilting frame” or “sewing group”
on the Memo line.
These friendly and productive ladies would love to
have others join them in their various projects
which include knitting cancer chemo caps, sewing
additional Promise Bags, and stitching casserole
covers. Who knows what might be next? Join them
anytime on Wednesday afternoons from 1— 5 p.m.
Would You Like to
be a Ringer or a
Dingaling?
Chancel Ringers
handbell choir is
looking for anyone
who would like to
ring with us. Some
music reading ability
is recommended but
not required. We'll
teach you what you
need to know. Rehearsals will begin on Sunday,
September 7, following 10:30 worship.
If you are interested or know of someone
who is, contact Martha Pendleton.

Children’s Ministries
Calling the Disciples
Children in Amazing Voyage have been learning about how Jesus called the disciples and
how they can be disciples. Several Village UMC members have shared their experiences
and their wisdom about being a disciple of Jesus with the children during the Gathering Time
each Sunday. Thank you, Helen Reid, Kathryn Witzel, George Burton, David Selby, Brian
Walker, Patti Pojezny and Mary Moore, for inspiring the children.
Fishing for People
If attendance at Children's Moment is small on September 7 it's because
many of the children have gone fishing! To finish their unit on "Calling
the Disciples," Amazing Voyage Games teachers, Kendra Farrill and Jan
Schechter, are taking the children fishing during Sunday School and worship
times. They will enjoy an outdoor fishing experience as well as considering
how they can fish for people.
"Thy Word Is a Lamp..."
Village United Methodist Church has a tradition of presenting Bibles to children entering 3rd
grade. At that age their reading skills enable them to be more independent in studying Bible
teachings so we want them to have their own Bibles. Presentation of Bibles to Zane Fidler,
Madison Samson and Isabella Tai will be during the Children's Moment at 10:30 worship on
September 14.
Outreach Ministries
Circles meetings
resume in September!
September 9
Brambles will meet at 1:00 p.m. at the church.
Wesleyan Women will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the
church.
September 16
Martha Circle will meet at 10:00 a.m. at the
church.
Ruth Circle will meet at 1:00 p.m. at the home
of Billie Coons.
Prime Timers
Have you always wanted to visit Paris,
France, but have never had the
opportunity to do so? Let Martha
Pendleton take you on a tour, as
she presents highlights of her recent
trip to Paris at the next Prime Timers
luncheon on Thursday, September
11 at Noon.
Martha will entertain and educate us with photos
and stories, giving us a view of Paris through her
eyes. Her well-organized, thorough presentations
are always a delight, and this will be no exception.
As always, come at Noon with a salad, main dish,
or dessert to share. We’ll enjoy lunch, then take
off for Paris: bring a friend to share the trip!
