Problem Solving
Basket Weaving - A “hands-on” course to introduce basketry, from
dyeing the reed to weaving the basket. Each child will complete at least one
basket. Instructor: Caroline Conley
Basket Weaving II - Must have previous basket making experience. Students will
work on more advanced projects. May be taken more than once. Instructor: Caroline Conley
Clay Creations - Learn the basic techniques of form,
decoration and texture. Will work in relief style using clay to be
fired, and Crayola Model Magic. Each year is a new project theme,
repeats are welcome. Instructors: Michelle Vinci and Nancy
Klausen-Mash
Color My World - (STEAM class) STEAM is where Art is combined with Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Math. Life is about using the whole box of crayons. With exciting
projects and concepts involving math, literacy, physical science, and economics, there will never
be a dull moment.
Join us to make stained glass art, wax canvases, your own
shaped, multi colored crayons, and much more. Instructor: Jennifer Alvarado
Create Away With Papier Maché - A little paste, lots of
newspaper, and a ton of imagination, and you’re on your way to a messy, fun
filled class of Papier Maché. There’s no limit to what you can create. Bring an
old shirt to cover clothes. Instructor: Brooke Hess
CREATIVE PAINTING - Use different media to jumpstart your creativity. Find ways to make your painting your own.

Drawing - Use pencils, charcoal, pen & ink,
markers, and oil pastels to improve your drawing
ability. Instructor: Janet Laws
Knit Wit - How was your sweater made? Learn the basics of knitting.
Design and knit your own creations. All levels of experience welcome.

Knitwit II - More advanced stitches and projects for those who
have taken beginning Knitwit or who already know how to knit.

Masks, Masks, Masks - People have been
making masks for more than 20,000 years! See amazing
masks from places around the world. Make your own
masks, and use them to play games. Instructor: Pam Volk
Origami - The Japanese art of paper-folding. Each day new creations will be
brought home. Instructor: Michiko Dunkley
SEWING FOR AMERICAN GIRLS - Learn the basic skills of machine
sewing as you make outfits for your 18” doll or stuffed bear, plus a matching skirt
for you. Instructor: Suzanne Marley
Trash to treasure Each day you will create amazing one of a kind treasures out
of recycled items, choosing from several projects (games, jewelry, everyday decorative
items, artwork, etc.). Students will be provided with a small list of “trash” items to bring.
Instructor: Gina Pittman
Watercolor - Course will begin with basic drawing. Students will learn types of
washes, lines, and how to control the paint. At least two paintings will be completed.

Young Tailors-NO GIRLS ALLOWED! Feel the
power of the machine! Popped buttons, split seams, Boy Scout
badges. Take care of them yourself! Learn machine sewing
while making a GIANT TV/Reading pillow out of a YSI T-shirt.

Algebra Adventure - Can you solve 2x + 4 = x + 6? What
about 5x + 8 = 3x + 10 + x? Equations like this will be a breeze once you
embark on YSI’s Algebra Adventure. This class offers a unique approach for
solving multi-step linear equations, ranging from tactile methods, concrete
representations, and abstract processes. Strong fluency with addition and
multiplication facts is a plus. Instructor: Betsy Bagsby
Card Sharks - Card games have been popular for hundreds of years
because they’re challenging and fun!! Learn new card games that you can teach your
family and friends. You’ll be improving your math skills without even realizing it!!!

Chess - Basic instruction in game technique, middle game
strategy, and how to play openings and tactics. A beginners
class and an advanced class will be offered. (See Junior Scholars

Destination Imagination 101 – Draw, build, create, brainstorm, and tap into
the potential of your mind! You will use your imagination both individually and as part of a group,
to solve problems and make up fun skits to go with them. If you are creative and like to look at
things with a fresh point of view, this is for you! Instructor: Lorie Proffit
Double Dare - How well do you remember what you learned in Social Studies, Science,
Language, & Math last year? Are you the ‘physical-type’ that enjoys challenging activities, indoors
and out? Well, come test your mastery in the crazy trivia and challenges of Double Dare! You may
just get a slimy surprise! Instructor: Gina Pittman
Games! Games! Games! - Develop your problem solving ability as you play
your favorite games: Monopoly, Outburst, Twister, Scattegories, and many more.

LET GO MY LEGO! - Use your imagination and creativity to build
challenging Lego projects. Team building and independent activities will be
included. Instructor: Bill Spencer or Janie Betts
Pokemon - Become a master at dueling once you create your own card, character and story to go
with your new creation. Cards, Gameboys, Playstations & videos welcome, (with parent permission),
Wed-Fri of class. (Clearly label personal items.) Instructor: Kristen Letsinger
Solve the Mystery - Features the role playing game ‘How to Host a Mystery’. Become a
character and guess “who done it”! A different Mystery game will be offered each week. A Junior mystery
will be solved by the younger students. Reading skills are very important. Instructor: Lee Bannister
Tabletop Athletes - Games you can play any time you have a friend, a
table, and some free time. Learn Tabletop football, Tabletop tennis, Hackey Sack, etc.
Track your points per game, and find the Mean, Median, and Mode of your scores. The
week will end with a “Super Bowl” based on students who have won their brackets,
and a “Pro Bowl” based on the two students who have the highest Mean. FUN!, FUN!,

You Can Do the Cube! - Amaze your family and friends when you
learn how to solve the world famous Rubik’s Cube! Step by step instructions will be
taught and practiced. Instructor: Travis King
Young Mathematicians - Learn principles of geometry, logic, algebra, and problem
solving to explore all types of math challenges including the creation of a class toy. Students will
compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals in the Measurement Olympics. Instructor: Betsy Bagsby
Languages
American Sign Language - Introduction to the American Sign Language Manual
Alphabet, and what it’s like to be deaf. Instructor: Tonya Strother
Japanese - Learn simple phrases, count, and write your name. Introduction to the
Japanese culture and make origami figures. Instructor: Michiko Dunkley
Spanish - You will be introduced to this beautiful language that has over 500
million speakers worldwide. It is one of the easier languages to learn. Class will
emphasize basic conversation, culture, and food. Instructor: Rosa Almazan
Technology
Your “i” is on me - Students will create an iMovie Trailer with the
iPad. They will create the movie with themselves as the Star, record the scenes,
and create Title/Credits. Instructor: Nicole Fletcher

Kids In The Kitchen - If you have always wanted
to learn to cook, then this is the class for you! It is a beginning
cooking class where you will learn basic techniques while
creating delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner entrees.

Math Munchies - Use food, measurement tools, and
recipes to explore age appropriate math skills. Instructor: Janie Betts (Please, no repeats!)
Mmmm Chocolate! - Learn the history of chocolate and how it’s made. Make and
sample delicious recipes from the cookbook we’ll compile. Make and videotape commercials
for your favorite candy bar and much more! Not recommended for nut allergies.

Rolling In The Dough - We’ll learn to cook, knead and bake, as we measure,
mix and calculate. But most exciting, we get to eat what we create. (Please, no food

Motor Skills
Fun In The Sun! - Whack your ball through the wicket or knock your opponent’s away! 
Come join us for good old summertime fun!  Play exciting Bocce Ball, Challenging Croquette,
Goofy Ladder Golf and other terrific backyard games.  Instructors: Rhea Forte and Rick Hess
Get in the Groove and Move! - Wanna dance? Here’s your
chance! Move to all types of music. Conclude the week with a choreographed
presentation. Instructor: Kristi King
Hoop Dreams - Basketball skills will be introduced and refined
with organized activities and games. Instructor: Tiffany Carlton
Irish Step Dance - Learn Irish jigs, reels, and shuffle jigs.
We’ll also try ceidhle dancing (pronounced “caylee” dancing) which
is group dancing…think Riverdance! Soft ballet and tap shoes
would be great, but socks and hard sole shoes will work just fine!

Tumbleweed Gymnastics - Tumbling, trampoline, swing bar, balance beam,
vault, and springboard are introduced during this energetic, skill-based course. All skill levels
welcome. Instructor: Erica Moore
INTERMEDIATE GYMNASTICS - For students who have already had some instruction
in gymnastics. Student must be able to do cartwheels & handstands. Instructor: Erica Moore
Soccer - Students will learn and practice all the skills used in soccer, and enjoy
group participation. Students should wear tennis shoes. Shin guards and soccer
socks are recommended, but optional.
INTERMEDIATE SOCCER - More advanced skills taught to experienced soccer players.
Students should wear tennis shoes. Shin guards and soccer socks are recommended, but optional.
Sports Fanatics - Are you crazy about sports? Then this class is for you!
Learn the basics of golf, how to punt/pass/kick a football, how to play
Frisbee golf, plus many popular backyard games such as; Corn, Washers,
Ladder Ball, and Bocce.

VOLLEYBALL - Volleyball skills will be introduced and practiced with
planned activities and games. Instructor: Tiffany Carlton
MUSIC AND DRAMA
BE A SINGING STAR - Students will work on vocal production, diction,
style, and stage presence. If you’re interested in pursuing the limelight, then this
class is for you. Instructor: Lindsey Jackson
Fun-de-Mentals of Violin - The Suzuki method is used to
teach beginning violin. Violins will be provided. Instructor: Debbie Meese
Guitar - Learn to strum basic chords and play along with your
favorite songs. Guitars will be provided. Instructor: James Satterwhite or
Patrick Bourn
Keyboards for Beginners - Learn to read, and play notes
and rhythms in a group keyboard class. While learning basic music theory,
you will have lots of fun! Each student will be provided with a keyboard.

MAGICAL MAGICIAN - Have you always wanted to do magic tricks?
Working with balloons, playing cards, and a magic wand, you will become a true

On Stage - Theatre games will be used to develop stage presence. “Back stage”
and “on stage” crafts will be explored. Presentation Thursday for Young Scholars.

Songwriting – Students will be introduced to song form, rhyme, and
the songwriting process. A professional musician and teacher will lead the class.

Aerospace Workshop - An exciting adventure that explores
the development of space travel. Build and launch your own rocket. Enjoy
projects, activities and games. Instructor: Tish Maddox
Amazing Animals - Develop scientific skills through observation,
hands on activities, writing, and crafts. Allergy alert: students will interact
with live animals. Fee $5 (for special guests.) Please, no repeats! Instructors:

Angry Birdies (STEM) - Students will take the popular app “Angry Birds” and bring
it to life through Engineering Design Challenges. They will develop an understanding of the
Science, Math, and Engineering that make these challenges possible. Included will be lessons on
Newton’s Laws, Geometric Principles, and Engineering for Everyone. Instructor: Greg Duel
Creek Critters - Explore creeks safely as you learn how scientists study, capture, and
identify creek life. Test creek water for pollution and compare wildlife at two different creek sites.

Crime Scene Investigators Needed! (STEM class) How can math and
science be used to fight crimes? Analyze physical clues and liquid splatter patterns found at
various crime scenes. Fingerprinting and forensic dentistry techniques will be used as we
attempt to solve crimes. Instructor: Lorie Proffitt
DIGGING FOR DINOSAURS - Explore the world of dinosaurs through hands-on
activities, videos, games, examination of real dinosaur bones and egg shells, and simulated fossil
digging. (Please, no repeats) Instructor: Kendall Crosslin
Geo-Explorers - Where are you and where are you going? You will
work with maps, globes, atlases, compasses, games, puzzles, and art projects
to explore your world. The class will include an introduction to the Geography
Bee process and Geocaching. Instructor: Mary Loftus
International Safari - Explore the world’s habitats and
biomes, investigating the connection between plants, animals, and nonliving things. Using crafts, research and projects, students will compare and
contrast the diversity of our world. Instructor: Kendall Crosslin
Ms. Wizard’s Science Experiments - Be a scientist and learn the
scientific method. Have fun with the wonder of science. Instructor: Jessica Johnson
SNAP CIRCUITS - Young Scholars will be introduced to the world of electricity and
electronics. Learn about circuits, switches, motors, and lights. Make electronic sounds and maybe
even learn to shock your teacher. Just kidding! Instructor: Travis King
Star Worlds- Planets and stars from the Star Wars
movie series will be used to explore the possibilities of solar
system characteristics. The class will be a mix of true solar
system facts (needed for fifth-grade science), and the limitless
possibility of imagination. Instructor: Thomas Lepping
Stem-tastic Science - Join our mad scientist and
conduct exciting experiments. Participate in problem solving
activities in order to be equipped for the next generation of
STEM scientists (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)!

This Really Rocks! - Introduction to Geology - rocks, collections, fossils, caves, layers
of the earth, earthquakes, and volcanoes. Instructor: Mary Loftus
Young Engineers - Higher, bigger, wider…go for it! Use various building materials,
along with rulers, yardsticks, and tape measures to build your own structures. Learn how math is
used to make some of the world’s most incredible buildings. Words like perimeter, balance, height,
& measurement will make sense as you build in this challenging class. (Open to boys and girls.)

Language Arts & History
Castles & Kings - Discover Medieval History and what it was like
to live in the Middle Ages. Learn how a castle was built and why. See how a
castle was attacked and defended. Instructor: Brian Goodwin
Civil War - Step back into the Civil War era and relive those times through the
eyes of a child. This will include meals, toys, games, experiencing a soldier’s life, and
an in-depth look at the Battle of Franklin. Instructor: Thomas Lepping
Harry Potter Book Club 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 See if you can win the House Cup in a week of wizard cards, charms,
potions, and comparing books with movies. Have fun playing
ground quidditch. Must have read the appropriate books before taking

Meet The American Girls - Using the
popular book series, “The American Girls Collection”, students
will be introduced to the games, education, food, dress, and
daily life of Colonial America. Instructor: Isabella Comer
Time Travel at YSI – Time Travel back 2000 years ago to the
incredibly advanced Maya and Aztec worlds. Play the first ball game,
build a pyramid temple, or a model of an ancient city. Make a jade
mask or jeweled necklace, write your name in ancient symbols and
drink Aztec chocolate!! Instructor: Pam Volk

Senior Scholars Class Descriptions
To participate in Senior Scholars, students must have completed
5th grade by June. Some of the Senior classes are extended through
two periods to give the older Scholars more in-depth study.
ARTS & CRAFTS
Audacious Painting - By ‘audacious’ we mean ‘bold, daring, and
fearless’! Learn the basics of painting - brushwork, washes, color mixing, and
more. Practice new techniques while creating beautiful and striking images.

Bead Works - Use beads to create beautiful works of art that can be worn

alligraphy - Learn to see pictures in words and make letters come alive. Calligraphy means “beautiful writing” so bring your imagination and a little patience; the supplies
are provided. Fee: $5 Instructor: Mark Price
Cartooning Basics - Discover, learn, and practice the
real world pro technique of the cartoon arts. Sketching will be used to
demonstrate shapes, body structure, head construction, animals, and more.

CLAYMATION CREATION - Get an introduction to claymation. Recreate characters from books or movies beginning with wire armature and take home a completed project.
Students will also create individual craft pieces to take home. Fee: $10 Instructor: Deborah Nelson
Creative Stitching - Learn the basics of latchhook, cross stitch, and basic sewing
skills as you make your own personalized pillow. Fee $5 Instructor: Kristy Jones
Crochet Sorbet - Come and relax in the ice cream parlor where
you will learn to crochet your own ice cream cones and scarves. Class Fee: $5
Instructor: Diana Flegal
Dare to Draw - Think you can’t draw? Think again! You will learn the
“tools” necessary to draw accurately and with confidence. Do your drawings
of people look like stick people? You will also learn techniques to improve your
ability to draw the human form while working with a live clothed model.

Duct Tape Art - Come and learn the amazing creations that can
be made with Duct Tape including artwork and everyday items. Fee $10

Junk Art - Pure creativity at work designing unique art using available “trash”.
Students are encouraged to BYOJ “Bring your own Junk”. Instructor: Tom Tjornehoj
Knit Wit - Using different types of fiber, students will learn the basics of knitting. Make
a hat or felted purse. Fee $10 Instructor: Lynne Pope
Model Building - There are a variety of vehicle models available, from planes to ships to muscle cars, for beginner to intermediate
model builder. Fee $5 Instructor: Tom Tjornehoj
Photography - Learn the basics of using a digital camera and explore the concepts of

Sports & Fitness
Angry Birds (STEM) - Students will take the popular app “Angry Birds”
and bring it to life through Engineering Design Challenges. They will develop an
understanding of the Science, Math, and Engineering that make these challenges
possible. Included will be lessons on Newton’s Laws, Geometric principles, and
Engineering for Everyone. Instructor: Denise Beaman
Emergency! 911 - What do you do after you call 911. This class will teach Basic First Aid
and CPR training with certification. Students will explore career possibilities in the medical field.

Frontline ssi - Gather information, do interviews, take pictures, write stories, and

Hour of Code - Students will use block programming to code
their own games, animations, and stories using programming logic.

We will have fun learning Science concepts by doing inquiry-based, hands-on Science experiments!

Math Olympiad - Nearly 150,000 students worldwide participate in Math Olympiads, a
series of contests which promote flexibility and ingenuity in solving mathematical problems. In
this session scholars will have a chance to simulate an entire Math Olympiad season in a week of

RIVER RATS - Get your feet wet and explore the rivers around us as you
find and identify river life, study water pollution, and learn about wildlife.

gravity, push the limits, and create thrill seeking rides. In this class you will design

Spy Training 101 - Calling all agents. You will be trained in secret codes, gadgetry,

Q: Is Young Scholars Institute right for my child?
A: Young Scholars Institute offers challenging exploratory classes which are designed for independent and
highly motivated learners. The learning environment is ideal for students who are able to remain focused in less
structured settings. The courses are academically and artistically challenging. YSI is for the mature, independent
student who is ready to change classes. Be sure to complete the checklist located in the registration form.
Q: My child is doing well in the fourth grade and will be in the fifth grade in the fall. Is it OK if
we sign him up for Senior Scholars?
A: No. Senior Scholars is meant only for students who will have completed fifth grade by June. Your child can look
forward to attending Senior Scholars next summer.
Q: Is it OK to have one child attend Junior Scholars the same week an older brother or sister
attends Senior Scholars?
A: Definitely! Parents can mail in registration forms together, and pay amount due with one check, payable to
Franklin Special School District (be sure to write every child’s name on the bottom of the check).
Q: Will there be lunch served at YSI?
A: Yes. We plan to offer a hot lunch for both the Juniors and Seniors this year. We will be able to provide a free hot
lunch for Junior Scholars (as we did last year through a federal grant. Senior Scholars do not qualify for the free
lunch funding under this grant). We will send further information about lunch in your class schedule, which will
be sent to you the middle of May.
Q: Do I have to put six alternative choices for each week?
A: Yes. We make every effort to give students their first choices. In a few cases, this involves assigning a student
his first choices at different periods. Because of high and/or low enrollment in a course, it is not always possible to
give first choices. This is when we look at alternate choices. Even if your first choices are filled, you can’t go wrong,
all the classes at YSI are great!!! Your application will be delayed if it doesn’t have the six alternative choices.
Q: When will I be notified if my child is in the program?
A: Unless you hear from us by mail or phone before April 1st, you may assume your child is registered. You will
receive your child’s schedule the middle of May.
Q: Does YSI provide morning or afternoon day care?
A: No, but parents may register their students for care with MAC (615) 790-4719, and YSI will provide transportation.

Providing Students With A Variety Of Exploratory Experiences In A Creative Learning Environment
New this year! Young Scholars Institute is located at one convenient location, Poplar Grove School.
Junior Scholars offers courses for students
who have completed
1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th grades (ages 7-10).
ELIGIBILITY: Independent and highly motivated students between the ages of 7 & 14.
(Pre-first students are not eligible.)
Senior Scholars offers courses to students
who have completed
5th grade or above (ages 11-14).
See page 10 of the brochure for further details.
DATES: June 6 - 10 & June 13 - 17 (Students may attend one or both weeks).
TIME: Junior Scholars: 8:30 AM - 3:15 PM
Senior Scholars: 8:15 AM - 2:45 PM.
LUNCH: A hot lunch will be offered this year or students may bring their own
lunch and beverage.
PLACE: Poplar Grove School on Del Rio Pike, Franklin
FEES:
1. A $30.00 non-refundable registration fee (Registration fee is not included in Tuition).
2. One Week Tuition, $175. Two Week Tuition, $350. Tuition is due before June 1st.
NOTE: If paid after May 25, there will be a late fee of $15.
3. Priority registration for students and residents of FSSD is March 1 - 14, 2016
Registration will be based on postmark.
4. Certain classes may require an additional fee which will be noted in the class description.
5. Make checks payable to: Franklin Special School District.
6. Registration must be mailed to our post office box.

All Students should mail form as soon as
possible. Students and residents of FSSD
(Franklin Special School District) have a
priority registration of March 1 -14, BUT nonFSSD students should NOT wait.
