The HKS Group
Walter Höhn GmbH
Walter Höhn GmbH is the oldest of the companies. Since its
establishment in 1970, it has manufactured mechanical components in the best German engineering tradition. Even though
production of the parts takes place in the most modern CNC
processing centers, the spirit of the founder remains alive without compromise to the precision of the mechanical production
line. Walter Höhn GmbH is responsible for the manufacture of
quality components used in the production of the actuators.
HKS Dreh-Antriebe GmbH
Company Site: Wächtersbach-Aufenau
HKS Dreh Antriebe GmbH is primarily responsible for product
development and sales. Since 1985, it has shared the same
management with Walter Höhn GmbH. Owing to the acquired
expertise found within HKS Dreh-Antriebe GmbH, HKS‘ rotary
actuators are now the leading product in its sector within Europe. Together with its customers, HKS Dreh Antriebe GmbH
designs specialized solutions for specific tasks. For example, a
research project done in cooperation with Technical University
in Dortmund increased the efficiency and perfection of hydraulic
rotary actuators. HKS Dreh-Antriebe GmbH is also responsible
for customer service world-wide.
HKS Dreh-Antriebe GmbH & Co. KG
Another member of the HKS Group is the HKS Dreh-Antriebe
GmbH & Co. KG in Neukirch (East-Germany). All larger rotary
actuators are manufactured in the Saxonian enterprise. Due to
its location, HKS Dreh-Antriebe GmbH & Co. KG makes an ideal
partner for customers in eastern Europe.

The sales company, HKS France, located near Paris, is responsible for the support and sales to our French customers. HKS North
America, LLC is the newest member of the HKS Group. The sales
and marketing office on the East Coast improves communication and support for our customers on the American continent.

HKS Dreh-Antriebe GmbH & CO. KG in Neukirch
(East Germany) is founded by Günter Höhn.
HKS Dreh-Antriebe GmbH is founded with its own
design and sales department for hydraulic rotary
actuators.
The building in Wächtersbach-Aufenau is extended to
create additional office space.
Günter Höhn becomes managing director of the
Walter Höhn GmbH.
Production of the first rotary actuators begins.
Training and teaching of specialists begin. Until
present day.
On April 1st, 1973 the company moves to
Wächtersbach-Aufenau into a new building with
about 2,150 sq ft / 200 m² office space.
Walter Höhn purchases the company „Ossmer und
Manns“ in Frankfurt and renames it to Walter Höhn
with 1 employee. In October, the son of Walter Höhn,
Günter, joins the company as second employee.

Walter Höhn GmbH is celebrating its 40th year in business. HKS Dreh-Antriebe GmbH was founded 25 years
ago and HKS Dreh-Antriebe GmbH & Co. KG is celebrating its 15th jubilee.
Acquisition of a wider plot of land on the
Wächtersbach-Aufenau site. A further production
shop and additional offices are planned.
The marketing company HKS North America, LLC
is founded.
There has been further expansion in Neukirch with the
construction of a new production shop for manufacturing actuators weighing from 300 kg each. Approximately 2000 m²
of production area and approximately 500 m² of office space
and area for social rooms are therefore now available.
The marketing company HKS France (near Paris)
is founded.
In Wächtersbach-Aufenau, the company doubles its office
and production space by building of a second company
building.
Production in our site in Neukirch begins.

What are Rotary Actuators?
Hydraulic rotary actuators are compact units which generate very
high torque in small spaces using hydraulic pressure. Since they can
be controlled precisely and easily despite their high power, HKS rotary
actuators have been a success in almost every area where limited rotary
movements with high torque are required.
High manufacturing precision is required in order to achieve this
functional efficiency and reliability. The actuator’s interior is perfectly
protected and completely immune to dust, dirt and moisture. This
precision, along with the strong, well-sealed housing, allows the
actuator to withstand operating pressures up to 350 bars. Rotary
actuators can also be used under very harsh conditions, underground
as well as 2300 meters below sea level. As an example, 224 actuators
were used during the recovery of the Russian atomic submarine
„Kursk“ to ensure that it was held horizontally, thereby enabling the
salvage efforts to be carried out safely. Actuators are even used in the
pharmaceutical and food processing industries where a high degree of
cleanliness and hygiene are required.
Based on the actuator‘s small physical presence, its strength and
reliability may not be perceivable. The strongest HKS rotary actuator
model can turn over twenty VW Golf automobiles from side to side.

Helical
This design is based on a system with a multiple helical gear. The linear movement
of the piston is converted into a rotational movement via the multiple helical
gears. The rotational movement will be greater if the linear movement of the
piston is longer.
The design of our rotary actuators is very simple, but requires precision
manufacturing in order to ensure their functional efficiency and brand name
reliability. The rotational play of the multiple gear rotary actuators can be
reduced to 10 angular minutes.
Rack and Pinion
The rack and pinion type actuator, in order to transmit the same torque, is
required to be much bigger in size than the rotary vane motor. Generation
and transmission is carried out via a rack piston which is positioned transversely
to a drive journal fitted with a pinion. The resulting shear forces that occur
between the gear teeth and the opposing back of the piston are hydraulically
balanced, or supported by roller bearings depending on the design.
These actuators are particularly suitable for high torques.
Vane
The vane type rotary actuator is characterized by its fixed arrangement of
internal segments, or so-called vanes. A vane segment is fixed firmly on the
housing and the piston segment is fixed firmly on the drive shaft. The vane
type rotary actuator is very compact in design. However, the maximum possible
turning angle is between 270° and 300°.

HKS Power Actuator Technology
The slewing mechanism of the HKS Power Actuators is based on the coarse
thread principle. Here the linear movement of the piston is converted to a
powerful rotary movement by multi-turn coarse threads rotating in opposite
directions on the housing, piston and shaft when the piston is subjected to
compressive stress. If the hydraulic circuit is closed by an adjustable valve,
which at the same time prevents the piston and shaft from moving, the attachment remains stationary in any desired working position!

Powerpack
Modern drilling rigs have carefully tuned regulatory systems which ensure the
stable trimming of the platform in every weather condition. From the control
centre the electro-hydraulic HKS „Powerpacks“ are controlled by computer in
order to open or close the fittings with which the tanks are filled or emptied.
The HKS Powerpack is a combination of hydraulic rotary actuators and
hydraulic power units. This combination results in a stand alone system which
can be controlled electrically or hydraulically. The pump can be used in a case
of emergency.
