The earthquakes may have altered Christchurch's dining scene, but many of
the garden city's Asian restaurants are still going strong, says Ewan Sargent.

Malaysia Delights
Malaysia Delights is yet another refugee from the CBD.
It used to be a little oasis of Malaysian food at the lower end of
Manchester St, and was poised to move to Colombo St before last
February’s quake put paid to that. Thankfully, it’s now found a spot in
Papanui, and Cantabrian fans of Malaysian cuisine can rejoice.
The tofu is excellent, the nasi lemak is a true and
flavourful interpretation of Malaysia’s’ national dish, and the
ever-popular beef rending is particularly moreish.

Good news for Christchurch
Malaysian is back in town
From Christchurch there have been some amazing stories of resilience in the face of extreme
Hardship as the devastated Garden City seeks to get back on its feet. Peter Foo and his Malaysia Delights
Restaurant are a case in point. Peter says his is the only Malaysian restaurant in Christchurch that has managed
to keep its doors open through the toughest of times brought on by two earthquakes and three moves.
Originally opened in Manchester Street in 2008, Malaysia Delights established a great network of regular
customers and became the go-to hub for Malaysian cuisine in Christchurch. Following the first earthquake
in September 2010, Peter and his team had to relocate. They moved to Colombo Street but the newly
renovated restaurant sadly lasted only until the deadly February tremor.
Peter says the trauma of events have been softened by the loyalty of his customers who he has
stayed in touch with via the restaurant website and email.
"The word must have spread because since we reopened in Papanui a year ago we have attracted a lot
of fresh new diners who also have been keen to support the restaurant," says Mr Foo. Malaysia Delights has some
great cheap eats such as the popular Nasi Lemak and Curry Laksa costing between $13 and $18.
It seats up to 40 people, catering for small and large groups as well as private parties.
Takeaways are also available and menus can be tailored to suit group requirements on request.
Malaysia Delight and Peter Foo want to thank their loyal customers who continue to support the restaurant.

Malaysian Delights Restaurant
You could call this Malaysian street food, Papanui Rd-style – super-fast service
in a few-frills, fuss-free setting. Malaysian Delights is next to KFC in Papanui's
takeaway alley, offering sit-down dining in a clean, efficient environment.
Even if its menu at first seems to be weighted towards familiar Chinese-themed
staples, the choice is enormous. We tried a mixed entrée plate (various deep-fried
treats, plus a decent chicken satay); a tasty rendang spiked with an encouraging
quantity of crunchy spice pods and lemongrass; and a satisfying roti paratha served
with a simple yellow chicken curry. The flavours are good, but the spiciness is
tempered for wussy New Zealand palates. Portions are, in both size and price,
reasonable rather than generous. The wine list is limited, but there's BYO, too.
The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, Tuesday to Sunday. Don't expect to
linger over dinner. We were contemplating the remnants of ours little more
than 30 minutes after walking in.

PROMOTION IN NEW ZEALAND

CHRISTCHURCH, Jan 31 (Bernama) -- The Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra
Jamalullail, launched a Perlis food promotion here last night in conjunction with the five-day study tour
of Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) in New Zealand from yesterday. The two-week promotion was
launched at the Malaysia Delight Restaurant located at 479, Papanui Road. "It aims to promote
Perlis on the international stage by way of food. The dishes available are universal in terms of taste and
not overly complicated," said Tuanku Syed Faizuddin at the launch. The menu of mouth-watering food
includes "Ku Puan" chicken curry, special fried rice, "roti jala" and Kangar fried "bihun". Tuanku Syed
Faizuddin, in his speech, invited potential investors to the state.

"Perlis also has a good investment climate because of its strategic location in the middle of the
Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) and Northern Corridor Economic Region
(NCER), besides good infrastructure," he said. Tuanku Syed Faizuddin also said that Perlis''s economic
growth rose from 5.4 per cent in 2010 to 7.3 per cent last year while access to electricity and water
utilities has achieved 100 per cent. Restaurant owner Peter Foo, 51, of Kuala Lumpur, said he was
delighted with the selection of his restaurant as the place to launch the campaign and hoped it would
help attract more customers. He has stayed here over 20 years and operates the restaurant with his
wife, Alice Foo, 50, and two sons. Customer Peter Downer, 55, of Dunedin, said he was impressed by
the Perlis food. "It is acceptable to my taste."

For John Suttie, 64, Perlis food is the same as most other Malaysian food, but he still liked and enjoyed
the food. "I''ve been in Perlis and eaten there," said the retired soldier who can speak a few words in
Malay. Also present at the launch were the Raja Puan Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Hajah Lailatul Shahreen
Akashah Khalil, UniMAP Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kamarudin Hussin and Director of Education
Malaysia in New Zealand, Dr Rosli Mohammed.
