Cowan Magnet Center was created to provide an educational
environment that supports the needs of Gifted and High Ability students
within the Los Angeles Unified School District. Our program is
designed to challenge students to work beyond the traditional grade-level
frameworks articulated by the Common Core standards. Students in our
program are engaged in lessons and projects that require higher-level
thought processes and are asked to produce work that displays their

Center for grades 1 though 6 is located on the campus of Cowan

Growing our God-given gifts for a life of loving and serving.
Venice Lutheran School specializes in music, strong academics,
fine arts, strong community, personalized attention, spiritual
foundation and character development, and college-bound/high
school prep curriculum. We have a STEM component, accelerated
reading, student-based pacing in mathematics, and carefully
planned technology in each grade for best instructional use. The
Venice Lutheran School instructional program is a combination of
traditional classical education, cooperative projects, field trips,
foreign language, interactive leadership groups and technology
based programs in a loving, nurturing environment which give
children a full scope of preparedness skills for the rigors of life,
high school and beyond.

Kindergarten enrollment for 14-15 is five (5) students. Six
applicants applied and 5 were enrolled.
Enrollment for 2015-2016 School Year is January 26 – 30, 2015
Our School Band, Directed by Mrs. Emily Booth, is a Gold medal
winner in the Forum Music Festival 2014 and received the
Outstanding Musicianship Award. Our school band is open to 3rd
through 8th grades and music is taught in all grades. We have a
Beginner Band Program and a Varsity Band.

A Walgrove education lays the foundation for a life-long love and
enthusiasm for learning and the pursuit of knowledge. Our school is a
diverse community of learners; including students, staff and parents, who
communicate together with mutual respect, as we support one other
within a collaboratively developed set of Core Beliefs. These include the
belief that children learn best when they are seen as creative and
inventive discoverers; and that hands on experience, prior knowledge,
self discovery, guided learning and direct instruction are all key for
students to construct and gain knowledge. We also believe that children
learn best when the school environment supports children’s social
and emotional growth as a foundation for their academic growth.
Therefore, our teachers and staff are given creative freedom within a safe

We, the students, parents, teachers, administrators, staff and community
of Westport Heights are passionately committed to fostering a safe,
engaging environment that values respect, cultivates lifelong learners and
celebrates our cultural diversity. It is our collective responsibility to
inspire our students to become creative problem solvers, critical thinkers
and compassionate citizens who have the skills to become successful in
our ever-changing global society.
Other Designations
We are a Common Core Technology Project School (CCTP) with 1-to-1
iPads for every student. The teachers use the technology to engage
students in integrated problem-solving lessons. We are also a Reward
School receiving funds in recognition of our increase in API points.

We are within LMU Family of Schools (FOS) and as such receive Lions
for Learning Tutors, LMU Rotoract and Greek Community Service, and
FOS Early Literacy Grants. We have a school garden for each classroom
to have their own plot and space to teach science, health and other
subjects. There are many extracurricular opportunities for students such
as student council, dance, cheer squad, Drama Club, Choir, and
instrumental music.
