13-3 Autumn - Flagler Beach Historical Museum
Flagler Beach Historical Museum
“From the Stone Age...
to the Space Age”
Autumn 2013
Volume 13 - Edition 3
What’s New at the Museum
== History isn’t all that your local museum offers. It also functions
as an area Welcome Center for visitors and locals alike. We have
maps and great brochures of Flagler County fun things to do. Our
doors are open seven days a week to ensure that
visitor materials are available whenever needed.
To that end, the Flagler County Commission,
TDC, and Team Tourism assist us to be sure we
have the staff needed to accomplish that -- especially on weekends.
== Since the spring of 2012, our TDC liaison has been “Tourism
Tom” Rominger who diligently and pleasantly opened
the doors every Sunday, and assisted visitors many
other shifts as well. We anticipate featuring a new
liaison in the FBHM Life Preserver’s winter issue.
== We also have another tourism project underway
-- the Welcome Center Area renovation. If you have
a knack for decorating or cabinetry and a little time
to help, give us a call and we’ll put you in touch with
Sandra Siepietoski who is coordinating the effort.
== Finally, members, you too (and any visiting company) can find fun
things to do. View a video or learn about the cell phone tour produced by
our A1A Scenic Highway friends, both full of historic and natural attractions from your Museum to Flagler’s west side and north to St. Augustine!

NEXT UP: SCRAMBLE RAMBLE TIME,
H O L I D AY G I F T S & D E C O R AT I O N S !
The 11th Annual Scramble Ramble begins Friday, Dec. 8th this year, but
come by now for our 2013 holiday items. Parachuting Santa greeting
cards, Flagler Pier ornaments, magnets, and bottle stoppers are back
and as popular as our historic lap & throw blankets. See more on page 7.

BOOTS & BLING MEMORIES & SHOUT-OUTS!
The fun was documented by our recurring band of marketing pros
who moonlight as photographers: Ganser Graphics’Jason Ganser,
Marketing 2 Go’s Cindy Dalecki, and Flagler Beach Mayor Linda
Provencher. Keepsake photos will be on display soon at the Museum.
Stop in for a visit, make a donation for your photo -- or call 439-6262 to
learn how to donate and receive digital photos of you and your friends.
Many thanks to fantastic Co-Chair & Auction Coordinator Kim
Carney who somehow this year still found space to build baskets at
Eagles Nest Storage AND the time to keep her co-chair sane. Team
Gala was also fortunate to have Sandy Siepietoski and Kathy Tiller on
all of the organizational details.
Cindy Miller (photo far right)
from Flagler School of Dance
returned to teach line dances to
the crowd. Capably coordinating
check-in/check-out were Linda
Jones and Karen Young, assisted by Annie Livingston,
Zoe Quinn, Bev Zemlock (photo
near left) & Tony Monopoli.
In charge of boosting the party atmosphere were Beth Mount &
Carol Fisher with their tables full of friends. Both also lent creative
talent during the weeks of planning Boots & Bling - With a Twist! Thank
you Rose Ann Brennan for donating back your 50/50 raffle winnings!
Thank you to Black Cloud owners John & Sandy Seibel, and
manager Lindsay Birch for her “twisted” drink specials. Posters
were printed by our friends from JPA - Joseph Pozzuoli, Architects.
Thank you Georgia Turner & Gretchen Smith for helping us get the
word out to the world that Boots & Bling was on its way - With a Twist!
There is always at least one lifesaver each year who goes above
and beyond and in 2013 it was Nona Premo from the Gallery of Local Art across from the museum. The night before the event she was
painstakingly removing her art from display sleeves so we could use
them on our unprotected auction items. Awesome.
Finally thank you to everyone who came out to play, especially
Team Gala’s husbands and boyfriends who sacrifice for weeks just
to sit next to an empty chair on Gala Night: Dan Bayerl, Jim Carney,
and Sam Arden.
Editor’s Note: Boots & Bling is behind us now, but really
fantastic volunteers deserve a “group hug” for making our annual gala a
success. Featured here are those who gave of their time. On page 3 are
gala sponsors, along with members, friends, and businesses that gave
cash or silent auction donations.
If you know someone here, applaud them. If you are a customer at any of
the businesses on the opposite page, take a minute to tell them thank you.
If you aren’t a customer, now is a great time to stop by and see what their
business is all about! Join me as we thank and appreciate them all. ~Teri Pruden, FBHM Director
PS: It seems that someone is always forgotten at “thank you time”
and it is often the person, business, or group who most deserves
recognition. If that “someone” is you or someone you know, please
remind me at 439-6262 or [email protected] so we can
give you a Texas-sized Thank You “shout out” in the next newsletter.
Boots & Bling - With a Twist!: With all of the local
excitement surrounding Bunnell’s Centennial year, we returned
to the city and the rockin’ Black Cloud Saloon & Restaurant
where guests were greeted and allowed to mount the fun and frisky
equines of George Letts & Friends. In
the background the mood was enhanced by the upbeat finger-picking of
banjo player Colin Dunbar.
Before and during the generous
meals served with friendly precision by
Board Member
Lindsay Birch’s Black Cloud staff, dinBeth Mount &
ers were entertained by Cheryle Correa
husband Bill
belting out popular hits of all genres. Attendees were dancing from the start of the evening, and many thanks
to our longtime DJ Vern (Pyramid DJs) who instigated many rounds
of “The Twist” with his snippets of songs referring to the popular dance.
Our emcee & “Hostess with the Mostest” Lauren Watkins was the hit
of the evening as she kept all of the fun, games and music coordinated.
In addition to reminding everyone that they were there to raise money
for the Museum that night, prior to the Gala, she also created the table
centerpieces. Linens were provided by our good friend Lisa McDevitt
& the Flagler Auditorium, who also ensured that all attendees could
use credit cards instead of cash.
Welcome to New Administrative Asst: Kathy Tiller!
The Flagler Beach Historical Museum welcomes new staff member, Kathy Tiller, who joined us on August 1, 2013
to serve as our part-time creative administrative assistant to Museum Director Teri Pruden. Kathy will share expertise
gained from a 30+ year career in marketing, advertising, and promotion.
She has called Flagler County “home” since 1977, and she happily resides in a Flagler Beach house purchased in
1998. Born in Indiana, Pennsylvania, Kathy was raised in Daytona Beach, after her parents relocated here when she
was a year old. She attended Mainland High School, studied at DBCC, and first worked in the banking industry.
In 1981, Kathy joined the Daytona Beach News-Journal as a Flagler County Sales Executive. Fourteen years later,
she moved to Promotion & Marketing at the main office. In 2000, she took the helm of the Promotion department and
capably commanded that position until leaving the newspaper in 2008. She began work in advertising and marketing for
FlaglerLive.com in 2010 when the online news service was launched. We are excited to put to use all of her promotional
skills, as well as lessons Kathy learned during her stint as Marketing Director for the Museum of Florida Art in DeLand.
Thrust into her new position with the Museum during the chaotic month leading up to “Boots & Bling - With a Twist!,”
Kathy proved to be a calm and capable addition to Team Gala! Since then, she has made administrative inroads documenting training and
procedures for the Museum. She is also in charge of memberships, business sponsorships, creative media, and events. She can be reached
at (386) 299-9516 or [email protected] and we are thrilled to welcome Kathy to the Museum family.

Meet Your Fellow Member: John Davis of Johnny D’s
Flagler Beach’s North A1A in February 2011, The popular restaurant is open 7 days a week from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m., touting
the “longest happy hour in Flagler Beach” from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00
p.m. Davis recently built a top deck that can seat 50 people with
a fantastic ocean view. Very soon Johnny D’s will have free Trivia
Nights on the upper and lower decks, via tablets (or your iPhones)
provided by BuzzTime Beyond. There is live entertainment daily
7 days a week.
Davis owned other restaurants and bars in Jacksonville, FL,
before discovering Flagler Beach in 2005 when he bought a house
here for weekend getaways. In 2010 he “retired” to his weekend
getaway home in Flagler Beach, only to discover that “retirement”
was not for him. Soon he purchased the former “Rossi’s” on A1A,
and the rest is history. John loves the people of Flagler Beach, and
the city itself, which is why he chose also to support the FBHM,
because it represents “our unique community” and the people who
live here. “This is paradise to me and I don’t want to ever leave”
he said. He loves running Johnny D’s Beach Bar & Grill because
he is able to provide “jobs and fun” to Flagler Beach. Sounds like
dedication to community to us!

Celebrating
Bunnell’s
Centennial
In this issue, we wrap our year-long Celebration of Bunnell Centennial coverage. What wonderful memories they created this year -- for
the Bi-Centennial in 2113! We feature below our final excerpt from
the 100-year-old 1913 edition of “The Bunnell Home Builder.” As
we are busy planning the 2013 Holiday at the Beach with our uniquely
Florida Parachuting Santa, “A Christmas in Florida” caught our attention.
Thanks again to Patsy Durrance for passing on her mother
Leona Knight’s original issues to the Flagler County Historical Society
(FCHS) and Sisco Deen who made copies available to us. Visit your
Museum to peruse more of these historic gems as well as our photo
display depicting the early days of Bunnell and St. Johns Park. If those
pictures whet your appetite, see many more where they came from
with a visit to the FCHS’s Holden House and Research Annex, both
just across the street from the old Bunnell Courthouse. Step into the
past at the recently restored Holden House, and make time to see
county memorabilia at the Annex any Wednesday from 10am to 1pm.
Festival of the Century
Hear ye! Hear Ye! You will not have a chance like this again, so
join the historical “Festival of the Century” in Bunnell on November 9,
2013 from 1:00pm - 8:00pm.
We are having a party that will go down in history. Don’t wake up on
Sunday to discover you forgot to participate in the Bunnell Centennial
Celebration! Will your children ask why they were not at the parade?
We still need vendors. Have you been making crafts all year and
forgot to sell them? Will you miss an opportunity to make the public
aware of your business? OK, it’s not too late! You still have time to
make plans to join in the fun. You may even want to register to participate in the parade or to acquire booth space for our next to last
Centennial event. If not, you may just have to wait another 100 years.
Call 386-437-7425, or e-mail [email protected] to get in on the
fun. There will be judging of parade participants and the awarding of
prizes and plenty of fun and music.
Best of all will be the huge fireworks
display which will begin at 7:30 pm. Come
on out and enjoy the best of Bunnell with your
neighbors. We can’t wait to see you there!
---The
History
“Christmas in Bunnell”
A Holiday Extravaganza
Bunnell will cap off the year-long
Centennial celebration with “Christmas in
Bunnell” where the north meets the south.
There will be a cold front moving in from
the north and we are expecting over eight
tons of snow as our cooks mix up a good
old southern barbeque for our Centennial
Holiday Extravaganza.
In addition, the city will be lighting all
the trees around Lake Lucille in front of the
Historic Coquina City Hall and there will be
a special lighting ceremony.
Come and enjoy live music, Christmas
carols, hot chocolate and much more. Oh
yes, let’s not forget SANTA! There is nothing
more special than a visit from Santa Claus.
It doesn’t matter how young or old you are,
it will be magic when you hear the sirens
approaching and see Santa arriving on the
City of Bunnell fire truck. Santa will visit all
the good boys and girls with his goodie bag.
So be good for goodness sake!
Santa will also be available for photo
opportunities. Christmas in Bunnell will
start at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 13,
2013. ~Excerpted from Bunnell’s Nov. 2013
newsletter
