A VERY WARM
WELCOME
TO VIENNA
Visitors to Vienna encounter a venerably old and
excitingly young city. The capital of Austria owes
its appeal to the exciting combination of monarchical
and nostalgic flair and a modern cultural scene.
Music lovers get their money’s worth here. Vienna
has been home to more world-renowned composers
than any other place in the world – music is literally
in the air in the city.
In the historical city centre, which is a UNESCO
World Heritage Site, you can admire impressive
buildings from days gone by: from the Gothic
St. Stephens’s Cathedral and the imperial Hofburg
Palace through to the art nouveau splendour of
the Secession. Relax in a Viennese coffee house and
enjoy the traditional desserts of Viennese cuisine.
A tip from me: You can enjoy a breathtaking view
of the city centre from the roof of the nearby Palace
of Justice.
I am looking forward to your visit to the Hapimag
Resort Wien, and wish you an unforgettable
stay here.

VIENNA –
FROM MOZART TO
MODERN ART
In the middle of the city, but in a quiet
location – the resort is close to the
city centre. It’s just a short walk to
Ringstrasse with its large number of
magnificent buildings.
The resort is located in the 8th district, ‘Josefstadt’,
the smallest district in Vienna, which is adjacent to
the city centre. The name ‘Josefstadt’ has been used
since the year 1700 and evokes the Crown Prince
and subsequent Emperor Joseph I. Up until the middle of the 17th century, the district mainly comprised
fields, meadows and vineyards.
The street scene in the district is now characterised
by a large number of listed buildings. Visitors to
Josefstadt can discover many squares and buildings
of major artistic or historical interest. The most
important buildings include the Piarist Church,
the Marian column, Theatre in der Josefstadt
and Auersperg Palace.
Attractions
At the start of the 18th
century, several noble
palaces were built on
Ringstrasse. Four of them
have been preserved to
date: Auersperg, Strozzi,
Schönborn and Damian.

History
HISTORY
AND CULTURE
In 2014 Vienna was chosen once more
as the world’s most liveable city. The
Vienna Museum on Karlsplatz vividly
documents the history of the city from
its beginnings up to the present day.
The origins of Vienna date back to Roman antiquity:
In the 1st century AD the Romans established a
military camp to protect the borders of their empire
and called it ‘Vindobona’. Vienna became a firstclass commercial centre in the Middle Ages. However,
Vienna achieved its greatest importance under
the Habsburgs. In 1359 Rudolf IV. started building
St. Stephen’s Cathedral. In 1365 he founded one
of the first universities in Europe in Vienna. In the
15th century, Vienna was one of the largest cities
in Europe.
When Maria Theresia became Empress of Austria
in 1740, Vienna experienced a brilliant epoch. The
Baroque and Rococo periods have shaped the city
right up to the present day. In the second half of
the 19th century, Vienna enjoyed its next golden period. The advent of industrialisation led to the socalled ‘founding era’. A construction boom started.
When the city walls were torn down in 1857, they
were replaced by the Ringstrasse containing mag
nificent monumental buildings in the classicist style.
This era also saw the creation of the highly traditional
coffee houses which are still an integral part of the
cityscape today.
Present-day Vienna has
more than 1.8 million
inhabitants, is one of
the seats of the United
Nations, and plays an
important role as an
east-west hub.

MUSEUMS
CULTURE
Vienna is home to more than 100 mu

exhibitions.
Numerous museums, collections and works of art
make Vienna a city full of beauty and art: for example
the Museum of Art History with the world’s largest
collection of paintings by Brueghel or the many works
of Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele in Belvedere
Palace and the Leopold Museum.
The reception team will
be pleased to provide
you with further information on the extensive
range of museums and
exhibitions in Vienna.
The Leopold Museum is the centre of the Museum
Quarter which ranks among the ten largest cultural
centres in the world. The Museum Quarter also con-

Culinary
EATING
IN VIENNA
CULINA RY
Viennese cuisine is distinctive and
popular throughout the world. That’s
also true of Viennese coffee house
culture which is recognised by UNESCO
as an intangible cultural heritage.
However, Vienna is also a wine city.
Vienna is probably the only city in the world where
the name represents a separate style of food.
Probably the most famous dish is the ‘Wiener Schnitzel’.
Another traditional dish in Viennese cuisine is
‘Tafelspitz’ (braised beef roulade). The tenderly cooked
beef is served with different side dishes such as
apple horseradish, chive sauce, creamed spinach
or pan-fried potatoes.
The traditional cafés in Vienna attract visitors with
different coffee variations and pastry creations.
Cake shops are closely related to cafés. Ring cake
(Gugelhupf), Sacher cake, Dobos sponge cake,
and many other gateaux and cakes guarantee pure
pleasure.
Vienna coffee roasters have invented more than 50
different preparation methods over the course
of time. A glass of tap water is normally served
with the coffee.
You can obtain restaurant tips at reception.
A simple Viennese guest
house is called a ‘Beisl’.
It contains a spacious bar
where wine is cooled
and beer is served. With
its darkly painted
wooden panelling, simple tables and chairs,
the ‘Beisl’ maintains its
position in the urban
restaurant scene.
Culinary
VIENNA IS
A WINE CITY
CULINA RY
Vienna is the only capital in the world
to produce a significant quantity of wine
within the city boundaries.
Most of the wine from Vienna is traditionally drunk in
a wine tavern (Heuriger). The word ‘Heuriger’ is
derived from the word ‘heur’ and means both a young
wine and the ‘Buschenschank’ (wine tavern) which
serves the wine. The present-day law on wine taverns
dates back to a decree by Emperor Joseph II. from
the year 1784, when he allowed winegrowers to serve
wine which they had personally produced. Genuine
Viennese ‘Heurige’ can be recognised by a pine tree
bush or a garland which is hung over the e
 ntrance
to the wine tavern. This shows that the wine tavern is
open. This is also the reason for the name ‘Buschenschank’. These ‘Heurige’ are found all over Vienna.
Vienna has the largest city-centre vineyard acreage.
White wine grapes are primarily grown. Grüner
Veltliner and Riesling are the more well-known varieties. However, Viennese vineyards also contain red
wine grapes such as Blauer Burgunder and Zweigelt.
The name ‘Wiener
Gemischter Satz’
denotes wineswhich
come entirely from
one vineyard in Vienna.
At least 3 grape
varieties must be
planted in this v
 ineyard.
They are then harvested and p
 rocessed
together.

SHOPPING
IN VIENNA
CITY
An original present or a charming
souvenir: Shopping is part of the holiday
pleasure in Vienna.
The three main shopping streets in the city centre –
Kohlmarkt, Graben and Kärtnner Strasse – are part
of the pedestrian zone in the centre andform the socalled ‘Golden U’. They contain both many luxury
brand boutiques and highly traditional shops such as
‘Meinl am Graben’ or k.u.k. Hofzuckerbäcker Demel.
In the side streets you will find a large number of
antique shops and the Dorotheum auction house
(founded in 1707), a genuine Mecca for lovers of
beautiful antiques.
Measuring just under two kilometres, Mariahilfer
Strasse is Vienna’s shopping boulevard. In addition
to hundreds of shops, it is home to an extensive
range of restaurants. Nasch Market, the largest
market in Vienna, is an absolute must for connoisseurs. It is renowned for its multicultural flair. Here
you can find fruit, vegetables, fish and meat, and
any number of chic restaurants.
