Mickey Avalon’s life story plays out
like an episode of VH1′s ‘Behind The
Music,” marred by personal tragedy,
triumphs and immense pain. Using
his life experiences as fuel for his
intense rhymes, Mickey Avalon is now
inviting listeners to step into his world
of debauchery with the release of his
sophomore studio album, Loaded, on
April 24th, 2012.
Avalon’s back-story begins on the
streets of Hollywood, California. Raised
by his heroin-addicted father, he began
selling pot at a young age, a trade he
acquired from his mother. In an attempt
to clean up his act, Mickey converted
to Orthodox Judaism in his late teens,
an effort that didn’t last due to constant
family tragedy, such as his father’s death
in a tragic drunk driving accident.
By his early 20s, Mickey had
married, had a daughter, and moved
out of California, relocating to Portland,
Oregon. The serine surroundings of the
Pacific Northwest couldn’t hide Mickey
from his past for long, as his drug addled
Hollywood lifestyle caught up with him
in the form of an uncontrollable heroin
addiction. As his life neared rock bottom,
Mickey found himself broke, divorced,
and turning to prostitution, just to support
his smack habit. With a desire to once
again get his life back on track, Avalon
moved in with his sister, and the pair
set out on the road to recovery. Tragedy
struck again when his sister relapsed,
and died from a heroin overdose.
After the deaths of both his father
and sister, Mickey decided that he
wanted more out of life, moved back to
Los Angeles, and chose to make one
final attempt to clean up his act. Shortly
after his return, Mickey was befriended
by ex-MTV VJ Simon Rex (aka Dirt
Nasty), who encouraged Avalon to
pursue his passion of hip-hop and even
collaborated with him on some tracks. At
the time, Avalon was staying in a sober
living facility and had a strict curfew, so
Dirt Nasty began passing out Mickey’s
demo at Hollywood clubs, which helped
Mickey develop a following among fans
of the Los Angeles nightclub scene.
As Mickey’s popularity grew, he
began to sell out clubs throughout
California with his legendary live show.
Soon after Interscope Records took
notice of the guerilla promotions tactics
and signed Avalon to the label in 2005.
Through Interscope, Avalon released
his now classic self-titled debut album,
which showcased his unique rhyming
style and indulgent lyrics. Inspired by his
experiences on the streets with drugs
and prostitution, the raw honesty of
his songs immediately resonated with
audiences. Fan favorites “Jane Fonda,”
“Mr. Right” and “My Dick” quickly spread
across the internet and mainstream
radio, turning Mickey Avalon into a
household name. Avalon quickly took
to the road and was performing soldout shows alongside the Red Hot Chili
Peppers, Travis Barker and DJ AM,
Snoop Dogg, Stephen Marley and
Slightly Stoopid.
Mickey’s contagious demeanor and
unique writing style has made him a hot
commodity in the music industry as hiphop artist Young Jeezy and producer
Jermaine Dupri jumped at the chance to
collaborate with him for a Boost Mobile
commercial. Avalon then joined forces
with rock acts the Happy Mondays, and
Unwritten Law, with whom he co-wrote
the radio hit “Shoulda Known Better”. His
music has been featured in countless
movies and television series including
the HBO’s series Hung, the animated
series American Dad, the Duke Nukem
Forever video game, “Harold and Kumar
Escape From Guantanamo Bay” and
most recently in the trailers for the
Cameron Diaz film “Bad Teacher.”
Free after years of industry red tape,
Mickey Avalon has returned with a brand
new album Loaded, which takes fans
on a journey through the seedy streets
of Hollywood. Mickey immediately
launches into his salacious exploits with
“Rock Bottom” an anthem for his riotous
self-destructing behavior, and continues
the depravity alongside Unwritten Law’s
Scott Russo on the album’s lead single
“Girlfriend”, an ode to having friends with
benefits.
Comedy From The Mountain
Hello fans of the funny and this fine publication
(Lake Tahoe Entertainer, right?) We’ve had a whacked
out spring that just recently gave us more snow than
our lousy winter did and now it feels like summer
too soon. I guess that means it’s officially shoulder
season this month (until Memorial Day) but maybe
this could be a blessing in disguise? Maybe it’s time
to eliminate the shoulder season and go straight for
a pre summer. I mean, why not? The studios seems
to release their ‘Summer Blockbusters’ earlier and
earlier every year. This month alone “The Amazing
Spider-Man II,” “Godzilla” and “Dawn of the Planet
of the Apes” have been or are having their release
happening before it’s even officially summer so why
not re-brand our shoulder season as a “Pre-SummerGet-Up-Here-Tourists-Before-All-The-Others-Do”
campaign? We can partner up with the LTVA and
get representatives out to colleges before students
graduate and have them celebrate their launch into
the real world by coming up to Tahoe first! Why don’t
I ever get invited to the meetings?
What a way to kick off the month having
comedians Bob Zany and Zan Aufderheide back
for their 3rd round of “Zan vs Zany” up here in Lake
Tahoe. Both are regular contributors to my morning
radio show every Tuesday Bob Zany with “The Zany
Report” and Zan Aufderheide with “A Moment of Zan”
every Thursday. Bob’s been doing stand up ever since
he appeared as a teenager on “The Gong Show”
where people basically made fools of themselves
for national television exposure. Ever hear of “The
Unknown Comic” Murray Langston? That’s how he
got his start so believe it or not some careers were
launched on that show (hosted by another zany
guy: Chuck Barris). Since that appearance (and
subsequent return) Bob has been on other television
shows some that include “The Tonight Show with Jay
Leno,” Comedy Central, “Start Search” and for 17
years was part of the annual Jerry Lewis Muscular
Dystrophy Telethon and Comedy Central. On the big
screen you’ve seen Zany in “I am Comic,” “Joe Dirt”
starring with David Spade, “Up Your Alley” opposite
Linda Blair and playing a lawyer in Matt Damon’s “The
Informant!” His latest movie, “23 Minutes to Sunrise”
(directed by Jay Kanzler and starring Eric Roberts
and Nia Peeples). In addition to all his credits Bob
has also produced numerous comedy shows helping
others get that much needed exposure. Some of
those acts include Garry Shandling, Yakov Smirnoff,
Robert Wuhl, Kevin Nealon and Nia Peeples to
name a few. He also has a lot of followers on his
Twitter account and the Bob Zany Podcast too. I’ve
always had respect for established comedians giving
newer comics a chance to shine and get exposure
in the business. That’s where Indiana comic Zan
Aufderheide comes in. It wasn’t that long ago that
every Tuesday on my radio show when Bob called in
he would talk about this very funny Midwestern gal
and that I should have her on my show. Well, one thing
lead to another and now every Thursday you can hear
Zan for her segment, “A Moment of Zan” on my show.
She’s actually generated a pretty good following too.
Bob started making her part of his act when they
were booked together and started bringing her out on
stage during his part of the show. It turned into a ‘He
Said-She Said’ bit that would eventually be the ‘Zan
vs Zany’ show. Now, to be fair Ms. Aufderheide was
doing pretty well on her own but once she hooked up
with Zany things started to really take off....for both of
them! They’ve since made numerous appearances in
Las Vegas, have developed a pretty popular podcast
and Bob’s dream is to have the two of them booked
into their own theater in Vegas where they don’t have
to travel on the road so much. Who knows maybe a
television show based on their stage act? The last
time they were here I asked if they came up with the
‘Zan vs Zany’ right away or did other potential names
come up first? I jokingly suggested “The Sweet &
Sour Show,” “A Gen-Xer Meets A Boomer” or “The
Optimist & The Pessimist” as ideas. Bob likes ‘Zan
vs Zany’ which makes more sense.
What about “Before & After?” Or
how about “The Naturally Colored
& No Hair Show” as a title? No?
Alright then. See this classic He
said/She said exchange happening
May 7th through the 11th.
Another comic who hasn’t
been up here in quite awhile is
Vince Morris. That’s when you
realize that time is flying by when
you try to remember when certain
comics were last up here. With his
smooth, charismatic style telling his
nuances of the funny the Columbus,
Ohio native delivers the message
covering everything from his take on
race relations, family, relationships
Howie Nave
and life in general. It’s not a one-sided deal too as
Vince invites the audience into his world where he’ll
not only make you laugh but (dare I say?) think as
well. What? A comic who makes you laugh and think
as well? Vince likes to take it to the edge sometimes
when he touches on some of the more controversial
material. Vince performs all over the country in just
about every venue available. He has called Los
Angeles home for some time now and has appeared
on a number of television programs including shows/
specials on Comedy Central, NBC’s Friday Night,
, BET’s Comic View, HBO’s Sex and the City and
HBO’s Def Comedy Jam. He’s also showcased at
the prestigious Montreal Comedy Festival and the
U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen and Lake Tahoe
which, I’m betting is his most prestigious credit.
Appearing with Vince it’s Michael Palascak again,
another comic who hasn’t been here in quite some
time. Check ‘em both out May 14th through the18th.
Making
his
debut up here in our
little showroom it’s
John Melendez. If
that name sounds
familiar it’s because
he was a regular on
The Howard Stern
Radio Show for like
15
years.
During
that time with Stern,
Melendez
gained
national
acclaim
and recognition as
“Stuttering
John”
with his daring and
irreverent
interview
style and prominent personality. In addition to
interviewing countless celebrities on the radio,
Melendez was simultaneously hired as a field reporter
for on his nationally syndicated television show
where he worked for two seasons as an interviewer
and in sketch pieces for the show's man-on-thestreet segments. He continued his television work
for Howard Stern on the highly rated E! television
show. When Leno had The Tonight Show, Melendez
was the show's nightly announcer and made regular
appearances in the show's comedy sketches and
did correspondent pieces. How cool for Melendez
to get on Howard Stern’s radio show (1998) as an
intern in college and then landed on the air almost
immediately after getting out of college. Melendez is
here May 21st through the 25th.

Brazilian Barbecue at Latin Soul
Latin Soul menu expanded to include Brazilian BBQ
The Tahoe South restaurant options now include Brazilian
Barbecue at Latin Soul. The southern Brazilian tradition of
juicy, slow-roasted meats carved table side with plentiful side
dishes is an exciting addition at Latin Soul Restaurant. Brazilian
Barbecue is served on Friday and Saturday nights from 4:00
until 9:00 for $24.99. The daily selection of meats served (beef,
pork, chicken, and sausage) varies. Traditional cocktails and
delectable desserts are available. Latin Soul Restaurant at
Lakeside Inn and Casino, 168 Highway 50 in Stateline, Nevada,
serves Latin fusion cuisine. The addition of Brazilian Barbecue
expands the already creative menu at Latin Soul.
“Our goal is to innovate, to continually offer something
new and fresh,” said Lon Rusk, Lakeside’s President. “The
popularity of our current menu inspired us to offer even more
variety within the Latin fusion theme of Latin Soul. Brazilian
Barbecue fits perfectly.”
Chef Alvaro Ochoa is the mastermind behind Latin Soul’s
cuisine. He has worked nearly three decades in the kitchens
at Lakeside Inn drawing upon years of personal experience
and a talented staff to push the boundaries of menu creation,
flavors and presentation. “We’ve taken Latin fusion to a whole
new level with the addition of Brazilian Barbecue," says Chef
Ochoa.
Lakeside Inn and Casino, Lakesideinn.com/bbq, established
in 1985, is locally owned and operated. Situated in the outdoor
playground of the high Sierras, guests enjoy seasonal activities
year-round. The adventure continues inside with twenty-four
hour casino action, two restaurants and lodging.
