PRESIDENT’S’:
Happy November
This is usually the issue where we thank everyone who is supportive of our PTSA, our staff,
our school, and mostly our students. It goes without saying that we are grateful to all of these
folks. We are thankful for the care and kindness that we see on a daily basis in the Jackson
community.
There are many other things to be grateful for:
Voting: Elections are coming up. We hear a lot about the “right” to vote. We can’t take that
for granted. It is a privilege of living in a democracy. But more than a right, it’s a responsibility. When your ballot comes in, read it, make your choices, and send it in. We would like to
encourage all of the Jackson students who are eligible to vote this year to do so. Thank you
for being a voice.
Students: We are fortunate to have such a wonderful core of students in our school. Many
are involved in clubs and committees that broaden their experiences. Our students have the
opportunity to get involved in school government, local government, and community service.
They make an impact on our community and represent Jackson well. Thank you for getting
involved.
Families: Families come in a wide variety. No matter the makeup of your family, you make
an impact on our school. Students benefit from the support and presence of families at
Jackson. You don’t have to be present in person. When you turn in a form on time, help your
student with their homework, volunteer your time, show up at school events, you make a
difference for your student and often other students, too. Thank you for all you do.
We are thankful for the 490 members who have decided to join our PTSA so far this year. You
make a difference with your support, and we strive to represent your voice to make Henry M.
Jackson High School the best it can be.
Happy Thanksgiving
Denise Constantineau

MESSAGE’:
First Impressions of the Wolfpack
By Michelle Renée
It was a busy day at Summer School in Bellevue when I received a text message from my long-time
friend, Blythe Young. Here was the exchange:
Blythe: Hey! Do you know anyone who would want a job as an assistant principal here in Everett at Jackson High School?
Me: Yes! How about me?
Blythe: Really?
Me: Yes! Tell me how to apply…
A few days later, after I had completed the online application, I received a phone call from Dave Peters, principal of Jackson High School. After talking with him for a number of minutes about the school, the staff, students, and community, I
asked him, “As principal of JHS, of what are you the most proud?” His response was, “I am most proud of the culture of
caring we have established here. We are a family at Jackson and we care for each other as much as we care about providing a high quality education for every student.”
In that moment I knew that Jackson High School would be the perfect fit for me.
From the time that my application was submitted and I was given a preliminary interview date, there were numerous
phone calls from the Human Resources Department asking me if I needed any help. I received a phone call from Peter
Scott, Assistant Superintendent, giving me his personal cell phone number and telling me that if I had any questions I
could call him. Wow. Every encounter at the CRC was professional, friendly, and genuine. I felt welcomed and valued as
a new member of the Everett School District.
The Jackson High School administrative team embraced me and made me feel like one of their own almost immediately.
We spent a lot of time together preparing for the beginning of the school year in August and laughed until our stomachs
hurt most days. We all share a passion for providing a first class college and career experience for all students. I feel
honored and fortunate to be part of an admin team that works together, laughs together, and trusts each other.
The Timberwolf staff is impressive when you look at all of the skills and talents they possess. What I experience daily is
their exceptional warmth and understanding. I have witnessed their dedication to students and their commitment to
student learning. I appreciate the willingness of our staff to be involved in providing extra-curricular experiences for our
students, from coaching sports to advising the many, many clubs available.
As I have been spending time in classrooms, I see students eager to learn and be challenged. I see students involved in
tasks that require the use of 21st century skills. I see them engaged in their learning and thinking at a deep level. I see
pride all over their faces when they have been successful at a difficult task. How exciting it is to see young people
grappling and persevering with rigorous content!
The first football game of the year was played before school started. As a huge fan of high school sports, I was looking
forward to that first game but wondered how many students would attend. The stands were full, the student section was
all standing, and the enthusiasm was contagious. School spirit and pride are rampant in the classrooms and in the hallways of Jackson High. Everyone belongs to the Pack. Almost on a daily basis, a student will hold a door open for me or
say “hello” to me even though they may not know who I am. That “culture of caring” does exist here and it is obvious
when you see students interacting with each other.
I was impressed with the number of parents who attended Curriculum Night. They were eager to find out all they could
about the school, our goals, and vision for the future. Many commented to me how impressed they were with the staff
at Jackson and the opportunities for learning offered here. I know that there is tremendous support from our parent
community. Everyone at Jackson is grateful for all that our parents do for us.
After two months, I truly understand and live by the JHS motto:
Work hard, play hard, T-Wolves for life!!

PSAT and SAT
Free of charge for sophomores and juniors
This October all sophomores were given the opportunity to take the PSAT free of charge at Jackson High
School. Juniors were also able to take the test for a small fee, and many took advantage of that opportunity.
The PSAT is a practice SAT exam. Research shows that taking the PSAT strengthens students’ SAT scores.
Results for the PSAT will be given to students in mid-December shortly before students are released for
Winter Break.
In early March all juniors will be given an opportunity to take the SAT (a requirement for students who plan
to go directly to a college or university directly after high school). This SAT will be administered during the
school day and will also be free of charge.
Free SAT Prep and Practice
Recently, the creators of the SAT gave Kahn Academy exclusive access and advice to build a personalized
SAT practice program for all students. The tools are free and available now for every student to own their
learning and their future. Click here to register and learn more.

Closing for Good
BECU Closes Shop to Donate Time in Area High

Let’s talk money. More than 1300 Boeing Employees Credit Union
employees spent the morning of October 20 in high schools, including
JHS, to host financial reality fairs—creating and managing budgets as
well as making real-world decisions about money—to the seniors in their
Career and College Readiness classes. Students did some role-playing
where they were given jobs and incomes to balance and create budgets
considering food, phone, housing, transportation, clothing, and more.

ASB Food Drive Benefits Mill Creek Students and Families
November 16 – December 16
The Puget Sound economy has improved. But that doesn’t mean all families are back on their feet. There are still many struggling
to find work, or the work they do have is not enough to make ends meet. Still, some have family and health crises preventing them
from working so that they can take care of what is most urgent. Many of our high school students are these families, and they are
hungry at school. Hunger is a barrier to optimal learning. The Mill Creek Food Bank and the Student & Family Advocate at JHS help
these families and their students get by.
This annual ASB food drive brings all the classes together to collect donations of non-perishable foods and baby products to fill the
shelves and growing needs of the Mill Creek Food Bank and the JHS Student & Family Advocate. The food bank, open to families in
our community once a week, also provides a back pack program to help local elementary-aged children get through the weekends.
There are several ways our Jackson High community can help with donations.
1. Coordinate your grocery shopping for times that Jackson students will be accepting donations at area grocery stores.
Monday, Wednesday, Friday (3-7 p.m.)*
Thomas Lake Albertson’s—Sophomores, Class of 2018
Week days after school (3-7 p.m.) and weekends (9 a.m.–6 p.m.)*
Central Market—Freshmen, Class of 2019
Silver Firs Safeway—Juniors, Class of 2017
Mill Creek Albertson’s—Seniors, Class of 2016
*Times may vary.
2. Students may bring donations in to school and add it to the collection bins in the school’s main foyer.
3. Cash donations will be gladly accepted at the grocery collection sites.
A list of the most urgent needs is listed below.
Heartfelt thanks for generously reaching into your pockets to reach out to our most needy families.

Rick Wigre Honored as Washington State Art Teacher of the Year
With 32 years in art education, JHS fine arts teacher Rick Wigre was awarded the distinction as the state’s
top art teacher from the Washington Art Education Association. The students he has mentored through the
years have won many awards in diverse mediums and now Mr. Wigre, whose artistic talents are as diverse
as his students’, is recognized for excellence in his participation, education, and advocacy in all levels of art
education. Mr. Wigre’s stellar talents have also garnered him state TSA Advisor of the Year and National
computer Graphics Contest Advisor Award. Congratulations to one of Jackson High’s finest teachers! See
Everett Public Schools’ October 2, 2015, News Release.
Brielle Kemis Receives Third Installment STEM Teaching Award
JHS biology and coordinated science teacher Brielle Kemis received her third annual $1000 award as part
of an AFCEA STEM Teacher Scholarship she was awarded in 2012 while a senior in science education at
Western Washington University. Her initial award was for $5,000 and was followed with $1,000 a year for
three years while teaching a STEM subject in a middle or high school. Ms. Kemis may use her funding for
hardware and software, other classroom tools, field trips, and STEM-focused clubs and activities. For her
Jackson science classes, she created a salt water ecosystem and purchased lab analysis and water testing
equipment for student use. This ecosystem is used to link content students learn with the real world. It has
enabled her to effectively teach science in a classroom that is not equipped for science labs. The Armed
Forces Communications & Electronics Association is an educational non-profit organization. Well done,
Ms. Kemis!
Seventh Straight District Title for Boys Tennis
Jackson Timberwolves finished their season with their 7th straight district title. In the last 11 years, the JHS
boys tennis team earned the district title nine times. Anuj Vimawala and Bence Dare won the doubles
title with teammates Patrick Follis and Andrew Kim finishing in 2nd place. The players will compete at
state in May. Great job, boys!
JHS Sophomore Competes at World Junior Judo Championships
Jackson sophomore Misato Sandoval joined two other Puget Sound youth on Team USA at the World
Junior Judo Championships in Abu Dhabi in late October. Misato (57 kg) is the top-ranked junior competitor
in her weight division and finished second at senior nationals last May. She trains at the North Sound Judo
Club in Lake Stevens. JHS is proud of Misato!

school I did my undergraduate studies at the University of Washington, and then I earned my
teaching certification at Seattle Pacific University.
What was your first job? My first job was delivering pizza.
Tell us a little about your family at home. Kids? Cats? Dogs? I am married to my beautiful
wife Lori. We have two kids, Kayla (12) and Nate (9). We also have a golden retriever named
Daisy and a cat named Padme.
Hobbies: I generally love sports, especially my home town Huskies, Seahawks, and Mariners.
Favorite TV show and/or movie: My wife and I have been huge Survivor fans since the show
first started—still love it!
Favorite book or book that you are reading right now: The Great Gatsby
How do you order your coffee? I usually drink black coffee, but I sometimes branch out on
warm days with an iced latte or a frappuccino.
Favorite vacation spot: Disneyland!
Favorite sport team: Seahawks

Other language(s) you speak: I dabbled in Spanish and Italian, but I’m very rusty.
If you could have a super power, what would it be? I always wanted to be able to use “The
Force”—yes, I’m an avid Star Wars fan!
What advice would you like to give to the students and/or parents? Enjoy every moment—
time is something we don’t get back.

Clothes for the Cause
Jackson Bands Together
A huge shout-out of gratitude is extended to the Jackson High community for supporting
the JHS Band Boosters at its Clothes for the Cause fundraiser on October 10. The rain
poured relentlessly that morning, yet car after car queued up to bring donations of clothing
and textiles. Thanks to your generous support, over $2000 was raised to support the
students in Jackson High’s instrumental music program. A spring event is scheduled, so
please consider unloading your spring cleaning with the JHS Band Boosters.
Help Wanted
JHS Yoga Classes Need Nylon and Cotton Belts
One of the five tested components of fitness is flexibility. In yoga, students work on improving their “sit and reach”
scores almost daily. Using a belt or strap helps those who need to modify their workout as well as provides an easier
and safer way of doing a pose or stretch. It also helps the advanced “yogis” stretch even farther. Many yoga practices
incorporate straps into their series. JHS fitness teacher Carol Barnes welcomes your donations of nylon and cotton belts.
Currently, she has a need for 24 additional belts to complete a class set. If you’re cleaning out your closets, kindly
consider our JHS yoga students by sending in your gently-used nylon and cotton belts to the JHS main office.
Community Cares
From Alyssa Campbell
JHS Student & Family Support Advocate
Parents, partners, and Timberwolves! As the Student & Family Support Advocate, I have the distinct privilege of serving
the unique needs of our students and families at Jackson High School. I keep toiletries, some clothing, shoes, and
snacks on hand for anyone who may have a need. Addressing immediate requests is a great joy of the job; however, I
need your help with something extra. I am in need of gift cards—grocery, fast food, gas, etc. Sometimes it’s nice to
be able to treat a student and/or parent when times are especially tough. Students whose families struggle financially
often don’t have much. These gift cards lift the spirits of those who receive them, and I see first-hand how they are
used with care and deep appreciation. Donations may be brought into the JHS main office in an envelope labeled,
“Community Cares, Alyssa Campbell.” I will be happy to address your questions or inquires at 425.385.7150 or
[email protected]. Thank you in advance!

Sponsored by the Library of Congress and the Washington State Library, students in grades 9-12 write a personal, but
also pursuasive, letter to the author of a fiction or nonfiction book, poem, or play about which they have strong feelings
and how reading the author’s work has changed or influenced them. It might be a book that helped them through a difficult time or it might be a book that simply touched their heart or inspired them.
