Dear Parishioners,
Every Sunday of this Easter season gives us an opportunity to contemplate, along with
our neophytes, the mystery of Christ’s resurrection. Everywhere we turn in today’s
readings we find signs of God’s abundant life and forgiveness. The early church proclaims the Good News. the apostles catch a large number of fish. Peter is forgiven.
Let us celebrate this day by recalling signs of Resurrection life in our world and in our
own lives today.

James Tissot’s Meal of Our Lord and the Apostles 3RD SUNDAY OF EASTER
“I am going fishing.” What an announcement! If asked who
made it, and not told it was a Bible quote, we might guess
“Grandpa” or “Uncle Fred,” or admit, “I said that last summer!” But it is a Bible quote, from today’s Gospel. The person
who said it also once declared, “You are the Christ, the Son of
the living God.” Yes, it’s Peter! So today’s announcement
seems quite the comedown. Last Sunday Jesus said, “As the
Father has sent me, so I send you.” But Peter seems determined
to return to his pre-apostolic occupation, until Jesus intervenes,
making Peter’s later announcement deeper, “Lord, you know
that I love you,” and Peter’s apostolic calling clearer, “Tend my
sheep.” Peter does so. Acts presents the consequences: Peter
declares, “We must obey God rather than men.” As Revelation
proclaims, “Worthy is the Lamb”—to receive Peter’s lifelong
service, and ours.
HOW’S THE FISHING? Because we’ve seen brutal tortures inflicted on persecuted Christians worldwide, how impressive are Peter and the
other disciples in today’s Acts of the
Apostles. Ordered to stop teaching, Peter, speaking for all, refuses. Yet such
courage was not their initial response. As today’s Gospel
opens, these same disciples seem to resume their former vocation, fishing. But their choice proves fruitless until Jesus, unrecognized, gets them to admit that their “old job,” though safe
and secure, has failed. Only when they obey Jesus do they succeed—fish—and recognize their Helper: “It is the Lord.” What
happens next teaches us, too. Jesus tells the disciples to bring
him the fruit of their work done at his command, “some of the
fish you just caught.” But breakfast is already waiting, “a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread.” Jesus wants our best efforts,
but he can always prepare and provide what we need: a comforting thought when our best efforts seem to fail.
WHO’S COMING FOR BREAKFAST? After providing a catch none of us could accomplish, Jesus
offers an intimacy any of us can provide: “Come, have break-
fast.” Revelation’s heavenly liturgy envisions a community
“countless in number.” So the “one hundred fifty-three fish,”
Saint Jerome suggests, equals the Mediterranean’s full number
of species—the Gospel’s way of asserting that the Church must
have room for everyone. Peter drags that full net to Jesus, keeping it safe and not torn. Pope Francis calls this unity our
“reconciled diversity.” How appropriate to live Saint Augustine’s timeless ideal, especially during this Jubilee Year of
Mercy: “In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, diversity; in all
things, charity.” After their breakfast, Jesus does not ask Peter
to profess his faith again, to confess his sin again, or even to
apologize again for his denial. Jesus asks Peter to declare his
love. So may our work in union with the risen Jesus be fruitful,
our community inclusive, our love selfless, our mercy boundless, and our witness faithful—even unto death.

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY ‐ 2ND SUNDAY OF EASTER ‐ DIVINE MERCY
How appropriate today’s Gospel for this Jubilee Year of Mercy, both because of the “breakfast” Jesus
provides (“a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread”) and the number of fish in Peter’s net (“one hundred fifty
-three”) (John 21:11–12). Of the fish, Saint Augustine suggests that the roasted fish is the suffering Christ.
Saint Gregory the Great adds that Christ lowered himself to swim in the “water” of our humanity; to be
caught in the “net” of our death; to be “roasted” in his Passion on the fire of suffering. Saint Jerome claims
that “one hundred fifty-three” represents the full number of known species of fish, signifying that the Church’s “net” has room for
all our widely diverse humanity, securing our unity-in-diversity in the hands of Peter and his successors. Having received God’s
mercy as “the beating heart of the Gospel,” may the Church—we—“pattern [our] behavior after the Son of God who went out to
everyone without exception” (Misericordiae Vultus, 12).

3RD SUNDAY OF EASTER ‐ REDEMPTION
Do you remember Peter on the night
Jesus was arrested? He claimed he had
never heard of Jesus. Today we are called
to join Peter in testifying to the name of
Jesus as he does in the first reading, and in
proclaiming our love for him as Peter does
in the Gospel passage. The powerful imagery of John’s vision in the second reading from the book of Revelation shows us
the company we keep when we have faith
in the name of Jesus. We join all living creatures, “countless in
number” from “heaven, earth, under the earth, in the sea; everything in the universe” (Revelation 5:11, 13). The dignity and
majesty described in each reading are in stark contrast to the
dark and pitiful image of Peter and the other apostles at the
time of Jesus’ arrest, trial, and crucifixion. What a relief that
we can all be redeemed so completely!

Estuve muerto y ahora, como ves, estoy vivo por
los siglos de los siglos.-- Apocalipsis 1:18a
Estimados Feligreses,
Todos los domingos de esta temporada de Pascua nos dan la oportunidad de contemplar, junto con los neófitos, el misterio de la resurrección de Cristo. Dondequiera que
miramos en las lecturas de hoy nos encontramos con signos de la vida abundante de
Dios y el perdón. La iglesia proclama la Buena Nueva. Los apóstoles pescan un gran
número de peces. Pedro es perdonado. Celebremos este día recordando señales de la
vida de resurrección en nuestro mundo y en nuestras propias vidas.

¿CÓMO VA LA PESCA?
Nos ha tocado ver como en diferentes lugares del mundo se
siguen persiguiendo a cristianos para torturarlos brutalmente;
que impresionante es lo que leemos hoy en los Hechos de los
Apóstoles acerca de Pedro y otros discípulos, a quienes se les
ordena que ya no sigan enseñando y Pedro hablando en nombre
de todos se rehúsa a seguir esa orden. Hay que notar que ese
valor no fue lo que tuvo al principio. Al inicio del Evangelio de
este domingo, esos mismos discípulos parece que vuelven a sus
anterior oficio, el pescar. Pero esa elección parece no darles
resultados hasta que Jesús, irreconocible, los hace admitir que
su "antiguo trabajo", aunque seguro y estable, no les da el resultado que esperan. Solo hasta que obedecen a Jesús empiezan
a ver resultados --peces en la red-- y es cuando reconocen a su
ayudante: "Es el Señor". Lo que sigue es también una enseñanza para nosotros. Jesús les dice a sus discípulos que le lleven
algunos de los pescados que acaban de atrapar, pero el almuerzo ya está listo, "unas brasas de carbón con un pescado y pan".
Jesús quiere nuestro mejor esfuerzo, pero él siempre puede
preparar y proveer lo que necesitamos:
palabras de aliento cuando nuestros mejores esfuerzos parecen fallar.
Después de su almuerzo, Jesús no le pide a Pedro otra vez que
profese su fe o que confiese su pecado o que se disculpe por su
negación. Lo que Jesús le pide a Pedro es que declare su amor.
Que nuestro trabajo en unión con Jesús resucitado sea fructífero, nuestra comunidad incluyente, nuestro amor desinteresado,
nuestra misericordia sin límites y nuestro testimonio fiel, aun
hasta la muerte.

¿QUIÉN VIENE A ALMORZAR?
Después de proveer una pesca que ninguno de nosotros podría realizar, Jesús
ofrece una amistad que ninguno de nosotros podría ofrecer: "vengan a almorzar". Una liturgia celestial
reveladora concibe a una comunidad "incontable". Así que "los
ciento cincuenta y tres" peces, san Jerónimo sugiere representa
el número total de especies mediterráneas conocidas entonces;
es la manera en que el Evangelio acierta en que en la Iglesia
hay lugar para todos. Pedro recoge toda la red de manera segura y sin que esta se rompa y la lleva a Jesús. El Papa Francisco
llama a esta unidad "reconciliada en la diversidad". Que tan
oportuno es el perdurable ideal de san Agustín, especialmente
durante este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia: "En lo esencial,
unidad; en lo no esencial, libertad; en todas las cosas, caridad".

AÑO JUBILAR DE LA MISERICORDIA ‐ TERCER DOMINGO DE PASCUA
Que tan oportuno el Evangelio de hoy para este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia, esos detalles que hay en esta
historia: "el desayuno" que Jesús prepara (asa unos pescados en el fuego) y el número de peces en la red de
Pedro ("ciento cincuenta y tres") (Juan 21:11-12). Acerca de los pescados, san Agustín dice "los pescados asados son símbolo de Cristo sufriente". San Gregorio el Grande también dice: “Cristo mismo bajó a las ‘aguas’
de nuestra humanidad; para ser atrapado en la 'red' de nuestra muerte; para ser 'asado' en su pasión del fuego del sufrimiento". San
Jerónimo clama que los "ciento cincuenta y tres" representan el número de especies conocidas de peces, significando que la "red" de
la Iglesia tiene espacio para todas las personas, reafirmando nuestra unidad en la diversidad en las manos de Pedro y sus sucesores.
Habiendo recibido la misericordia de Dios como el "corazón palpitante del Evangelio", que la Iglesia --nosotros-- hagamos "suyo el
comportamiento del Hijo de Dios que sale a encontrar a todos, sin excluir ninguno" (Misericordiae Vultus, 12).

La adoración es la primera actitud del hombre que se
reconoce criatura ante su Creador. Exalta la grandeza
del Señor que nos ha hecho (cf Sal 95, 1-6) y la omnipotencia del Salvador que nos libera del mal. Es la acción
de humillar el espíritu ante el “Rey de la gloria” (Sal 14,
9-10) y el silencio respetuoso en presencia de Dios
“siempre [...] mayor” (San Agustín, Enarratio in Psalmum 62, 16). La adoración de Dios tres veces santo y
soberanamente amable nos llena de humildad y da seguridad a nuestras súplicas.
