Dear Parishioners,
Today as we gather at God’s invitation, we hear Jesus’ commandment to love one another. Let us be
grateful today for a God who loves us so much, and pray for the grace to put into action this commandment of Jesus, whether it be toward family and dear ones or toward the strangers we encounter on the
street. Let us learn to love one another as Jesus has loved us. Fr. Wilfredo
5TH SUNDAY OF EASTER
Paul's back! After last week's "violent abuse," opponents organized a lynch mob that beat Paul nearly to death. But call Paul
the "energizing evangelist," transforming deadly cruelty into
life-giving zeal. Paul's past courage should inspire our commitment; Revelation's future "new heaven, new earth" should inspire our optimism. But Revelation's present assurance,
"Behold, God's dwelling is with the human race," should challenge us to become "missionaries of mercy." Because, when
announcing the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis declared
that the Church's credibility is completely dependent on our
showing unconditional mercy. Mercy, said Francis, makes the
Church, the world, and everyone young again, reawakened to
life's noblest virtues. Appropriately, today's Jubilee Day for
Youth looks forward to July's World Youth Day in Krakow,
whose theme is "Blessed are the merciful." Fittingly, in today's
Gospel Jesus reinforces that theme: "This is how all will know
you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
"I GIVE YOU A NEW COMMANDMENT" Last week, the Good Shepherd declared, "My sheep hear my
voice." This week, we hear Jesus loud and clear: "I give you a
new commandment: love one another." In case we wonder,
"What's new about that?" Jesus specifies exactly what he
means. "As I have loved you, so you also should love one another." Jesus loved us more than himself! Paul explained,
"Jesus emptied himself, taking the form of a slave; humbled
himself, obedient even to death on a cross." Nearly seventeen
hundred years ago, Saint Cyril of Alexandria preached: "To
love as Jesus loved us? That really is something new: for our
love to go that far! Nothing can come before the love we have
for our brothers and sisters. No possessions. Not our reputations. Not even our lives! For our neighbors' salvation, we
should be ready to die, as Jesus' first disciples did!"
"BEHOLD, I MAKE ALL THINGS NEW" Two of those disciples, Paul and Barnabas, describe their trials
as something we should all be ready for: "It is necessary for us
to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God." But
that suffering pales compared to the success they never ex-
pected: God "opened the door of faith to
the Gentiles." Their do-and-dare zeal
dares us to make their story ours. True,
Revelation's "new heaven and new
earth," with "no more death or mourning,
wailing or pain," isn't something we can
accomplish. But "Behold, I make all
things new," says Jesus--present tense.
For Jesus can indeed work in us and
through us to begin conquering human
malice with gospel goodness. So Jesus calls us, Pope Francis
says, to put a smile on our faces as we reach out to embrace all
who live a marginalized existence, call each of them by name,
care for the frailties of the weakest, and support first tottering
steps on shaky knees, certain that whatever we do for the very
least of our brothers and sisters, we are doing for Jesus himself.

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY ‐ 5TH SUNDAY OF EASTER ‐ JUBILEE DAY FOR YOUTH
This Sunday’s “Youth Jubilee” previews July’s World Youth Day in Krakow. Its theme from Matthew 5:7,
“Blessed are the merciful,” echoes Pope Francis’ warning that “the practice of mercy is waning in the wider
culture.” In countercultural witness, therefore, “the time has come,” says Francis, “for the Church to take up
the joyful call to mercy once more. It is time to return to the basics and to bear the weaknesses and struggles
of our brothers and sisters.” Jesus affirms the same in today’s Gospel. “As I have loved you, so you also
should love one another” (John 13:34). Francis concludes, “The Church’s very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and
compassionate love.” Jesus too asserts, “This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John
13:35). Thus mercy “makes young” the Church, the world, and everyone. “Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with hope” (Misericordiae Vultus, 10).

ports of widespread damage to buildings, roads and other infrastructure. Communica ons are down or intermi ent, further complica ng damage assessment and need. Given the widespread impact, Catholic Relief Services is coordina ng with other humanitarian organiza ons and our partners to determine priori es. Es mados Feligreses, Hoy al reunirnos por invitación de Dios, escuchamos el mandamiento de Jesús de amarnos los unos a
los otros. Seamos agradecidos por un Dios que nos ama tanto y pidamos la gracia de poner en práctica este
mandamiento, ya sea con nuestros familiares o seres queridos, o con las personas desconocidas que nos
encontremos en la calle. Aprendamos a amarnos unos a otros como Jesús nos ha amado.

QUINTO DOMINGO DE PASCUA
¡Pablo regresa! Después del "violento abuso" de la semana
pasada, los opositores organizaron una multitud para darle a
Pablo una golpiza que casi lo dejó muerto. Pero llamemos a
Pablo "el evangelista energizante," capaz de transformar la
crueldad mortal en fervor que da vida. El valor de Pablo debe
inspirar nuestro compromiso; El nuevo cielo, y la nueva tierra
del Apocalipsis debe inspirar nuestro optimismo, y la seguridad
de la revelación, "He aquí, que Dios habita con la raza humana.” Esto debe desafiarnos a ser misioneros de la misericordia.
Porque, cuando el Papa Francisco anunció el Año Jubilar de la
Misericordia, declaró que la credibilidad de la iglesia es totalmente dependiente de la misericordia incondicional que mostramos nosotros. Misericordia, dijo Francisco, rejuvenece a la
iglesia, al mundo y a todos nosotros, y despierta las más nobles
virtudes de la vida. Adecuadamente, hoy día, el Jubileo de los
Jóvenes se enfoca en Día Mundial de la Juventud, a celebrarse
en Julio en Cracovia, cuyo tema es "Bienaventurados los misericordiosos". Consecuentemente, en el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús
refuerza ese tema: "Así es cómo todos sabrán que son mis discípulos, si tuviereis amor los unos a los otros".
"LES DOY UN MANDAMIENTO NUEVO" La semana
pasada el buen pastor declaró, "mis ovejas oyen mi voz." Esta
semana escuchamos a Jesús alto y claro: "os doy un mandamiento nuevo: amarse los unos a otros." En caso de que nos
preguntemos, "¿Qué es nuevo? Jesús especifica exactamente lo
que quiere decir. "Como yo os he amado, así también deben
amarse unos a otros." ¡Jesús nos amó a nosotros más que a sí
mismo! Pablo explicó, "Jesús se despojó de todo, tomando la
forma de un esclavo; se humilló a sí mismo, obediente hasta la
muerte en una cruz." Casi diecisiete siglos atrás, San Cirilo de
Alejandría predicó: "¿amar como Jesús nos amó? Eso es realmente algo nuevo: que nuestro amor pueda ir tan lejos. Nada
puede tener más prioridad que el amor que tenemos para nuestros hermanos. Ni las posesiones, o nuestra reputación. ¡Ni siquiera nuestras vidas! Debemos estar dispuestos a morir para
lograr la salvación de nuestro prójimo como los primeros discípulos de Jesús lo hicieron".
"HE AQUÍ QUE YO HAGO TODO NUEVO" Dos de los
discípulos, Pablo y Bernabé, describen sus pruebas como algo
para lo que todos debemos estar preparados: "Es necesario pasar por muchas dificultades para entrar en el Reino de Dios".
Pero ese sufrimiento es poco en comparación con el hecho de
que Dios "abrió la puerta de la fe a los gentiles". Su celo y atrevimiento nos reta a hacer nuestra su historia. En verdad, el
"cielo nuevo y la tierra nueva," del Apocalipsis con su "no más
muerte o luto, llanto o dolor," no es algo que podemos lograr.
Pero "He aquí, yo hago todas las cosas nuevas," dice Jesús en
tiempo presente. Jesús, de hecho, puede trabajar en nosotros y a
través de nosotros para empezar a erradicar la maldad humana
con la bondad del Evangelio. Jesús nos llama, dice el Papa
Francisco, para poner una sonrisa en nuestras caras al abrazar a
todos los que viven marginados, a llamar a cada uno de ellos
por su nombre, a atender a las debilidades de los más débiles y
a ayudar a dar sus primeros pasos a las rodillas tambaleantes y
torpes, con la seguridad de que todo lo que hagamos por los
más pequeños de nuestros hermanos, lo hacemos por el mismo
Jesús.

la ciudad de Cracovia. El tema de la Jornada es “Bienaventurados los misericordiosos”, haciendo eco a la advertencia del Papa Francisco de que “la práctica de la misericordia está disminuyendo ampliamente en la cultura”. Como testigo contracultural, por lo tanto, “el tiempo ya llegó” dice el Papa Francisco, “para que la Iglesia aumente la invitación alegre a la misericordia una vez más, regresar a los orígenes, cargar las debilidades y dificultades de nuestros hermanos y hermanos”. Jesús afirma lo
mismo en el Evangelio de hoy. “Así como yo los he amado, así también ámense los unos a los otros” (Juan 13:34). El Papa Francisco concluye “la misma credibilidad de la Iglesia es vista en cómo muestra misericordia y amor compasivo”. Jesús acierta al decir “en
esto conocerán todos que son mis discípulos, si aman los unos a los otros” (Juan 13:35). Por lo que la misericordia “hace joven” a la
Iglesia, al mundo y a cada persona. La misericordia es la “fuerza que resucita a una vida nueva e infunde el valor para mirar el futuro
con esperanza” (Misericordiae Vultus, 10).

tud golpeó a Ecuador, matando a por lo menos 350 perso‐
nas, un número que se espera que aumente. Este es el terremoto más fuerte que Ecuador ha experimentado des‐
de 1979. Centenares más han resultado heridos, y hay informes de grandes daños a edificios, carreteras y otras infraestructuras. No hay comunicación o es intermitente, complicando aún más la evaluación de los daños y necesi‐
dades. Dado el impacto generalizado, Catholic Relief Servi‐
ces está coordinando con otras organizaciones humanita‐
rias y afiliados para determinar las prioridades. Agua, ali‐
mentos y refugio de emergencia serán las mayores necesi‐
