PLAYLISTS: Our holiday music obsession continues
by Eric & Roxie Yonkey
Last issue we discussed making playlists for your
electronic devices. We promised to talk about holiday
playlists this time.
New Year's Eve is the final day of the year, but we
will start with that since it's the most recent holiday.
That list is a combination of New Year's specific
songs such as Auld Lang Syne, dance music and
tunes about the passage of time.
Kansas became a state Jan. 29, 1861. We are currently developing a list for Kansas Day that features
19th century music and tunes that would fit Kansas,
such as "Dust in the Wind" -- by Kansas, of course.
Roxie is from Nebraska and Nebraska Day is March
1, 1867. Many of the songs for Kansas would work for
Nebraska as well.
We celebrate Mardi Gras, Kansas Style at our
house. And parties here require their own playlist. We
actually have several Mardi Gras-related lists: Dixieland, Ragtime, Blues, Pop Swing and the one actually
named Mardi Gras. The one named Mardi Gras includes our one zydeco album, Mardi Gras-specific
music and music that references Louisiana and/or the
Mississippi Delta region.
Valentine's Day includes songs that specifically reference Valentine's Day and love songs across all
genres and musical eras.
Celtic Tunes is our March playlist. Everything Celtic or specifically Irish goes into this list for St. Patrick's
Day.
For Easter, we have Easter Bunny songs that
mostly celebrate eating candy and numerous religious songs, including the Bethany College Oratorio
Society's performance of The Messiah and St. Matthew's Passion.
May brings graduation, the end of school and the
beginning of summer activities. We play Graduation
Day for graduation. After school gets out on the last
day, we crank up School's Out. If we spend a weekend at the lake, we often play Beach Party, songs
about summer. If we have a cookout, we can play
Good Eats, songs about food and eating.
Summer also brings the patriotic holidays, Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day. We have
two mixes for them, Patriotic Mix and Geography Lesson. Patriotic Mix features songs like "The StarSpangled Banner" and "God Bless the USA". Geography Lesson is filled with songs about American cities
and states.
Fall brings Halloween and Thanksgiving.
We discussed our Halloween lists last time.
For Thanksgiving, our list features Renaissance and Baroque music, plus songs about
being grateful. Why Renaissance and Baroque music? Because the original settlers
came during those periods.
People fussed over the Mayan calendar
ending. We found that absurd, but we couldn't resist developing a list. The End of the
World was a major downer to listen to, but
we enjoyed the irony of it all.
Winter arrived with "the end of the world",
so we created Winter list, songs about snow,
ice and cold. "Winter Wonderland" and
"Frosty the Snowman" cannot be found in
any of our Christmas lists. They are in Winter, along with Vivaldi's "Winter" from his
"Four Seasons" suite and "Skaters' Waltz".
We copied our Christmas music CDs into
iTunes this year. After weeding out duplicates and songs we disliked, we ended up
with 527 songs. That's too much for one
playlist. So we split them into Christmas Religious and Christmas Secular, then further
into Christmas Classical, Christmas Crooners (like Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra),
Christmas Fusion (like Mannheim Steamroller and Trans-Siberian Orchestra), Christmas
Instrumentals, Christmas Jazz, Christmas
Smooth Jazz, Christmas Swings. Bach's
Christmas Oratorio and Handel's Messiah
each had their own list.
Then we wound up the old year and began the new with New Year's Eve.
Yes, we are obsessed with playlists.
