Bottle opener
Description
The bottle opener by Giovanni Alessi is an object whose function is not immediately obvious. On the contrary, its
function is concealed, though its mode of operation is in actual fact simple and ingenious. To open a bottle, one
is surprised to find oneself making the gesture of putting the cap back on. The opener is placed onto the top of the
bottle, pressed as if to put the cap on, and the cap is removed and held by a magnet inside the bottle opener (2).
The movement is enhanced by the pleasure of handling an ovoid shape in stainless steel. Objects can be classified
in many ways, and one division is between those whose function is immediately obvious, and in this area there are
already many bottle openers of excellent quality. Then there are those magical objects that solve a simple everyday
gesture in an unexpected way, such as this bottle opener named Stappo. “Giovanni jr. is Alessio’s son, Carlo’s grandson, and the great-grandson of Giovanni, founder of Alessi. Like several fourth-generation cousins, he takes pride in
using both our family surnames: Alessi Anghini. After having worked for a period at Stefano Giovannoni’s studio in
Milan, Giovanni is taking his first steps in the career of designer. A short while ago he showed us this bottle opener,
functioning with an ingenious pressure-opening system: a good idea that represents his Opus One, and that we were
pleased to develop and manufacture.”

Giovanni jr. is the son of Alessio, grandson of Carlo and great-grandson of Giovanni, founder of Alessi. Like a number of his fourthgeneration cousins, he makes a point of using both of the family surnames: Alessi Anghini. After a period at Stefano Giovannoni’s
studio in Milan, Giovanni is taking his first steps in the designer’s profession. A short while ago he showed us this bottle opener
featuring a pressure opening mechanism, an ingenious idea in this his “opus one”, that we were happy to develop and put into
production.
