Background
St. Paul's Convent School has been designated by the Education and Manpower Bureau as a
Professional Development School (PDS) since September 2005, focusing on using creative media
production for effective learning. This PDS status has further enriched the Creative Media
Curriculum established in 2000, evolving this impetus into the Creative Media Centre @ SPCS
(http://spcscm.hkmediaed.net), now serving the whole school and supporting other schools in Hong
Kong.
The objectives of the Centre are:
* Facilitating creative and effective use of digital media in the broad curriculum
* Promoting Creative Media and Communication Studies in schools’ curricula
We achieve these goals through various programme means, including:
* Teaching (see Section 1);
* Resource development (see Section 2);
* Enrichment programmes (see Section 3);
* Production (see Section 4), and;
* Teacher training & professional sharing (see Section 5).
The following sections will elucidate what we have done so far.

1. Teaching
We have been providing the Creative Media Curriculum to all Form 3 students since 2000 and have
organised media workshops for students in other Forms.
1.1. Our pedagogic framework:
Our pedagogic framework presents a three stage learning model, denoting some general experiences
of Project Based Learning (PBL) using digital media. The theoretical background of this project
work approach will be detailed in a separate article. These stages include:
(i) Conceiving initial production ideas: at this stage, students make their knowledge explicit.
(ii) Creating a production with a material medium: at this stage, students render their existing
knowledge and organise it in the form of a media production.
(iii) Communicating with audiences: at this stage, students dialogue with different audiences through
their productions. Collected audience opinions help encourage students to question the basis of their
existing knowledge and possibly to transcend it.
These stages present recurring, spiralling learning cycles. Students begin with a three stage cycle
then progress to another three stage cycle at a deeper level, progressively developing high order
thinking (critical thinking). These various stages of media production are not isolated from each
other; they cannot simply be taken as something unidirectional and in chronological order. In many
cases, the publication or distribution of a media text may occur simultaneously with the production
of that media text (e.g. the case of a weblog) and the hands-on production may precede the full
development of the production idea. However, this three stage framework can help conceptualise
which technology is relevant to a particular aspect of communicative experience, systematically
constructing the knowledge base of digital media practice in schools and facilitating the
development and management of teaching resources.
These three stages are outlined below:

(i) Conceiving project ideas
When a student conceives a production idea or gathers information regarding a particular subject,
they employ numerous ‘resources’ including, but not limited to, significant informants, search
engines, subject gateways, databases, TV and radio, any of which may comprise or influence that
student’s perception.
The teacher’s role: Helping students make their knowledge explicit, encouraging them to make
informed choices in selecting and using media sources.
Knowledge and skills involved, for example:
* Topic selection/issue spotting. Students are guided toward a general topical theme and
encouraged to identify more specific areas of interest and controversy.
* Organization/Planning. Students clarify the task, determine what they already know and what
they need to learn. Questions posed include: what do I have to do (including timescale, audience)?
What do I already know? What do I need to find out?
* Investigation/research. Utilizing different media sources, students develop and apply their
research skills to investigate the issue. Opening links to relevant articles and information resources,
students will also employ multiple search engines, subject gateways and databases to increase their
access to relevant information.
* Critical thinking/discrimination/evaluation. Students consider their starting information along
with the provided and discovered information sources. Students check resource validity, reliability
and credibility and establish how current or obsolete their resources are. Students will be invited to
weigh: Validity - Is the information accurate? How is the accuracy determined? Do other credible
sources controvert, challenge or substantially modify the source information? Reliability - Does the
information source have a reputation for accuracy? Is it subject to impartial review? Has the
student found reason to trust or doubt the information source? Credibility - Who provided the
information? Do they have a reputation for truthfulness or mendacity? Are they potentially biased? If
biased, how are they biased and does it matter here? Perishability - How current is the information?
Are amendments anticipated?
Teaching resources:
As an example, “Cyber Detective” is an information literacy training package jointly developed by
HKMediaEd.net and HKedCity.net (for more resources, please visit:

(ii) Creating a production with a material medium
When a student creates a production, there are various tools that can help and shape the production,
such as media downloads, authoring software and webmaster resource sites that help the student to
connect ideas and/or create their own ideas.
The teacher’s role: Helping students render their existing knowledge and organise it in the form of
a media production, encouraging them to make informed choices in designing the form and content
of their media text.
Knowledge and skills involved, for example:
* Media language
--DC/ DV/ Animation Basic
--Framing
--Sequencing, structuring, plot,
--Genre and style
--Meanings and representations
* Data representations in computer
--Text encoding concept, such as working with simple English, Big5, Gb2312, Unicode
--Image encoding concept and different formats, such as bit map image concept, vector image
concept, image compression concept, working with JPEG, GIF, RAW, TIFF, EPS
--Audio encoding concept and different formats, such as audio sampling concept, audio
compression concept, working with WAV, MP3, WMA, RM
--Video encoding concept and different formats, such as video compression concept, Codec & AVI
container introduction, working with uncompressed AVI, Div-X AVI, MPEG, WMV, RM, MOV
--Other formats, such as SWF, Animated GIF, PDF
* Authoring software
--Windows Movie Maker
--Adobe Premier
--Flash
--Other software and online resources that support media production
Teaching resources:
As an example, ‘Kar2ouche’ is cross-curricular, role-playing software for producing pictures,
storyboards, animations, movies, comics, handouts, posters and magazines (for more resources,

(iii) Communicating with audiences
Screenings and classroom presentations are not the only way for a student to communicate with an
audience. Channels such as personal websites, weblogs, instant messaging, discussion boards and
online polling may also help distribute a production.
The teacher’s role: Enabling students’ dialogue with different audiences through their productions.
Collected audience opinions help encourage students to question the basis of their existing
knowledge and possibly to transcend it. The teacher also helps students begin another production
cycle, enabling them to experience a higher level of ‘conceiving’, ‘creating’ and ‘communicating’.
Knowledge and skills involved, for example:
* Major competitions
--Interschool video competition organised by HkedCity
--IFVA organised by Hong Kong Arts Centre
--Other competitions in Hong Kong and in the international context
* Screenings and distributions
--Distributors in Hong Kong and in the international context
* Communicating through the Internet
--Internet structure, such as the roles of ISPs, Servers and Clients, Domain name and IP
addressing concept, Internet applications: HTTP, FTP, RTSP, MMS
--Website building, such as web hosting services, uploading a web page, registering on search
engine, registering a domain name, trouble shooting on web pages connectivity
--Streaming technology, such as difference between Streaming media and Downloaded media, the
roles of Live encoder and Streaming server, connecting to a Live encoder or Streaming server,
multicasting within an Intranet
--Video & Audio conferencing technology, such as video conferencing equipments and structure,
VOIP technology and structure
Teaching resources:
As an example, the Interschool Video Competition organised by HKedCity is an annual event that
awards outstanding student works and helps distribute student works in a wider context (for more

1.2. An illustration:
The three stage framework presents some recurring, spiralling learning cycles rather than a single
phase learning activity. Students begin with a three stage cycle then progress to another three stage
cycle at a deeper level, progressively developing high order thinking. The cooperation between the
Creative Media Curriculum and the EPA Curriculum at SPCS since 2004 can help illustrate these
recurring and spiralling learning cycles:
1.2.1. The learning cycle of a class exercise (the 4 picture exercise)
Conceiving production ideas:
--Show students some previous 4-picture stories produced by digital cameras.
--Arrange students to work in groups and conceive their own 4 picture stories.
Creating a production:
--Invite students to stage their story and take 4 representative pictures of that story.
Communicating with audiences:
--Screen the student works, students giving feedback on each other’s work.

Session 13: Media & audiences
Communicating with audiences:
Session 14: Presentation (photo/video montage introducing a project idea or a
finished production). Selected works may need to be further developed and may be
invited to enter competitions and to participate in screenings. Selected groups will
be allowed to further develop their project reports based on their media work,
replacing their group project work in a social and humanities based curriculum (e.g.
EPA).
1.2.3. The learning cycle of the subsequent EPA assignment
Conceiving production ideas (conceiving the idea of the essay):
Questions that help revisit their production idea and challenge their initial question:
* What is your argument? What is your answer to your question?
* What are the advantages and disadvantages of the form and style of your media
work?
* Recall any critical comments about your work. Whose comments and why? How
do you feel about these comments and how did you respond?
* Elaborate your argument using further references. Is there any refinement or
amendment of your theme?
* What conclusions have you reached about the achievement and limitation of your
work?
Creating a production (writing the essay):
* 300-500 word essay in English
* Proof reading service and presentation training offered by native English speaker.
Communicating with audiences (presentation using the media work and the
essay):
* Presentation
* Discussion

Two teams from SPCS have won prizes for their creative media works in a Video competition
organized by the Wan Chai Area Committee of the Home Affairs Department and the Methodist
Centre. Winning 2nd Runner Up for their video "鬼.汰.狼"(Old City Ghosts) were Jennifer Chan,
Zita Chan, Vivian Choi, Doris Chong, Genevieve Ho and Gloria Kam, all from 3U. Taking the
Champion prize for their video, "尋船記" (Exploring Ship Street) were Yandy Hsu, Erica
Cheung , Evelyn Lam and Kennes Lau, all from 3S. Good luck to the teams as their videos have
been submitted in another competition organized by HKedCity. Photos from the awards presentation

Reviewing the 6MC of the WTO (see Blog article 20051219)
There are many lessons to learn from 6th World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference... not
just about economics and foreign trade policy. We have been observing the activities with a keen
interest in the presentations of competing positions and the methods (media) parties chose for

WTO - Mediated Perspectives (see Blog article 20051214)
Hong Kong was hosting the 6th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization in Dec
2005. This International news hits home, as the conference's events are occurring here in the Wan
Chai School District. It is useful to study the world coverage of the event which includes many
different opinions being presented in many different ways. The Creative Media Centre took a

Interschool Project-based Video Competition (see Blog article 20051226)
On November 26th, Saturday, the opening workshop of the 3rd Hong Kong Interschool
Project-based Video Competition launched at St. Paul's Convent School with a teacher training
section by Mr. Chitat Chan on 'Creativity, Media and Education’. Students and teachers participating
in this competition gathered here and shared some exciting ideas. This competition is organised by
Hong Kong Education City and Smart Campus, co-organised by Education and Manpower Bureau,
Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, Hong Kong Media Education Resources Web,

On Friday (November 18th), photographer Pakchai came to speak to Creative Media students about
cultural preservation and his work archiving “old” Wan Chai before it vanishes. His inspiring lecture
presented many ways in which media can be used to raise awareness of important social issues.

The Photography and Video Society invited students to join our Christmas party on December 9th
during lunch time in the garden. We had a lot of delicious food and hosted a fun "Photo Hunt"! The
party was practically free for members ($2) and only $5 for non-members.

A new book entitled "Creative Campus Channel" has been published by the Hong Kong Institute of
Contemporary Culture (HKICC) and may be purchased in bookstores now for only $60HKD. A copy
of this book is available in the Creative Media Centre on the 6th Floor. The book describes an
ongoing project designed by HKICC that arranges for lectures and workshops promoting media
education in Hong Kong. Our PDS partner teacher, Wing-Fai Lee, and SPCS's own Chitat Chan

Panoramic vistas were once only available with the right equipment... special lenses, trick cameras,
extensive darkroom work. Now that whole process has become much more convenient and
accessible through software developed by the University of British Columbia. Autostitch is the

We develop and support subject-based application of digital media, and we collect relevant
subject-based media resources for teachers. For example:

Interactive Television (see Blog article 20060109)
Check out Laykin's Corner on "What's Up After 8", a new Hong Kong based interactive talk show
with an international focus. Part of the leading edge of entertainment technology and offering a new
level of viewer participation, this show is broadcast from the studios of The Interactive Channel,
"TIC-TV". You can call, SMS, e-mail, and video-conference in during the program to ask questions,
make comments and contribute to an always lively discussion. The Creative Media Centre has a
'behind the scenes' production role in this new genre, and internship placements are available for

See the Future "Outside the Classroom" (see Blog article 20051201)
Revealing the potential of ICT and set in the very near future, the video short film, "Vision 2010"
offers an intriguing preview of developing information and communication technologies as well as
revealing another dimension of advertising. Produced by the Japanese telecommunications giant
NTT DoCoMo, this dramatic work casts technology in a very humanitarian context. We found the
video to be technically sharp and well paced. The featured technology is now on our wish-list.

teaching practice. On 16th Nov 2005, Louisa Yim was in our Media Laboratory demonstrating to her

Closing ceremonies for the World Firefighters Games on February 25th featured an awards
ceremony, a gourmet Chinese buffet and high-calibre entertainment by many talented performers,

February 18th brought cool weather for the parade and opening ceremony of the World Firefighters
Games. SPCS marched along and entertained firefighters from over 37 different countries. Greeting

Opening events for the World Firefighters Games commenced on February 17th 2005, ongoing from

On February 16th at 3p.m. in Hong Kong, 6p.m. in Melbourne, 9a.m. in Western Cape and 7a.m. in

The Empire of Tea (see Blog article 20051114)
On November 12th, the historic Beijing-Hong Kong School Dialogue Programme launched at SPCS
with a lecture by Professor Alan Macfarlane on “The Empire of Tea.” Students and staff from Hong
Kong and Beijing schools were connected in cinema-sized, real time video conference projections as
they attended the lecture, asked questions and shared their views. This exciting programme is
sponsored and initiated by Li Ka Shing Foundation and Cheung Kong Centre for Creative Industries
of the Law School of Shantou University. It is co-organized by the Education and Manpower Bureau,
HKSAR, the Beijing Municipal Education Commission and the Ministry of Education. See some

Classroom of the Future - Open Now! (see Blog article 20051114)
Last week saw the SPCS prototype "Classroom of the Future" open with the Sesquicentennial new
wing amidst other auspicious events. Among the luminaries attending the opening were the
Honorable Donald Tsang, Hong Kong Chief Executive, Professor Arthur Li, Hong Kong Secretary
for Education and Manpower, and "Mr. Geihaiyan", the anthropomorphic robot from Hong Kong's

Speech Day Today! The Future is Now... (see Blog article 20051110)
SPCS was honored to host Hong Kong Chief Executive Officer, Donald Tsang, as keynote speaker.
CEO Tsang helped SPCS open the campus' new wing addition along with the Classroom of the
Future. During today's festivities, the Creative Media Crew photographed, filmed and
simultaneously webcast the special events. We also facilitated a live video conference between
SPCS classes and Haybridge High School in England. Broadcasting from the Classroom of the
Future in another episode of their ongoing cross-cultural dialogue, the participating students
discussed Hong Kong's WTO conference and related media coverage.

5. Teacher training and professional sharing:
We organise and participate in seminar, training and consultation, and we have developed strategic
partnerships with local and international organisations. For example:
SPCS in Singapore (see Blog article 20060313)
Joining other Hong Kong schools, a delegation from SPCS, including Sister Margaret, Mrs. Clare
Cheung, Mrs. A.M. Law, Mr. Chan, Mr. Maxwell and Mr. Tang, travelled to Singapore in March
2006 to visit and liaison with Singaporean secondary schools regarding educational applications of
ICT. Highlighting the trip were presentations by Singapore's Ministry of Education, and National
Institute of Education and a visit to NIE’s “Classroom of the Future”. Photos from the trip are

January 20th brought a significant PDS (Professional Development School) sharing session to SPCS,

The ICT Register is a well known database maintained by the Specialist Schools and Academies

The Media Center MediACT in Korea is a non-profit organisation founded by the Korea Film
Commission in 2002 and run by the Association of Korean Independent Film & Video. Dong-won
Jo, Kyu-hun Hong and Hye-mi Park of MediACT joined the New Media & Social Transformation
International Conference in Hong Kong during 9th-10th Dec 2005 and then visited the Creative
Media Centre @ SPCS on 11th Dec. Wing-fai Lee of Buddhist Wong Wan Tin College and Chitat
Chan of SPCS shared with them the development of new media education in Hong Kong, the
collaborative initiatives of HKMediaEd.net, SPCS and other Professional Development School (PDS)
partner schools.

discussion forum for independent media groups from all over the world regarding "new media" and
its utility for social engagement. International themes for this conference emphasized cross-cultural

CMC@SPCS and PDS (see Blog article 20051115)
This year SPCS has been appointed by the Education and Manpower Bureau (EMB) as a
Professional Development School (PDS) focusing on enhancing effective learning through creative
media production. At St. Paul's, Creative Media is part of the formal curriculum, as well as an
extracurricular option. SPCS is providing professional support to PDS partner schools as they
implement Creative Media Projects.
Buddhist Wong Wan Tin College is including creative media project in their Form 3 Arts
Curriculum, Computer classes and Campus TV activities. Christian & Missionary Alliance Sun Kei
Secondary School is organising seminars for teachers and workshops for their Campus TV team and
their computer teachers.
Confucian Ho Kwok Pui Chun College is training their science and computer teachers and
organising a series of media workshops using extracurricular openings. Lam Tai Fai College has also
lined up a group of teachers to develop their campus TV.
On 25th Nov 2005and 20th Oct 2005 Chitat Chan conducted workshops for teachers and students at
Confucian Ho Kwok Pui Chun College.
On 20th Sept 2005 and 14th Oct 2005 Chitat Chan conducted workshop for teachers and students at
Christian & Missionary Alliance Sun Kei Secondary School.
