HEAD COACH COMPARISON
COLTS HEAD COACH CHUCK PAGANO
BROWNS HEAD COACH ROB CHUDZINSKI
Coaching Years in NFL: 12th Year
Colts Head Coach: 2nd Year
Overall Regular Season: 11-5 (.688)
Overall Postseason: 0-1 (.000)
Coaching Years in NFL: 10th Year
Browns Head Coach: 1st Year
Overall Regular Season: 0-0 (.000)
Overall Postseason: 0-0 (.000)
The Cleveland Browns named Rob Chudzinski as
the 14th full-time head coach in franchise history
on January 10, 2013.
Chuck Pagano's 2012 season proved to be one of
the most inspirational stories in NFL history. Named
head coach of the Indianapolis Colts on January
25, 2012, Pagano was forced to take a leave of absence just three games into the season after being diagnosed with
acute promyelocytic leukemia, a curable form of the disease, which
is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow cells.
Chudzinski comes to the team after spending the past two seasons
(2011-12) as the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers.
Overall, Chudzinski’s résumé includes 19 years of experience, including nine seasons in the NFL.
Offensive Coordinator Bruce Arians assumed interim head coaching
duties and he and the Colts defied the odds and rallied to a 9-3 record.
During that time frame, Indianapolis secured a playoff berth and accomplished one of their primary goals – extending the season for
Pagano. Some of the victories during Arians' term included a comeback win against Green Bay (Week 5) after trailing by 18 points, an
overtime victory on the road at Tennessee (Week 8) and a last second
victory in Detroit (Week 13). In all, the Colts posted a 9-1 record in
one-possession games in 2012, including winning their last eight.
Chudzinski re-joins the Browns organization, where he spent the
2004 season as tight ends coach and 2007-08 as offensive coordinator. In 2007, he orchestrated Cleveland’s best offense in terms
of total yards (5,621), passing yards (3,726) and points scored (402)
since the club’s return in 1999.
In 2011, during Chudzinski’s first season with the Panthers, the
team set club records for total yards (6,237) and first downs (345),
one year after experiencing franchise lows in both categories. Carolina also scored 48 touchdowns after recording 17 the year prior
to Chudzinski’s arrival. The Panthers also moved from last in total
yardage to seventh, marking the biggest improvement in the league
since the St. Louis Rams went from 27th in 1998 to first in 1999. In
2011, Chudzinski tutored Cam Newton, who became the first rookie
in NFL history to throw for 4,000 yards, while setting an NFL record
for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 14 en route to being
named the 2011 Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year.
The Panthers also became the first team in league history with three
700-yard rushers in DeAngelo Williams (836), Jonathan Stewart
(761) and Newton (706).
As much as Chuck Pagano inspired the 2012 Colts, the team did just
the same for their ailing head coach. From his hospital bed, Pagano
was in constant communication with the coaching staff and players.
He analyzed practices while continuing to game-plan schemes. Along
the way, Pagano continued to make his presence felt. After the team's
Week 9 victory against Miami, the head coach gave a moving postgame speech to the contingent in the locker room.
"I've got circumstances," Pagano told the locker room. "You guys
understand it, I understand it. It's already beat (referring to the
leukemia). It's already beat. My vision that I'm living is to see two
more daughters get married, dance at their weddings and then hoist
that Lombardi Trophy several times."
The Panthers went from two wins in the year before Chudzinski’s
arrival to winning six in 2011 and seven in 2012, including victories
in the final four games this past season. Wide receiver Steve Smith
eclipsed 1,000 yards receiving both seasons under Chudzinski.
Pagano made another return three weeks later during the team's
win against Buffalo where he appeared in Owner & CEO Jim Irsay's
suite while saluting the crowd on hand. Pagano received a rousing
ovation from Colts fans in attendance.
Chudzinski had two stints with the San Diego Chargers where he
served as the assistant head coach/tight ends coach from 2009-10
and tight ends coach from 2005-06. He worked with tight end Antonio Gates, who was voted to the Pro Bowl in each of Chudzinski’s
four seasons with the team. Gates recorded 1,157 receiving yards
in 2009 and 1,101 in 2005, marking the only times he has eclipsed
the 1,000-yard plateau in his career. In four seasons working with
Chudzinski, Gates averaged 72.3 receptions, 991.0 yards and 9.3
touchdowns per season, compared to an average of 58.8 receptions, 726.1 yards and 7.7 touchdowns in six seasons without
Chudzinski.
As the regular season came to an end, the culmination of Arians'
stretch as interim head coach concluded with the team's playoffclinching victory at Kansas City (Week 16). The stage was set for
Pagano to return after missing 12 weeks of action.
Division rival Houston visited Lucas Oil Stadium in the regular season finale in hopes of clinching the AFC's No. 1 seed in the playoffs.
The Colts were not deterred, however, as the team corralled the
emotion in Pagano's return and compiled a 28-16 win to finish the
regular season with an 11-5 record. The real victory, however, was
the return of a healthy Chuck Pagano. It was a day the Colts organization and fans will remember for generations.
In 2007, he guided the Browns’ offense as they scored 402 points
and totaled 5,621 net yards of offense, both figures which ranked
as third-best in franchise history. Wide receiver Braylon Edwards
set franchise records with 1,289 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns, tight end Kellen Winslow set a career-high with 1,109 receiving yards and running back Jamal Lewis finished fifth in the NFL
with 1,304 rushing yards. The Browns won 10 games, which are
the most victories by the team since 1994 (11).
Indianapolis' playoff run ended earlier than the team had wished
after falling to the eventual Super Bowl XLVII champion Baltimore
Ravens in an AFC Wild Card playoff contest. What was not lost
were the numerous team and individual milestones that the Colts
established in a season facing low expectations. Most notably, the
11-5 record was a nine-win improvement from the 2011 campaign,
which tied for the third-largest one-year turnaround in NFL history.
The Colts also registered their 12th 10-plus win season in the past
14 years, which is the most of any NFL team since 1999. Pagano
and Arians were honored together by the Maxwell Football Club as
the recipients of the 24th Annual Earle "Greasy" Neale Award for
Professional Coach of the Year. The two also garnered AFC Coach
of the Year honors as winners of the annual NFL 101 Awards.
Pagano was selected by the PFWA as the winner of the 2013
George Halas Award, given to an NFL player, coach or staff member who overcame the most adversity to succeed. Each year, the
Fritz Pollard Alliance Foundation recognizes individuals who make
a difference in diversity and inclusion at an annual awards banquet.
In February of 2013, Pagano received the foundation's Game Ball
Award for the differences he has made to level the playing field in
the NFL for minorities.
Chudzinski began his pro coaching career in 2004 as the Browns’
tight ends coach, where he worked with first-round draft choice,
Kellen Winslow. During that season, Chudzinski was elevated to offensive coordinator for the final five games following Butch Davis’
resignation as head coach.
From 1994-2003, Chudzinski coached at his alma mater, the University of Miami (Fla.). He spent two seasons (1994-95) as a graduate assistant, five (1996-2000) as tight ends coach and three
(2001-03) as offensive coordinator. During his three seasons as offensive coordinator, the Hurricanes played in a BCS Bowl game
each year, including two National Championship appearances. He
helped shape future NFL Pro Bowlers Bubba Franks, Frank Gore,
Andre Johnson, Willis McGahee, Bryant McKinnie, Clinton Portis,
Jeremy Shockey and Kellen Winslow.

DOUBLE-DIGIT VICTORIES
With their 10th win of the season in 2012, the Colts became the
second team in NFL history to win 10-or-more games after losing 14-or-more the previous season. The Miami Dolphins also
accomplished the feat, finishing the 2008 season 11-5 after posting
a 1-15 mark in 2007.
The Colts also notched their 12th 10-or-more win season in the past
14 years, which is the most of any NFL team since 1999. The Colts
have posted a 151-73 (.674) record since 1999, which ranks second
behind the Patriots.
TAKING THEM BACK
