My mom deserves to be honored. Deuteronomy 6:5 says, “To
love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your mind and all
your soul.” She loved this verse. She loved this verse so much
that she had a license plate made that said “DEUT 6.”

21A Psalm 23 Perspective
In early June of 2011, my wife Marcie and I travelled to New
Zealand to visit the Missler’s newly founded ministry headquarters
at The River Lodge. As a Koinonia House Board Member, I had
heard a lot about this new venture and wanted to see it for myself.

rs. Nancy Missler, age 77, went to be with the Lord November 11,
2015. Nancy has loved our Lord Jesus Christ for over 50 years.
She asked Christ to come into her life in 1957 at Hollywood
Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles. That same year, while
attending UCLA, Nancy met and married Chuck, her husband of 58
years. Nan has published 13 books including: The Way of Agape, Be Ye
Transformed, Faith in the Night Seasons, The Kingdom, Power & Glory,
and her latest, Hope Against Hope. Her materials have transformed lives
and marriages around the world. Nancy is the founder of The King’s High
Way Ministries — an international ministry dedicated to encouraging
and teaching Christians how to “walk out” their faith in God’s Love.
Preceded into heaven by her son, Charles “Chip” Missler. Survived
by: husband of 58 years, Charles “Chuck” Missler; son, Mark (& Lisette)
Missler; daughters, Lisa (& Mark) Bright & Meshell Missler; brother,
Martin (& Gail) Klitten and eight grandchildren.
Be encouraged. There is hope. God is a real and personal God. He
is faithful and He loves us, even though at the moment we might
not see it nor our circumstances show it. Be assured, God knows
our every need and is working “all things together for our good.”
He is a God who can be known and seen even in the darkest of times…
That’s our hope! That’s the “anchor of our soul.”

roverbs 31:28 says “Her children will stand up… and bless her.” My mom
deserves to be honored. Deuteronomy 6:5 says, “To love the Lord
your God with all your heart, all your mind and all your soul.”
She loved this verse. She loved this verse so much that she had
a license plate made that said “DEUT 6.”
She served….. She served her family. She served others. She served
God and reflected the fruit of His spirit. AGAPE – is a word that
will always remind me of my mom. She would sign off all the time,
“Agape, Nan or Agape, mom.”
She poured her heart into every book she wrote. Many people
would write to her after one of her seminars or after reading one of her
many books; and she would always take the time to handwrite a note
back to everyone who reached out to her. Even after e-mail came out

many years ago she still would take the time to handwrite each person.
Literally hundreds of thousands of letters she wrote in her lifetime.
She had only one mission…. To show God's Agape Love….
To somehow convey that God is faithful and He is worthy of trust.
She was faithful and loved God, worshiped Him, served Him, talked
with Him and now she is with Him. There was never a time in her life
that she walked away from the Lord or lost her faith. He was her faithful
friend and now she is with Him. I can only imagine her in heaven
receiving “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
Claudia Lovejoy wrote so eloquently about my mom and I wanted
to share this with you.
“How do I describe Nancy Clark Missler?
The woman whose heart was captured by the King.
The disciple who showed me how to forgive.
The Christian who stored her treasure in heaven.
The wife whose tears watered a garden of grace.
The teacher who taught us all how to overcome. The leader whose walk matched her talk. The wanderer whose only home was Heaven.”
When I met Nancy Clark Missler many years ago, I was deeply
discouraged by my experience with organized Christianity. Though I
hadn’t walked away from Jesus, I had decided to trust no one. I especially
mistrusted Christian leaders, and whenever I attended a seminar or study,
I would walk in late, sit in the back row and keep my head down. I still

wanted Jesus, but I was no longer willing to open my heart to human
beings. Too many disappointments. I was done.
I was also tired of hearing testimonies that claimed miraculous
transformation through faith, because I no longer believed that
emotional healing or spiritual freedom was even possible. I had adopted
the philosophy: “Life is hard, then you die, then you go to heaven...
and then it’s better.” Until one day someone talked me into attending a “Way of Agape”
study. I took my seat in the shadows and tried to ignore all the female
chit-chat as I waited for the video to start. I remember the attractive
woman on the tape had perfectly styled hair and I thought to myself:
“Oh great... another talking head for Jesus.” What had I not heard? But then this woman said her life was a mess even though she and
her husband were Bible teachers. My ears perked up a little. She said
they’d been on the verge of divorce even though they were leaders in
the Church. I sat up a little straighter. This woman explained that, even

really no clue concerning
Agape love. Okay, she had
me. This woman was worth
listening to. Someone was
actually addressing the
giant question mark within
my mind. Someone actually
had the courage to say,
“You can believe and still
be missing the heart of the
Gospel by a million miles.” That someone was Nancy Clark Missler, who would later
become my friend as well as my teacher. Never put off by my
questions or impatient with my brokenness, she listened. She shared.
She stood with me... not above me. She didn’t give spiritual suggestions.
She gave me her heart. In truth, Nancy gave spiritual CPR to me when
I could no longer breathe.
And I was not her first patient,
nor would I be her last. She was
ever willing to give an answer
for the hope that was in her,
and this wisdom was offered
with gentleness and respect.
For in God’s unique plan, this
bright soul was also a woman
of sorrows, well-acquainted
with grief, and she was not
frightened by the pain of
others.
This lovely woman knew
well the ugliness of the human
heart, and her life work was

to steer that heart back into communion with God. Nancy was an
extremely diligent worker, and seemingly tireless in prayer, in study
and in meditation upon His Word. She never stopped asking, seeking
and knocking upon the door of the Lord. She wanted to learn, and
whatever she learned, she faithfully shared with the rest of us through
books, tapes and seminars.
And there was something else about Nancy that earned my deepest
admiration. She was not a respecter of persons. It didn’t matter whether
she was in the presence of a waitress, a weirdo or a world-famous leader,
she treated everyone with honor and respect. This was one of the things
I loved most about her. Her kindness wasn’t stored up for the few, but
was lavished upon the many. No man, woman, child or creature ever
stood in her presence without knowing they were worthy of her time
and attention.

MY MOM
y mom taught me not to brag.. but today is meant to celebrate her
life... so I want to brag on her a bit!
I am not sure if all of you are aware of her ministry, it started
about 40 years ago as she began to wonder, What does it mean
to love God? And how do we do that in a practical way? It started as a
word study and became The Way of Agape – a study that has transformed
lives all over the world. This book has sold over 400,000 copies and now
is available in Spanish, DVDs, leader’s guides with all sorts of resources
for small groups. It didn’t stop there, she went on to wonder. “What does
it mean to renew your mind?” (Be Ye Transformed) She found and taught
a practical way of taking every thought captive; giving your emotions
to God and letting Him work through you! She continued to write
about what God was teaching her through the trials in her life. She went
on to author Faith in the Night Seasons (how to have unshakable faith
despite circumstances), Private Worship, Reflections of His Image, Kingdom
Power and Glory and Hope Against Hope, which talked about what
God was showing her through struggle with cancer. These are “heftier”
in-depth studies have sold over 750,000 copies. She also wrote some
“Plain and Simple” smaller books. My personal favorite, which I think
should be required in all pre-marital counseling is Why Should I be the
First to Change? I don’t have time to do them all justice, so in a quick
review: The Key (how to let go and let God), Against the Tide (getting
beyond ourselves), The Choice (Hypocrisy or real Christianity), Never
Give Up (the fruit of Long-suffering), Tomorrow May Be Too Late
(Discovering our Destiny – which was written after the sudden death
of my brother). These practical how to books that are written from her
personal experiences have sold over 300,000 copies. So basically my
mom has sold over 1 million books!! But here is what she would want
you to hear: writing was not her natural gifting. She got a C in English.

At her high school reunion, her English teacher was shocked that my
mom had become an author (she would have been the “least likely
to…”). My mom was able to do all this because she was pursuing God
and she was willing and obedient to do what He called her to do.
These studies took off and she ended up teaching conferences all
over the world: U.S. and Canada, U.K., China, New Zealand, Australia
and even Tasmania are just the ones I remember! Unlike my dad,
she was not a natural born speaker. She sought the Lord in every detail
and would prepare for weeks before a conference. She had a nervous
tick, her nose would run every time she got on stage or in front of a
camera. So she always had a piece of Kleenex tucked in her sleeve.
Speaking was not her gifting, but she saw it as an opportunity to help
others. She loved encouraging others.
She started her ministry, The King’s Highway, to encourage
Christians in how to practically walk out their faith. Giving Christians

the tools to be real, to love others with God’s unconditional love,
to renew your mind, to have unshakable faith… all to change lives!
She has followers all over the world, and not just women there are a ton
of men that write about how her books have changed their lives and
have saved their marriage.
My mom was the most amazing lady. One quality that stands out to
everyone who meets her is how other centered she was. She genuinely
cared about everyone she met and would ask them about their lives …
even in her final days, the Hospice nurses talked about how they have
never had a patient, who despite their own pain and suffering, would ask
them about their day and how they are doing. There was no “Nancy”…
it was all Jesus, everyone that met her saw Jesus.
She bore this horrible cancer like a saint, never complaining or
blaming someone else. Just carrying her burden and seeking Jesus.
She wrote her last book Hope Against Hope to encourage others who are
on the same journey of suffering. Even after that book was published,
she continued to write, what she called The Last Chapter. She worked on
it tirelessly. At one point the tumor pushed one eye out of alignment
and she started seeing double, so we patched one eye and she continued
to work. As her sight gave out, we got her bigger and bigger magnifying
glasses. She continued to write up until that last week as “she wanted to
encourage others that there is an eternal purpose in all of this suffering.
Our strength comes when we view our circumstances through a Heavenly
perspective. That God has a purpose for every detail of our lives.”
She spent most of her life writing what the Lord was teaching her through
her trials. She wrote to encourage others! Would you spend your final
months, weeks, days writing? I can’t say confidently that I would…
maybe for my kids... I don’t like my answer for that.. but my mom did,
she wrote for the glory of God!
Now, don’t get me wrong, she wasn’t perfect. She has written quite
a bit about her errors and attempts to fix things. She was very real.
She didn’t attempt to cover up her inadequacies, but would publicly
share and laugh at some of her most embarrassing moments.
There is one example that comes to mind that still embarrasses me today.

She often told it at her seminars or I wouldn’t dare share it now. At one
point, my parents were having some marriage difficulties so my mom
read all she could about how to fix her marriage. She tried the advice
that one magazine promoted and met my dad at the door in nothing
but Saran Wrap! That was my mom, all in, doing whatever it would
take! The Saran Wrap wasn’t the answer, but she shares the story and
guides others to what God showed her did work, His unconditional
Love. She was genuine and real about her emotions. She led by example.
Here is what I did, here is what I learned from my mistake, and here
is what God showed me would have been the right way to handle it.
She found all of life to be a teaching tool, to deepen her relationship
with God.. trailblazing a path for others to follow!
And I KNOW that she is with our Lord Jesus Christ right now.
This is a celebration of her life, which she dedicated to the Glory of
God, and I am confident that she is dancing in Heaven right now!
She is not there in that casket, that is the vessel her soul used while she
was here on earth. She boldly finished her race well and she is encouraging
us to follow, to put our faith in things eternal…
In Hope Against Hope, She wrote: “Be encouraged. There is hope.
God is a real and personal God. He is faithful and He loves us, even
though at the moment we might not see it nor our circumstances show
it. Be assured, God knows our every need and is working ‘all things
together for our good.’ He is a God who can be known and seen even in
the darkest of times…That’s our hope! That’s the ‘anchor of our soul.’”
I also found this paragraph in her Last Chapter manuscript. She first
quotes Charles Spurgeon who said, “Hope is like a star, not to be seen
in the sunshine of prosperity, but only to be discovered in the night of
adversity.” My mom continued “I certainly have found this to be true
in my own life this past year. Hope is like a golden cord connecting me
to heaven. The more I cling to this cord, the more I will allow the Lord
to bear the weight of my burdens and the more I draw closer to him.”
She reached her goal. She is with Jesus now.

n early June of 2011, my wife Marcie and I travelled to New Zealand to
visit the Missler’s newly founded ministry headquarters at The River
Lodge. As a Koinonia House Board Member, I had heard a lot about
this new venture and wanted to see it for myself. At the end of our
three-week stay, Chuck asked Marcie and me to move to New Zealand
and join them. Although we were profoundly honoured by the offer,
we politely said we’d pray about it and returned to our ministry in
England. By mid-July, Chuck had renewed his urgent request for us to
join Nancy and him. To be honest, the cost and risk of such a venture

for us seemed crazy. Finally in late August of 2011 Marcie and I made
the long journey from England to New Zealand with the full intention
of seeking the Lord for the right way forward.
To our amazement, as we began to talk and collectively seek the
will of God, Nancy became the prime mover in our conversations. Her
passion for this new ministry opportunity was infectious. Chuck, who
most see as the voice of the Missler family, sat back and listened with
all of us while Nancy waxed lyrical on their vision for ministry from
their New Zealand base. Marcie, who previously had expressed to me
that she did not see how this whole relocation would work, was now
very excited to take the leap of faith in spite of the obvious risks. After
days of conversation and prayer, we agreed to move toward a ministry
partnership that would see us stepping down as the pastor of Calvary
Chapel Portsmouth, selling our house, and moving everything to literally
“the ends of the earth.”
On Thursday, September 15, 2011 at 5:26 PM, Nancy Missler wrote
on the Kings Highway website:
“Most people our age are looking forward to moving into nice, quiet
rest homes; we’re flying all over the place like “crazy people,” but having
the time of our lives!”

“The wonderful news is that Ron Matsen and his wife Marcie (from
our London office) are going to be joining us here in New Zealand.
We are ecstatic about this! He will be helping to start Lyonshead
Media Center, which will film all that goes on here at the Lodge.
One of the names Ron suggested we call The River Lodge is “the L’Abri
of the South Pacific.” L’Abri is a French word that means shelter or rest.
The first L’Abri community was founded in Switzerland in 1955 by
Dr. Francis Schaeffer, who was a very well-known Christian theologian
and philosopher. The L’Abri communities are study centers in
Europe, Asia and America where individuals have the opportunity
to seek honest questions about God.”
Nancy continued, “Since L’Abri means shelter or rest we thought
Psalm 23:1-3 would be a very appropriate description of our vision for
The River Lodge.

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie
down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness
for His Name sake.”
1)The River Lodge will be a place people can come to rest beside
the “still waters.” (It’s a beautiful piece of property, surrounded
on three sides by the largest river in New Zealand).
2)The River Lodge is a place where souls can be restored (One of
our main purposes will be to help people be refreshed, renewed
and re-filled in the Lord).
3)The River Lodge is a place where Christ can lead us in the
paths of righteousness (It’s a place where God’s Word will be
taught, shared and prayerfully “lived”).
“We again appreciate your love, support and prayers so very much.
We need them! The enemy does not like what we are doing here.
Yet, with your prayers and by God’s hand, the enemy is being overcome.
May the Lord lead you into green pastures; may He lay you down by
the still waters; may He restore your soul; and may He lead you into the
paths of His righteousness.”
“You are always in my prayers… Agape, Nan”
Our prayer is that God will fulfil the Missler’s vision of making their
home at The River Lodge in New Zealand a place where the Body of
Christ can be refreshed, nourished and strengthened.

A FRIEND

In fact thru the years we made it tuff.
It’s not about church and updated fashion,
It’s truly about Reigniting the Passion.
It’s a race to see who gets thru the gate,
Tomorrow (you know) May be too Late.
There is The Key, The Choice to go Against the Tide.
The joy of trusting Jesus, sit back enjoy the ride.
Never Give Up there are plenty of reasons.
You must believe that there is Faith in the Night Seasons.
Her life was Private Worship, we all know her story,
She would say for thine is The Kingdom, the Power and Glory.
Jesus met her there and I'm sure He’d said look
I’m an author too, and your name is in my Book.
