About Junior Achievement
Junior Achievement is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating students about work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy taught through
experiential, hands-on programs. In our
local area during the 2014-2015 school
year, Junior Achievement of Greater New
Orleans (JA) brought this valuable information to nearly 25,000 students in over
1,000 classrooms with the assistance of
195,000 hours of volunteer contact!
Through unique programs, JA offers
students a glimpse into real-life situations
by teaching sequential curriculum from
kindergarten through 12th grade. From
creating jobs that build a community to
generating wealth and learning how to
manage it, the students learn to think like
adults.
Each program is delivered by volunteers from the community who share their
business, financial and life experience
while teaching the JA curriculum. Their
stories and lessons are often the key takeaways that inspire and empower students
to envision themselves in business roles
that may not have crossed their minds
prior to their JA experience. Through
JA programs and the volunteer’s commitment, young people’s dreams begin
to take shape and the seeds of business
models are born.
JA has been offering its educational programs in the local area since 1955. Program
sare taught in public, private and parochial
schools throughout JA’s 12 parish service area
in southeast Louisiana. Fifth and sixth graders
visit JA’s “kid-city,” JA BizTown, where they
run a town complete with 13 businesses and
experience life as an adult. By the end of the
day, they have earned a paycheck and learned
the responsibility and respect of a day’s work.
For seventh through twelfth grades, Capital
One/Junior Achievement Finance Park offers
students a chance to take on a new identity
complete with salary, bills and financial choices. The goal for the day is to balance a monthly budget but the result has a positive life-long
effect.
Junior Achievement is a 501(c)3 non-profit
organization sponsored by corporate, individual and foundation contributors. JA is located
at 5100 Orleans Avenue in New Orleans.
Junior Achievement USA is headquartered in
Colorado Springs, Colorado. For more information on JA programs, becoming a volunteer
or to become a contributor to our mission,
visit www.jagno.org, like us on Facebook
(www.facebook.com/jagno) or follow us on
Twitter (@JAneworleans).
The 2014-2015 Junior Achievement programs were
available to the students of our community thanks in
part to over 195,000 volunteer hours shared.

At the 12th Annual City Stars Soirée, guests were
entertained by the 610 Stompers.
12 Years of Rising Stars!
On Friday, October 9th, friends and supporters of
Junior Achievement gathered at JA BizTown for the
12th Annual celebration of Junior Achievement’s City
Stars Soirée. This fête was located at JA’s facility on the
City Park campus of Delgado Community College and
honored both the children of our area and the young
entrepreneurs that act as their role models in both business and community leadership.
During the Soirée, 6 young entrepreneurs and
city leaders were recognized as Rising Star recipi-
ents. Guests enjoyed music and dancing by The Wise
Guys, delicious cuisine courtesy of New Orleans’ finest restaurants and libations provided by Republic
National Distributing and Crescent Crown Distributing
Company. They strolled around JA’s kid-city partaking
in caricature drawings, tarot card readings and bidding
on more than 100 fabulous auctions items. And for the
second year in a row, Junior Achievement welcomed the
610 Stompers as special entertainment and they brought
the house down!

Empowering Business Minded Students
Time for a checkup? Contact us to learn ways to
volunteer and feel great!
Junior Achievement of Greater New
Orleans (JA) empowers young people to own
their economic success. This focus on workforce development, entrepreneurship and
financial literacy fosters a partnership between
the business and education communities in
our area. In simplest terms, JA, its programs
and its trained volunteers, seek to link classroom learning to the everyday demands of real
life in a free enterprise economy.
JA provides economic education
to young people in grades kindergarten
through 12 within their own classroom.
This in-class continuum from grade-tograde is built upon sequential, hands-on
economic programs presented by classroom volunteers from the business community, local colleges and universities, as well
as parents (providing introduction to some
of the first conversations about economics
between parent and child). These programs
teach young people business principles,
decision-making and critical thinking skills.
Most importantly, these school programs
provide the link between volunteer role
models and the student’s real life.
To strengthen and reinforce this, JA
offers two site-based programs: JA BizTown
for 5th and 6th graders and Capital One/
Junior Achievement Finance Park for 7th
through 12th graders. Both programs begin
with up to 18 hours of classroom preparation
leading to experience based learning at the
respective site-based facilities.
Be it in-class or on-site, students who
experience JA programs benefit from role
play that hopefully will one day be used to
promote and grow our community. Call
Valerie Hulse for more information at (504)
569-8672 or [email protected].
It’s a Bird!
It’s a Plane!
It’s a JA Bowling
Superhero!!
The Bowl-A-Thon was a striking success, with nearly 40 companies participating and
over 140 teams bowling. It is Junior Achievement of Greater New Orleans’ largest “people
dependent” annual fundraiser. With the help of our fundraisers, JA provides the program
materials to the volunteers at no charge. This insures that students are exposed to dynamic
role models who reinforce the importance of education and staying in school while laying
a foundation for success. The more funds raised, the more programs JA can provide and
the more students reached!
The bowlers at Creole Lanes in Houma, Rock ’n ’Bowl and Fulton Alley in New
Orleans and Bowling USA in Slidell had a ball while raising a record breaking gross revenue of $150,000 for JA financial literacy programs. JA celebrated their success and honored the bowling teams with an Awards Party on July 17 at Rock ‘n’ Bowl. To get a head
start on bowling in 2016, please contact Gail Smith at (504) 569-8657 or [email protected].
JA appreciates the support of the 2015 Bowling Superheroes.
