Simbang Gabi Novena of Masses: Simbang Gabi is nine morning
December 14, 2014, 3rd Sunday of Advent
Simbang Gabi Novena of Masses: Simbang Gabi is nine morning Masses at 5:30 a.m., leading up
to Christmas. The “dawn Masses” were started by Spanish missionaries in the Philippines to allow workers attend
Mass before going to work. Traditionally, a breakfast is served after the Masses.

Gaudete
The Church names this third Sunday of Advent
Gaudete not for no reason! In the fourth and fifth
century, a fast of forty days in preparation for Christmas was introduced, starting on the day after the
feast of St. Martin (12 November). Then Advent was
called "St. Martin's Lent.” In the ninth century, Advent was reduced to four weeks and by the twelve
century the 40 days of fasting had been replaced by
simple abstinence. Despite these changes, Advent
remained primarily as a penitential season, which
was a kind of counterpart to Lent, the third Sunday
of Advent corresponding to the Laetare Sunday of
Lent. On Laetare Sunday what were forbidden during Lent like flowers and organ, were now permitted
to be used; priests and deacons wore rose-colored
vestments instead of purple. In the Latin Church,
like Laetare Sunday of Lent, in Gaudete Sunday of
Advent the Church suspends all penitential practices;
flowers, organ, and rose-colored vestments are used
in order to signify the nearness of the Lord's coming.
His nearness is the most important reason for the
Church to rejoice (Gaudete is Latin for “rejoice”).
In this Gaudete Sunday we meet John the Baptist
again. In words and deeds, John confirms the fact
that God’s coming is very near. In fact, the nearness
Deacon Anthony
Huong Le
of God can be detected in John’s urgent message of
repentance. Paradoxically, this leads many to confusion thus they come to ask whether or not he is the
Messiah. John admits that, “I am not the Christ,” (Jn
1:20) the anointed One despite the fact that John’s
anointing happened in the womb of his mother
(Luke 1:15, 44). He is not even Elijah who was expected to return from heaven (see 2 Kings 2:11); he
refuses to be acknowledged as the prophet who Moses foretold (Deuteronomy 18:15-19) though John
delivers God’s message and words. In other words,
John is here to prepare for the coming of the true
Light. Therefore, he shows us the true reason for
Christmas, the Son of God become man in the flesh
and dwell among us. Yes, Christ is the light that
scatters the darkness of sin and death. He is our joy;
therefore, let us gaudete with Mary:
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked upon his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me
blessed (Luke 1:46-48).
P.S. In the spirit of joy I sincerely thank you for
your prayers and sacrifices which, I am convinced, have paved the way for my deaconate ordination on Nov 15, 2014. I pray that Christ will
forever be your joy. Merry Christmas!

Faith and Prayer
Liturgy 101:
Birthdate of Jesus
The opening of the third millennium harmonized with the traditional
date for the first Christmas. Without
a doubt, the birth of Jesus is the most
important event to celebrate in a new
millennium. But there is plenty of
doubt about when that birth took
place.
There is no clear historical record
of the date and year of Jesus’ birth.
Although two of the Gospels record
incidents pertaining to the event, neither assigns a date.
Two main theories surround the
choice of Dec. 25th to commemorate
the nativity . The first theory looks to
a third-century Roman pagan celebration coinciding with the winter solstice. As the days began to lengthen
each year, Dec. 25th became a festival
for the rebirth of the unconquered sun.
Christians, who believed Christ was
the real unconquered source of light,
put His birth date on the same day.
The second theory looks to the
passion of Jesus. According to early
conjectures, the actual day of Christ’s
passion fell on March 25th in the year
Jesus died. Some Christians believed
that Jesus died on the anniversary of
His conception. For this reason,
March 25th became also the celebration of the Annunciation. Looking
forward nine months, the birth of Jesus was placed on Dec. 25th.

Holy Spirit Ministry for Family Consecration
The Ministry for Family Consecration (MFC) cordially invites you to our first year anniversary celebration at Holy Spirit Parish.
The Vatican has and will put great emphasis on
the Church’s pastoral care of the Family during 2014
and 2015. The recently concluded Extraordinary
Synod of Bishops (the gathering of bishops from
around the world with the Holy Father), which was
held in Rome last October, was the first of three major events to unfold.
Next year, from September 22-27, 2015, the US
will be hosting an exciting event, the VIII World
Meeting of Families, an international gathering of
Catholic families for days of prayer, catechesis and
celebration of the gift of family. As we have heard
recently from CNN and other major TV networks, it
is now confirmed that Pope Francis will make his
first papal visit to the US in support of the VIII
World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia. Finally
in October 2015, the Ordinary Assembly of the Synod of Bishops will take place in Rome.
Each family, couple or individual in attendance
will be given a portrait of The Holy Family that was
seen, and blessed by Sr. Lucia herself. By simply
attending, you will also be entitled to receive a raffle
ticket for a chance to win prizes!
Date: Sunday, December 28, 2014
Time: Assembly after the 11:00 a.m. Mass
Place: Small Hall
Activities: Lunch & Fellowship
Enthronement Ceremony Prayer
Rosary to honor Our Lady of
Fatima (to be led by 6th-8th Grade
Catechism Class)
Space is limited and will be on a first come/first
serve basis. Call Shirley Arcelo at 510-861-1072 or
Debbie Leoncio at 510-396-0249.
Pope Francis shared this message last Feb. 20th:
“We are called to acknowledge how beautiful, true,
and good it is to start a family, to be a family today.
We are called to make known God’s magnificent
plan for the family … as we accompany them amidst
so many difficulties.”
In this season of Advent, let us be one with Pope
Francis in his prayer intentions for December: “That
the birth of the Redeemer may bring peace and hope
to all people of good will and that parents may be
true evangelizers, passing on to their children the
precious gift of faith.”
Join us in celebrating the Feast of The Holy Family and us as members of God’s family!
Let us not be justices of the
peace, but angels of peace.

Stewardship
To Be a Christian Steward
Stewardship Corner
- from the USCCB
"As each one has received a gift, use it to
serve one another as good stewards of God's
varied grace." (1 Pt 4:10).
What identifies a steward? Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly is one answer; so is generous giving of time,
talent, and treasure. But being a Christian steward means more. As Christian stewards, we
receive God's gifts gratefully, cultivate them
responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with
others, and return them with increase to the
Lord.
