1.
A completed Registration Form (Both Sides)
2.
$50 Registration Fee (non-refundable): This fee is not included in your tuition. It pays for the work required
to enter your name and contact information into both paper and computer records, to start your scheduling
process, and also for the time we may spend communicating with you to be sure you’re comfortable with every
aspect of the time you will be spending with us.
All of this takes place as soon as we receive your form, so, even if you need to cancel, the work has already been
done; therefore, the fee is non-refundable. However it is a one-time charge, so, no matter how many weeks you
register, the fee is only applied once for each student.
3.
$200 Deposit for each week selected: Deposits guarantee your place in what often become sold-out programs.
On May 1, we send student lists to our faculty for the coming season with the understanding they will be paid for
these students. Therefore, after May 1, Program Deposits are non- refundable.
4.
$25 Coached Ensemble Option deposit for each week selected: After May 1 deposits are non- refundable.
If you choose this option, which may only be taken ALONG WITH ONE OF OUR INSTRUMENTAL

Please complete this page only if you plan to participate in the Coached Ensemble Option
COACHED ENSEMBLE OPTION
If you choose to register for Coached Ensemble, please bear in mind that THIS IS NOT A CHAMBER MUSIC
PROGRAM. The whole focus at SummerKeys is on personalized individual instruction aimed at helping each
participant to improve instrumental, vocal, or compositional skills. The Coached Ensemble Option is designed to
introduce participants to the experience of learning to play music as part of a duo or group and is set up as follows:
•
No tape or audition is required and novice players are welcome to participate.
•
Late Monday afternoon, having worked with all students requesting Coached Ensemble, the faculty meets to
decide what groups or duos may be formed, so that each person will derive maximum benefit from the
Ensemble experience.
•
They are careful to select works of excellent quality, but works which also may be accomplished in the four
daily coaching sessions, which culminate in the optional performance of the selected work.
•
Music and schedules for the coaching sessions are distributed at the Monday evening social or left at the office,
as the student prefers.
•
Every effort is made to organize groups of three or more players, but our experience has shown that
participants have greatly benefited from the ensemble experience, even when two persons (such as cello/piano,
piano 4-hands, cello/cello) are involved.
•
By signing below you agree to accept whatever the faculty decides will work best for you. WE DO REGRET
THAT THERE CAN BE NO LAST MINUTE CHANGES.
•
If you decide after the Monday night meeting that you are not going to participate in
an ensemble that has been formed for you, please understand that you will not be
entitled to a refund of any kind.
•
Advanced students willing to accept these conditions are welcome to participate.
•
Please note that Celtic Harp students do not need to sign up for Coached Ensemble, as
it is included in your classes.
•
There is no “Jazz” focus in Coached Ensemble, but pianists understanding this, may
enroll.
If you’ve already had some ensemble experience, please describe:

PLEASE NOTE; IF YOU ARE COMING WITH A PRE-FORMED GROUP, SUBMIT THE MEMBERS’ NAMES,
INSTRUMENTS, AND THE SPECIFIC WORK TO BE COACHED NO LESS THAN FOUR WEEKS IN ADVANCE OF
YOUR ARRIVAL. WE WILL DO OUR BEST TO ACCOMMODATE.

ONLY 2016 SUMMERKEYS MAILING
Seasonal Salutations to All!!
“When the climate outdoors is spiteful
SummerKeys looms so invite-ful
June’ll be here before you know
Leave your coats, grab your notes and let’s go!”
And you can bet we’ve been making plans for this to be one of the most
exciting and eventful seasons we’ve ever offered!
All of our wonderful, magical, irreplaceable faculty will be returning, seemingly
as besotted with the place as the rest of us. There ARE some changes and
edits. Mandolin will now be a solo course, still taught by Marilynn Mair, but
without the Enigmatica group, so the Mandolin Concert will not take place;
mandolin students may now signup for coached ensemble. Andrea Hoag had
the great idea of extending her new “Fiddle” workshop to include viola and
cello, as well as violin.
“Piano” will offer two new formats: (D) four hours of scheduled practice only
and (E) ‘keyboard harmony,’ a concentrated extension of the method Bruce
often teaches in his Theory classes, allowing pianists to use the “Chopin” style
of voicing to create beautiful bass lines for pop ballads.
Tuition will remain the same as 2015. Better yet, in an effort to attract more
high-strings attendance, we’re offering a $50 tuition credit to any person
recommending a new violin/viola or fiddle student to SummerKeys. Also, the
same limited amount of scholarship help is available to students with a genuine
need. Please remember that we work all season with the Lubec Summer
Recreation Program for youngsters, teaching piano and offering
demonstrations on other instruments on a “pro bono” basis. You can help us in
both of these efforts with a donation to “Summer Keys Music, LLC”, PO Box
481, Lubec, ME 04652, keeping in mind that your gift will not be tax-deductible.

New SummerKeys Programs 2016
Photo Master Classes: July 25, August 8
Intense three-day classes for experienced photographers. Requires Director’s Approval $500
(Limited enrollment)
PHOTO MASTER CLASS FACULTY
Frank Van Riper
7/25, 8/8
Frank Van Riper is a documentary and commercial photographer, author, lecturer
and columnist. Author of several bestselling books, his work is in the permanent
collections of the National Portrait Gallery, the Smithsonian American Art
Museum and the Portland Museum of Art, Portland, Maine.
Creative Writing II- Cleaning, Pressing, and Alterations: Revising your draft: July 18, August 15
Daily classes for writers who have already taken the first week, or have a completed draft they
want to work on improving.
$375
CREATIVE WRITING II FACULTY
John Rule
7/18, 8/15
JD Rule is Lubec’s Resident Novelist with eight titles currently in print. In this
workshop participants who have already completed their first draft will spend
five days of self and group evaluation, analysis of characters and their roles, and
the fine tuning of language and dialogue.
The Mary Potterton Memorial concerts have been fully planned, with our roster of
gifted faculty and guests returning in the same order as last year. And we’re
pleased to announce that Ina Litera, viola, and Matt Goeke, cello, will join John
Newell, piano, for our opening concert. Also, we’re happy to repeat the two new
events from 2015: our alternately hilarious and heart-tugging Cabaret duo, Jennie
Litt and David Alpher, at the Lubec Grange Hall and the Celtic music evening in
which Andrea Hoag, fiddle, joins Sue Richards on Celtic harp, but in the traditional
Church Sanctuary location.
In response to student requests, both the Photography and Creative Writing
workshops are offering more advanced classes along with their regular regimen: of
the five photo sessions, the second and fourth will be “Master Classes” in
advanced techniques. There will be a new class in writing, aimed at students
wanting to complete an existing work, or simply to forge ahead from where they
stopped in last summer’s workshop.
On a grateful note: we received the donation of a beautiful large Yamaha grand, in
perfect condition, from a dear friend and former student of Bruce’s. This has been
placed in the former Pastor’s Study of the Congregational Christian Church
Parsonage (the same person also donated two large oil portraits: one of Chopin
and one of Wagner).
$50 REFER A FRIEND
On a peskier note: there will be a $200 fee charged for switching programs, or
weeks, on a completed registration.
NEW THIS YEAR: Get one of your friends to sign-up for a violin/viola program, and you’ll get $50
towards your tuition balance, once they pay their deposit and registration fee. Be sure to have
them make a note on their registration form, including your name.
On a sadder note: we bade goodbye to our beloved “Noni” MacBride (a great
friend and loyal supporter of SummerKeys) in a service delayed until the bulk of
her family could attend.
SCHOLARSHIPS
On a jubilant note: In the same sanctuary where so many of you responded to the
Congregational Christian Church’s generosity to us, with your own generous gifts
toward their needs, Pastor Lynne Josselyn convened a dedication of the new
steeple, put in place in August, which she emphatically declared was made more
possible by the SummerKeys Concert audiences, thanking us profusely.
The "Cora Buenconsejo Memorial Piano Scholarship" was donated by her mother; it covers one
week's tuition in Piano A, B or C for one student per summer.
The George Lelievre Memorial Scholarship Fund
A limited amount of tuition aid is now available for students in need.
How To Apply - Send a letter with your request and your signature (e-mails will not be considered)
to SummerKeys/Potterton, 32 North Main St., Boonton, NJ, 07005 before April 1st.
How To Donate - Remembering that your gift, while greatly appreciated, will not be tax-deductible,
address your check (with a "G.L. Scholarship Donation” notation on lower left) to SummerKeys
Music LLC, PO Box 481, Lubec, ME 04652.
In closing, I must tell you that I “spotted” (Thanks, Winslow!) Helga, the harbor seal
down by the marina, just before I left Lubec – and she asked me to send all of you
her loving regards, which I therefore do here (along with my own)!

LUBEC, MAINE
2016 Session
THE MUSIC
SummerKeys offers the busy adult an opportunity to be immersed in the study and practice of a
musical instrument. There are no admission requirements. The premise is: come as you are and
enjoy the study, the work, the camaraderie, and the beauty of the Maine Coast.
The program is open to all levels - from very beginning students to accomplished players. Courses
are offered in piano, voice, clarinet, jazz piano, classical guitar, flute, Baroque flute, recorder, cello,
violin, viola, fiddle, mandolin, trumpet, Celtic harp, oboe, organ, composition, “Instrumentarium”,
photography, creative writing, cabaret, and dance. Faculty members, adept in their disciplines and
experienced in teaching adults, tailor private sessions and classes to accommodate your musical
goals and interests. While both study and practice at SummerKeys are intensive, the atmosphere is
relaxed and noncompetitive. You work at your instrument in ways that are rewarding to you.
THE VACATION
“I’d like to ask if you have ever dreamed about a vacation playing the piano,
without any rules or somebody else setting expectations. All in the warm
company of others who share that dream, in a lovely town, with NO traffic lights-just waves and light houses and harbor seals.”
--M.H., from CO
COPIES OF BROCHURE at
www.summerkeys.com

Lubec is a lovely old fishing village that feels stepped back in time. In a setting of pristine beauty, on
a hill at the end of a peninsula jutting into the Bay of Fundy and abutting Campobello Island, it has
remained isolated from the frantic quality of modern life. The international boundary marker
between Maine and New Brunswick is located at the tip of the town breakwater, and you can walk
into Canada across the International Bridge. One comes away remembering gleaming church spires,
white clapboards with green shutters and fishing wharves. You’ll probably enjoy your five days at
SummerKeys most if you arrive in time for the orientation meeting at7:30 on Sunday night and
arrange to stay through Friday evening to try a bit of performance on your own, (strictly optional!)
or just to hear some of your new friends play.
Area attractions include Quoddy Head State Park and its famous West Quoddy Lighthouse (the
easternmost point of land in the US) and, on Campobello, the FDR Residence, the East Quoddy
Lighthouse, and a beautifully groomed 9-hole public golf course overlooking the sea. The great
Fundy tides rise and fall about 18 feet in the crystal-clear waters surrounding Lubec, where you can
see fish and watch harbor seals frolic at high tide. Eagles nest nearby at the Moosehorn National
Wildlife Refuge, and you can take boat trips from Machias to Machias Seal Island to watch puffins.
Whale watch cruises leave from Lubec as well as nearby Eastport and Campobello. Freshwater
swimming and fishing also abound. There are countless lakes and rivers within easy driving distance
and miles upon miles of spectacular hiking trails atop the cliffs by the sea. Area tours are available.

ACCOMMODATIONS
THE FACILITIES
SummerKeys occupies a cedar-shingled
structure built as Lubec’s Masonic Hall in 1826
and later moved to its present location,
overlooking Campobello Island and Johnson
Bay. We’ve also expanded into the house just
next door and just recently purchased a large
residence near the town center. Behind the
main buildings, a spacious double practicestudio overlooks the bay (as do several others).
Additionally, a few local residents and three
churches have generously opened their doors
for our use. All pianos are kept in top
condition, tuned to A440, and serviced weekly.
Located in private, sound-dampened rooms are
grands: two Steinways, two Baldwins, four
Yamahas (including a virtually new C7), a
Mason & Hamlin, a Chickering, a Hardman,
and uprights: four Yamaha professionals, a
Charles Walters, and a Steinway. The main
building houses what is probably the best
music library in Downeast Maine, including
both scores and books.
THE PROGRAM
PRIVATE LESSONS
Private lessons are the core component of the
SummerKeys experience. Our instructors are
carefully chosen not just for a wide overview in
their discipline, but also for their demonstrated
love of teaching and upbeat positive attitude
toward students. All of our faculty are active
performers and bring this invaluable practical
experience to their work. You may begin to
learn your instrument, receive advice on music
you bring, or ask an instructor to recommend
material from our library. You will come away
from these sessions energized with valuable
new insights and a desire to work even harder
on your return home.

PRACTICE TIME
Practice time ranges from two to three hours
daily, depending on the course of study you
select. Lessons and practice times are
scheduled so that you have free time to
explore the area.
GROUP CLASSES
The frequency of group classes is determined
by each instructor. Theory classes will be
offered during all weeks.
PERFORMANCE CLASSES (OPTIONAL)
Keenly aware of the motivational value of
preparing to play for others, yet equally aware
of the stress this creates for most of us,
SummerKeys provides two performance
venues. Each Friday evening, students can
choose to perform for each other and their
guests; two afternoon classes, “Perform for
Your Peers”, are student-organized (no faculty
allowed), and so relaxed and informal that
even the shyest among us may want to try
them.
COACHED ENSEMBLE OPTION
Coached Ensemble Option is offered all
weeks. The faculty will place enrollees in
groups as appropriate to each individual’s
ability as possible. Music will be assigned and
distributed on Monday evenings. Coaching
takes place Tuesdays through Fridays.
Beginners are encouraged to participate and
are as welcome as experienced players.

GETTING TO LUBEC
WHAT TO BRING
By car, Lubec is approximately 5 hours from
Portland, 7 hours from Boston, 11 hours from
New York City, and 15 hours from Washington,
D.C. Bangor is the nearest transportation hub. It
is serviced by several major airlines.
• Music that you wish to learn or continue
practicing.
• Clothing that will accommodate daytime
temperatures of 50 to 90 degrees. Evenings
are typically chilly, so bring a jacket or warm
sweater
THREE OPTIONS FOR TRAVELING FROM
BANGOR TO LUBEC:
1. You may reserve a car at the airport. All major
1-800 car rental agencies have facilities at the
Bangor airport.
• Some sort of notebook.
• Guitar, wind, and string students must
bring an instrument and a portable music
stand.
2. The West Transportation Co. bus leaves the
Bangor airport once daily at 3:15 P.M., stopping
beforehand at the Concord Trailways station at
3:10 P.M. The bus makes a stop in Whiting, 12
miles from Lubec, where we’ll meet you by
prearrangement. The return trip leaves once daily
from Whiting at 10:20 A.M. Bus trips are
approximately two hours.
STRING INSTRUMENT RENTAL

DIRECTIONS: BANGOR TO LUBEC
Turn right from main airport exit. This road
becomes Rt. 1A (or from Rt. 95 take Rt. 395 to
Rt. 1A east). Follow Rt. 1A to the junction of Rt.
1 at Ellsworth. Bear left through town to avoid Rt.
3. Follow Rt. 1 North (left out of Ellsworth) to Rt.
189, which ends in Lubec. Total driving time is
2½ hours. If you are planning dinner while
traveling, be sure to eat before 7 P.M. because
downeast restaurants begin to close at this time.
When planning air travel, you may wish to
consider Portland as your destination; even
though it’s three hours further away than Bangor,
there is a convenient bus there to Bangor, and the
flights are more frequent and less expensive.

Gene Nichols might aptly be called the Music Man of Washington County, Maine; as a
matter of fact, he played that role twice when the Meredith Willson musical was
presented here. Professor and head of the Music Department at U. Maine, Machias, his
deep love of music has led him to explore even its offbeat nooks and crannies. His
original training is in low brass, but whatever you bring--hubcaps, saw, ukulele,
bulbhorns, something unique--he will help you play it better. Music making as creative
fun using general improvisation techniques (not specifically related to classical or jazz)
will be explored.

Cabaret is an intimate musical art form, in which a performer puts his or her personal stamp on a song
through honest exploration of the lyric. Students do not need to know how to read music, nor do they
need to have taken voice lessons or studied acting. That said, professionals from other theatrical and
musical genres who are interested in exploring the unique art form of cabaret are welcome!
