W Heights Hip Factor
W Hotels is burnishing its image as the hotel industry's arbiter of hip with recent marketing initiatives that
include a branding campaign, lifestyle events and a fashion partnership. Recent additions to the W culture
experience include:
•
•
The Warmth of Cool branding campaign is the umbrella
positioning statement for the company's marketing programs,
playing on guests' heightened sense of aspiration. It aims to
showcase the brand's ability to be "fashionable but friendly, hip
but welcoming, designdriven but comfortable." Collateral from
the campaign pulls the guest in with a series of playful invites.
Examples include, for door hangers, "When? Not quite yet." And
for pencils, "Whatcha thinking? Write it down."
W Happenings, the brand's signature series of lifestyle events
include everything from film screenings and wine tastings to art
previews and celebrity book readings that take place in the
hotels.
DJ CHEF serves up his signature
eats & beats on his W Hotel tour
in NY, LA & Chicago.
Recent W Happenings have included performances by Moby and
the Wallflowers, DJ CHEF (fun cooking demonstration/cocktail
party) and An Evening of Luxury (private photos of Jackie
Onassis).
•
A partnership this fall between W Hotels Worldwide and style icon Diane von Furstenberg,
including the creation of exclusive DVF beauty and fashion " emergency kits" for W guestrooms
and retail stores. The "emergency survival kit" features a boxed set of mini lip glosses, mascara
and perfume from von Furstenberg's signature cosmetics line. The "emergency fashion kit" will
feature DVF's classic black wrap dress with matching thong, packaged in a customized garment
bag.
The new programs and branding message will be promoted through advertising, direct mail and e-mail
messages.
"We don't think of ourselves as a hotel, but as a place," says Ross Klein, senior vice president and chief
marketing officer for W Hotels Worldwide. "We're a place you can experience warmth and cool. Our point of
difference from some others in the market is that they are sort of 'cool and cruel,' or 'warm and wimpy.' The
Warmth of Cool expands through all our departments, including operations, planning, real estate group and
marketing. It's warm, meaning we will embrace you and be comforting and give you a terrific service product
and welcome you as a family member and create a home for you. But it's also cool because we're flirty,
we're insider, we're an escape, we have leading design, we have happening things that are exclusive to W
that create a sense of discovery or rediscovery for our guests."
"We try to be trend-right and trend-sensitive but not trend-y," adds Klein. "I'm very concerned that what we
do is on trend, that reflects pop culture, but we don't want to be so trendy that it's intimidating or we date
ourselves. We spend a lot of time determining and implementing what's next in technology, in home design,
in guest/consumer products, encompassing wellness, music and fashion. We want to be the lifestyle
authority on those areas."

OFFICIAL PAPER OF THE HAMPTONS
“Usher’s Committed”
It’s the event women across the tri-state area have been dreaming about for months, Super
Saturday, the ultimate high-end designer garage sale. Donna Karan, Charla Lawhon, In
Style and Kelly Ripa hosted this years 8th annual Super Saturday, benefiting the Ovarian
Cancer Research Fund.
Even the man who invented the phrase, “Shopping for a good cause,” former Mayor
Rudolph Giuliani and wife Judith Nathan couldn’t resist the upscale bargains. Other celebrity shopaholics included Cathy
Moriarty, Christy Turlington, Petra Nemcova, Ines Rivero,
Nicole Miller, TLC’s T-Boz just to name a few. Even Howard
Stern showed up with his sweetheart, Beth Ostrosky. When I
asked Howard why he came out to support the cause he
motioned to Beth and laughed, “I do whatever she tells me.”
There’s no real evidence yet, to the reports that Usher’s girlfriend, model
Eishia Brightwell, is three months pregnant with his child, but it’s apparent
Usher loves kids. This past Saturday evening at the 6th annual Art For Life
Benefit, Usher attended the event for the first time ever with Eishia by his side.
I managed to lure the superstar away from Eishia for a few minutes, by telling him we just happen to share
the same birthday, October 14th.
The mega star, whose original dance moves have been compared to Michael
Jackson, revealed to me why he decided to attend AFL, “Anytime someone who
is blessed makes an act that is from the heart as a philanthropist I want to be
supportive. I really do respect the cause. Usher admitted he is interested in expanding his organization
for children with the help of Russell Simmons and his Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation.
Russell and Kimora Lee Simmons would be the
perfect partners when it comes to raising money for
kids. The couple has hosted the AFL benefit at their
East Hampton estate since 2000 and this year raised
more than $1.3 million to benefit art education in NYC
Meanwhile in East Hampton, EECO Farm’s Blue Moon Ball Barbecue cochaired by Christie Brinkley & B. Smith featured several celebrity chefs’
cuisine including DJ CHEF Marc Weiss who was cookin’ up his specialty, eats
and beats just before performing late night for the first time at Star Room, where
he literally got the entire club up and moving.
How can you get invited to one of the hottest celeb filled after parties on the East

DJ CHEF prepares the “Paris Pink Drink”
UBM Magazine DJ Chef and Paris Hilton get creative at her fragrance
release party (Duvet, NYC), and best of all we got the mix recipe…
Ingredients
1 part Stoli Vanil
1 part Stoli Strasberi
15oz can of peaches
½ part vanilla syrup
Rose champagne
Splash of grenadine
Preparation
Pour the canned peaches into the blender and hit puree. This should take about
10 seconds.
Take a jigger, a handy little measuring device, and fill it with 1 ¼ oz Stoli Vanil.
Pour it into the shaker, then do the same with 1 ¼ oz Stoli Strasberi.
TIP: If you don't have a jigger gadget, remember the top part of your shaker is
perfect to use. Measured as 2 oz.
½ part of vanilla syrup or a three count.
Add ½ oz of peach puree, then some ice to chill and shake for about 5 seconds.
Pour mixture into a flute glass, but fill only halfway. For the other half, add the
rose champagne, and that's where you get your pinkness. You can always add a
splash of grenadine for extra color.
