Corsica is a French island, the fourth largest island (after Sicily, Sardinia, and Cyprus) in the
Mediterranean Sea. It is located west of Italy, southeast of the French mainland, and north of the
Italian island of Sardinia. Corsica is split into two departments, Haute-Corse and Corse-du-Sud,
with its regional capital in Ajaccio, the prefecture of Corse-du-Sud. Bastia, the prefecture of
Haute-Corse, is the second-largest settlement in Corsica.
Although Corsica is still commonly described as one of 22 régions of metropolitan France, its
official status was changed in 1991 from région to collectivité territoriale à statut particulier
(“territorial collectivity with special status”). The unique classification provides Corsica greater
autonomy than the other régions.
Tourism plays a big part in the Corsican economy. The island's warm climate and diverse
topography make it a very popular destination among tourists.
There are four airports on the island: Ajaccio, Bastia, Calvi and Figari.
