NOVEMBER 24, 2013
Dreamers, Thinkers, Innovators and Adventurers –
Today. The first day of the rest of your life. Are you ready for a departure
from the ordinary? Are you willing to push beyond the boundary of your
comfort zone and explore the limitless universe of possibilities? Are you
open to meet new people, explore innovative ideas and dream big? Then
this is the place for you!
TEDxYouth@SanDiego is where minds open, creativity flourishes and
hearts expand. It’s where your imaginings and ideas are infinite and your
dreams take flight. Be open to all the day has to offer and be willing to
see yourself and your world anew. Take it all in. Be fully engaged and
present. And know that the magic happens in the most unexpected
moments and in those unplanned interactions.
So today, UNLEASH your Passion and UNFOLD your dreams. Trust that
you are UNSTOPPABLE. Radiate a kind of acceptance, love and joy that is
UNCONDITIONAL.
And remember that YOU ARE UNLIMITED!
To the power of ideas!
The Team TEDxYouth@SanDiego
“All it takes is imagination.
You dream. You plan. You reach.
There will be obstacles.
There will be doubters.
There will be mistakes.
But with hard work, with belief,
with confidence and trust in
yourself and those around you,
THERE ARE NO LIMITS.”

GRANT KORGAN
A nanoscientist and professional athlete, Grant Korgan has never
shied away from a challenge. After breaking his back in an extreme
snowmobiling injury, Grant began an extraordinary journey of recovery,
the first year of which inspired his book, Two Feet Back. Through hard
work, positivity and love, Grant has regained the ability to walk with
two canes. On January 17, 2012 he became the first person with a
spinal cord injury to push himself the final degree of latitude (80 miles)
to the geographical South Pole – providing a powerful metaphor –
that regardless of ability or perceived disability, we can all come to
the awareness that we can achieve our limitless potential. Fueled by
a lifelong desire to make a positive impact on the world, Grant now
shares his story and inspiring words of empowerment and unflagging
positivity with audiences around the country.
I WANT TO REMEMBER: / I WANT TO DO:
“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to
live the world they have been given, rather than to explore the power they have to
change it. Impossible is not a fact. It is an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration.
It is a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

CANYON CREST ACADEMY UNLIMITED PERFORMERS
In collaboration with Envision, The Arts at Canyon Crest Academy, the opening performance entitled
“Unlimited,” is a composition that represents the development of an idea. Starting from an elemental
theme and the simplicity of four notes, four shapes or four dance moves, the piece develops slowly,
adding more instruments, voices, melodies, harmonies, shapes, curves, steps, movements and overall
force. This idea is taken to its harmonic and emotional extremes, developing throughout and gaining
momentum. The piece ends with a sonic climax, representing the true development of an idea over its
journey. Throughout the performance, the simplicity and beauty of the original four notes, shapes and
moves develop, change, deepen and transform.
JACK ANDRAKA
At age 15, Jack created a novel paper sensor that detects pancreatic,
ovarian, and lung cancer in 5 minutes — for as little as 3 cents. He
conducted his research at Johns Hopkins University and his groundbreaking
work led to recognition as the winner of the Gordon E. Moore award
at Intel International Science and Engineering Fair and the Smithsonian
American Ingenuity Award. President Obama named him a Champion of
Change for his work to break down scientific journal paywalls, and he was
Mrs. Obama’s guest at the State of the Union Address.
Jack is currently in high school in Maryland and he’s working with a team
of teens (Gen Z) on the Qualcomm Foundation Tricorder X Prize. He is
an internationally acclaimed speaker, traveling all over the world sharing
his thoughts about open access, STEM education and universal Internet
availability. He is also on the national junior wildwater kayaking team.
As a whole, the piece represents more than an artistic theme developing and evolving: it signifies the
exponential nature of imagination and ideas and the extraordinary power of basic, simple elements
to spark limitless creativity. In the pursuit of any dream, idea, goal or aspiration, something unique is
created through discovery and experimentation. If we believe that we are not limited by our resources,
ideas, or possibilities, then we are truly UNLIMITED.

Dance Composition: Rayna Stohl and Envision Dance Conservatory
I THINK: / I CARE:
Envision encompasses all of the Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) courses offered at Canyon Crest
Academy and is a unique program that enfolds working artists as instructors. These professional
artists work side by side with our VPA teachers to deliver an outstanding arts experience. Envision
Conservatory curriculum includes Humanities, Cinema, Dance, Digital/Fine Arts, Theater and
Instrumental and Vocal Music, with emphasis on collaborative works and the integration of industry
standard technology.
MATTHEW EMERZIAN
Upon graduating from the Anderson School of Management at UCLA with
his MBA, Matthew Emerzian became a prominent SVP of a major music
marketing company, working with the biggest artists in the world. He was
“on the top of the heap” as they say, but felt like he was at the bottom
of the world. He was empty. Realizing he spent his career focused on
everything that didn’t matter... fame and fortune... he set out to change
it by creating a life focused on making the world a better place. This
new purpose not only transformed his life, but it became the inspiration
for his book, Every Monday Matters – 52 Ways to Make a Difference.
Based on the idea that “people matter,” today, Every Monday Matters
is an organization that is changing the face of Mondays, transforming
hundreds-of-thousands of lives, and positively impacting the world...
one Monday at a time.

SATCHIN PANDA, Ph.D.
Tuning circadian clock to healthy life
A scientist at the Salk Institute, Satchin Panda studies how biological
clocks or circadian rhythms tune physiology, metabolism and brain
function. Dr. Panda’s research has shown thousands of genes in every
cell from neuron to hair follicle turn on and off at specific times of the
day. This gene orchestra dictates the optimum times for everything
from athletic performance, shaving, taking any medicine to cramming
for an exam. His research has found flipping a light switch or taking a
snack bite at a certain time can reset the circadian clock. This discovery
points to new lifestyle changes that can potentially improve health and
prevent chronic diseases by changing a light bulb or timing breakfast
and dinner.

of the mind to imprison or liberate regardless of conditions. These
discoveries have informed her unique approach to presence and creativity
work with global and business leaders. Her 20 years of work on stage
has earned her numerous awards and honors including the 2011 Eliot

folk, classical and rock to emphasize Shane’s powerful words. They
have released two albums. The most recent album includes the viral
hit “To This Day,” which explores the anguish of anyone who grew
up feeling different or just a little bit alone. To bring visual life to this
image-rich poem, Shane invited artists from around the world to
contribute 20-second segments of animation to the project. Posted

“One of the most amazing things that can happen is finding someone who sees everything
you are and won’t let you be anything less. They see the potential of you. They see endless
possibilities, and through their eyes, you start to see yourself the same way. As someone
who matters. As someone who can make a difference in the world.”

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps are synonymous with Old-World quality and time-honored
simplicity, which can be traced back to the family’s German-Jewish soapmaking
tradition. Born in 1908 to a Jewish family that had been making soap since 1858,
Emanuel Bronner was the third generation certified as a master-soapmaker under the
guild system of the time. In 1929, he brought his formulas for high-quality liquid and
bar soaps to America, starting Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps in its current form in 1948.
