Doug Formanek, General Manager
One of the issues continues to be the need for more
50 amp power. We did do some changes for this the
past two years and will continue to add more each year
if possible. Before leaving to attend rallies in August, a
group of us took another good look at our rally grounds.
We are looking at what changes we can make this fall
or next spring to make areas more user friendly. We will
be doing more changes to the grounds but it can’t all be
done at one time. We will continue to do what we can but
it takes time and money to do this.
Pat and I are back on the road and hitting numerous
rallies and making dealer visits when possible. We have
had some very good stops at dealers as well as some
fun experiences. We were traveling in Quebec Canada
heading toward our dealer by Quebec City. Being warm
we were wearing shorts and t-shirts and thought we best
get our clothes changed before we visited our dealer.
As we approached the city we thought we could change
at the rest stop near by. As we pulled our vehicle in
and parked we noticed that the building was closed for
repairs. Other cars were driving in and found the same
issue. What do we do now? We really needed to get
changed as our exit was right in front of us. It’s amazing
what you can come up with for a solution. You can use
your imagination on how we got changed. Just goes to
show that you can’t take anything for granted and if you
have a desire to do something you can. We sure would
have liked to have had our motor home there at that time
as it sure would have resolved our problem.
We have been traveling around the New England
states visiting dealers and attending rallies. It has been
beautiful weather as well as the scenery. Pat has noticed
that there are many moose warning signs. She is getting
very disappointed as she hasn’t seen any as of yet.
Traveling in the midwest we have many deer warning
signs and you do see them. Seeing a moose would have
been a real treat.
Thanks for your feedback
We did get about 25% of those who attended the Grand
National Rally to fill out their evaluation sheets. We do
take them very seriously and want to improve each year.
We did have some other comments from the evaluation
sheets that we are going to try to get resolved. We were
pleased to have numerous positive comments on what
we were doing for the rally. These comments are used
for planning next years rally. Thanks to all that sent or
turned them in.
As I mentioned we are attending rallies in many states
this fall. We are very excited to be driving our new Itasca
Ellipse 42GD. What a nice unit to drive and it is very
livable. I hope that those of you who attended the Grand
National Rally got to see the new models on display. I
think this product line is the best I have seen. One thing
we like is the bold name identification on the front of the
units. You know it’s an Itasca or Winnebago unit when
you meet one.
Promoting WIT and WIT Tours
We are very happy with the response that we have
received from the WIT Tours changes. The change was
allowing other brands to participate in the tours and
caravans if accompanied by a WIT member. The reaction
has been very good. We hope that if you have a friend
that has wanted to travel with you on a tour or caravan
bring them along. We are the best deal out there.
We have made the decision to attend some of the RV
shows across the country. We will have a Winnebago
Industries gazebo to promote the WIT Club as well as
WIT Tours. We were at the Hershey, PA. show, and will
be attending the Pomona show in California as well as
the Daytona, and Tampa, FL shows. We hope that you
will stop by and visit if you are in the area.

Denise Yeager, Club News Editor
OK, what happened to September? I can’t believe the summer is officially over and we’re
heading straight into the holiday
season! We’ve been catching up
ever since GNR and to be honest, I feel a little like my fourlegged friend, Jack from Kansas.
Happy, but a bit exhausted!
In preparing to write my column, sometimes I reread what
I had written for previous issues just to make sure I’m not
repeating myself! The other day I was rereading a column
and seriously felt like the nerd character at the end of “The
Breakfast Club” and practically punched myself in the arm
for a job well done on my essay like he did in the film. At
that same moment, my eyes slid across to the next page
and I saw a major misspelling! Ah, that’s the reality check I
needed - there is NEVER a perfect column nor perfect layout and there is ALWAYS room for improvement. As much
as I try, I know there are always ways we can improve your
club magazine and how we communicate with you.
That said, please know we have some new things planned
for this publication as well as how we communicate in other
ways with you. We’ll continue to share news updates on
our www.witclub.com and send e-mail to all members who
want to receive e-mail updates from us. If you have changed
your e-mail address or haven’t shared that with Ruth, please
make sure we have it on file so we can keep in touch more
often.
This October/November issue is our WIT Tours special
edition where we feature details for all 21 trips planned for
2013. I hope you’ll take a look through the back 1/3 of this
publication and dream a little about an excursion with WIT
Tours next year. Then, call Pam or Denise D. and make that
dream a reality! Find our 2013 WIT Tours section starting on
Page 41.
This issue is also our LAST for 2012. The next issue you’ll
receive will now be the January/February 2013 edition. So
the next print due date is December 1. I’ll insert a big plea to
all secretaries and rally masters here: PLEASE send your
2013 outing schedules and state and regional rally information to [email protected] by December 1 so
we can kick off the new year with all the details your fellow members need to plan another fun year of WIT Club
involvement! Thanks for all who have already started promoting their events - we’ll share the schedule and details via
e-mail monthly so keep us updated on changes!
Until 2013...

Well—it’s Labor Day—and I am
literally “laboring” over what to write!
Not that there aren’t enough things
to write about—but how to get started and cover it all. Sometimes one
page and 705 words isn’t enough—
but no worries, one page and 705
words is all there is!
Since leaving Camp Freightliner
after GNR, we’ve traveled 2600
miles—and every day has been
busy. Our first stop was the Indiana State Rally in Bremen, located
in north-central Indiana and in the
middle of Amish country. The highlight of the rally was the tour of the
Winnebago Towables plant in Middlebury that had been arranged for
our group. Everyone enjoyed the informative tour and seeing first-hand
the production of the towables line.
There was plenty to see and do in
the area—there was a large arts and
crafts fair nearby that weekend, in
addition to all the shops—and the
cheese factory! Mix all that up with
good friends and a good time—you
just can’t beat it!
Back on the road again, dealer
visits in Indiana, Michigan, Massachusetts, New York, and New Hampshire kept us busy en route to the
next rally. And yes, while in Michigan, we did sneak in a couple days
6
for hugs and kisses from 6 of our 9
grandchildren.
New Hampshire was the host
state this year for the Northern New
England Rally, which was held in
North Haverhill, a little more than
halfway up the western border of
the state and nestled in a broad valley along the Connecticut River. It
was fun-filled “Hillbilly Hoedown”
weekend complete with a beer and
cheese social (as opposed to wine
and cheese), a 2-pig roast, yard
sales, and entertainment by the Red
Hat Band (think guys with red hillbilly
hats—not the dignified ladies with
red hats and purple dresses!) and
equally good entertainment during
the open mike session. Oh—and by
the way—no moose sighting again
this year on the way to the rally!
They just don’t read the signs where
they’re supposed to be crossing the
road!
It is always fun to attend the rallies
and watch everyone come together—greeting old friends again and
making new ones—it’s what WIT is
all about. And yet, at the same time,
we have had several club/chapter
officers come up to us and tell us
that they can’t get officers and/or
are thinking of dissolving because of
non-participation. So get ready-----
WIT Club News
--here comes the philosophical part
of the article!
We are all faced with a spectrum
of choices in our lives—from which
shirt to put on in the morning to who
we’re going to vote for in the presidential election (won’t we be glad
to see an end to all those political
commercials!) Could we add WIT
into the list of choices? Maybe the
shirt choice doesn’t affect our lives
so much, but WIT does—and I’m not
touching the presidential choice!!
Choosing to take an office or being
involved ensures not only that the
“good of the club” prevails—it also
is a great way to really get to know
your fellow WIT members through
direct contact. Even if you’ve done it
before—do it again—step up to the
plate—get involved—have fun—and
keep your club/chapter alive! The
“ladder of success” in keeping your
club or chapter a successful one
cannot be climbed with your hands in
your pockets; as M.K. Ghandi said,
“we must be the change we wish to
see.” So let’s do it folks—no “R.I.P.”
after your club/chapter’s name!
This fall we will be doing something new—working the Hershey RV
show and the Good Sam Rally in
Daytona in a booth set up by Winnebago for WIT and WIT Tours. We
hope to meet lots of people there
and encourage them to participate
in both WIT and the WIT Tours rallies and caravans. We’ll also be at
the Tampa SuperShow in January--if
you’re in the area, be sure to stop by.
We’re excited about sharing our enthusiasm for both of these programs
with as many as we can. We’ll keep
you posted!
In the meantime – if you see us
on the road—be sure to wave!

It’s been just over a month since
we left Forest City after moving into
the new coach. What a beautiful and
comfortable home it is!! From Forest
City we headed westward to Colorado for their state rally. Andy put
some of the driving skills he learned
at Camp Freightliner to use as we
climbed to the 9,000 ft. summit where
the campground overlooks Central
City. Steep climbs and hairpin turns,
but we made it and it was worth the
trip. What a beautiful sight!! We had
a wonderful weekend there with the
Mile High State club and WIT members representing six other states.
Lots of fun activities, great entertainment by the Colorado Columbines
and even an appearance by Elvis
who included members of the audience in his show, including a dance
performance by Andy that some of
you might have caught on Facebook
made for a weekend we won’t soon
forget!!
From Colorado we headed south
to Albuquerque for dealer visits, then
on to Amarillo where we had hoped
to get the Tex Pan chapter up and
going again. Unfortunately enough
couples were not able to attend the
meeting that weekend, but those
who did have plans to meet again
in the spring and hopefully get a few
more involved to get the chapter reorganized and active again.
From Amarillo we headed for the
northwest. Back up through Colorado on our way across to get to Polson, MT for the Labor Day weekend.
We were lucky enough to spend time
with our youngest daughter and her
family in Casper, WY, as it was on
our way up. (So glad they chose
Casper to move to since it is right in
the middle of our western territory
and sometimes on the way to our
destinations).
We had a wonderful Labor Day
weekend, attending a joint meeting
of the Montana Wilderness and Alberta Wild Rose chapters, hosted by
Montana at beautiful Flathead Lake
KOA in Polson, where they also celebrated their 30th birthday with their
Canadian friends. Our hosts made
us, and the Alberta group, feel so
welcome. From delicious meals to
a rousing mini golf tournament, the
weekend held lots of activities and
also allowed time to explore the
beautiful Flathead Lake area (see
our photo below). The Alberta group
helped with meals and even brought
a cake and gifts for their Montana
friends to help celebrate their birthday. These two groups have met
together each year for Labor Day
for several years and have already
put next year’s outing, hosted by
October/November 2012
Alberta, on their calendar. Thanks
Montana and Alberta for welcoming
us with open arms and allowing us
to share in the birthday celebration
and a great get-together. We look
forward to visiting again!!
Well, August was fairly quiet, but
as we finish this weekend we are
headed for the Washington state
rally and the western circuit of rallies which has us doing 5 rallies in
6 weeks as we finish off our year,
with dealer visits in between, then
we head home for the holidays and
some family time!! It’ll be a busy
couple of months! We look forward
to seeing our friends on the west
coast again and know there will be
lots of fun things to see and do and
lots of good times with good friends!!
If you’re out west we hope you’ll join
us!! We know you’ll have a great
time also!
Meanwhile, we hope all of you
are enjoying the end of the summer and your outings together. We
have received many of your newsletters, some of which included plans
for 2013. Don’t forget to send your
schedule to Denise Yeager so she
can get them on the WIT Club site
and in the next issue of the WIT Club
News for those people who are making plans for the upcoming year!!
Also be sure to send the dates and
places of your next year’s rally so
they can be posted and write-ups
for the magazine as you have them.
Next year’s Club/Chapter of Excellence will be online soon. There are
no major changes from the last year,
but we would remind you that both
state and chapter forms specify that
your newsletters should be sent to us
when you send them to your membership (thanks to those who have
already added us to your e-mail list)
and don’t forget to send new rosters
and officer’s lists to us as well as the
WIT office also.
So for now, until next time!! We
hope to see you down the road!!
Keep an eye out for us!!! Until we
then, Happy Trails & Safe Travels!!

Cardinal Winnies of Ohio celebrate their 40th Anniversary
By Lynda Williams
On the banks of the beautiful Ohio River the Cardinal
Winnies gathered in August to celebrate their 40th birthday at Lively Lady Campground in Aberdeen, OH. The
weather was great, and many of us enjoyed socializing,
and sitting by the river watching the barges and pleasure
boats go by. Some people brought their pictures from
years past, and we enjoyed reminiscing together. Our
attendance varies from month to month at camp outs
and luncheons, but we make a special effort to come
together to celebrate our anniversary each August. This
year we really missed some very active members who
have health issues and were unable to attend. We sure
hope they are back with us soon. We still had a good
turnout on Saturday with thirty one members enjoying a
pot luck meal along with birthday cake and home made
ice cream. After dinner we all gathered for our anniversary picture behind our new “birthday celebration banner”.
We hope we will be flying it for many years to come.
Dottie Johnson, our only charter member is still very
active. She says she can’t explain how happy she is that
she was involved in starting the Cardinal Winnies. In
1972 five couples got together to organize a club. When
it came to selecting a name, it was decided to name it
after the state bird of Ohio. It was a good choice; we
have the cardinal on our shirts, patches, letterhead, and
when new members join us, they are “given the bird.” All
members have “flying Cardinals” perched in front of their
coaches at each campout and rally. When Ron and Mary
Jane Sterrett joined the Cardinal Winnies in 1994, the
honor of making the birds was passed on to them. Ron
says he has made around 55 birds since then. As members retire from the club, their bird is also retired, flies
back to the club, and is often refurbished to fly again.
As we looked back on the past, we also look forward
to the future together. Dottie pretty much summed it up
when she said “It’s been 40 years of good times and
good friends.”

ALABAMA
North Alabama/Travelin’ Warriors
Local Chapter
On a very warm August Saturday, sixteen members of
the North AL Travelin’ Warriors met at the Freight House
Restaurant in Hartselle, AL for a time of fellowship, food,
and our monthly meeting.
We were very pleased to welcome two of our newest
members, Byron and Barbara Lewis from Clanton, AL,
to our group. It was also good to have Jim and Vivian
Hopple back with us after several months of traveling,
not only out of the state, but out of the country as well.
As always, it was good to catch up with what’s been
going on during the summer with everyone and to make
plans for our next outing. During our meeting, our vice
president, Tom Mosteter, gave an excellent report about
the GNR and presented the group with our Chapter of
Excellence award which was presented there. We would
all still rather have the individual pins, but it was nice
to be recognized for our achievement. Also during our
meeting, we were proud to present an Honorary Member
Certificate to one of our Charter Members, Roy Cook.
Roy recently sold his motor home and plans to continue
his retirement on the Gulf Coast. Roy has been a very
active and valuable member of NATW, serving as an officer many times and his contributions over the years are
too numerous to catalog. We will miss him greatly. He is
already scouting the Gulf Coast area for campgrounds
so we can all come and visit.
As usual, the food and service at the Freight House
were great and we very much appreciate their setting
aside a room for our use. It provided us an area where
we could socialize, both before and after the meal and
meeting, and we thank them very much.
We said our goodbyes and left looking forward to
our September get-together at Roaring Pines and our
Friendship Rally
ARIZONA
Grand Canyon Winnies
State Club
By John Mollerus
As usual the AZ summer arrived very hot, which resulted in many Grand Canyon Winnie (GCW) members
departing for cooler climates. With members on the road,
no events were held during the summer.
Some AZ members went to 2012 GNR in Forest City,
IA. AZ had sixteen rigs attending of which ten are members of the State Club and/or one of its Chapters. For
Tuesday night’s GNR state row party, AZ had a stand
with our traditional margaritas and goldfish. For some
reason, this proved to be a popular combination with the
margaritas quickly disappearing.
Our traditional Monday evening dinner was moved to
Wednesday and held at Shooterz Bar and Grill. Fortyeight people attended including four couples from NV’s
club and one couple from OR. We invited them to join us.
Shooterz set up a great buffet for us, but also allowed us
to order off of their menu at very reasonable prices.
AZ member Harriet Griffing was one of the three winners of the GNR treasure hunt—she won free admittance to 2013 GNR.
As we head into this fall, our club and its chapters pick
up their activity in preparation for AZ’s 2012 State Rally.
This year’s theme is Celebrate Arizona’s 100th Birthday,
which AZ officially celebrated on Feb. 14.
Also in early planning stages is the 2013 Southwest
Regional Rally. It will be held Apr. 10-14 in Pahrump, NV
at NV Treasurer RV Park. AZ is the host club/state for
this rally.
ARKANSAS
Ark-A-Bago
State Club
Seven coaches arrived at the Ozark Country Campground on Sunday, Aug. 5, with two more on Monday.
This is such a popular place for grandchildren that some
of us had them with us. While the Zwiegels were with
us, we checked out campgrounds and discussed dates
for a possible combined Oklahoma/Arkansas campout
in 2014. Later in the week, other Ark-A-Bago members
also visited the Compton Ridge Campground as a possible site. The welcoming dinner was provided by the
Booths with side dishes by the club members. With temperatures pushing 100°, most of the activities and meals

were planned to be inside with air conditioning. However, the guys did play some washer toss in the pavilion.
On Tuesday we traveled to the College of the Ozarks
for lunch and touring. This college, also known as the
‘Hard Work University,’ charges no tuition from the students but does require them to do 15 hours of work each
week. Therefore, the waitstaff and others were all cheerful, young people and it was a pleasure dealing with
them. The ambiance was delightful and the food well
prepared and served. Seven of us are planning to return
there for Thanksgiving dinner.
After lunch we toured the Edwards Mill to view early
methods of grinding corn and watch students working
on a loom and basket weaving. We then went on to the
Foster Museum with its fine collections of housewares
and collectibles, music, Ozark memorabilia, guns, and
natural history.
Wednesday we had lunch at MacFarland’s in the
IMAX center. We all watched as the table where the
Booths, Zwiegels, and Betty Bolte were sitting slowly
rose until Donna’s chin was nearly on the table! In the
afternoon most were exploring around the Branson and
Old Branson shops and malls. The evening meal was
provided by all as we enjoyed several kinds of salad.
The ‘pièce de résistance’ was a cake in a mug which
was a new experience for most of us. Evening activities
included various games, and the introduction of the Giant Jenga Tower. Working together we managed to raise
the tower to 27 levels, which is astonishing since this
was the club’s first attempt; and the 27 levels are also a
new record for the Booths, their previous one being 24.
Thursday morning the Bagos traveled to Grand
Country Buffet for the club’s traditional breakfast feast.
A special treat was watching Gene at the breakfast table
getting his right palm peed on by a ‘baby cub bear’! Talk
with him for all the ‘juicy’ details on how this happened!
Thereafter, some of the boys traveled to Springfield to
shop while the girls went to the quilt store. In the afternoon we played table games and tied a quilt that was
given to Benda by her aunt. Some Bagos went out to eat
at the Hard Luck Dinner while the rest stayed in and hit
the leftovers. Following dinner we did not want to waste
a wonderful clear evening, so off to the pool we went for
our delayed pool party. And party we did with two heavy
water guns and a gusher cannon! We couldn’t stop
laughing at each other! And the final event was conducting the 50/50 draw, with Betty, Ernie, and Gloria taking
first, second, and third place money and $25 going into
the club’s treasury!!!

Chardonnay Travelers
Local Chapter
By Susan Winn
On Aug. 16-19, the Chardonnay Travelers club gathered in beautiful Bodega Bay, located along the CA coast
north of San Francisco. Our group stayed at Bodega Bay
RV Park, which has full hookups, a clubhouse, and a
restaurant at the entrance. Waterside options are Porto
Bodega RV and Marina in the harbor or dry camping at
regional and state parks.
There are several access routes into this area on
good two-lane roads from the Hwy. 101 corridor between
Santa Rosa and Petaluma. Activities available include
fishing/whale-watching trips, kayaking, swimming, and
biking. A trip along the bay on Bodega Head Road is a
“must” with scenic vistas and whale sightings from the
top of the headland. There are several nice restaurants
and small grocery/delis in the area, but it’s a good idea
to stock up on groceries before you go.
A highlight of our outing was a guided tour through the
Bodega Marine Laboratory, which was very interesting.
Our group also enjoyed a dinner at the Brisas del Mar
Restaurant at the park entrance. Our hosts put on a linguine with clam sauce pasta feed with members bringing
the side dishes. A hilarious “White Elephant” auction that
profited the club treasury finished out the evening.
It was another successful outing of good times, good
food, and even some coastal fog to cool us off from an
inland heat wave. Mix in lots of laughter and fellowship
with good friends and you have a picture of our Chardonnay outings.
Our next event will be Nov. 1-4 at The Almond Tree
RV Park in Chico. Come and join us!! You can check our
website at www.chardonnaytravelers.com for a schedule
of upcoming events and photos from our monthly outings.

theme—”Blue Hawaii.” No one knew that the Columbines were so talented!?!
Saturday morning got underway with the Columbines providing a plentiful breakfast for all.
A SkyMed talk was followed by a good seminar
about computer/genealogy, conducted by our
own Ray Bowman. A lunch of kalua pork, rice,
salad, and pineapple was served by the Rampart
Rangers.
During the day, folks spent time viewing the
many new Itasca coaches brought up by Transwest, attending the Pampered Chef talk, and
just catching up with old and new friends.
The wine happy hour by the Aspen Leaf Winnies and catered dinner was followed by a crowdpleasing performance by Elvis himself. He made
a move on a number of the “fairer sex,” but they
all went home with who brought them.
Sunday after church service and a catered
breakfast, the Columbines’ own Diane Klibbe was
unanimously elected as the new State President.
The KOA, Transwest, and President Ray Lafflam
made for a great weekend of fun and fellowship.
The event was held at Denver West KOA. If
you travel through CO, this would be a great place
to stop. The hosts were very helpful and eager
to fulfill our every wish. There were 84 attendees
and all were served! One night the temperatures
dipped to 45° and the KOA made sure that any
people camping in a tent had electric heat which
the KOA provided! How can one beat that?
On Aug. 8, 2012, six coaches caravanned from the Quad
Cities area to Shabbona Lake State Park, about 50 miles east
of Sterling/Rock Falls, IL on Route 30.
Wednesday evening was potluck night with barbecue provided and everyone brought a dish to pass. On Thursday we
all carpooled to the Northern Illinois Power and Steam Show
located just outside Sycamore. On the way home, we stopped
at Portillo’s in Sycamore for our evening meal, followed by
a roaring campfire that evening. Friday was spent looking
around the park, taking several walks, eating ice cream cones
at the local park cafe where we all had a good laugh when
one of the wives was trying to keep her ice cream cone from
melting all over and falling along with her husband’s cone (who
went in to get some bowls) and as he walked out the door, both
ice cream tops fell smoothly on the cement patio. We all had
a good laugh looking at the expressions on their faces!! That
evening, the majority of the group enjoyed a nice boat ride to
dinner (fish fry) at the cafe in the park. The boat captain gave
an interesting talk about the lake, built in the 1970s. Since the

Kentuckiana Kampground in Hopedale, IL. On Friday night we all met for
dinner at a local restaurant. Saturday
many of the members went to the

while talking with friends. After our
Saturday night potluck dinner, we
went to the Opry which is held every

What an enjoyable show! After gathering for coffee on Sunday morning,
we said our goodbyes and wished

The Who’s Yur Winnies Rally was
held Aug. 2-5. It was hosted by the
Who’s Yur Winnie’s officers, Gene
and Kathy Rieck and Lori Tindall.
Bea and Dave Odell did a lot of legwork ahead of time. We had lots of
help anytime we needed it. It was
held at Pla-Mor Campground in Bremen, IN. The campground is very
nice—most had full hookups with a
few closer to the pavilion with just
30-amp. or 50-amp. and water. We
had the use of the pavilion, which we
shared with the Escapees Group.
We had all of our meals and meetings and the auction there. We had
33 units come, including the Eastern
Representatives, Dick and Becky
Moore. Cal Cheesbrough came from
Niles, MI.
A few units were there on Tuesday or before. The park owners had
to subdue a swarm of hornets before
Gene and Kathy could park. We had
a record of 22 units come early on
Wednesday. John Ellis graciously
agreed to do the grilling and all the
campfires.
Thursday we had free time while
the other units came in and set up.
Some went to the Amish Acres Arts
and Craft Festival, which ran the
same days as ours. Others toured
Nappanee, Goshen, Elkhart, Wakarusa, and Shipshewana. The evening meal of Subway sandwiches
and sides were provided by the Indybago’s. The representatives gave a
brief talk about the improving status
of Winnebago Industries and events
at GNR, and the new friends at caravans and rallies rule. We gave out
door prizes from WIT vendors. That
evening some did the fire, some did
games, and others visited or rested.
Friday we had a full day. Mike Davis of SkyMed talked about the insurance program for travels away from
home. Steve Anderson gave a demo
on his waterless and wax products.
They were on display and available
with his wife’s, Sharon, designer
clothes, for the weekend in the Pavilion. Lori Tindall then had a Pampered Chef party called “Life is short
have dessert first.” We carpooled to
the Winnebago of Indiana plant for a
tour. We saw how they make the fifthwheels and trailers. The Meanderers
headed by Scott had a great spaghetti dinner with lots of trimmings.
We had Steve and Fran Newcomb
and Chuck Szymanski and Janean
join us for the evening. We then had
the club and chapter meetings.
Saturday we had free time to visit

the towns again. Frank and Sandy
Bertolan stopped in. The only thing
on the schedule was the evening
meal from Del-Mar Catering. We
had our celebration cake for the
Who’s Yur Winnies and Indybago’s
40 years in WIT with ice cream from
Farm and City Insurance. We had
each unit bring two items, which we
auctioned for charity. We brought
in $680 which was divided so we
can pick more groups to give to. It
will be announced at the next meeting which charities were picked. We
have a big plastic spoon that is auctioned and the winner of the spoon
gets to eat first at all the outings
for two years. This year Gene and
Kathy had to hand the spoon over to
the Indybago’s.
I always am amazed just how
much is packed into the weekend
but they go so fast.

The North Iowa Travelers left from
the south Kum and Go in Clear Lake
to caravan to Clermont, IA, on Aug.
14. Five units were in the group. We
met the Kahlers and the Swansons
at the Skip A Way Campgrounds in
Clermont.
On the trip we stopped at the Little
Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua. We reached Skip A Way Campground in Clermont around noon and
got the units set up. Fellowship and
games were next on the agenda.
A potluck dinner was held followed by the local chapter meeting.
After the meeting, we watched the
movie, “The Straight Story.” It was
about Alvin Straight who drove his
lawn mower from Laurens, IA, to WI
to see his brother. A portion of the
movie was based in Clermont. The
lawn mower he used is on display in
Clermont.
Wednesday morning we went to
13
Montauk (the home of Iowa’s 12th Governor Larrabee),
we toured the school given to Clermont by the Larrabee
family. We returned to the campground for a lunch of
“must-go’s.” We went to the Union Sunday School for a
presentation of their Kimball pipe organ. It is the largest
Kimball pipe organ still in use.
Wednesday evening the group went to the Quarry
Lodge at the campground for a meal. We were joined by
four guests that evening. We returned to our campsites
and played beanbag baseball.

Chatauqua Park in Beloit, KS was once again the site
of the August Prairie Winnies campout. Members started
gathering early during the week of the 20th and by Friday,
twenty-nine member rigs were in the park. That is a record
number of Winnebago and Itasca motor homes at this annual meeting campout and we welcomed our first SunnyBrook owners, Gary and Karen Ginther, from Goodland.
We are happy to have Ginthers as new members. Other
guests were Scott and Amber Worlock and their children.

The Winkel Manufacturing Company near Glen Elder was the site of our first tour. This 50-year old small
manufacturing business builds livestock equipment.
Once more, we marveled at the ingenuity of Kansans.
Another tour was of the Law Enforcement Center in
Beloit, which we had seen while under construction
last year and, this year, we saw the finished facility.
Finally, we saw the Port Library’s new home.
Mary Frances and Earl Engelbert’s granddaughter,
Amber, is a student at KS State University and she
was able to take part in a trip to Africa this summer.
She shared her experiences in several countries on
that continent. We also enjoyed music provided by
Terry Rewert and Neal Haerich several times throughout the weekend. And, of course, lots of good food,
either prepared by us or by several local restaurants.
During the business meeting, new officers were
elected: President—Randall Weller, Vice President—
Ron Connor, Secretary—Rosetta Bartels, and Treasurer—Cindy Conn. The date for the 2013 State Rally
was set for Apr. 26-28 at the KS State Fairgrounds.
Once again, the KS WIT members thank our hosts

Bradford’s Brigade
Quinebagos
Local Chapters
By Sandy Bates and Jerry Little
The combined MA local chapter campout with members from Bradford’s Brigade and Quinebagos was
held on July 5-10.
Thursday, over half of the attending campers arrived
in Middletown at Meadowlark Campground. Just three
miles from downtown Newport, shuttles were available to navigate the traffic and save us wear and tear
during this exciting time in Newport with the Tall Ships
being in for the weekend.
On Friday, Jerry Little and his crew got all the early
arrivals off to a good start serving up his wonderful
breakfast. Pictures were taken unknown to the crew,
as members were shuffling for positions during the
breakfast preparations which made for squeals of
laughter. We welcomed Eileen and Paul Hamel from
the CT Nutmegs, who joined us for the weekend, we
all absorbed them into our group like sponges to water. They were so gracious and well received. We all
enjoyed our delightful dinners at Anthony’s Seafood
Restaurant that evening. A family, whom happened to
be camping at the campground from the SunnyBrook
WIT Club News
family of campers, was invited to join
in.
Saturday started off with an oldfashioned breakfast to provide a
hearty start for the activities to take
place in Newport. Touring the Tall
Ships was the most popular event
of the day by most of our members;
however, there were a few rebels
who chose to do different things as
well as the expected. Yes, Linda and
Brian, I am citing you for your breezy
ride of the Segway vehicle. What a
blast that seemed to be! We know
that Trish and Mark had a full day of
viewing all the ships, because Mark
felt comfortable enough to take a
snooze after dinner with us all gabbing and laughing around him. Our
host, Ed Bates, fried a ton of chicken, which we had with all the fixings.
Wow, we do put away the food, like
professionals that we are. When you
consider those who did the Cliff Walk
during the weekend, Sue and Speck,
Marguerite and Bob, and Sandy and
Ed, no wonder we eat like longshoremen. The Hoilmans did the winery
tour and reported to the rest of us on
its merits.
Sunday, this was “Jordan Marsh
Blueberry Muffin Day.” Some grilled
them, some just warmed them, and
some just ate them out of the pan.
I know you are wondering why I am
writing so much of muffins…they
were much more than just muffins,
they were bargaining chips! I bribed
the campground staff for many of our
perks—like Diane, who didn’t turn
chip in for being off-leash; for May,
who didn’t charge us for a deposit
for the campout; and Dianna, for getting brochures for our group. So, you
see, they were more important to our
campout than what you might think.
Some of us actually stayed until
Tuesday, July 10, so we could watch
the Parade of Sails leave Narragansett Bay on Monday. The sight
was mesmerizing, watching these
ancient vessels heading toward the
horizon under full sail as they were
seen in the 1800s.

Cereal City Campers

By Bev Simonds
The Birds, Burtons, Greens,
Ross, and Simonds met at Eby Pines
in Bristol, IN for a very enjoyable
weekend. We started on Thursday
with a tour through the Winnebago
of Indiana factory. Everyone worked
up an appetite so we went to the Essenhaus for dinner and some shopping and they also had a car show
going on so some spent time looking
at all the old cars, which worked out
well to walk off some of the food that
we all overate.
Friday was a full day starting with
the RV Museum in Elkhart, we then
continued to the RV Salvage where
we found some of those parts or additions we needed for our coaches.
By this time, we are past lunch and
everyone was getting hungry so we
stopped and had a light lunch because everyone knew where we
were going in the afternoon.
After lunch we caravanned to
Nappanee and went to Coppes
Commons. We spent some time
at the bulk food store where we all
found some of those Amish goodies we all love, looked at some of
the crafts and articles for sale along
the way to the Rocket Science Ice
Cream. Everyone really enjoyed the
ice cream and we all were fascinated with the process to make it. It all
starts out when you pick the size and
the flavor that you want. Every delicious dish is prepared individually
from fresh ingredients, then flash frozen with super-cooled liquid nitrogen
right before your eyes. The process
makes the ice crystals much smaller
than regular ice cream which results
in a really smooth, velvety texture. I
personally had the kid’s size which
was the smallest and it was more
than enough ice cream. Everyone
enjoyed their generous portion of
their favorite flavor! Well worth the
October/November 2012
trip and we would all go back again!
Saturday was the shopping day!!
We went downtown Shipshewana
and spent the day finding lots of
goodies at the E & S bulk food store.
We also spent a lot of time enjoying the shops in Davis Mercantile
and all the little shops in the area.
After shopping we met back at the
campground and regrouped for dinner at Tiffany’s. What a day! We
were all lazy that evening and just
sat around and talked about our old
motor homes and things we suffered
in the process from then until now.
We all agreed, someone could write
a book, or maybe we all could!

Winnehahas
State Club
By Marcia Fabricius
The Winnehahas gathered at Autumn Woods Campground in Rochester Aug. 9-12 for a weekend of
fun, food, fellowship, and interesting
tours. There were 21 coaches on the
grounds and most of them arrived on
Thursday, because the first tour was
Friday morning.
The tour of the Ronald McDonald
House of Rochester was interesting and very moving. It is located
among the buildings of the Mayo
Clinic complex. Though there was
no interaction with the children or
families living there, Lisa, the volunteer tour guide, gave the group a
thorough understanding of how the
house operates and the huge difference it makes in the lives of sick
children and their families. Members
later voted to make a donation to the
Ronald McDonald House from the
club treasury.
Lunch was at the iconic Michael’s
Restaurant, a Rochester fixture
for well over 50 years. Following a
light supper, members caravanned
by car to the nearby Herring Gardens. This is a private home on 22
acres of land, owned by Vince and
Mary Herring. They led the group up

and down hills, up and down stone
steps, through arches, past ponds,
all covered with or surrounded by
plants and flowers. Maintenance of
the gardens is a full-time job for the
Herrings. Winnehahas were awed
by the lush gardens, the statuary
and the beauty of the entire area, but
they were glad they could visit and
didn’t have to do the work.
Two games of beanbag baseball
resulted in a tie—the men won one
and the women won the other. There
was no time for the rubber match, so
the tie stands. A round of card bingo produced eleven happy winners
and thirty disgruntled losers, though
judging from the constant laughter,
everyone was actually enjoying the
game.
There was no shortage of food.
Hosts Gene and Judy Krumpel, Dave
and Barb Seaberg, and Glenda and
John Erdman served breakfast. Herb
and Eileen Jensen of Universal Marine and RV invited the members to
tour the facility and enjoy free pizza,
soft drinks, and cookies for lunch.
And there was a potluck supper.

July: On July 19 four of our member coaches made their way to the
Silo’s KOA RV Park at Canyon Ferry Lake, 90 miles East of Helena,
MT, for our July campout. We were
joined by our president, Milt Munson,
and his wife, Rita. We were able to
renew friendship’s with the Munsons’
granddaughters, Allie and Morgan,
from Cleveland, OH, and Elly from
Billings, MT. Allie and Morgan were
with us last year in July and this year
we were lucky enough to meet Elly.
Grandchildren, even though they
may not be your own, can certainly
cause a spark to appear in a senior’s
eye, put a spring in your step, and
create a smile with the sound of
spontaneous laughter of young ladies.
The owner and staff of the RV
park hosted our Friday evening happy hour and to make sure no one
went back to their rigs hungry, they
topped off everything with chocolatecovered nachos and soft ice cream
for dipping.
On Saturday we held our July
meeting, followed by, what else, a
potluck meal. By having our potluck
earlier in the day this month, meant
more time for visiting and no one had
to begin preparation in the middle of
the afternoon for an evening meal.
After breakfast on Sunday morning at the Flamingo Grill, which is
part of the campground, we made
the rounds with our final hugs and
goodbyes and began our travel
home.
August: The Prime Cut Restaurant in Great Falls was the location
for our August meeting. This was our
final sit-down to go over the details
for our annual Labor Day Campout
with the Wild Rose Chapter of Calgary, AB, Canada.
This year is an exciting time for
our chapter to be hosting this event
as it is the 30th birthday of the WIT
WIT Club News
Montana Wilderness Chapter. The
organizational meeting for the chapter was held on May 15, 1982, at
McCollum Modern RV in Great Falls,

somewhat over the years, but we remain a proud, energetic, and enthusiastic group of Winnebago product
owners. We look forward to informing everyone in a future article about
the fantastic birthday party we had.

The Windmill Winnies had their
first campout at Royal Mountain
Campsites in the Southern Adirondacks. It is a very comfortable, wooded campground with clean facilities
and a pavilion with kitchen facilities.
The group put up gazebos, brought
picnic tables from adjacent sites,
and used an assortment of portable
tables from members’ rigs for meals,
games, and meetings.
By late Friday afternoon all the
rigs had arrived except for one,
which arrived later in the evening,
and the activities began. The campers relaxed by visiting with one another and getting to know some of
the members better. Mal and Elsie
practiced their grandparenting skills
with the Crouches’ grandchildren in
anticipation of their first grandchild’s
birth in September. The fire at Mary
and Al’s site completed the day’s activities.
After breakfast several of the
campers went blueberry picking at
a patch near the campground. After lunch many in the group played
beanbag baseball. It is a competitive group, but a good-natured one
that fought hard all three games
. . . the men took two out of three
games. Door prizes from Alpin Haus
were distributed randomly. Margaret
walked away with the amazing padded chair. Paula and Bob coordinated the RV clock with the ‘no place

scratch off lottery cards were the prizes for the bingo
games that followed.
Sunday morning after a breakfast, the group packed
up, said their goodbyes and slowly left.
We had a busy weekend of lots of good food, competitive games, blueberry picking, lots of great conversation, and great weather.

Nodak Flickertails
State Club
By Helen Evans
July 15-20, seventeen members from Nodak Flickertails State Club attended the GNR Rally. President Eleanore and Myron DeMers arrived early to attend Friday
night President’s Dinner. Volunteers for this year were:
August (Chris) Hesse, Joyce Hesse and Helen Evans,
as conductors on the People Mover. Chris also took on
the enormous task of being a traffic cop. Abby Hesse,
grandchild of Chris and Joyce, was at the Rally too and
enjoyed all the activities with the youth group. The club
also donated money to WIT youth programs.
Betty Lebrun entered her handmade purse in the arts
and craft show and won a certificate for first place in the
sewing category. Other sewing items she entered were
placed in the honorable mention sewing category. The
week was used to attend seminars and to solve problems with their RV.
Nodak Flickertails won another year of WIT Club of
Excellence. The Treasure Island sales yielded a few
dollars that was put to good use by present club members. The State Row Party was fun and all went well.
We served cheese, ND wines, ND smokies; gave away
packages of ND pinto beans; and loads of ND travel in-
formation. John Evans was instrumental in getting the
information and handing them out along with other members. After more than an hour of giving out promotional
information and conversing with those who stopped by,
he thought it was time to have a little fun with the crowd
and introduce some of the 1960s wine, Thunderbird.
Having that wine brought back many memories to those
who participated in the beverage back in those days.
More than 250 people were served. We did have people
asking for things that we have had in past years, i.e., sun
butter and sunflower seeds.
Four Flickertails members attended the WIT Red
Hat meeting at the downtown Methodist Church. Queen
Mother, Darla Lewis, was not at the meeting so Marjorie Morrison conducted the business meeting. Cathline
Hilley was elected to the office of Treasurer for 20122013. All other officers, including Marjorie Morrison, 1st
Vice Queen; Betty Lebrun, 2nd Vice Queen; and Helen
Evans, Lady Historian will remain in office. Everyone in
attendance received a gift.

Our August outing was a joint meeting with Sooner
Schooners Aug. 2-5 at Elk Creek RV Park in Elk City,
OK. We had a fun time even though it was a tad hot. I
think the “lowest” daily high was 110°, but we had a very
nice air conditioned room to hang out in. Our coaches
were challenged to stay as cool as the room so we all
spent lots of time in our room talking, eating, and playing

many games. We had four watermelons to help keep
us cool, too.
We spent time glued to the television watching the
wildfires around OK. We set out a basket and collected $100 to buy water and Gatorade for the firefighters. Thank you, Denise, for taking the money, buying
the water and Gatorade, and delivering them to a fire
station. We appreciate it.
The ladies avoided the heat by shopping early in
the morning. They came across some great western
fabric CHEAP that they will be able to use for decorating either at a state rally or GNR. Club funds were
not spent. If we do not use the fabric this year, they
felt sure we would have an opportunity to use it another time. Besides when you find such a DEAL, you
cannot pass it up.
Several of us enjoyed having lunch at a tea parlor.
Some of the husbands even came and seemed to
enjoy drinking with their pinkies in the proper position.
We all enjoyed the country western show and dinner in Clinton. It was a great way to spend the evening with great friends.

all over the floor. The dogs thought they were getting
a special treat and started lapping up the mixture with
smiles on their faces. The mixture found its way into everything, including the drawers and under the slide. After
finally getting the mess sopped up and the dog slobbers
cleaned off the floor, she tried again. Luckily things went
much smoother the second time. Needless to say, the
adventure won her the boner award.
On Saturday, Gene and Julie fixed breakfast for us
and the meeting followed breakfast. Then off to Garibaldi
for the historic train ride. I think everyone enjoyed the
ride—it was a slow-paced, relaxing journey along Tillamook Bay with views of the Pacific Ocean and a couple
of bare skinned sunbathers that everyone noticed. We
went as far as Rockaway, had a 30-minute layover so
everyone was able to take a bathroom break and find
something to eat, and then back on the train to return
to Garibaldi. We all just kind of relaxed and had to get
things ready for potluck dinner. Gene fixed a wonderful
pot roast and as usual, we had more than enough to eat.
After dinner Jim and Dottie’s son, Donald, and daughterin-law, Suzan, joined us for pass the ace. Good time was
had by all and Suzan won the pot. She did not even lose
any of her three quarters. What a winner!
Sunday morning, more eating and visiting. Sounds

Most of us arrived on Thursday, Aug. 2, and were
able to visit with each other. Kiblers and Hambys
were able to attend this outing and it was great to
see them. It has been awhile since they have been
able to come to our outings. A few went out to dinner
and the others stayed put to watch the Olympics. Janet has a new family thanks to Chuck. She has three
adorable kittens that need to be bottle fed every four
hours. You heard it right, bottle fed every four hours.
They also need to be taught to go potty. Chuck has
that stimulating job.
On Friday some of us ventured out and explored
the area, others stayed and explored the park. Later
we all left to go to dinner at Netarts. Thanks to Gene
Wiskow, we took the scenic route which was a very
nice drive but not the fast route he thought it would
be. The road was pretty curvy and bumpy. Kish was a
little green when she emerged from the Hulses’ back
seat. Dinner was very good and then we headed off
to the Cheese Factory for some ice cream.
While everyone was content and relaxing after
their dinner and ice cream, Julie decided to make
preparations for Saturday’s breakfast. After mixing
18 eggs and some milk in a large bowl, she turned
and managed to spill the entire bowl of eggs and milk
mixture down the front of her kitchen cupboards and

like all we did was eat and visit, but it was really a quiet
and relaxing weekend. Cleaned up and most everyone
left for home. Rocheleaus and Kiblers stayed for one
more night. The weather was so beautiful it made it difficult to go home.

We have been members of WIT for only 1½ years and
we attended GNR last year and were quite pleased with
the rally. However, we noticed that the PA row was a little
lacking in decorations and we discussed the lack of decorations at our State Rally’s fall planning meeting. After
discussing it with several other members of our chapter
(Capital Area Winnies), we in PA needed to decorate a
coach for the head of row.
We came up with the idea of making a pirate face
to cover the entire front of the coach. It was unveiled
at our State Rally in June and it was well received by
everybody who attended the State Rally. From there we
decided to make a small pirate face to go on a golf cart
for the opening ceremonies at GNR.
We were delighted and surprised at the response the
pirate faces received from our fellow WIT members at
GNR. Being awarded first place in Division 1, Best State
Row Decorations, made all of our efforts worthwhile. It
was a joint effort from all the members of the PA row.
On the way to IA, we stopped in IL to pick up our
granddaughter, Allie. We had signed her up for the Youth
Program and she said that while she enjoyed all the activities, her favorite was going to Adventureland and her
least favorite was the dance on the last night because
she had to say goodbye to the friends that she made
during the week.
We are looking forward to attending future rallies.

July: On July 10-12, eleven members of the Rhody
Winnies gathered at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT. This parking lot location overlooking the
Thames River is an ideal spot to watch the spectacular fireworks on Wednesday nights during the months
of July and August. In addition, the casino sponsors a
classic car show as well as dining specials. This popular
event has turned into an annual campout for the Rhody
Winnies.
August: The Rhody Winnies and the Granite State
Winnies gathered at the Megunticook Campground by
the Sea in Rockport, ME on July 31 to Aug. 3 for the annual Rockport Lobster Festival. In addition to enjoying
lobster dinners, chowder, lobster rolls and other goodies,
some members took a tour of the Navy ship, U.S. San
Antonio, which was anchored in the harbor. Everyone
gathered at the campground on Wednesday evening for
a social time and storytelling. Thursday was another day
of sightseeing at the Festival followed by a happy hour
and potluck dinner. Friday morning everyone gathered
for coffee before saying their farewells.
August: Ten members of the Rhody Winnies journeyed to Bald Mountain Campground in Townshend, VT
for a campout on Aug. 12-17. This was a quiet setting on
the West River. The major activity for the week was just
sitting around, resting, and catching up on everyone’s
activities since our last get-together. There was a lot of
reading done as internet access was only available at
the office and no cell phone service was available. On
Monday a group went to the Newfane Country Store.
This is an old-fashioned New England country store.
Wednesday, everyone went into Manchester, VT to shop
at the factory retail stores and then gathered at the Ye
Old Country Tavern, established in 1790, for a very delicious early evening meal. On Thursday, several members went tubing down the West River and had a great
time. Friday morning saw everyone leaving with several
members going on to the Northern New England Rally.

The Rushmore Winnies August meeting was held at
Three Flags RV Park in Black Hawk, SD on Aug. 17-19,
2012.
The highlights of the weekend related to Black Hawk’s
125 Years Celebration. Events included a pancake
breakfast, parade, car show, unveiling of the vault buried
25 years ago, collection and burial of items for a new
vault, and a street dance. Saturday’s dinner at Murphy’s
Pub and Grill in Rapid City was followed by a gathering
back at the campground around the outdoor TV screen
on a Winnebago Journey to watch the Broncos play football. An enjoyable weekend of friends, food and fun, reminding us of why we like our Winnebago lifestyle!!

Friday, Aug. 10. Despite the rush hour traffic, we had
a nice turnout of eighteen members and two guests,
Mitch and Jackie Tillotson of Robson Ranch. We were
excited to have Forrest and Lorene among us again
but saddened by the news that they have sold their
coach and now will take to the roads by car from now
on.
The June minutes and the current treasurer’s report were passed around for review along with the proposed agenda for the Sept. 7-9 meeting.
Conversation was lively and hopefully the food was
to everyone’s liking. I sure enjoyed my fried catfish.

The Tidewater Tascas had eight coaches attending. The state meeting was held Aug. 17-19 at Cozy
Acres CG in Powhatan, VA. The Virginia Coasters
were the host chapter. The Martins were our chapter
hosts and they provided dinner Friday night for the
Tascas followed by the social hour and bingo with
the rest of the chapters. The Aldriches arrived in their
new 2011 Reyo 25Q and had a tour for anyone who
wanted to see it. Saturday breakfast was provided by
the Coasters. We then had our chapter meetings and
lunch was on your own. Games and a period for craft
making were arranged for the afternoon. The making
of a paper snowflake was the highlight of the craft period. Dinner was a potluck with everyone providing a
dish. Sunday morning we had a continental breakfast
and then set aside time for a devotional. Afterward,
everyone started breaking down and heading home.
We look forward to our next camp event.

July: A new adventure for some of our members
took place this year—an excursion into the southeast
area of the Kootenay Rockies’ region of BC. This area
is a hidden jewel, blessed with amazing diversity and
a photographer’s paradise.
The trek began in Coeur d’Alene, ID on the banks
of Lake Coeur d’Alene where JD and Kathy Allen,
Dewey and Tana Blocker, Joe and Donna Coorough,
and Rod and Sandie Wilson met to begin their adventure.
20
From Coeur d’Alene, we journeyed north through the
ID panhandle. It was an easy sojourn, good roads, and,
of course, beautiful scenery.
First stop, Fort Steele, Cranbrook, and Kimberley, BC.
Kimberley is known as the ‘Bavarian City of the Rockies.’
We managed to visit during their annual July Fest and
enjoyed some seriously good Bavarian food. We also
explored Fort Steele Heritage Town—it is a time capsule
of a restored turn-of-the-century town with the sights and
sounds of frontier life.
Next on our trek were the villages of Fernie and Sparwood. The Canadian Rocky Mountains completely encircle the small community of Fernie, where mountain
biking is the order of the day. Visits to the coal mining operations in Sparwood and crossing the Crowsnest Pass
into a view of neighboring AB was a highlight.
Subsequently, our plans were to head north into the
Radium Hot Springs, Banff, and Lake Louise area; however, we were sidetracked due to extensive mud slides
and water damage, virtually wiping out most of the RV
parks and resorts in the hot springs area. Several people
were killed and over 800 campers were stranded. Roads
were closed for several days.
Our travel plans were reevaluated and we decided to

check out the sites of the town of Creston, located at the
bottom of Kootenay Lake. Visits to a couple of wineries
as well as a local cheese farm proved to be most enjoyable. The wineries offered some of the best winetasting
we have ever had. Next stop was a tour of the Kootenay
Brewery—free samples were enjoyed by all.
We then traveled to the West Kootenay Valley village
of Kaslo. A good, but very rugged road followed the lake
up to Crawford Bay where a ferry ride was necessary to
continue our trip. Kaslo was an enchanting mountain village on the edge of the Kootenay Lake. The time spent
in this area gave us ample time to explore and visit the
local shops and take in the beautiful scenery.
The Wilsons and Allens took the opportunity to visit
an old ghost town in the area and then joined Tana and
Donna on a trip to the village of Nelson, about an hour
away. Nelson takes you back in time to the 50s and 60s
and is a well-preserved example of that era.
After several days in this area, it was time to head
home. We left Kaslo bound for Nelson, with expectations
of crossing the border at Paterson and on to Kettle Falls,
ID for the night. Next day it was on to Cle Elum, WA,
where we spent our last night together on the road. We
spent three weeks sharing found memories, beautiful
scenery, and tall tales around the campfires at night. We
truly enjoyed the experience.
August: The August meeting was Aug. 23-26 at the
American Sunset RV Park in Westport, WA. The Cooks,
Dickeys, Stientjes, Stanfords, Woods, Allens, Flanaghans, and past member, Dave Roberts, joined Wagonmasters Jeff and Carole Grindstaff at the beach in
quaint Westport. This area presented great beach combing, fishing, eating, shopping, and great company of fellow members. The weekend was low-keyed and restful.
Everyone enjoyed various activities and the beautiful
weather the weekend provided. Those with dogs could
be found at the beach all three days. The dogs were allowed to run freely and they had a great time doing so.
The owners also enjoyed beach time.

Several members from our club made the long trip
to Moses Lake, WA for the Northwest Regional Rally.
From what we were told, they were treated like royalty.
Everyone who went had a wonderful time with lots of
visiting, eating, and making new friends. Hopefully next
time, more of us will be able to attend.
In June, 19 people attended the Aspen Crossing outing. This is a working nursery with campground and an
old dining car and other railroad memorabilia. For this
outing, we decided to forego the potluck and eat at the
old dining car. This car was used by one of our former
Prime Ministers to travel across Canada. It is very nicely
refurbished and is used for lots of functions. There is
also a unique gift shop on the premises. After supper,
we all went back to the shelter for dessert. An enjoyable
weekend was had by all. We were so happy to have Julius Horbachewsky join us.
Our next outing will be to Pioneer Acres, a farming
museum north of Calgary. This is our annual Friendship
outing. It will be enjoyable seeing old friends and doing a
lot of visiting and catching up. The camping is inexpensive and with the weekend pass, there is a lot to see and
do. Threshing and tractor pulls are just a couple of things
the men enjoy.

July: The July outing was held at the Canyon Alpine
resort just north of Boston Bar on the Fraser River in BC.
The owners, Brent and Brenda, made us very welcome
and were so happy to have their campground full for the
first time under their ownership. Sixteen FVE coaches
attended the weekend. On Friday morning a bunch of
us set off to visit Hell’s Gate where a group rate had
been negotiated for us and we were given free season
passes. We rode the aerial tram down to the river level
and walked around the many exhibits, through the gift
store, and out on to the suspension bridge to watch the
salmon preparing to ascend the river via the fish ladders.
The next day, after a morning breakfast, chapter
meeting and a game of ladder golf, four brave souls
decided to relive their youth and went river rafting on
the Thompson River. We hear that Nina and Sandy’s
screams, as they went over some rapids, were quite
loud and that Mike Mould added a few more bruises to
his collection. For the rest of us, we had different entertainment. A friend of the Smiths arrived to escort several
of us to Kenny’s Kreations in Lytton. Kenny’s place is
indescribable—he has created all kinds of pieces of art
from scrap metal and written sayings about life and freedom as titles. On the way back to the campground, a few
of us stopped at the confluence of the two rivers—Fraser
and Thompson—to watch the mingling of the muddy and
clear waters.

August: What a difference a month makes! Summer
has finally arrived on the ‘wet’ west coast. The Eagle
Vista RV Park in Squamish was the venue for the FVE
August outing. It has been two years since our last visit
here and the park has added a large yurt on a raised
wooden deck as their clubhouse. Those who arrived in
time for dinner on Thursday, including Derek Hudson
who arrived on his motorcycle, went to the Squamish
Golf Club. Another sixteen coaches attended this weekend, with two more couples arriving Saturday morning
for the chapter meeting.
Friday afternoon our host, John Duke, had booked a
tour for us of the Britannia Copper Mine, which was in
operation from 1902 to 1974. Approximately 47 million
tons of ore was extracted from the mine during its 72
years of operation. The mine is now a Provincial museum.
Saturday morning, after our usual breakfast followed
by the chapter meeting, most of us drove up to Whistler,
the venue for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Several went
up the gondola to the top of the mountain to take the new
peak-to-peak gondola between the peaks of Whistler and
Blackcomb mountains. It is an awesome view. Others
stayed in the village for lunch and to mooch about. That
evening, as we sat around the campfire, Darlene Scott
brought out her guitar and we all sang song titles—only
because we could not remember the rest of the words.

WIT RADIO
The WIT Radio members at GNR 2012 gathered on
Thursday evening.
Did you know there are 3 million amateur radio operators worldwide? 738,497 operators live in the United
States. What is amateur radio? It’s where two or more
persons who have their amateur radio licenses communicate to each other locally or all over the world. Did you
know you don’t have to learn Morse Code to obtain your
amateur radio license? One has to pass a written test
given by licensed examiners. There are many books and
question pools about learning how to become an amateur radio operator.
WIT RADIO opened the week of GNR with a Special
Events Station. The club set up the station on Saturday,
July 14, operating on 20 meters in the WITRADIO row.
Ham radio operators try to contact as many stations as
possible. Conditions weren’t the best, but the ham radio
operators were able to make 35 contacts which included
states east to the west coast, including Canada. Five
operators used the HF station to make contacts. We encourage more hams to operate next year.
Another event held was a Fox Hunt. Wednesday
Gary (KK4GGK) and Margie (KK4AGN) Spangenberg
explained to the hams how to track the “fox transmitter” using a small handheld radio. The instructions were
given and in no time, Ted Shelly (KØDDB) found the fox!

WIT SINGERS
The WIT Singers started their singing preparations
long before the GNR WIT Rally opening ceremonies!
WIT Singers President Mary Harms sent out e-mails and
music to prepare us for the rally and save time in learning new songs. After many hours of finding, printing, and
organizing music the end result was WIT Singers singing
in harmony.
The Puckerbrush Parade in Forest City provided the
singers on the WIT Singers float with as much fun as the
parade viewers. What a site to see - the WIT Singers in
their pirate costumes on the float decorated for the parade, throwing Mardi Gras beads, coins and candy to the
parade onlookers! Randall Weller once again provided
the transportation. Phyllis Weller, the music accompaniment to keep the singers in tune.
Practice, practice, and more practice and then the
pizza party provided fun and getting reacquainted and
time to meet our new singers.
The Church service was once again a time to sing
songs many are familiar with, in addition to new songs.
The schedule provided for plenty of practice time and
then off to the GNR activities.
The GNR Opening Ceremony gave the attendees
a taste of jokes and singing. Mike Hadel presented a
fun piece that began with ‘Ahoy Maties! Welcome to
GNRRRRR.’ This fun piece written by Mary Harms and
added to by Mike Hadel made for a fun Pirates presentation.
WIT Singers were asked to sing a patriotic song at
the MILWIT Flag Retirement and Tribute Ceremony. The
respect shown to the flag and to the military was quite
impressive.
At the General Meeting the motion to donate to the
GNR Youth was quickly passed. The singers agreed the
WIT staff does a good job at keeping the youth busy and
entertained.
Performance at the Entertainment Tent once again
gave us a chance to be pirates! Songs, jokes and fun!
WIT Singers sang with us when their GNR schedules
allowed. Ida Duffy we’re always happy to have you join
us, in between, your MILWIT duties.
We missed the longtime and new members who
could not be with us due to their own health problems
or their families. We missed you Ruth (WIT Singers Past
President) and Don, Carolyn, Dorothie, Lynn, Mary Ann,
and others.
We’re looking forward to the 2013 GNR! We’ll be looking for volunteers to help the WIT Singers Vice President
Mike Hadel with planning and decorating the 2013 float
for the Puckerbrush Parade in Forest City. You say you
don’t sing. We’re also looking for help with other duties,
such as taking pictures, practice area moving tables out
of the way and chairs to where needed, and then afterward return the chairs and tables to where they were
originally. We’re also looking for any photos from past
years of the WIT Singers.
The WIT Singers ended the Closing Ceremonies with
‘Happy Trails’. As the song goes.. Happy Trails to you,
until we meet again….
