Farewell Sister Pauline Wittry
Sister Pauline is moving to St. Rose Convent
in La Crosse. Her years at Marywood FSC
began during the transition from a place for
the FSPA Leadership and a location for
retreats and respite for Sisters, to a retreat
center open to the public. In 1992, she
began inspirational programs at Marywood
for interested persons in the community and
surrounding area.
Her passion for assisting others on their life
journeys, including grief counseling and cosmology, was an asset experienced by many
who came to Marywood. Sister Pauline will
be missed by all at Marywood and many
others across the Northwoods.
So it is with mixed emotions and with love in
our hearts, we say farewell, Sister Pauline.

Dear Friends of Marywood,
“There is nothing
in the world
more beautiful
than the forest
clothed to its
very hollows
in snow.
It is the still
ecstasy of nature,
wherein every spray,
every blade of grass,
every spire of reed,
every intricacy of twig,
is clad
with radiance.”
–William Sharp
Thank you for being supporters of Marywood, recognizing the awesome
gift we have here in the Northwoods. The beauty of God speaks to us
through nature and our guests in every season! Wisdom born of experience and learning from one another are fruits of various discussion
groups that develop within our programming. One-to-one conversations
often leave something to think about long after the encounter.
What an adventure people of faith around the world are experiencing
with Pope Francis and his call to living the ”good life of the gospel”
every day of our lives. The Year of Mercy, heard by all, adds to our own
joy at experiencing mercy and forgiveness and sets forth the challenge
to do likewise. This new year, 2016, provides opportunity for each of us
– may we be drawn to soul searching within and reaching out to others.
May the holidays commemorated January thru April – especially Easter,
celebrating resurrection and new life – be blessed with all you would
want them to be.
“Remember not the events of the past,
the things of long ago consider not;”
“See I am doing something new. Now it
springs forth, do you not perceive it?”
Peace,
Sister Elizabeth Amman

A retreat offers an opportunity to foster a deeper
prayer life that allows a person to be consoled, strength-
ened and spiritually new. It is a time to draw closer to God
through a quiet and restful atmosphere. It is a time to fully
enter into personal prayer, personal reflection and community prayer. A retreat allows rest and an opportunity to slow down,
examine priorities, and time for spiritual counseling/direction.

New Year’s Resolutions have a long
history for most of us. We want to lose
weight or we want to be more healthy
in body, mind and spirit. We will spend
time looking at areas of our lives
where new resolutions need to be
made and discover practical and realistic ways of accomplishing them. “Tell
me, what do you want to do with your
one wild and precious life?” (Mary
Oliver). Suggested offering $10.00.

THE ABCs of FRANCIS and
CLARE OF ASSISI
January 14 - Thursday
9:30-11:30 a.m.
Presenter: Marla Lang, FSPA
Who are Francis and Clare of Assisi?
Who are people talking about when
they speak of Franciscans today?
What is the “Francis effect” that is
sometimes referred to? Suggested offering $10.00.
THE YEAR OF MERCY: What is it
and why do we need it?
January 21 - Thursday
9:30-11:30 a.m.
Facilitator: Joyce Heil
In the months following his election,
Pope Francis became convinced that
the conversion of the world needs to
come, at this time, through mercy. He
proclaimed a Jubilee Year of Mercy
that began on December 8, 2015. In
calling us to mercy he said, “The
Church is a mother: She has to go out
to heal those who are hurting, with
mercy ... She must travel this path of
mercy and find a form of mercy for
all.” Let us reflect on what a year of
mercy might mean to our world and in
our lives. Suggested offering $10.00.
STRETCHING TO ‘BOTH/AND’
THINKING/LIVING
January 25 - Monday
9:30-11:30 a.m.
Presenter: Marla Lang, FSPA
We will examine some of the traps that
we seek to lessen in building wholesome relationships. Comparing, competing, conflicting are more about
splitting sides. The second half of life
is more about creating this wholeness
in our speech and actions. Suggested
offering $10.00.
"A nation can be considered great when it defends liberty as
Lincoln did, when it fosters a culture which enables people to
'dream' of full rights for all their brothers and sisters, as
Martin Luther King sought to do; when it strives for justice and
the cause of the oppressed, as Dorothy Day did by her tireless
work, the fruit of a faith which becomes dialogue and sows
peace in the contemplative style of Thomas Merton.”
– Pope Francis in his address to Congress 2015
Programs - February 2016
WATERCOLOR: Saving and
Restoring Whites
February 8 - Monday
9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Presenter: Karen Kappell, FSPA
This workshop will concentrate on a
number of ways to keep whites and
lights in watercolor paintings. Because
of the transparency of watercolor,
learning to do this can greatly enhance
paintings and create a luminous feel to
the painting. Florals would be a good
subject choice. Bring watercolors, a
stretched half-sheet of 140# watercolor
cold press paper and block out if you
have it. Fee: $30.00; bring a bag lunch.
Register by Monday, February 1.
PSALMS – A CENTURIES OLD
PRAYER BOOK
February 8 - Monday
9:30-11:30 a.m.
Presenter: Marla Lang, FSPA
The Psalms are known as masterpieces
of prayer. These incomparable prayers
nourish us personally and communally.
The Psalms teach us ways to pray. We
will explore how they can become
more helpful in our prayer with God
and others. Suggested offering $10.00.
MIXED MEDIA: Gouache and
Watercolor
February 9 - Tuesday
9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Presenter: Karen Kappell, FSPA
This workshop will use a combination
of both transparent watercolor and
opaque gouache in a watercolor painting. By adding only white gouache
(provided) to transparent watercolors,
a paint having more body and opacity
can be created and provide a way that
might enhance your ideas and expression. Bring watercolor paints and supplies, a stretched sheet of watercolor
paper and landscape or floral drawings
or photos. Gouache will be provided.
Fee: $30.00; bring a bag lunch. Register by Wednesday, February 3.
ART/PRAYER JOURNALING
February 10 - Wednesday
9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Presenter: Karen Kappell, FSPA
Using simple techniques from drawing
and painting one can express in nonverbals deep connections with the divine in our lives and lead one into
fuller contemplation. Many times we
cannot find words to pray what is most
sacred to us. We hope to explore some
ways of bringing together art and
prayer. All materials will be provided.
Fee: $30.00; bring a bag lunch. Register by Wednesday, February 3.

Francis Thompson’s famous poem has
enriched the lives of many. His manner
of expressing the ever-seeking God
gives one much to hear, share, suppose, explore and ‘be’ with. Join with
others for perhaps a new look at an old
poem. Suggested offering $10.00.
40 DAYS OF GRATITUDE:
A new approach to Lent
February 25 - Thursday
9:30-11:30 a.m.
Facilitator: Joyce Heil
Joy is not a notion usually associated
with Lent. We tend to think more
somber thoughts: denial, penitence,
abstinence and the like. There is a
place for all of that, but joy is essential
to this season. Remembering the journey of Jesus during Lent can lead us to
gratitude and gratitude can lead us to
joy and Easter. Let us move from penitence to gratitude and joy, together.
Suggested offering $10.00.
UNDERSTANDING MUSLIM
WOMEN
February 26 - Friday
9:30-11:30 a.m.

Painting in Watercolor
March 1- Tuesday
9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Presenter: Karen Kappell, FSPA
Keeping strong colors in watercolors
can be a challenge and in this class we
will learn one way of creating bold and
vibrant watercolor paintings. Using a
palette knife as well as a brush we will
creatively work on distribution of
color with watercolor media, practice
some techniques, and then apply them
to a painting. You will
learn to use a palette
knife in two ways: to
add or subtract. Bring
paints, palette knife,
brushes, heavy watercolor paper or
stretched watercolor
paper and photos of
large, light valued
flowers. Fee: $30.00;
bring a bag lunch.
Register by Tuesday,
February 23.

Fibers and Fluid
Acrylics/Watercolor
March 2 -Wednesday
9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Presenter: Karen Kappell, FSPA
Dig into your rag bag for any natural
materials that have fibers: lace,
cheesecloth, netting, string. We will
create a support that will be a base for
a highly textured painting. Because of
the limited time for drying, we will not
have a highly raised surface, but one
with a lot of variety. You will need to
bring some of the above, plus brushes
and watercolor supplies and a
stretched half-sheet of watercolor
paper. If you have matt gel or gesso
bring that, too. Fee: $30.00; bring a
bag lunch. Register by Wednesday,
February 24.

IRIS FOLDING CARDS
March 3 - Thursday
9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Presenter: Karen Kappell, FSPA
Iris folding is a delightful fun and relaxing paper craft activity easily done
by anyone. Using templates we will
create designs out of lightweight
paper. These designs will be placed on
card stock to make hand-made cards.
Once learned, this project can be easily
continued at home during your leisure.
Several templates will be provided.
Bring a sharp scissors,
lightweight wrapping
paper (small scrap sheets
are fine), and transparent
Scotch tape. Fee: $30.00;
bring a bag lunch. Register by Thursday, February
25.
DEATH OF JESUS

MERCIFUL LIFE
March 17- Thursday
9:30-11:30 a.m.
Facilitator: Joyce Heil
In this Jubilee Year for Mercy we
gather to look at mercy in our lives.

is so merciful toward us. We too
should learn to be merciful…” Pope
Francis. Suggested offering $10.00.

three essential prayers. Come pray
with us. The book will be available for

TO ME?
March 30 - Wednesday
9:30-11:30 a.m.
Facilitator: Joyce Heil
We have gone through the darkness of
Good Friday and the Alleluia of Easter
Sunday. Now what? Where do we go
from here? What does the wonder of
Easter look like in our lives and how
do we act because we believe in
Easter? “We are Easter people and Alleluia is our song.” Really? Suggested
offering $10.00.
Programs - April 2016
THE BIBLE MAKES SENSE
April 1- Friday
9:30-11:30 a.m.
Facilitator: Joyce Heil
It is strange that the Bible is our most
treasured book, and yet it seems so difficult that we don’t find it very helpful
in our daily lives. Have we expected
the wrong things from it or do we ask
of it what it cannot do? We will look at
how the Bible was put together and see
it as a precious gift which can help us
live a life of joy and wholeness. Suggested offering $10.00.
WATERCOLOR:
Dry-Brush Painting
April 4 - Monday
9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Presenter: Karen Kappell, FSPA
With dry brush painting one has a lot
of control where the paint goes and depending on the paper and application
can have a refined and definite approach or establish a mood or texture
to a painting. We will use it on rough
watercolor paper to create a shimmering water effect, so select a subject of
water with strong effects of sun on it.
Bring to class watercolor supplies, a
stretched half-sheet of rough watercolor paper. Fee: $30.00; bring a bag
lunch. Register by Monday, March 28.

April 5 - Tuesday
9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

create a strong sheet and then painting
on the brayed papers to create papers
to be used for collage or other projects.
We will create a small 12 by 12-inch
painting with some of the papers we
have created. Canvas and materials
will be provided. Fee: $35.00; bring a

April 6 - Wednesday
9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

A Prayer for Our Earth
All powerful God,
you are present in the whole universe
and in the smallest of your creatures.
You embrace with your tenderness all that exists.
Pour out upon us the power of your love,
that we may protect life and beauty.
Fill us with peace, that we may live
as brothers and sisters, harming no one.
O God of the poor,
help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten
of this earth, so precious in your eyes.
Bring healing to our lives,
that we may protect the world and not prey on it,
that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction.
Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain
at the expense of the poor and the earth.
Teach us to discover the worth of each thing,
to be filled with awe and contemplation,
to recognize that we are profoundly united
with every creature
as we journey towards your infinite light.
We thank you for being with us each day.
Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle
for justice, love and peace.

Companion on the Journey: Resurgence of Spiritual Direction
Today, we are exhaustively self-aware. Fostering an interior life is no longer reserved for a few
monastics. A reflective life is cultivated in the arts, in sports, and in social activities of many
kinds. Works on the “spirituality”-of-just-about-everything line our bookshelves. Yet, people
feel empty.
People who feel fragmented are seeking authenticity. People who are making major decisions
are looking for discernment. People who are experiencing the presence of God in a new way are
looking for validation. People who are exhausted in their ministry are looking for relief. People
who feel distant from God are seeking intimacy. Those concerned about the poor and marginalized are looking for solidarity. People from many walks of life are looking for spiritual guidance
from someone who is steeped in Scripture, and who has both feet planted firmly on the ground.
There is a renewed interest in spiritual direction.
The spiritual director is not a counselor, but one who simply helps a person become more aware
of the presence of God in the normal circumstances and relationships. The conversation with a
person in spiritual direction is casual, but through the assistance of the director/guide’s comments, and perhaps questions, a person’s awareness of the Holy in everyday life is enhanced.
Spiritual Direction has had a long and respected tradition in the history of Christianity. People
sought out the desert mothers and fathers to become more aware of the real presence of God.
So it is today, as a contemporary spiritual director points to the activity of the Holy in a person’s
relationships and ordinary experiences of life.
Marywood Franciscan Spirituality Center is a place where people of all walks of life can seek
spiritual direction in confidence. Trained and experienced spiritual directors/guides of varied
backgrounds are available to all.
