We are happy to update and inspire you with progress on
the bank and the financial industry, whether you are our
customers, employees or stakeholders.
As a full-fledged Islamic bank, Kuwait Finance House (Malaysia)
Berhad (KFH Malaysia) offers a wide range of Shariah-based products
and services in the field of corporate and investment to commercial
and retail banking. Our recent efforts to advance our retail and
consumer banking business have started to show results when
the bank bagged the ‘Most Outstanding Islamic Consumer Banking
Product’ award for the KFH Gold-Account-i at the Kuala Lumpur
Islamic Finance Forum (KLIFF) Awards 2011. The product has been
very well received by Muslims and non-Muslims due to it being secure
and convenient, and is further strengthened with the strong position
of gold in the market.
KFH Malaysia is dedicated to emulating the footsteps of its parent
company in Kuwait to be at the forefront in spreading the virtues and
knowledge of Islam in the areas where it operates. Since
setting foot in the country more than six years ago, the
bank has participated in the financing of many large-scale
projects for various industries, which include property,
healthcare and airlines. These efforts continue with KFH
Malaysia becoming the main financier in the infrastructure
development of Islamic religious schools in the state of
Johor. The Murabahah Tawarruq facility of up to RM160
million was provided to MysysNet Development Sdn Bhd,
the company appointed by the Johor state government to
undertake the project.
KFH Malaysia has also just announced its new Chairman,
Dr. Nabeel Al-Mannae. Dr. Nabeel was the Deputy Governor
of the Central Bank of Kuwait before joining the KFH
Group early this year. His extensive experience for over
two decades will enable us to boost KFH Malaysia as the
platform for long-term expansion of the Group in the AsiaPacific region, and thus support the aspirations of Malaysia
as an international Islamic financial hub.
In terms of corporate social responsibility (CSR), KFH Malaysia
has created its CSR flagship where we hope to streamline our
contribution to society. We have also organised several staff
activities to inculcate the spirit of togetherness. We hope our
combined efforts in business, employee welfare and community
development will lead us to overall long-term success.
Best regards,

The Experts Say
RISING DEMAND
FOR ISLAMIC FINANCE EXPERTS
IN THE GLOBAL INDUSTRY
Introduction: Rapid growth of Islamic finance industry globally
Islamic banking assets in Malaysia have grown an average of 20 per cent annually
since 2006 to RM350.8bn (USD111bn) in 2010. It is estimated that Malaysia will
provide job opportunities for more than 12,000* practitioners of Islamic finance.
Islamic finance worldwide is also experiencing a similar growth. Assets that
comply with Islam’s tenets are estimated to almost triple by 2015 to USD2.8
trillion. Shariah-compliant bonds returned 6.9 per cent this year, according to
the HSBC/NASDAQ Dubai US Dollar Sukuk Index, outpacing the 5.9 per cent jump
in emerging-market debt. Global sales of sukuk have risen to USD17.4bn in 2011,
from USD10.7bn in the same period last year. Issuance reached a record USD31bn in
2007.
Supply versus demand for talent
Significant growth in the industry in the last few years, combined with the
establishment of new players in non-traditional markets is taking a toll on the
sector’s already limited pool of human capital where demand far outnumbers the
supply. The movement of highly-skilled candidates from one country or region
to another is becoming the norm. The Islamic finance industry is already seeing
a bottleneck where there are more companies and projects formed than there
are skilled individuals to fill these vacancies. The sustainable growth of Islamic
finance is highly dependent on the availability of professional talent to meet the
diverse needs of the industry. This unfavourable development calls for employers
to be more flexible and realise that there really is a ‘competition for talent’
and the best equipped and most farsighted will be the winner, especially as the
market grows on a global basis.
The high demand for Malaysian Islamic banking experts due to
English language proficiency and pull factors from the GCC
The more mature markets in countries such as Malaysia are undergoing a ‘brain
drain’, where Islamic finance professionals especially are being offered positions
in other mature markets, such as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries,
where the industry is experiencing unprecedented growth. Headhunting is being
carried out on a global basis to lure these prized candidates with attractive salary
and benefits. The tax-free status provided is a significant incentive for them to
change jobs. Other ‘pull factors’ include higher earnings potential and better
career prospects as well as higher quality of education and quality of life abroad.
Hence, our talents are being exported and they are doing very well abroad.
Efforts taken to increase talent, globally and in Malaysia
Acknowledging the situation, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has established
the International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF), with

programmes for practitioners and
post-graduate studies, in a bid
to establish a balance between
talent supply and demand. Other
Human Capital Development (HCD)
initiatives include generous tax
incentives that are accorded for
talent enrichment; an endowment
fund worth USD62.5 million that
was established to fund the
enhancement of knowledge,
research, talents and intellectual
discourse in Islamic finance; and
supportive immigration policies that
encourage expatriates to participate
in Malaysia’s Islamic finance
industry. The country is currently
home to two Islamic universities
and various institutions of higher
learning offering specialisations and
training in Islamic finance.
Various efforts and initiatives have
been undertaken worldwide to avert
shortage of Islamic finance industry
experts. These include:
•A Bahraini group, one that sets
standards for Islamic finance in 45
countries, is helping universities
start Shariah-compliant business
courses to avert a shortage of
experts in the USD1 trillion market.
•Pakistan is offering its first
doctorate in Shariah banking, while
the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has
introduced an Islamic Masters of
Business Administration.
•Countries including Nigeria,
Thailand, Australia and France plan
to introduce legislation to facilitate
Islamic financing, moves that will
boost demand for scholars to certify
that the products meet Islam’s ban
on interest payments.
•Canadian University of Dubai is
offering a UAE- accredited MBA in
Islamic banking.
•Experts in Singapore are also
setting up an association focused
on Shariah-compliant investments
to foster links between bankers,
lawyers and investors in the Arabian
Gulf and Asia.

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL
WITH RAJA ZARINA RAJA MOHD YUSOF,
KFH MALAYSIA BRANCH MANAGER – KUALA LUMPUR MAIN BRANCH
How do you feel about your role as
the Branch Manager, KFH Malaysia
KL Main Branch?
Since KFH Malaysia decided to grow
its retail banking business more than a
year ago, the branch has also geared
up its efforts to support the bank’s
overall objectives. During the first six
to eight months after I assumed this
role, we focused on customer outreach
activities. My staff would often go
out and meet potential customers to
introduce our retail and consumer
banking services and products. The
branch caters to a wide geographical
sector, and we reach out to customers
as far as Bangi, Bangsar and Taman
Tun Dr Ismail. I love my job and I am
passionate about branch business.
Can you share a little on your
background?
I have been in the banking industry
for 18 years. My experience consists
mostly of branch operations and
customer service, among others.
I have three school-going children.
We spend most of our vacations at
island resorts and beaches. During
family time, I play games with my
kids or get involved in storytelling.
In terms of hobby, I enjoy health and
fitness activities. I like going to the
gym, jogging and cycling, which I
intend to do more aggressively. My
husband and I love Johor food and
take the time to explore different
outlets.
What do the city customers look
for in a bank?
The city customers are aware of
Islamic banking and the benefits of
the products available. Most of them
are very busy, so you have to speed
up the process and make it easy for
them. They value personalised service
and covenience, where their bankers
provide consistent updates on the
current market situation and share
investment advice. This is where you

gain customer loyalty and referral,
especially from high net worth
clients, when they are confident that

What is the current most
popular product?
KFH Gold Account-i is an excellent
product and hard to beat. Customers
are confident with its Islamic concept
and pleased with the fees waived. It is
basically buying and selling gold without
any hidden charges. This transparency
makes customers happy doing their
banking with us. To date, gold account
contributes to 35% of KL Main Branch’s
current and savings accounts.
What have you observed since
the branch’s opening?
I first joined KFH Malaysia as part
of the bank’s pioneer batch and
then re-joined as part of the retail
team. KFH Malaysia is a relatively
new bank and we are still growing.

With the opening of KFH Malaysia’s

I believe we will become one of the

grateful for colleagues’ referrals and
we also benefit from our collaborative
work culture. It is a competitive
market, but with drive and high
commitment, we shall succeed.
How do you manage your busy
schedule and achieve a worklife balance?
Focus is very important to me. I
maximise office hours to complete
my responsibilities and deliver on
time. It takes good planning and
time management to be able to cope
and reach your target at the end of
the year. I am also lucky to have an
understanding and supportive family.
How big is your branch team and
how do you motivate them?
I manage a team of 12 from both
sales and operation units. We have
an informal weekly get-together to
bring us closer and inculcate team
spirit. My staff are groomed to be
independent and hands-on to serve
customers. I support them with
my experience and by giving them
referrals and advice on how to face
the on-going challenges. I constantly
coach and educate them so they will
continuously grow and be able to take
on higher responsibilities. Teamwork
is very crucial for us to deliver. As
the branch grows, the team is more
prepared to be spread out to reach
out to a wider customer base.

Paving

the biggest

bank
KFH Bahrain is leading efforts to
establish the biggest ever Islamic bank
in the region by arranging the merger
of three Bahraini Islamic banks.
Abdul Hakim Al-Khayyat, CEO
and Managing Director, KFH Bahrain
explained that once complete, the
merger would result in a banking entity
with a capital of USD400 million and
assets of USD500 million. The merging
operation stems from KFH’s belief
that Islamic banks can lead the global
economy, especially after the recent

KFH has formed

Ali O. Al-Ghannam, Head of

healthcare expenditure both in
absolute terms and as a percentage
of GDP, coupled with increasing
average life spans, were likely to
drive demand for this sector well
into the future. As such it was an
opportune time to invest in this
sector considering that healthcare
