THE MACEDONIAN
November 2007
We Are Inheritors!
The Bible says in Hebrews 12:1, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a
cloud of witnesses, let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us.”
There was a book that I wanted to read and I finally found it hidden in the stacks of Elon
University Library. It was not a new book, but it was a good work. To my surprise I
found that it had never before been checked out of the library. Apparently nobody had
ever thought it was worth reading.
How many other unknown treasures are there in our Christian heritage which have been
forgotten? How poor we may become if our Christian faith is only alert to what is new
and up-to-date.
The writer of Hebrews remembered the strong people of the past. Chapter 11 of
Hebrews is a catalog of the great witnesses to God who had lived long before his day.
The writer knew he was the inheritor of a rich past.
We too are surrounded by witnesses, more than the author of Hebrews knew. Let us
thank God for all who have gone before us. In worship and study, let us enrich our faith.
ALL SAINTS’ SUNDAY is coming up for us on November 4. To delight in the Saints
of God is the way to Heaven. We remember those Saints of Macedonia who have died
since last All Saints’ Sunday. May they continue to rest in His peace and love as they have
now gone ever before us!

We confess our faith is often shallow and weak. Help us, O Lord, to draw strength from

We are bringing to Macedonia an exciting new
ministry, Prayer Shawl Ministry, that is open to
everyone, men as well as women, who would like
to share their knitting and/or crocheting talents with
us. The Prayer Shawl Ministry allows us to create
and craft prayer shawls to be distributed to those
who need to find peace, comfort and warmth
wrapped in God’s arms. If you are interested in
sharing your talents in this rewarding ministry,
please call the church office at 227-5554 or contact
Sandee Jackson at 329-8388 with your name and
number so that we can plan our “get started”
meeting. For those of you
who have not been
blessed with the talents of
knitting or crocheting, you
may also participate with
donations of yarn and of
course we will need your
prayers for the success of
this new ministry.

Middle School Retreat
The NC Synod is sponsoring a middle school retreat
at Camp Caraway in Asheboro on
November 16-17 and 17-18. Cost is $49 per person.
The Fri/Sat event begins at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and
ends Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The Sat/Sun event
follows the same time frame, beginning at 7:00 p.m. on
Saturday and ending Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
This event is for youth in grades 6-8.
Registration closes November 7, so you need to let
Greg know ASAP if you are interested in attending.
Upcoming Events . . .
♦ In October the Luther League made a visit to Twin Lakes
where we made surprise visits on 4 Macedonians. We hope
to do this on a monthly basis, so be on the lookout! We have
our next Twin Lakes visit scheduled for November 18.
♦ Mark your calendar for our annual Progressive Dinner, which
will be Sunday, December 2. We need 3 host families/
homes, one for appetizers, one for the main course and one
for dessert. Let us know if you can host one of the stops.
Elon University Ministry UPDATE!
There have been 4 worship services in Holt Chapel on
campus on Sunday evenings at 6:00 p.m. The first
service had 7 students, and then we've had as many as
18! Add to that the 8-10 adults who come and worship
and provide a meal, and it's quite a nice group of folks!
We covet your prayers that this ministry will continue to
grow and flourish in God's love. Following each worship
service a meal is served to those in attendance; these
meals are being organized and provided by Macedonia
and Holy Comforter Episcopal Churches, with some help
from other Lutheran and Episcopal parishes as well. We
just recently learned that Thrivent Financial for
Lutherans has given this ministry some money to help
feed these young folks.
We are looking for Macedonians to help prepare meals
and see that they are at the Chapel by 6:30 p.m. At this
time "20-25" seems to be the target number for the
question "how much food do we prepare?" To volunteer
to help with the meals, please let Beverly Hiller, Yvonne
White, Joy Rust or the church office know of your
willingness to help and we will get you on the schedule,
sometime between October and May 2008. Macedonia's
first meal was provided by Yvonne White and Beverly
Hiller. Our next meal will be Sunday, November 4.
Please let any of these ladies know if you can help.
These meals can be provided by several families, or by a
ministry group (similar to what we do for a shelter meal).
Let us know if you can help!
“The Inspirations”
"The Inspirations," an auditioned choir consisting of 28
fourth and fifth graders from South Graham Elementary
School, will be on The Good Morning Show (CBS,
Channel 2) as part of the station's 50th anniversary on
Friday, November 2. "At the Hop" and "Rock Around
the Clock" are two of the songs they are working on to
display their singing and dancing talents. They will sing
several times between 6:30 and 8:00 a.m on the morning
news show, which will be live from the Holiday Market
at the Greensboro Coliseum. Our own Joy Rust directs
the group!
"Tips for Survival:
Technology in the Music Classroom"
Joy will also be presenting a 90 minute workshop
entitled "Tips for Survival: Technology in the Music
Classroom" at the NC State Music Educators Inservice
Conference in Winston-Salem November 10-13. Reid
Huffman has been selected as one of 35 high school
students in North Carolina to attend the "Young
Professionals" section of this same conference. A special
program has been set up for these high school musicians
from orchestras, bands and choruses across the state,
including sessions in conducting and preparing for
interviews and auditions. Reid, a senior at the NC School
of Science and Math, is in the middle of applying to
colleges and conservatories, so he really appreciates the
time he will get to spend with the music teachers and
professors leading the workshops, sessions, and
performances. Incidentally, another one of our musicians
will also be at this conference, Susan Rhue, who is a
middle school band director in Asheboro.
Special Music
On Sunday, November 4 we will have a guest violinist at
the 10:30 service. Janis Panzenhagen Puglisi from
Lewisville will be here to enhance our worship. Pastor
and Joy met Janis as a young Luther Leaguer when they
were at Nativity Lutheran Church in Palm Beach
Gardens, Florida; Janis and her sister and parents were
members at Nativity. A few weeks ago they were
reunited with them when they surprised Pastor and
called saying they were "in the area." Janis was (still is)
a serious violinist, and Joy accompanied her for her high
school recital in 1985. We are looking forward to
welcoming Janis and her family to Macedonia in
November.

Greetings brothers and sisters in Christ at Macedonia,
My first semester in seminary is over halfway completed, and I wanted to give you all an
update as to what I have been up to thus far at Duke Divinity School. Seminary is both a challenge
and a blessing, and since Macedonia is a congregation that supports people who wish to enter
ministry in their theological education and formation, I wanted to let you all know what that
formation looks like.
My coursework this semester consists of Church History I, Old Testament I, Intro to biblical
Hebrew, and Intro to the education of Christians. My Church History course seeks to portray the
witness of the church throughout history – as of now, we are not even to the Middle Ages yet! A lot
of reading and writing are required for this course. My Old Testament class is one of two I will be
taking on the Old Testament, and its aim is to understand how Christians can read the Old Testament
– the Hebrew Bible – faithfully. For this class, we read the Old Testament as well as some
secondary material dealing with how the biblical texts were shaped and how they ended up as the
text we have today. These two classes take the form of two lectures a week with 170 students, and
then smaller discussion groups of 14 students each. My Christian Education course seeks to look at
different models of Christian Education to try to find a faithful and theological way to educate the
people of the church. There are many reading and paper assignments for this class as well. The
purpose of the Hebrew class is to teach the ancient Hebrew language so that one can read the
Hebrew Bible (our Old Testament) in the original language. This class requires about twelve hours
of homework per week.
Needless to say, the academic schedule is very rigorous! Yet, part of my formation in
seminary is participation in worship. I am being formed both in the classroom and out of the
classroom – through worship practice, Scripture readings, prayer, and fellowship with other
Christians. But my theological education and formation did not start when I began at Duke Divinity
School. I was formed and educated from a very early age by my church – by participating in
worship, youth group, choir, Sunday School, confirmation, and by learning from the examples of the
faithful people of Macedonia. Your ministry as a congregation was extremely formative in leading
me to seminary, and I thank God for your continued support.
Some of you may be wondering if I am trying to become Methodist – I am at Duke Divinity
School, and Jonathan and I have a field-education church placement at Providence United Methodist
Church. I assure you, I am as Lutheran as ever! But I see my education at Duke Divinity School as
a lesson in ecumenism – a way that I can learn from faithful Christians in other denominations –
something I believe will be very helpful for the church in the future.
As I said before, I thank God for the ministry of Macedonia Lutheran Church. Just as you
were so instrumental in my faith formation, so you are even now supporting, shaping, and molding
others in the faith to carry out the tasks of their vocations faithfully. One way Macedonia has shown
its support for me is through supporting me financially in my seminary education. I am so blessed
to be a part of a congregation that so values the importance of theological education for ministry in
the church. By supporting me you are supporting the ministry of the church at large, and I cannot
express how privileged I feel to be a part of your ministry. Continue to pray for me, as I do for you.
Your prayers and words of encouragement mean a great deal to me as well. May the peace of Christ
be always with you.
In gratitude and love,
Laura Voelkert Weant
HOMECOMING 2007!
Macedonians gathered on September 30 to celebrate another
wonderful Homecoming Day in our church's history! Our guest
pastor for the day was Rev. Dr. Carl Ficken, as well as his family,
including his wife Anne, daughter Catherine, and her husband,
Dwayne Fink, and son, Jacob.
Both children choirs, the
Reformation Ringers and Chancel Choir combined with the
Cathedral Brass and Organist Emeritus Terry Woodings provided
glorious music to the glory of God. Following the covered dish
luncheon the Fickens shared memories with those in attendance.
Sara DeLoache also shared a memory from Sunday School days
that involved the Fickens' son, Mark, and his 3 elephants. It was
wonderful to welcome the Fickens back to Macedonia and
Burlington; they were grateful to return, and we were glad to have
them participate in the yearly tradition we know as Homecoming!

October 23, 2007
Dear Macedonians,
As many of you know, it’s our tradition to collaborate with Holy Comforter Episcopal
Church and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church to provide Christmas presents for Alamance
County children living in foster homes.
For those of you who are new to this project, here’s a brief overview. The children on the
attached list are placed in foster homes for reasons of abuse, neglect, broken homes or parents who
are unable to care for them. Foster care is considered a temporary arrangement until such time as
families can be rehabilitated or until the child can be adopted or placed in a more permanent
situation. Minimal funds for their care are provided by the state, but no money is allotted for toys or
special occasions. Our three churches do our best to fill this void. These children truly need our love
and support.
The children’s wish lists are divided among the three churches. We are responsible for
providing a memorable Christmas for all the children on our list. Please review the enclosed list and
consider providing for one of the children or perhaps you may want to buy one or more items and
combine efforts with another family or group. No gift is too small when given with love.
Remember, this is a “WISH LIST” of things they WANT and like all children, they write them all
down and hope. We do for them as we do for our own—the best we can. It’s important however, to
tell us specifically what you plan to buy so we don’t duplicate efforts.
If you cannot shop, a cash donation is certainly appreciated. Any amount is gratefully
received and will be pooled with other contributions to provide for the children. If you have access
to special items such as socks, stocking stuffers or any items we can use, please let us know.
We ask that you make your selections by Sunday, November 18 and call Vicky Hunley at
584-3407 to confirm your selection. We have a sheet outlining the specifics about labeling, dates
and so forth. Just stop by and see one of us at the angel tree in the Narthex. We’ll be there before
and after the services the next few weeks. Gift Drop Off date by Nov. 30 (church office).
If you have questions, please feel free to call. Please mail checks payable to: “Foster
Children’s Christmas Fund” c/o Vicky Hunley, 406 Neese Drive, Burlington, NC 27215.
Donations are welcome anytime, but requested by December 1.
We are truly thankful for the generosity of our congregation who has supported this ministry
through the years. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Vicky Hunley, Kay Johnson, Connie Poovey & Stephanie Braxton

Honoring Veterans
Gary Kirkbride, LFS Carolinas
Coming home from war can be a difficult experience for veterans. Soldiers who experience combat are often changed in ways that most
civilians cannot comprehend. In a recent study conducted by the University of California, San Francisco and the San Francisco VA Medical
Center, it was found that 31 percent of soldiers returning from Iraq between 2001 and 2005 were diagnosed with mental health and/or
psychosocial challenges. The most common diagnoses include post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorder, adjustment disorder,
depression and substance abuse disorder.
Many soldiers return with war injuries—from lost limbs to blindness to brain damage and countless other disabilities—that can make even
simple, everyday tasks incredibly difficult. Often such injuries make finding and maintaining employment nearly impossible.
Even soldiers who return without health issues frequently find it difficult to return to their “normal” prewar life. They may meet with
misunderstanding and even fear and anger from their friends, families or other civilians. And yet, these are the men and women who have
willingly put their lives on the lie for their country. While civilians may not be able to fully understand what veterans have endured and
sacrificed for their country, you can show them the respect they deserve and accept them with the loving, open arms of Christ.
On November 11, millions of people across the U.S. will celebrate Veteran’s Day. There are many ways you can take part in honoring our
veterans, this day and any other:
Write a veteran a thank you note, or send a letter to an entire Veterans of Foreign War or American Legion post
Write a letter to a soldier currently serving in the Middle East
Talk to your children about who veterans are, what they do and what their service means to our country

Thanksgiving Eve Worship
& Pie Fest
We gather in our sanctuary on
Wednesday, November 21 at 7:00 p.m.
to celebrate Holy Communion.
We ask each family who comes to bring a bag of
groceries to place in front of our sanctuary altar.
All foods will be donated to Loaves and Fishes!
At 8:00 p.m. we gather in Luther Hall after worship
to enjoy our 2nd Annual Thanksgiving Pie Fest.
Every family make your favorite pie or buy one
and bring it. We will have milk and coffee to drink
and cool whip and ice cream to add to your pie.
Come for great pie and super fellowship!
