MARCH 2015
from the BOARD & MANAGEMENT
Dear Members,
Ralph Winer
bog president
Kraig Spina
general
manager
We are moving right through yet another wonderful season, and it
is very exciting to be part of a successful year on all fronts. The new
clubhouse and all of the events taking place continue to be well utilized
by members, family and guests.
We are very proud to announce the promotion of Nick Jolly to
Assistant General Manager. Nick has been a member of the Gleneagles
team since 2000, when he was hired as the Director of Food & Beverage.
In 2001, Nick was promoted to Clubhouse Manager. Originally from
England, Nick has been in the restaurant business for over 30 years. His
experience has included management positions at several private clubs
including The Executive Club, The Roof Gardens and The City Club.
He was General Manager of Dempsey’s in Palm Beach, and Owner/
Manager of Rockwell’s in West Palm Beach.
The North Gate renovation project continues to move forward. By
the end of February, the construction of the building, roof, and exterior
paint should be approaching completion. At that time, we will begin
demolition of the existing exterior walls and landscaping in preparation
for construction of the new entrance along Atlantic Avenue.
Thank you to all the members that attended the Meet the Candidates
Night as well as those that returned their Board of Governors Election
Ballots. The Annual Membership Meeting will take place on February 24
at 8:00 pm. The new board will be introduced and immediately following,
the Board will elect officers. Committee applications will be mailed out
March 4 and the deadline to return them is March 16. The committees
are a valuable resource to the Board of Governors, Leadership Staff and
as Member Representatives. We strongly encourage you to consider
submitting an application to serve on one of the Committees this year.
Our Real Estate sales are continuing in a very positive direction with
28 home sales in November, December and January which is closely
approaching our sales from the record year we experienced in 2014.
We encourage all of our members to introduce yourselves to these
newcomers and welcome them to the club.
A survey will be forthcoming in the next few weeks in order to gather
member’s thoughts and input as it relates to the new club amenities and
activities. We appreciate your participation in this survey.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many Board
Members and Committee Members who served our club in the past
year. We also send our congratulations to the newly elected Board of
Governors and newly appointed committee members who will be
guiding our club through the next year.
Respectfully yours,
Ralph Winer, President
Kraig Spina, General Manager

club NEWS
It seems like we just opened our new clubhouse, and
here we are talking about March already. Every season
seems to fly by faster than the last one! We are already
into our busiest month, so get ready for some fun.
The Veranda is proving to be a big hit with the
membership. Along with Thursday and Friday lunch, we
are adding a BBQ lunch on Saturdays on The Veranda
with hot dogs, burgers, chicken breasts, and all the sides.
We are also adding two Music Under the Stars dinners
Nick Jolly
on Saturday, March 7 and Friday, March 20.
assistant
Tuesday, March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day, so of course general manager
we will be offering our very Irish buffet with all your
favorites including Prime Rib, Lamb Stew and soda bread along with
Grasshopper pie! And we will throw in a couple of real live Irish servers
to take care of you.
On Sunday, March 20, we have a Wine Social on The Veranda, a
perfect evening to sample some excellent wines and great food in a
wonderful outdoor setting. This is our first Wine Social, so please make
your reservations early for this one.
Saturday, March 21, there will be piano music in the Lounge, and we
hope you will join us to relax after dinner and enjoy the music. Our Eagles
Have Flown party will take place on Friday and Saturday, March 27 and
28 with an Aqua theme. Now this is sure to be a sellout but do not worry,
we have plenty of room for all. Everyone has been asking for our Sunday
Night Prime Rib Buffet so we will be hosting one on Sunday, March 29 to
round out a very busy month!
Passover lottery slips are due by Tuesday, March 3. Please get your
slips in early so we can try to accommodate all of your requests.
Mr. Moore and his family have kindly offered to conduct the service
in the Legends Dining Room and welcome any members who would
like to assist and participate alongside them; Mr. Bachner will conduct
the service in the Waterfall Room. We are truly very grateful to both
parties for helping make Passover such a memorable event each year.
Dinner begins at 6:00 pm in the Waterfall Room, and 6:30 pm in the
Legends Dining Room. Please remind your guests that jackets and ties
are required for all gentlemen over age 13.
Last, we would like to thank the Food and Beverage committee for
their support and suggestions throughout the year that have helped
make this such a successful season. As always, we welcome your feedback
and you can contact me at [email protected]. Cheers! Nick

March 2015
director of golf
We are already moving into the month of March, and we have
had some great events so far this season with record participation.
One of the things I love most about Gleneagles is that we are all
part of a club where the members really enjoy playing golf! It is
exciting to see the number of players joining the events and most of
all, having fun and meeting new friends. This season we have seen
many new members and new friendships take place! It is so nice to
be a part of this community of golfers.
We want to thank our Director of Golf Course Maintenance,
Jason Bagwell, and his team as they continue to give us great
playing conditions throughout the season. We have experienced
some stretches of cool weather which does does affect the growing
conditions, but thanks to our team, we have not seen any changes to
the condition on the courses.
2015 was a great year for Play for P.I.N.K. as they reached a
collective $1 million raised since Play for P.I.N.K.’s inception at
Gleneagles. We want to thank the Play for P.I.N.K. committee for
their great efforts on a successful event to benefit the Breast Cancer
Research Foundation. We also wish to congratulate the Men’s
League for starting their own Play for P.I.N.K. day and experiencing
a very successful turnout.
As we move into the month of March, we are getting ready for
our Men’s & Ladies’ Member-Guest tournaments, which are always
special events for our members. Applications are available in the
golf shop. Please submit your application early.
As always, please stop by if you need anything. Let’s continue to
enjoy the rest of a great season here at Gleneagles!
We all know that it is not
always easy to get out of a
bunker. Whether it is a fairway
shot or a green-side bunker,
we are never really 100%
confident in this shot... Why?
When we get in the bunker,
we feel like we need to try and
lift the ball out. It is actually
almost the opposite as we
need to create a steeper swing
like the letter V. This angle
will help you get the ball out,
but do not forget the follow
through as this is what lifts
the ball out of the bunker.
Which club should we use in
the bunker? The sand wedge
has the most loft, which really
helps get the ball out with the
steeper swing. I do see some
people who prefer to putt out
of the bunker, which makes
it more difficult to judge the
distance as you will have less
control. In terms of numbers,
the putter has approximately 3
to 4 degrees of loft versus the
sand wedge, which usually has
60 degrees.
Stop in the shop with any
questions. We love to help you
drive your scores lower! – Joe

This season has been a wonderful one! Play for P.I.N.K. was
a fabulous event, Demo Day was a great success, and the junior
weeks have had excellent turnouts. As we approach March, keep
an eye out for the new merchandise coming in the shop daily.
Vendors such as Nike, Adidas, Jamie Sadock, Callaway, and many
more will continue to arrive through the end of season. Anytime
you see a product not available in your size, please feel free to
contact the golf shop staff to place a special order. Special orders
usually take 3-5 business days to arrive. I have enjoyed getting
to know everyone and working for such a fabulous club. I look
forward to another great month!

The Hip Flexion Society
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday KAREN MIKUS fitness supervisor
Are you a member of the Hip Flexion Society?
Do you use a computer? Do you watch TV? Do you read? Do you play
cards? Do you go to the movies?
If you answered yes to some of the above questions , you are a member of
the hip flexion society.
A relaxed hip flexion position is defined as relaxed because the hip flexor
muscles are not working against resistance (contracting) – they are merely
in a flexed state, with the full weight of the torso above seated into the pelvic
floor, and the lower extremities inactive. It is a position which, if held too
long, will inhibit circulation, muscle conditioning, and even nerve response.
It can be a direct cause of lower back, psoas and sciatic issues; the hip flexors
begin to shorten and weaken, and over time create a myriad of problems.
Here are some common sense approaches to minimize the amount of
time sitting:
• Get up every hour and stretch in all directions.
• Design a computer space where you can stand while working.
• Stretch the body out while reading or watching TV.
• Go for a quick walk between TV shows or in between card games.
• Plan physical activity directly after prolonged sitting.
• Play video games that involve body movement.
Sit less, move more!

At the Bridge Table by art goldman A Balancing Act
♠ ♥
What does it mean to balance in an auction? Any time a bid is followed by
two passes, the player next to bid is said to be in the balancing position. That
player must decide whether to allow the opponents to play the hand or to take
some action. It is not usually in your interest to have the opponents declare a
♦ ♣
low level contract. The fact that they are willing to play at the one or two level
indicates that your side probably has about half the high card points.
Some bids in the balancing position have a different meaning then they
would have in other circumstances. If the bidding is 1 heart, pass, pass, and
you hold ♠-J97 ♥-A1094 ♦-K98 ♣-A86 what do you do? You are too strong to pass and a
double is not appealing. The proper call is one no-trump. This shows 11 to 14 points in
the balancing position. If you should hold a similar hand with 15 or more points you must
double first and show your strength later.
At a recent Tuesday night duplicate I found myself holding ♠-964 ♥-K4 ♦-A842 ♣-K875 when
the bidding, starting with my left hand opponent, was 1club, pass, 1heart,pass 1no-trump, pass,
pass, ? Following my own advice I felt I had to balance and bid 2 diamonds! This was passed out
and with a little help from my opponents I made nine tricks for a score of plus 110. This was
good for 6 matchpoints out of 7. My partner’s hand was ♠-K82 ♥-QJ32 ♦-QJ63 ♣-43.
It’s hard to believe but our club championship will be held this month and the season
will come to an end. All of our bridge activities have grown this season and we thank you all
for your participation. If you are going North we wish you a good summer; if you stay here
our duplicate games and Sunday night social bridge continue without pause.
I hope to see all of you “AT THE TABLE”!

Computer Club News by ...
Is it March already? The season is not over but where did the time go? The
Computer Club appreciated being invited to participate and had a great time
at the first Gleneagles Lifestyle Expo on January 30. It was a wonderful event
with good community participation. If you did not get a stylus to help you text
on your touch device, ask at your next workshop, compliments of the
Computer Club.
Monday, March 16 at 3:00 pm in the Strathearn Satellite a group of
our very knowledgeable instructors will present their specialty. The program will include
Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android with the focus on what their workshops can do
for your enjoyment with your digital device. Always a fun program. Our web site http://
GleneaglesComputer.org has a complete list of workshop descriptions and schedules. You can
register on our calendar page with a few clicks.
There is another area of Internet security that is equally critical and where we all
should start – passwords. Use strong passwords that contain upper and lower case letters,
numbers and special characters (@ # ! &). No, I’m not swearing, just being cautious and
careful about my information. For example, “Hw@bgws#6” is more than 8 characters and
would be a strong password. It was derived from a phrase you are able to remember easily.
“Helen Was A Beautiful Girl When She Was 6”. What we often see are WEAK passwords
like “Victory7667” or “16097” or “may171945” all of which leave your information open to
others, and should be replaced at once.
Never write your passwords down, but keep them in a password protected digital file
designed especially for that purpose. Google “Password Protection” and you’ll find a
number of free programs such as “PasswordSafe”. Download one, install and have a secure
easy to use password file. You need only to remember the key word for the master file which
stores all your other passwords securely encrypted. Apple users should look at the iTunes
site for an app. Good examples are “Dashlane” and “1Password”. Protecting your data, bank
accounts, and personal files is important. You’ll be very glad you did this.
Happy Computing!

Yellow Dot Program
by rick white, director of security
On Monday, December 1, 2014, Palm
Beach County Fire and Rescue held a press
conference to announce the launch of the
new PBC Yellow Dot program.
The PBC Yellow Dot sticker is a visual
clue to First Responders to let them know
that important medical information about you
is located in the glove box. This lets First Responders
know how to treat you appropriately based upon your medicines and
conditions. This is especially important if you are unconscious after an
accident or unable to communicate clearly.
Typically, First Responders would ask you questions about medical
conditions or medications you are taking when responding to an
emergency. Depending on the severity of the vehicle accident, they may
not be able to do that.
The PBC Yellow Dot Program will speak for you when you can’t speak
for yourself.
This is a free public safety program available to all Palm Beach County
residents. Yellow Dot Packets may be obtained from Security, Fitness and
the Concierge Desk. After you fill out all of your medical information on
the yellow card and put the card in your glove box, you can then stick
the signature Yellow Dot sticker on the back driver’s side window of your
car.
If you have any questions feel free to call me, Major Rick White,
Security Director, at 561-860-8707.

Marching On!
ALI HALL social activities manager
We are marching into March without skipping a
beat here at Gleneagles! Our live lecture this month
will focus on the Golden Years of Elvis at 7:30 pm on
March 4. March 5 will feature Sid Parker and pals
for Jazz Under the Stars on the Veranda. This event
is new this year and is much like our debut event
of Rum & Reggae that features a special drink of
the evening with entertainment. The event starts
at 7:30 pm and is going to be a wonderful evening
of jazz, atmosphere and mingling with friends.
SOCIAL
ACTIVITIES
Robert and Mary France will entertain us for a
& BRIDGE
Lounge Show on March 11. Saturday, March 14,
498-3606 x134 make sure not to forget your boots and cowboy hats
for our “Don’t Rock the Jukebox” Dinner Dance.
It will be a country theme night, but with all of your favorite dance hits
with some classic rock too. There will be something for everyone who
enjoys dancing, food and entertainment! Bravo Amici is back by popular
demand on March 18 with an entirely different show to keep you in awe
of their musical talents. Michael Masci is back in the lounge on March 21
to play piano for everyone from 6:00 - 9:00 pm. No reservations necessary.
Rounding out the month is our Eagles Have Flown: Aqua. This modern
interpretation of an Under the Sea theme is a chic and fun way to feature
the new club’s famous water features and carry the theme throughout the
party. The décor will be exquisite with food and music to match as the club
favorite Will Bridges brings his whole band to help dance the night away
into the deep.
In January, we had our fabulous annual Bridge Swiss Teams Event.
Many thanks to Marjorie Weil and the Bridge Committee for the hard
work and dedication to have such a wonderful evening. Congratulations
to the Champions: Claire Belfer, Gloria Landman, Shirley Presant,
and Flo Shayne; and the Runners Up: Beverly Shapiro, Ernie Shapiro,
Richard Lorie, Gerry Posen, Bea Silvers, Irene Silver, Linda Roth and Jan
Nash. Congratulations and best wishes to all of you in all of your future
games!
