“And now we welcome the new year,
full of things that have never been”

JANUARY 2015
from the BOARD & MANAGEMENT
Dear Members,
Ralph Winer
bog president
Kraig Spina
general
manager
2015 is sure to be an exciting year for our Members, Family and
Guests! We opened the Clubhouse on Thanksgiving Day, and just
four days later, we hosted nearly 900 members for the Grand Opening
celebration. The New Year will bring many new ways to enjoy the new
Clubhouse, we promise to keep you busy!
We extend a warm welcome to the many New Members and New
Renters who are calling Gleneagles home for this first time this winter.
We hope to see you at the events around the Club!
We are delighted to share good news regarding Dining Guest Fees.
Effective December 1, 2014, Dining Guest Fees have been eliminated
for all meal periods. We hope that our members will take advantage of
this opportunity to bring friends and family to dine in our beautiful new
Clubhouse in the upcoming season!
The Board of Governors Election scheduled for February 2015 will
be held to fill six open seats. In large measure, the future of our Club
is tied to the quality of our leadership and it is therefore imperative
that the six members to be elected to this year’s board possess the skill,
judgment and maturity to guide the Club going forward. A Meet the
Candidates night is scheduled for Monday, January 19 at 7:30 pm in the
Legends Dining Room. All members are urged to attend this important
meeting to ask relevant questions of the candidates.
The North Gate Renovation project continues to move forward on
schedule. Thank you for your continued patience as we complete this
project in the next few months.
We hope that you will take time this season to join us at one of our
Roundtable meetings. Some of the topics that we will cover are the
financial performance of the club, real estate sales and what it means
to our Gleneagles community. Both select Board Members and Staff
will attend these meetings to answer any question that you may have.
Contact Varto Hairanian at 498-3606 ext. 131 or [email protected]
to inquire about the next available meeting.
We look forward to ringing in the New Year with many of you at our
New Year’s Eve Diamonds and Pearls Gala!
To all of our Gleneagles family, the Board of Governors and
Management staff, we wish each of you a most healthy, happy and
prosperous New Year.
Respectfully yours,
Ralph Winer, President

Just a short drive from Gleneagles, you will find two beautiful county
parks, Wakodahatchee Wetlands and Green Cay. The Wakodahatchee
Wetlands has a three quarter mile boardwalk that winds through three of
the wetland’s ponds allowing visitors the opportunity to read interpretive
signs and learn about water purifications. The wetlands have attracted
an abundant variety of wildlife including turtles, frogs, alligators and
birds. Green Cay Nature Center is the county's newest nature center that
overlooks 100 acres of constructed wetland and provides educational
opportunities about this unique habitat. The wetland features 1.5 miles of
elevated boardwalk featuring interpretive signs about the habitat, and live
animals in an extensive exhibit room that highlights wetland attributes.
Enjoy the beautiful outdoors in Florida, that’s why we all live here!

Happy New Year! The season is definitely in full swing, and
the tournament participation has been over the top! From
Mixed Couples events to Majors, it is great to see the activity and
camaraderie among the players at all of the events. We hope that
you joined us for our first demo day of the season on December 19!
It is always a lot of fun to see and test the new equipment. Save the
date for the next one on February 27!
In early December, we installed a new fleet of golf carts. They are
a beautiful new green color to give the fleet a totally unique look,
the perfect complement to your new clubhouse!
Thank you for taking care of your courses from cart traffic to
filling the divots, raking the bunkers, and keeping pace of play.
Hopefully our weather continues to cooperate and keeps the season
moving strong. Please know that if you have any questions on rules
or regulations, you can refer to your Rules & Regulations booklet
or stop in the golf shop for assistance. Your golf experience is really
important to us, so if you have any questions or ideas for future
events, please let us know. Keep hitting it forward and keep your
head down, most of all have fun!
pro golf tip
Tournament time is always
the time that we want to play
our best golf. Typically, those
rounds come with a little more
pressure, and most often, it
comes from ourselves! When
we tee it up a little nervous,
we feel tighter in the grip and
the arms. It is important to
remember to loosen up and let
go of the tension.
Keeping positive thoughts
in your head throughout the
round is the key. Sometimes a
little practice swing, a thought
of the last time you hit that
good shot, or that last putt
that went in the hole are all
that it takes to loosen up.
Take it ‘one shot at a
time’, and don’t get ahead
of yourself. As they say, stay
within the moment and take a
breath. Remember, we are all
here to play recreational golf
and make it a fun part of our
life. Keep smiling and finish
that swing no matter what!
Don’t ever give up, there is
always another day! Have fun
out there! – Joe

MIKE PUC, uspta director of tennis & fitness
I attended a very informative Gleneagles
Healthy Living Lectures Series last November
provided by the Fitness Department. (These are
great complimentary lectures on various health
topics available to all members – check the
schedule available in Fitness). Dr. Nick Kusturic
spoke on “Breathing Techniques” as a window
to better health, inner calm and stress relief. He
referenced ancient fitness disciplines such as Tai
TENNIS
Chi and Yoga that use controlled breathing to
PRO SHOP

enhance performance.
I thought of the breathing methods we teach in
Monday - Friday
tennis. Young junior tennis players are taught at an
7:30 am - 4:00 pm
early age to expend air and energy by breathing
Saturday, Sunday out every time they strike the ball. This sometimes
translates into annoying grunts and screams even
& Holidays
at the highest level that I do not endorse, but every
7:30 am - 2:00 pm
club player should aspire to breathe out while
hitting as a positive technique to relaxation and
proper stroking. Holding your breath when striking the ball creates
tension in the muscles that control the racquet and tension in large
muscle groups resulting in forced, unnatural swings. If you are extra
winded after a long point it may be that your breathing is not connected
with your hits.
Golfers can appreciate that their shots are longer and more controlled
when they have a relaxed fluid swing and breathe out on contact. Hockey
players breathe when they shoot the puck, pitchers, basketball players
and quarterbacks breathe when they throw the ball and tennis players
should breathe when they hit the ball. This does not mean you only
breathe out when you hit but you should time your breathing to occur
every single time on contact. Try saying a word like “swoosh” or “hit” on
contact. You will be amazed at the effortless results and your recovery
time between points will improve!
The PlayMate Smash ball machine with revolutionary iPlayMate
computer technology on board allows the Pro Shop to program our iPad
with pre set drills so you will never have to program a shot selection on
the machine again. The machine can create any sequence of balls in
the same drill including drop shots and lobs for a total tennis fitness
work out. This new machine coupled with the automated ball machine
PickupWall retrieval system that returns balls back to the machine results
in virtually continuous play. The ball machine is complimentary after
11:00 am by calling the Pro Shop the day of use.
Be sure to mark your Tennis Handbooks and read the event
descriptions to save the dates of activities of interest. Resident Tennis
members who do not play are always encouraged to register for the
dining portion of events so you may catch up with all the tennis news.
The Pep Rally, Season Opener, Color War, and Comp Breakfast are
all great examples of these opportunities. Many of these events are
complimentary.

Is Tai Chi for You?
/ KAREN MIKUS fitness supervisor
If you would like to improve your
balance, relieve stress, enhance mental
capacity and concentration, reduce
blood pressure, reduce bone loss,
help with arthritis pain, improve lower
body and leg strength, accumulate
energy by releasing endorphins rather
than depleting it and promote deep breathing, then Tai
Chi is for you. One of the best things about tai chi is its
adaptability to every age and fitness level.
The balance factor alone should be filling up Tai Chi
classes. Tai chi helps improve balance because it targets
all the physical components needed to stay upright—leg
strength, flexibility, range of motion, and reflexes—all of
which tend to decline with age.
Interestingly, one of tai chi’s biggest benefits to stability
isn’t physical—but emotional. Tai chi also makes you more
aware of both your internal body and the external world,
giving you a better sense of your position in space, so you
won’t be as likely to trip and fall if you try to simultaneously
talk to a friend and navigate a busy sidewalk.
The Gleneagles Fitness Center offers an excellent Tai
Chi class on Mondays from 3:00 to 4:00 pm. We have many
members who would benefit from Tai Chi. If you do not
attend our class because you are unable to attend at the
established time, please give us a call (495-2806) so we
might consider a new time depending on the number of
members who are interested.

One of our regular duplicate players approached me and complained that
whenever the bidding went one spade-two spades-three spades, if she passed,
her partner made four, but if she bid four spades, her partner went down one
(or more). I understood her complaint as I never liked that bidding sequence.
♦ ♣
Many experienced players prefer a method known as “help suit game tries.”
After one spade-two spades the opening bidder bids a suit in which she needs
help. i.e. Holding ♠KQ974, ♥5, ♦A865,♣AQ2, opener bids three diamonds.
Responder holding ♠A852, ♥843, ♦42, ♣K986 can risk four spades knowing
that partner can trump one or more diamond losers in dummy. Holding
♠A852, ♥K98, ♦974, ♣J87, one point more, responder should just pass three spades.
What are good holdings in the suit for which opener seeks help? Any singleton or
doubleton, especially when holding four trumps, Kx(x), and any holding of five or more
cards. Using this method it is not just a matter of high card points.
As I write this article, our duplicate games are filling the Strathearn satellite to capacity.
As you read this, our games are back in the main clubhouse, our social bridge for both men
and ladies are underway and Sunday evening social bridge is back in the clubhouse with
Sid Meyers as our host. January will see the start of Keith Hanson’s lesson series. Watch the
Bridge Bulletin Boards and The Week-at-a-Glance for registration information.
Our Duplicate players will be able to play in the Bernard Grand Memorial Swiss Teams
this January in a revised format.
The American Contract Bridge League (acbl.org) is a great source of bridge news and
information for all players. The ACBL has a campaign underway entitled Play Nice. Whether
you play duplicate or social bridge the game will be much more enjoyable if there is less
(no) criticism of partner or opponents. Try it, you will like it!
That’s all for now. I hope to see you all at the table.

the much advanced users of both PC’s and handheld devices. Workshops
at the Lomond Hills computer center continue to be outstanding,
covering all the facets of today’s digital needs. Schedules are available on our website
http://GleneaglesComputer.org, in the Breezeway, and are listed in the Gleneagles “Week at
a Glance” emails. Workshop descriptions are posted on the website. The computer center
is maintained and Workshops are taught by our wonderful volunteer members, who invite
you to join them.
Start the New Year by attending our January meeting. Our resident experts will show you
how to enjoy many more features of your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone. Everyone is welcome
at Strathearn at 3:00 pm on Monday, January 19, so don’t miss it. The digital world is changing
every day with newer and more advanced features and operating systems for both the handheld
phones and PC’s. Keep yourself up to date by attending our Meetings, our Workshops and Help
Days. For assistance anytime, call our Help Line 637-1231 or visit our website.
We recently were cleaning out the computer club storage room and found the original
club computer which had been built by Donald Nadler, Marty Hande and Donald Stern in
the fall of 1995, using parts they purchased from an “import warehouse” near the Miami
Airport. Strange, it still runs and looks like a system you can buy today, except for the floppy
disk drive. They installed Windows 98 operating system, an upgrade from the DOS they
started with. If only that computer could talk, as it’s lived through a vast technical growth
from DOS and Windows 3.1 to present apps or tiles (as shortcuts) and the Cloud. This
original system never saw the Cloud and thought the Internet was a dial-up bulletin board.
Time flies when you’re having fun! We’re the WiFi generation for sure!

Roadway Safety
by rick white, director of security
Safety is something that drivers should keep in mind at all times. After
all, when you are operating a motorized vehicle, you have a responsibility
to do your part to keep the roadways safe for yourself, other drivers,
passengers, and others who may be affected by traffic accidents.
1. Stay Alert: Actively pay attention to your actions and those of the
drivers around you when you are driving.
2. Use Turn Signals: Always use your turn signals in advance of making
a lane change or turning.
3. Buckle Up: Wearing your seat belt is an essential safety tip for drivers.
Deepest Condolences
To the family and friends of
Beverly Lazarus
Marvin Pollow
Rose Samel
And to our members
Sherry Matzner & family on the
loss of their mother, Louise Assa
Roy & Hermene Schrager on the
loss of their son, Rick
A Note of Thanks
The following people would like to
express their thanks to everyone for their
cards, calls, prayers and kind deeds:
Stanley & Susan Blacker
Thelma Epstein
Nancy & Shelly Goodman
Howard & Florence Schiffer
To place a Condolence, Thank You,
or Get Well message in the Eagle, contact
Ana King at 561-498-3606 ext. 142
or fill out a form at the Front Desk.
4. Follow Traffic Signals: Pay close attention to and obey stop signs and
traffic lights.
5. Respect Yellow Lights: Remember that the intent of a yellow light is
to notify drivers to slow down and prepare to stop. A yellow traffic
signal should not be viewed as a sign to step on the gas to rush
through an intersection before the light turns red.
6. Obey Speed Limits: When driving, it’s important to stick to the
posted speed limit at all times.
7. Adjust for Weather: When the weather is less than perfect, such as
rainy, snowy, or foggy conditions, use extra precautions when driving
and follow guidelines for staying safe in the particular situation you
are facing.
8. Be Predictable: Don’t make sudden stops or lane changes. Instead,
take care to ensure that other drivers are likely to be able to predict
your actions to maximize safety.
9. Never Drive Under the Influence: It’s essential to avoid operating a
vehicle if you have been drinking, taking certain types of prescription
or non-prescription drugs, or are otherwise impaired.
10. Yield Right of Way: When other drivers has the right of way, be sure
to yield to them. Also, don’t make the mistake of assuming that
everyone else will yield to you when they should. Regardless of who
has the right to go, yield if it seems that the other driver may not be
observing standard practices for yielding.
11. Know Where You Are Going: Plan your travel route ahead of time
so that you aren't struggling to figure out where to go while you are
operating a motorized vehicle.
12. Avoid Distractions: Sending text messages isn’t the only dangerous
distraction that drivers need to avoid while operating a vehicle.
Changing CDs, using cell phones, eating, and interacting with
passengers are just a few examples of the types of distractions that
you should take care to avoid when driving.
13. Use Headlights: Headlights aren’t just necessary at night. When you
are driving in the rain or fog, turning on your headlights can play an
important role in keeping you and those around you safe on the road.
Mah Jongg & Canasta Get Together
14. Share the Road: Remember that you are not the only driver on the
road. All drivers deserve to be treated with respect.
If you are interested in finding a Mah Jongg or
Canasta game, be sure to attend our Mah Jongg &
Canasta Players Get-Together. Contact Kristen Laraia
at 637-1201 for more information.
15. Proper Vehicle Maintenance: Take care to ensure that your
automobile stays in good working condition. This includes keeping
fluids topped off, performing schedule engine maintenance, making
certain tires have plenty of air, and ensuring that the vehicle’s
exterior lights are functional at all times.
