HOUSE

Supervision, supervision, supervision!
Marking Behaviour

up a routine and stick to it. The
established routine will help your
Scent is the sense that allows your
dog to gather the most
information about their world.
Urine offers the most
concentrated source of scent - so
it is natural for a dog to leave
urine markings to communicate
who they are and where they’re
going. If allowed, both males and
females will mark. The best time
to interrupt this behaviour is
when your puppy is young. If you
notice your puppy marking, you
can interrupt with your voice,
leash or touch.
puppy recognize boundaries and expectations
around elimination. Our dogs instinctually
don’t want to eliminate where they live, sleep
and eat, so we can work with that instinct to
solidify regular house training habits.
Remember the following tips when
house training:
• Bring your puppy outside immediately or up
to 20 minutes after each meal
• Bring your puppy outside after naps or long
play sessions
• Bring your puppy to the same general
outdoor area
Marking can easily grow into a
habit making it frustrating in the
future. Your dog becomes
distracted easily, falls behind on
the walk, or marks where it’s
inappropriate (in a store,
someone’s couch, your garden,
neighbour’s lawn, etc.). Interrupt
marking early on to ensure that it
does not become a habit.

• Supervise your puppy closely (crate, handsfree, tie your puppy to something durable
or physically watch them)
• Be consistent! Your puppy doesn’t
understand if it’s a weekend or a holiday!
• If an accident happens, clean it with an
odour-neutralizing formula and do not
punish your puppy
• If you catch your puppy in the act of
eliminating where they shouldn’t, use a
sharp verbal interruption and take them
outside immediately
• Remove access to food and water at least
three hours before bed time
• Ensure that you are not catering to your
puppy’s whining during the night. Set your
alarm so that you are waking up and letting
them outside before they wake you up!
