What is Estate Planning?
Believe it or not, you have an estate. In fact, nearly everyone does. Your estate is comprised of everything you own—
your car, home, other real estate, checking and savings accounts, investments, life insurance, furniture, personal possessions. No matter how large or how modest, everyone has an
estate.
Estate planning is making a plan in advance and naming whom
you want to receive the things you own after you are gone.
However, good estate planning is much more than that. It
should also:
 Include instructions for passing on your values (religion,
education, hard work, etc.) in addition to your valuables.





Include instructions for your care if you become disabled.
Name a guardian and an inheritance manager for minor
children.
Provide for family members with special needs without disrupting government benefits.
Include life insurance to provide for your family after your
death, disability income insurance to replace your income if
you cannot work due to illness or injury, and long-term care
insurance to help pay for your care in case of an extended
illness or injury.
Provide for the transfer of your business at your retirement,
disability, or death.


Minimize taxes, court costs, and unnecessary legal fees.
Be an ongoing process; not a one-time event. Your plan
should be reviewed and updated as your family and financial situations (and laws) change over your lifetime.
Estate planning is for everyone.
It is not just for “retired” people, although people do
tend to think about it more as they age. Unfortunately, we can’t
successfully predict how long we will live and illness and accidents happen to people of all ages.
Estate planning is not just for “the wealthy,” although
people who have amassed some wealth often think more about
how to preserve it. Good estate planning often means more to
families with modest assets because they can afford to lose the
least.
Too many people don’t plan.
Individuals put off estate planning because they think
they don’t own enough, they’re not old enough, they’re too
busy, think they have plenty of time, they’re confused and don’t
know who can help them, or they just don’t want to think about
it.
The best time to plan your estate is now.
None of us really likes to think about our own mortality
or the possibility of being unable to make decisions for ourselves. This is exactly why so many families are caught offguard and unprepared. Don’t wait. You can put something in
place now and change it later…which is exactly the way estate
planning should be done.

St. Margaret’s Spring Weekend at Shrine Mont
May 1-3, 2015
You are invited to St. Margaret’s friends and families
Annual Retreat (May 1-3, 2015) at Shrine Mont in Orkney
Springs, Virginia, nestled among the trees at the foot of Great
North Mountain in the Shenandoah Valley about two hours
from Woodbridge.
Be Still and Know... Mindfulness in the Mountains
and Fun with friends and families.
Shrine Mont is a place where people are more important than
things; where prayer and reflection, rest and recreation are
more important than appointments and tasks. Shrine Mont is
where we connect as a community and
finally have time to meet each other,
laugh together, and share stories of difficult commutes and ….set life down for
awhile. Shrine Mont is a place where
kids play out in God’s own creation and
we all give thanks for streams and flowers and ponds full of fish. Shrine Mont
is marshmallows and memories- a place
where we celebrate being part of the family of God. One of our young participants
last year told her mom, "When I have kids
I hope they still have Shrine Mont so I can
take them there".
We had a fantastic time last
year! Fun for all, and the fellowship is fantastic with some
optional planned events for the whole
group, plenty of rocking chairs and solitude to read in the beautiful surroundings, great walking trail, outdoor labyrinth, and camp fire. Church was celebrated Sunday morning outdoors in the
stone Cathedral of the transfiguration.
Please sign up on the list on
the bulletin board near the church office. Copies of the details are available on the bulletin board. (If necessary, changes to your schedule will be
accommodated.)
Questions: please check with Marty
Fowler, 703 407-1318, or via e-mail:
[email protected].
If you want to come for the day, not staying overnight, but to
enjoy fellowship with the group and visit Shrine Mont, you
might want to come up on Saturday for lunch (12:30pm) and
the afternoon, and for the evening meal (5:30pm). We would
need to know your plans before hand to notify the staff, and
then you would just pay for the meals.

Hand in Hand Listening Sessions
In his pastoral address to Annual Council on January 22, the Rt. Rev. Shannon S. Johnston announced a new
racial reconciliation initiative for 2015:
“Surely, as communities of faith we as a diocese are especially suited, and divinely charged, to be facilitators of reconciliation, both within our own walls and in the broader community. Therefore, I am now announcing a major initiative for this
year of 2015 that will focus on gaining a better understanding
of rising racial tensions. We will begin this effort by holding a
series of listening sessions in the mid-year around our diocese.
These sessions will be the same Indaba style gatherings that
were so successfully used here a few years ago to address tensions and divisions regarding the Church’s ministry in the
quickly evolving matter of human sexuality. Indaba listening
sessions involve no debate, no cross-talk, but rather give every
person present the opportunity to speak their hearts and minds
in a safe, non-reactive environment.”
Bishop Shannon stressed the importance of having
as many parishioners throughout the Diocese of Virginia
attend the listening sessions as possible. The Diocese office has announced that the first three listening sessions
will take place in late April in Northern Virginia, Fredericksburg and Richmond. The dates are:
Thursday, April 16: Epiphany, Richmond, 7-8:30 p.m.
Saturday, April 18: Trinity, Fredericksburg, 10-11:30
a.m.
Thursday, April 23: The Falls Church, Falls Church,
7:30-9 p.m.
The Hand-in-Hand Listening Sessions are open to all
members of the Diocese. Additional information
will be posted on the Diocese website,
www.thediocese.net. Additional sessions for the
eastern and western parts of the Diocese will be
scheduled for fall 2015.
Bishop Shannon hopes to gather a group representing as
many viewpoints as possible. It is our hope that members
of St. Margaret’s will be able to participate.

SPRING BOOK FAIR – A SUCCESS STORY
“Books are a uniquely
portable magic.” –
Stephen King. During
the Spring Book Fair,
our Marylou’s Readers Program brought
“magic” to 79 students
at King (44) and
Vaughan (35) Elementary Schools. We
bought books for students who would not otherwise be able to select and purchase a book during the Fair. This program introduces Kindergartners to the colorful pages and first words of easy to
read stories, 1st through 3rd graders start to enjoy how a story develops and can’t wait to learn what happens to a favorite character. Fourth and fifth graders have arrived at the
sheer joy of learning facts and increasing their knowledge
about a favorite subject. Students express their happiness
when selecting their own book and teachers express their
appreciation for such a program. We have a small budget to
support both a Spring and Fall Book Fair at these two
schools; however, additional donations are always welcomed
so we can reach even more students. If you would like to be
part of bringing this gift to deserving students, you may
write a check to StMEC and place Marylou’s Readers on the
memo line. If you would like to know more about the program or volunteer during a Book Fair contact: Suzanne Lawton at [email protected] or we can chat sometime during a coffee hour after service. Your continued support is
very much appreciated.
Service Ministry
Four lay pastoral caregivers meet monthly
to nurture spirituality and build community. We want to celebrate St Margaret's joys
and share it's sorrows. Please let us know
how we can walk with you. If you need
some one to listen and walk with you,
please speak with Rev. Kathy or Jean Reynolds.
MONTHLY READINGS - YEAR B
Thank You for Supporting Hilda Barg!
Thank you to all who served, cooked, donated
food or money and prayed for our recent Hilda Barg
Homeless Shelter service. Everything was greatly appreciated and you know you are a hit when the shelter residents ask if we are volunteering all week because we are
so nice and our food is very good!
There is nothing sweeter than the soft voice of a
child thanking God for the meal she was about to receive.
The smiles, hugs, teamwork, excellent food and simply
breaking bread together make for an uplifting couple of
hours.
If you have not had the opportunity to volunteer
at Hilda Barg, please try and do so. We can guarantee
that knowing the shelter residents, adults and children,
are not going to bed hungry on that night will leave you
with a sense of purpose and joy. For the small amount of
time necessary to support this ministry, the gifts you receive are immeasurable.
We are available to tell you what is involved with
this wonderful ministry and to answer any questions you
may have.
With thanks and blessings,
Ranelle Nadeau and Jean Reynolds
Our Mission:
We are actively living out our faith
by continually fostering a closer relationship with Christ and
others as we seek and share God's unconditional love....
