Bond Basics:
Understanding how they can
work for you
What are Closed-ended and Open-ended bond funds?
A closed-ended bond fund issues a fixed number of
securities in an initial offer period, and invests the
proceeds in securities such as corporate bonds and
government bonds until fund maturity depending on
its mandate and objectives.
On the other hand, an open-ended bond fund invests
in securities such as corporate bonds and government
bonds with no fund maturity target depending on its
mandate and objectives.
Closed-ended bond funds and open-ended bond funds
share the following similarities:
• Professional management – Both are run by portfolio
managers with the assistance of analysts.
• Diversification – Both mitigate security-specific risk
by holding a diversified basket of sectors.
• Economies of scale – A basic premise for fund
investing is that pooling money from many investors
enables investment and operating costs to be
lowered through economies of scale.
Here are some of the fundamental differences
between these two fund types:
• Number of shares – A closed-ended bond fund has
a fixed number of securities while an open-ended
bond fund can issue any number of new securities or
can redeem existing securities.
• Restrictions – A closed-ended bond fund does not
have to maintain cash reserves or meet redemptions
and has greater leeway to invest in illiquid stocks,
securities or markets.
• Accessibility – A closed-ended bond fund does have
a target fund maturity while an open-ended bond
fund allows investors to access their investment at
any time.
Our closed-ended bond fund aims to achieve higher
returns than FD rate by investing up to 100 percent of
its NAV in a diversified portfolio of debt instruments,
money market instruments and deposits.
Economies in the Asia-Pacific region continue to
show resilience and offer relatively attractive
risk-adjusted returns compared with other regional
markers, providing favourable conditions for bond
issuances. Declining onshore Chinese bond yields have
encouraged onshore bond investors to diversify into
offshore Asian bonds in search for higher yields. Asian
credit fundamentals look sound with its default rates
expected to stay below most other regions this year.
Based on the graph below, it shows that Asian
investment grade bonds offer higher yields than their
counterparts in the U.S.

Brexit has caught everyone by surprise. Asset classes
like equity and FX have witnessed wild swings during
that period of time. Political risk has scaled to a new

The new RHB Premier
debuts with prestige
On 22 July 2016, the RHB Banking Group unveiled the
new RHB Premier with pomp and splendour at the Grand
Hyatt Hotel in downtown Kuala Lumpur. More than 300
of RHB’s most affluent customers and guests attended
the gala night.
Themed, “A World of Privileges that Puts You First,”
RHB Premier was launched by Dato’ Khairussaleh Ramli,
Group Managing Director of The RHB Banking Group.
“We recognise that increasingly today, convenience,
personalisation and on-demand solutions are crucial
considerations in catering to the needs of affluent
banking customers,” Dato’ Khairussaleh said during
his keynote address. “With that in mind, we have
developed an affluent value proposition as one of the
core components in our IGNITE 2017 transformation
programme, in order to deliver superior customer
experience to our affluent customers.”
The night unravelled with an exquisite spread of culinary
delights accompanied by a sterling performance by
local diva, Datuk Sheila Majid, who belted out popular
favourites. Guests were also treated to an exciting lucky
draw segment featuring top-notch prizes that included
products like the Macbook Pro, iPad Pro and iPad Mini.
Not only was it a night of celebration, it was also an
evening that brought RHB’s most distinguished guests
and customers together to indulge in the splendours
of luxury.

The premier lifestyle
In an effort to reward existing customers for their continuous support whilst
providing them with mid-year market insights, RHB hosted a talk on Premier
Lifestyle and Investments. Held in collaboration with Cycle and Carriage Bintang
Malaysia at Mercedes-Benz showrooms in Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Penang and Johor
Bahru, the talk was moderated by Julian Ng, BFM host for the Morning Run Belt,
Market Watch, The Breakfast Grille and Ringgit & Sense.

Investments can be a tough topic to master. Helping to expand their
breadth of knowledge on subject matter, RHB jointly organised
a seminar with Bursa Malaysia on 16 April 2016 at the Hilton,
KL Sentral. The event, which kicked off with an introduction by
Ms Ong Li Lee, Director of Securities Market, Bursa Malaysia was
followed by a talk on Equity Investment and Market Outlook by Shin
Kao Jack, Head of RHB Retail Research. To complement the talk,
our female audience also heard from UK-registered Naturopath and
Nutritional Therapist, Ester Peh who spoke on Wellness.

Opening doors to global private
equity investments
The RHB Private Equity Opportunity Fund 1 provides investors the opportunity to
participate in Global Private Equity investments, mainly focused in United States
and Europe. The fund’s objective is to achieve attractive, risk adjusted returns on its
capital through the investment portfolio over 7 years of charter life. The investment
strategy of the fund is to invest primarily in private equity and private debt
investments, including equity co-investment, private debt investment, opportunity
secondaries investment and other speciality strategies. The Fund aims to achieve
long term capital appreciation of 15%-20% gross Internal Rate of Return (IRR).
To equip potential investors with a better understanding of the fund, RHB hosted 3
seminars in Klang Valley at the Le Meridien and the Empire Hotel in Subang from 2
to 4 August 2016. Guest speakers include Ho Seng Yee, CEO Malaysia and Regional
Head of Retail Marketing, RHB Asset Management Sdn Bhd and Kent Chen, Head of
Private Equity in Asia Pacific for Neuberger Berman.
Neuberger Berman has over 29 years of experience in private equity management
with an AUM of US$35 billion. The company has access to more than 300 Limited
Partners (LPs) and over 14,000 private equity owned companies. In addition,
Neuberger Berman also has over 100 dedicated investment professionals with an
average 25 years of industry experience specialising in private equity.

Gentlemen’s Networking Night:
A night of leisure and luxury
ICON, the leading Chinese luxury lifestyle magazine, held a private event in
association with Jeffery Chew, CEO of Paramount Corporation Berhad titled
Gentlemen’s Networking Night. Held at Chaze at Marquee in Menara Lien Hoe,
PJ’s newest modern speakeasy lounge, the event brought together KL’s ‘urban
gentlemen’ to revel in a night of grandeur and luxury.
The event was celebrated by RHB Premier and other partners such as MercedesBenz, Corum, Glenmorangie, Davidoff of Geneva and Chaze at Marquee. Guests
got up close and personal with the latest fleet of Mercedes-Benz cars and
CORUM, the Swiss watchmaker, showcased a variety of stunningly rare watches
from their collection.
The event was hosted by former Miss Universe Malaysia, Nadia Heng while Chief
Editor of ICON Magazine, Jane Wong, delivered her welcome speech to launch the
night. As a token of remembrance, Corum Malaysia’s General Manager, Chris Wan
presented a specially-made Corum Admiral’s Cup Wall Clock to Jeffrey Chew.
Dr. Kelly Siew serenaded the audience with her mellow and velvety voice that
kept everyone entertained for hours. Guests indulged in delicious cuisine
prepared by Chaze at Marquee as well as whisky provided by Glenmorangie
which kept them filled with hours of conversation and camaraderie that lasted
well into the night.
