Think of this little green wonder as a gym session
for the face, especially if it needs a little TLC or
a post-party reviver. Pure jade has been used in
Chinese medicine for centuries to stimulate the
lymph system and help the removal of toxins.
But the true and undeniable test is that using this
cooling roller every night before bed will singlehandedly help skin to remain blemish-free during
the change in seasons. Worth it for this alone.

Being able to apply lashes in one simple move
is the true test of make-up talent but it’s not always
that easy to do, explains make-up artist Soh. “It’s
difficult for anyone, even seasoned make-up artists
to get the false lashes close enough to the lash line
so that the join is completely undetectable. These
purpose-designed tweezers from Shu Uemura make
false lash application effortless from the first try.

While, yes, life is too short to spend hours cleaning
brushes, a huge 72% of UK women have never
washed their make-up tools even though we should
at least once a week. The very instrument that
picks up oil and bacteria from the surface of the
skin harbouring it until it multiplies, resulting in
blemishes and break-outs. Don’t wait for the horror
show; simply use this ingenious brush spray regularly
– between brush washes – and enjoy a germ-free
life and clear complexion.

Hands up if you’ve dispatched a faultless pencil to
make-up purgatory purely because finding a
sharpener has become a never-ending mouse hunt?
This sharpener fits slim, medium and chubby pencils,
collects all the shavings and has a cleaner to boot.
If only everything in life was this useful.

Powder is the Bermuda Triangle of beauty – it’s easy
to take a wrong turn and wind up in no man’s land
with a flat, one-dimensional face. The beauty of this
striking Japanese brush is that it’s easy to buff loose
powder or bronzer into the skin, meaning it moves
with the dimensions of the face and doesn’t just sit
on the outer layer looking powdery and dated. The
velvety black goat hair means it’s utterly luxurious to
use, and doesn’t scratch the fragile facial skin either.
Feel bewildered by lash curlers? This ergonomically
designed pair will convert you. “You can get really
close to the lash line with these Suqqu ones,” says
Kenneth Soh, one of the beauty industry’s favourite
make-up artists. When you place the curlers on the
lid they fit the eye socket perfectly, so you get
a smoother, more curved curl and never a kink.”
We guarantee you’ll receive many a compliment.

“Nothing beats a cotton bud in cleanser to clean up
under the eyes, perfect a red lip or to sweep eye
make-up into an elevated line,” says David Horne,
Illamasqua director of new product development.
We quite agree, but try making life that bit simpler
with these cotton buds that are pre-loaded with
cleanser. Just snap to release the liquid and swipe.
As make-up goes, foundation should never be seen.
These Mac brushes are a mainstay backstage at
catwalk shows due to their ability to create an
airbrush finish when applying foundation and
powder. Their genius doesn’t end there either.
“Make-up artists around the world use these Duo
Fibre brushes because the hair is sparser on the
end of the brush, so you physically can’t pick up too
much product. The brush is foolproof and will never
overload,” says make-up artist Daniel Sandler.
They grip the lashes at the base so all you
need to do is quickly release once you’ve got them
in the right place.”
This season’s Cavalli-inspired loaded
lashes might be in full swing, but to avoid the
dreaded ‘mono-lash’ it pays to keep them separated.
“Plastic lash combs don’t separate as well as this
metal comb. It’s the best way to get completely
defined lashes with no clumps,” advises make-up
artist Daniel Sandler. “I haven’t found anything
nearly as good.”

These elegant blotting papers are the secret behind
the baby-soft, matte skin of the Japanese geishas.
But it’s their ability to soak up mid-afternoon shine
without disturbing the foundation that’s spellbinding.
“Using face powder to keep shine at bay doesn’t fix
the actual problem of too much sebum. But that’s
where blot papers come in. Gently blot up the
excess oil with these sheets and then apply your
powder after,” says Kay Montano, creative director
of myface cosmetics.

MUJI
It may look like a bag of marshmallows, but
buy the bag from Muji and inside you’ll find
a selection of soft-latex shapes that are heaven
sent for applying foundation to the face and body.
The beauty of these is their unparalleled softness
and ease for getting into the nooks and corners
of the face for a seamless finish. “My tip is to
apply foundation only where you need it and
use the sponge to blend away any lines,”
suggests Montano.

t would be incredible to be a natural
born make-up artist, with endless skill
in creating the photo perfect smokey
eye or seamlessly blended foundation.
Sadly most of us are more likely to
be skilled at a five-minute, pre-work routine that
involves dabs of concealer and a slick of mascara.
Now, thankfully the gap between professional and
novice is truly closing in as we have discovered
a host of new tools and beauty experts’ cult
favourites that mean we can all become our own
personal make-up artists. You can thank us later.
