TIPS FOR PROPER CARE AND
MAINTENANCE OF TOOLS
BRIEF INTRODUCTION
TO SMITH’S® AND SHARPENING
• Keep your tools sharp. Sharp tools are more
effective, less time consuming, and save you money.
• Always secure your tool before sharpening and wear
heavy gloves and eye protection during sharpening.
We recommend using a vise to properly secure the
blade for sharpening.
• Sharpen regularly. Regular sharpening may involve
only fine-tuning the edge, but infrequent sharpening may
require much more work to restore the edge. Sharpen
the edge as soon as you notice it’s not working as well
as it should. If you attend to the edge soon enough, it
shouldn’t take much to bring the edge back to sharp.
• Keep your sharpener close by when using your tools.
You will be more inclined to sharpen a dulled edge as
soon as you notice it if there is a sharpener handy.
• Check your progress frequently.
• Replace the abrasive sharpening components in
your sharpener when needed to ensure a proper
sharpening process.
• Clean and dry your tools thoroughly after use and
before storing. Wash the dirt off with a water hose or
use a wire brush to clean your tool.
• Wipe down smaller tools, like pruning shears, before
putting them away to make sure all moisture and sap is
removed from the blades and working parts. Be careful
as you wipe down the tool not to cut yourself on any of
the sharp edges. Again, dry your tool before storing.
• When storing your tools keep them off the floor or
ground. Hanging racks are a convenient way to hang
several long-handled tools in a small area, and they
prevent damage to sharp edges. For smaller tools, use
pegboard with hooks to hang your tools.
• Don’t leave your tools outside. Proper storage will
protect your tools from exposure to unnecessary
moisture and theft. Even when rain is not in the
forecast, tools left outside are exposed to moisture
from wet grass and dew.
• While proper storing, cleaning, and drying are
important to the condition of your tool, it’s also
important to prevent rusting. Protect the surface of
your tools by coating it with an effective rust blocker.
