The Blood of the Lamb
These are the ones who have survived the great period of trial;
they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb (Rev. 7: 14).
We cannot talk about the blood of the Lamb without speaking of sacrifice. In the Old Testament, sacrifices were offered in a variety of circumstances. At the heart of those sacrifices, however, were two notions. First was that human
beings were created by God and thus belonged to God; and secondly that human sins alienate them from God.
Sacrifices offered with a sense that human beings belonged to God were called “peace” or “fellowship” offerings. They were offered in thanksgiving and praise to God (Lev. 7:11). Sacrifices offered acknowledging that human
beings had sinned and alienated themselves from God were called “sin offerings” or “guilt offerings”. Sin offerings
were offered for the remission of sins. Although both sacrifices were important, sin offerings took first priority. One
had to be purified and made righteous before one could stand in the presence of God. Psalm 24:4 asks, “Who may go up
the mountain of the LORD? Who can stand in his holy place?” Then the Psalmist answers, “The clean of hand and pure
of heart,…” Worship was important. Yet, atonement came before worship. Hence the LORD tells us in Hosea 6:6, “it
is love that I desire, not sacrifice, and knowledge of God rather than holocausts.” Let us focus on sin offering for the
rest of this reflection.
There are some common characteristics in sin offerings in the Old Testament. They are: first, the one who had
sinned and in need of forgiveness; second was the priest who offered the sin offering; and third was the animal. Its
blood offered the needed blood for the sacrifice.
The one who had sinned laid his hands on the animal, confessing his sins, or better, symbolically transferring
his sins onto the animal. The animal was then slaughtered. Its blood poured out and sprinkled on the altar by the priest.
Figuratively, the life of the sacrificed animal substituted for the life of the sinner. The one who offered the animal as a
sin offering had sinned against God. Consequently, he deserved to die for his sin. Instead of dying for his sins, the one
who sinned offered the life of the animal for his life. The Book of Leviticus tells us, “the life of every living body is its
blood” (17:14). By giving its blood, the sacrificed animal gave its life for the life of the sinner.
We must recognize, however, that it was God who made this provision. It was God who created the people. It
was God whom they sinned against. It was God who created the animals used for atonement of sins. In Leviticus
17:11 the Lord says, “Since the life of a living body is in its blood, I have made you put it on the altar, so that atonement may thereby be made for your own lives, because it is the blood, as the seat of life, that makes atonement.”
From the Old Testament then, we can say, “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness”
(Heb. 9:22). As John R. W. Stott states, “No forgiveness without blood meant no atonement without substitution.
There had to be life for life or blood for blood” (The Cross of Christ, 2006, p.138). Nonetheless, the blood of animals
could not adequately substitute for human life. Animals were unable to atone for our sins. The Letter to the Hebrews
tells us, “it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins” (10:4). As a result, according to the Letter
to the Hebrews, “Every priest stands daily at his ministry, offering frequently those same sacrifices that can never take
away sins” (10:11).
There was still need for the expiation of our sins. Jesus, the Lamb, offered the perfect sin offering once and for
all. Jesus was the Lamb which was offered and the high priest who offered the sacrifice. According to the Letter to the
Hebrews, “[Jesus] entered once for all into the sanctuary, not with the blood of goats and calves but with his own blood,
thus obtaining eternal redemption” (9:12).
Those who were standing before God had come out of the great persecutions, and had washed their robes and
made them white in the blood of the Lamb that was slain for our sins. In heaven they inherit seven blessings:
Perfect nearness: they stand before God’s throne
Perfect worship: and worship God day and night in his temple.
Perfect shelter: The one who sits on the throne will shelter them.
Perfect satisfaction: They shall neither hunger nor thirst anymore,
Perfect security: nor will the sun or any heat strike them.
Perfect guidance: For the Lamb who is in the center of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to springs of
life-giving water,
Perfect joy: and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
Blessings,
Fr. Ignatius

Illinois families looking to plan for the cost of tuition while
mitigating the risks of investment market and tuition fluctuations that are associated with 529 savings plans and other
college savings alternatives. To date, more than 30,000 students have attended college using over $725 million in College Illinois benefits. Enjoy the certainty of one price and
set payments that allow you to lock in the cost of college
today, so you can feel confident that tuition will be there
tomorrow. Check out College Illinois on Facebook, Twitter
and Google+ to get up-to-the-minute news on College Illinois or call 877-877-3724.
SCHOLARSHIP GALA FASHION SHOW
Due to the recent storm damage to our school gym roof, our
Gala Fashion Show had to be pushed back to Friday, September 30. Our Fashion Show Gala is our biggest event of
the year. In order to provide tuition assistance to families,
our Gala Ad Book and Fashion Show are an important part
of the school budget. Currently our appeal for Gala ads
continues. With the uncertainty of the completion date of
the gym/roof work, we postponed the Fashion Show so that
we have an adequate amount of time to advertise. Our DJ,
St. Jude Alum, Chris Florek, has donated an enormous
amount of draping and piping to turn our gym into a beautiful, magical venue and we want to make sure that all is
properly in place before continuing with our plans. The
gym work is finally complete……. AND NOW……on
with the SHOW!!!! More details to follow.
SCHOLARSHIP GALA AD BOOK
Thank you to the following businesses or individuals for
their recent donation to our Scholarship Gala Ad Book.

Maintenance Company (Willow Springs), Frank Zuccarelli/
Thornton Township and Lesley Patterson/Burnham. Special thanks to Sandy Radecki, former COS teacher, for her
numerous prize donations.

Lord Jesus, you speak to us today,
as you spoke to holy men and women
who have gone before us.
In every age and in our own time,
you call to us and say: Renew My Church.
Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us,
and so enable us to hear you clearly,
to listen to each other attentively,
to imagine our future boldly,
to discern your direction wisely,
to persevere in your holy will courageously,
to stay together in charity,
to surrender our own plans readily,
to embrace the greater good,
to hand on your gifts to future generations.
May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed
Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints.
May their example and presence inspire us with
patient confidence in the work of your grace.
We ask this of you who live and reign with the
Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God,
forever and ever. Amen.
