IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR WEDDINGS
Weddings in Sri Lanka are a colourful occasion steeped in tradition and local culture. At The
Last House, Coco Tangalla and Casa Heliconia we offer couples the traditional “Poruwa”
ceremony carried out by a Buddhist monk, or non-denominational civil service carried out by
a Celebrant and Registrar of Marriage.
Please note that in Sri Lanka a traditional Christian wedding cannot happen outside of a
church. For a Christian wedding to be approved by the local church the couple must remain
in Sri Lanka for months prior to the wedding day to meet with the Minister.
The Poruwa Ceremony
This traditional ceremony lasts 45 minutes and involves the couple arriving at an auspicious
time (decided by a local astrologer) on to the Poruwa podium. Once on the Poruwa the
couple is blessed by the Monk, they then swap 7 betel leaves, the couples index fingers are
then tied together to signify unity and water is poured over their fingers. Following further
blessings from the monk the couple finally light the traditional oil lamp and feed each other
Kiribath (Coconut Milk Rice). As the couple step down from the Poruwa a fresh coconut is
broken in two.
Non-denomination Civil Service
This service takes about 25 minutes and is carried out by our Celebrant, Henri Tathum.
Guests can exchange their own vows and the Celebrant gives a reading. For legalization of
the marriage the couple must sign a Wedding Certificate which is the authenticated by a
Registrar of Marriage. This wedding certificate will need to be translated into English for it to
be recognized in your country. This process will take up to 3 days to complete.
LEGAL REQUIREMENTS
Weddings can be conducted from Monday to Saturday excluding all public holidays.
The minimum legal age for marriage is 21.
There is a legal minimum period of residency prior to the wedding of 4 days (3 nights).
The following original documentation is required in advance to be provided to the District
Registrar of Marriage:
(i) Birth certificate
(ii) Valid 10-year passport
(iii) An affidavit confirming ‘Un-Married’ marital status from solicitor
(iv) If divorced, a decree absolute with court stamp of the previous marriage and an affidavit
to declare marital status stamped by a notary
(v) If widowed, death certificate of former spouse and marriage certificate
(vi) If adopted, an adoption certificate
(vii) If name changed by Deed Poll, legal proof stamped and signed by a solicitor
(viii) A document with full names and address of bride, groom and both sets of parents
(ix) A document with the details of the bride and groom's professions and that of their fathers
