Fr. Anthony’s Faith Formation Corner
Who will be saved?
“Lord, will only a few people be saved?” The question posed to Jesus in the Gospel reading today (Lk 13:22-30) is indeed
very perplexing. Jesus’ response, “try to enter the narrow gate,” is no less perplexing. So who can be saved? In the biblical
and Christian traditions, there is no doubt that faith is necessary for salvation. For example, in St. John’s Gospel, faith and
eternal life are intimately related. Church Councils (e.g., Trent and Vatican I) say that without faith, it is impossible to please
God. There is also that age-old adage: Extra ecclesiam nulla salus est—outside the Church there is no salvation. This statement seems to make in an explicit way the necessity of Christian faith for salvation. Throughout the centuries the Church has
always been unrelenting in its efforts to spread the Gospel to all the nations. The common belief was that without this faith
salvation was not possible. Even those virtuous people who never knew of Christ or his Gospel, and yet led very good lives,
could not attain the fullness of salvation. St. Augustine taught that un-baptized children, though through no fault of their own,
could not enjoy the full beatific vision. For all his greatness, Augustine was off on this one! Christians in the past have believed in the existence of Limbo: a popular belief, but never an official teaching of the Church past or present. On this subject:
I once had to change the wording of a Mass intention of one parishioner, who offered the Mass for the “souls of unborn children in Limbo.”
The Second Vatican Council (1962-65) essentially opens the door of salvation to everyone: Christians and non-Christians
alike. Even those who do not have faith in Christ or know his Gospel, but lead upright lives according to their consciences,
would be saved. They would be saved, but only saved through Christ. The late German Jesuit Karl Rahner came up with the
concept of “anonymous Christianity.” People of other non-Christian religions who do not have the explicit Christian faith
but live according to their consciences are anonymous Christians. Those who do not know and recognize Jesus Christ as Savior do indeed live in an anonymous hope. According to Rahner, for those people, faith can be anonymously theist and anonymously Christian. This concept does sound attractive, but has met with oppositions from both within and without the Church.
From within: it does seem to undermine the missionary imperative to preach the Gospel to non-believers. From without, especially in this age of interreligious dialogue and pluralism: this concept still seems to be too imperialistic (it may be insulting to
non-Christians of good will when we say that they are Christians anonymously).
In the last analysis, though, I would say that salvation is indeed offered to everyone of good will. We just have to believe
that God, in his infinite mercy and wisdom, would know how to deal with the salvation of all his people. But we, who are
privileged enough to have this faith, should treasure it like a pearl of great price. Ultimately faith is a gift from God. And we
believe that God who has given us that faith will bring it to perfection in this life and the life to come.

ĐỔI NGÔI NGOẠN MỤC
“Có những kẻ đứng chót sẽ lên hàng đầu, và có những kẻ
đứng đầu sẽ xuống hàng chót.”(Lc 13,30)
Suy niệm: “Tấm thẻ thông hành” giúp ta trở thành người đứng
đầu trong Nước Trời có ghi dòng chữ sau: “Người đã chiến đấu
qua cửa hẹp và hạ mình phục vụ.” Chiến đấu qua cửa hẹp là
điều kiện phải có để được cứu rỗi, được vào Nước Trời. Hạ
mình phục vụ là phẩm chất cần có để được làm lớn trong Nước
Thiên Chúa. Cuộc chiến của ta trước hết là với cái tôi, cái bản
ngã của chính mình; chiến trường là chính trong nội tâm sâu
thẳm của mình. Cái tôi, cái bản ngã ấy luôn muốn bành trướng
lấn át người khác, cũng như thích thoải mái, an nhàn, hưởng thụ
ích kỷ, ngại con đường hẹp của thập giá. Con đường chẳng mấy
ai muốn đi ấy lại là con đường sống, con đường dẫn đến thứ
hạng ưu tiên trong Nước Trời.
Mời Bạn: Chẳng ai muốn mình là người đứng sau, họa chăng là
khi phải lội qua con nước nguy hiểm. Mọi người ai cũng muốn
được tôn lên hàng đầu nhưng lại thích đi đường tắt, đường rộng,
đường vui… Còn Chúa Giêsu lại muốn ta dấn bước trên con
đường hẹp Ngài đã đi, để đưa tới hạnh phúc, vinh quang. Bạn
có muốn tin và bước đi trên con đường này cùng với Ngài
không?
Sống Lời Chúa: “Theo ai nên cẩn thận.” Đó là lời khuyên của
bậc thức giả. Chúa cũng muốn ta đặt trọn cuộc đời ta cho Ngài
bởi chỉ nơi Ngài ta mới có thể được cứu thoát.
Cầu nguyện: Lạy Chúa Giê-su, Chúa dạy con muốn theo Ngài
thì phải bước vào con đường hẹp, muốn làm đầu thì phải phục
vụ, phải làm người rốt hết. Xin cho con kiên vững đến cùng trên
con đường hẹp này, để con được sự sống hạnh phúc vĩnh cửu
như Chúa hứa.
