ship that sailed to the New World in 1620,

visit Plimoth Plantation, a bi-cultural living

Wampanoag and Colonial English life.

Also visit the 1809 Hedge House, a
Federal-style home built by a merchant
ship owner. Furnished with 19th-century
comforts, it features exhibits from Plymouth
Antiquarian Society’s collections.

Mayflower II at Sunrise, Plymouth
Plymouth Beach, also known as Long Beach,
is a three-mile stretch of sand that juts into
Cape Cod Bay. Parking, concession, lifeguards
and restrooms. Rte 3A, three miles south of
Plymouth Center, across from Plimoth Plantation.
White Horse Beach, in the Manomet
section of Plymouth is a beautiful, long stretch

Parking is on the street. No amenities. Rte. 3A five miles
south of Plymouth Center, left on White Horse Road.

Bird Watching
Some of the world’s finest golf course architects have
brought their designs to America’s Hometown.
Plymouth Beach is a major staging area for shorebirds
and terns in migration, while thickets and 365 ponds host
everything from golden-crowned kinglets to American
bald eagles. In 2009, Plymouth Harbor hosted the first
adult ivory gull seen in Massachusetts since 1946. Mass
Audubon leads birding trips in town throughout the year.
Landmarks
Plymouth Rock, an enduring symbol of the Pilgrims’
arrival in the New World, is the centerpiece of historic
Plymouth. The National Monument to the Forefathers
stands overlooking the town and harbor from her perch
on Allerton Street Hill.

Plymouth is also home to monuments dedicated to
Wampanoag Sachem Massasoit, Pilgrim Mothers,
Pilgrim Maidens and Governor William Bradford.
The sarcophagus on Cole’s Hill contains the remains
of the settlers who perished that first winter. The final
resting place of many of the Pilgrims can be seen by
visiting Burial Hill.

Parks
Morton Park is 180 acres of a delightfully forested area
around Little Pond and the northern shores of Billington
Sea. Includes four life-guarded swimming areas. From
Water St., head up Leyden St, across Rte. 3A, to Summer St.
and follow Summer St. one mile to Morton Park.
Myles Standish State Forest, a 14,000-acre preserve, was
the first Massachusetts state forest, created in 1916. Nine
ponds with bathhouses. Beaches at College and Fearing
Ponds. Bridle paths, bike trails, fishing, boating, hiking,
ski touring. 475 campsites. 508.866.2526. Off Rte 3, exit 5,
Plymouth, west on Long Pond Rd. or off Rte. 495, exit 2,
Rte. 58 north for one mile, off Tremont St. Carver.
Nelson Park, located at the north end of the waterfront,
boasts a small beach area, a playground for the kids and an
area for picnics. North to the end of Water St.; the park
is on the right.

In Plymouth...
Plymouth was already named Plymouth when the
Pilgrims arrived in 1620. Captain John Smith, of
Pocahontas fame, had named it Plymouth in 1612
due to its physical resemblance (in reverse) to
Plymouth, Devon, England.
On theSouthShore...
In 1635 Samuel Lincoln originally of Hingham,
Norfolk, England was one of the founders of Hingham,
Massachusetts. 174 years later, his great, great, great,
great grandson and future President of the United
States, Abraham Lincoln, was born.
In Cranberry Country...
In 1782, Deborah Sampson of Plympton was the first
woman to serve in a U.S. military uniform when she
disguised herself as a man and fought in the American
Revolutionary War.
In MetroSouth...
The catcher’s mitt was invented in 1875 by William
H. McGunnigle, of Brockton a shoemaker who had
the idea to use a protective leather glove for catching a
speedy baseball.
