Advances in technology spur new trend in sports training
Young athletes learn to focus on
speed, agility instead of strength
By Grant Walton
H
igh school athletics is more high profile and
intense than ever. With stiffer rivalry at every
level in every sport, preparation to compete is
changing.
Training is starting to shift from traditional
weight-room protocols and strength emphasis to
workouts that focus on speed and agility.
As training methods evolve, two neighborhood
facilities offer an opportunity to not get left in the
competitive dust.
“One of the main reasons why our training is so
beneficial is because it is safe,” said Joshua Clark,
owner of Fast Athlete USA and its head trainer.
“When kids in middle- and early high-school start
lifting weights to add power and strength, they could
mess with and injure their growth plates,” said Clark.
“With us and our equipment, it is completely safe.”
While promoting non-injurious training under the
supervision of experienced professionals, Fast Athlete
also boasts an impressive array of digital, state-ofthe-art equipment.
Kris Birkeland, owner of the nearby Athletic
Republic training facility, makes a similar claim to
advanced technology.

O
nly two previous boys basketball teams in
Corona del Sol High School’s 30-plus year
history have had perfect-win seasons, until
now, that is.
It was at the end of this
year’s season that one other
team—comprised of freshmen
this time—contributed to the
school’s basketball legacy by
finishing with a perfect 19-0
record.
Only the 1980-81 Aztec
varsity team and the 2003-04
JV team had perfect seasons.
The 1980-81 varsity team
coached by Sammy Duane

tournament. Some players from that team set records

that still stand today, including Harry Payne,

Chris Needham.
Add to that list Andy Hurd, who was one of
the best players to ever play basketball at Corona,
according to CdS basketball alumni and current
coach Sammy Duane Jr.
Members of that same ‘81 championship team
actually won 46 straight games from 1979-1981,
according to Arizona High School Boys Basketball
Records. They were part of a 53-game home win
streak set between 1980-93.
Some members of the same team still hold the
highest field goal record, at 52 percent, and most
assists, 16.8 per game, set during the 1982-83
season.
The only other team with a perfect record was the
2003-04 JV team coached by Andy Strom.
March 21 - April 3, 2009
Page 6
Members of this team, including Sean Imadiyi,
Brent Miller, Demetrius Earl, Eric Michaelis,
Clayton Bates, Matt Saba and Michael Mejia,
went on to play in the 2006 5A-I state championship
game as seniors.
With only two other teams amassing perfect
records, the Corona freshmen’s achievements
this year could bode well when the Aztecs starts
competing in a new region next season.
Although first-year freshman boys basketball
coach Matt Strom and his assistant, former
Corona player Scott Cole, work mainly on player
development at this age, they were pleased with this
season’s outcome.
“We had a very successful freshman season, and
I think all 15 players improved their basketball skills
as well as their basketball IQ,” said Strom.
“You have to remember that freshman basketball
is not about winning and losing—it is about
developing players. With respect to this facet, I think
Coach Cole and I would agree we had a successful
season.”
While all 15 freshman players had a significant
impact during the 19-win season, coach Strom

was able to provide some insight into his team’s
individual components.
Most successful teams have leadership, and
role players who are willing to sacrifice individual
accolades for the good of the team. This CdS
freshman team had both.
“Our emotional leader this year was probably
Avery Moss, a quiet young man who led by
example,” said Strom.
“Our vocal leader was probably Petey Stazzone,
a little pistol who wasn’t afraid of trying to push his
teammates’ buttons.”
He added:
“Tyler Bolton, Robbie Sargent, Matt
Lemke, Ankush Sharma, Wei-Ju Wu, D.J.
Fricks, Austin Millyard and Thane House
contributed in many ways to our overall wins this
season. Their work ethic and dedication continually
kept us prepared for our next opponent.”
In addition, Corona’s freshman team was wellrounded in that it not only had offensive threats but
also defensive prowess and a strong bench.
Although the freshman team had balanced
scoring, with eight different players scoring in
double figures throughout the season, three players
could usually be counted on to contribute firepower

Kyrene Corridor
A
s our economy looks for some positive signs, at
least one closet industry seems to be thriving:
secondhand clothing stores are seeing a surge
in popularity. And yes, the pun is intended.
Closets in more and more places are being stocked
with new (or, rather, gently used) fashions. Whether
it’s the new economy, the trend toward green living
or both, used-clothing stores have seen a sudden
surge in popularity.
Styles are more hip, the
inventory larger and the quality
better.
According to Lisa
LeDeaux, owner of Love Child,
a children’s resale boutique
in south Tempe, people are
spending their money more
thoughtfully these days. And
that, she says, is why resale has
taken on a new cache.
LeDeaux has been at Love Child, formerly Buffalo
Kids, from the beginning, a span of 10 years this
coming June.
She quit what she calls the corporate rat-race
in 1999 to spend more time with her special-needs
son. During that span she has advanced from parttime employee to full-time owner. Lately, she has
seen both the supply and demand of fashionable and
affordable merchandise skyrocket.
While the name may have changed, Love Child is
a longtime treasure in the Kyrene Corridor. The store
is full of great styles, from maternity wear for the
mom-to-be to cool teenage apparel, all at a fraction
of mall-store prices.
March 21 - April 3, 2009
Page 7
News & Notes . . . with Tracy Doren
Even the atmosphere is different. Walk into Love
Child and you’ll realize that the small space is more
than just a place to buy clothes—it’s a destination.
The banter among the customers and employees
is what you’d commonly hear at lunch with friends:
How much a newborn baby should be eating, when
will the “terrible twos” really end.
As with many small stores, this one has grown
with the neighborhood; the mom with the tiny baby
keeps coming back for more when the kids become
tweens, teens and young adults.
Now there’s a whole new set of questions and
answers to be exchanged.
There’s a certain comfort level here, too. Love
Child is a relaxed place were moms can spend time
chatting and browsing, all while LeDeaux or another
team member appraises the bags of clothing and toys
that are brought in for cash or exchange.
With a no-appointment-necessary policy and
the ability to buy clothing for any season all year
round, the convenience of trading seems to work for
everyone. Winter wear and accessories are some of
their biggest sellers, even in summer.
LeDeaux says she has worked hard to create a
community within the shop, and is proud that many
of her customers are also friends.
The racks are full of great styles at great bargains;
the walls are lined with like-new toys that kids can
try out while mom shops.
And the happy chatter among customers becomes
background music for a symphony of agreement that
hand-me-downs aren’t such a bad idea, after all.

and were consistently in double figures
according to Strom: Avery Moss, Ian
Walker and Matt Weber.
Corona’s freshman team played against
quite a few good teams and players this
season that made solid defense a necessity.
Teams like Desert Vista, Highland and
Hamilton were a defensive challenge,
according to Strom.
“Whenever we were up against really
good players, there was no doubt what two
players were going to get the call to defend
them, Matt Weber or Nick Woods,” said
Strom.
Corona’s freshman team this season was
not lacking in height or athletic ability either
on both ends of the court, providing the
team with natural shot blockers and strong
rebounders.
“We were very fortunate to have tall
players that were very athletic,” said Strom.
“When you have that combination, you
naturally have some good shot blockers.
“Avery Moss, Elijah Hempstead and
Andrus Peat did a great job discouraging
our opponents from trying to score in the
lane.”
“We also had four guys help us on the

boards,” said Strom. “Andrus Peat, Avery
Moss, Nick Woods and Elijah Hempstead
kept most of our opponents to one-shot
possessions with their strong rebounding.”
“We were also blessed to have some very
good players come off the bench this year,”
said Strom. “Hempstead and Woods, for
instance, were two players that would have
started for any other freshman team but just
happened to come off the bench for us.”
Although everyone on the team made
great strides during the freshman year and
were recognized as a pleasure to work with,
Strom said he is hoping they continue to
commit themselves to the sport in order to
have the same level of success at the varsity
level.
“As I told them after the last game,”
Strom said, “I hope four years from now you
are not looking back saying, ‘Yeah, we were
undefeated as freshman.’ If so, you did not
put in the necessary work to be successful at
the varsity level.”
This same sentiment was expressed by
head coach Sammy Duane Jr.
“Our freshman team had a great season.
They have the potential to do great things
here at Corona,” said Duane.
“They must understand, though, that
they cannot just live on the glory of their
freshman season. They must continue to
work hard and to get better over the next
three years to be truly successful.”

Team’s youth won’t diminish drive
to lock berth in state softball finals
By Alex Zener
orona’s softball team is
a young but determined
group of players that
expects to be in the mix when the
state tournament rolls around in
May.
Although the Lady Aztecs
have eight returning varsity
players—six of them starters from
last season—they are searching for
the consistency that helped drive
them into the state championship
game last season when they lost
to graduation highly experienced
catcher Ashley Hansen and
pitcher Marina Carroll.
Hoping to fill that abyss and
get the Lady Aztecs back to the
state tournament finals include
seniors Erica Silva, Bridgett
McSweeney, Alexia CarterSalomon, Jamie Pollak,
Laura Bohning and Vanessa
Alvarez.
Coach Jeep Ray is looking to
three returning starters, Pollak,
Alvarez and Mary Speil, to play
a leadership role for her young
C
squad of 14 players.
Despite their status as a
comparatively young team, the
Lady Aztecs have a lot of talented
athletes who know how to play the
game, according to team captain
Pollak. Two of these players
are freshmen who seem to have
athletic genes running through
their veins.
“Two freshman on the team,
Nikki Gionannatti and Abby
Spiel, both have sisters who
have experience playing Corona
softball,” said senior Laura
Bohning.
“Both have performed well
in stressful situations. Abby had
multiple key RBIs in an earlier
game, and Nikki had one of the
first homeruns of the season in
our last tournament.”
In addition to the able
freshmen and determined seniors,
Corona has several players already
rising to the occasion, including
another strong starter from last

season, junior Madison Edwards.
For instance, Pollak, a pitcher, has
already had an effect on the team.
“Jamie Pollak, our lone senior
returning pitcher, is definitely going to
be a major workhorse this season,” said
Bohning.
“She has either started or finished
the majority of our games this season
so far, and she has pitched successfully
every time.”
“Not only is she dominant in the
circle but she is one of the power
hitters that we have on the team
this year as well,” said Bohning.
“Offensively and defensively she
consistently puts up impressive stats.”
Although the season is barely under
way, the team holds promise to be
strong offensively. Key to achieving
that will be how well it is able to
develop a solid core of consistency.
“I think that offensively we have
a very strong group of power/contact
hitters,” said second-base Laura
Bohning.
“We have a lot of potential to
drive in a lot of runs, but individually,
everyone is sporadically going through

short slumps, and it’s hard to get
everyone “on” at the same time.”
“There is a lot of competition out
there this year,” said coach Ray. “There
are no easy games.”
Others hoping to step up to the
plate in an attempt to get Corona’s
team back to the state tournament
finals include Katie Tripp, Sara
Wright, Taylor Tometich and
Kaylee George.
“We have a few younger girls
playing important positions, such
as Abby Spiel pitching and Paige
Vallejos catching,” said Pollak.
“It’s still early in the season, but we
need to work on gelling more as a team
and combining everyone’s individual
talents into a solid team in order to get
back to the state finals.”
Coach Ray is expecting Basha to
be a difficult foe to beat in the Central
region, but getting into the state
tournament is still her goal—and the
team’s as well.
“This year we are playing to avenge
our tough defeat in the state finals,”
said Bohning.
“We have many returning players
on the team…who suffered that tough
defeat in state, and I think that has
helped us to form the goal of going all
the way this season and clinching the

T
he city of Tempe will be hosting its popular
Movies in the Park series at Kiwanis Park again
this spring.
The annual family-friendly event kicks off Friday,
April 3, with the PG-rated movie Igor. Families are
encouraged to bring a blanket and picnic dinner or
some old- fashioned popcorn to relax on the lawn
and enjoy films on one of the largest outdoor screens
in the Valley.
Other dates and coming attractions include:
April 4, The Tale of Despereaux; April 17, Kung
Fu Panda; April 24, Madagascar 2; May 1, Wall-E;
May 8, Bolt; and May 15, Ratatouille.
This year, Wrangler News will sponsor a coloring
contest to accompany each movie.
The next four issues will include a coloring page,
with additional pages distributed at the movie along
with colored pencils so each young artist won’t lose
any time launching his or her creative talent.
Completed creations can be dropped off at any
location listed on the coloring page.
The winner in each age group will take home a
basket of prizes, including passes to the Wave Pool at
Kiwanis Park, batting cages at Fiddlesticks, cookies
from Great Harvest Bread Company, Dairy Queen ice
cream and a variety of gift cards.
Missing persons topic of
next police advisory session
Chandler’s Community Policing Advisory Board
will host its next quarterly presentation on missing
persons—what to do if a family member or friend is
missing, how to cope with police and FBI, what is the
role of DNA—at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 25.
Private investigator Sandra L. Sells will be the
guest speaker.
The program will be held in room 203 at Chandler
Community Center, 125 E. Commonwealth Ave.,
Chandler.
CPAB membership comprises citizens from each
police beat, non-Chandler citizen activists from any
area of the community and two members of the
Chandler Police Department.

Parking just got easier for
visitors to downtown Tempe
Parking is now easier than ever for Kyrene
Corridor residents who want to visit downtown
Tempe. A 400-space parking garage has opened on
Fifth Street just east of Mill Avenue at Forest.
With the opening, coupled with the planned
inauguration of a US Airways garage at Third Street
and Mill, nearly 12,000 parking spaces are now
available in downtown Tempe.
The two new garages will add 1,700 spaces to the
city’s parking inventory, according to city planners.
The garage was built by McCarthy Construction. It
will also offer 12,000 square feet of retail and office
space with Fifth Street frontage.
The city of Tempe is actively recruiting tenants for
this space.
Members of winning KMS eighth-grade boys basketball team include, from left, front, Spencer Knox, Casey Benson,
Richaud Gittens, Paul Elvira, Josh Ethier; rear, Robert Relf, Mauriece Lee, Thomas Warren, Adam Gleave, Devin White,
Braden Tennyson, Coach Tony Fanucci.
KMS seventh-, eighth-grade basketball
teams victorious in major state contests
K
yrene Middle School seventh- and eighthgrade boys basketball teams both competed
in the Arizona Junior High School Athletic
Association Boys Basketball Tournament last
month, with the eighth grade team taking home the
championship trophy by defeating Mountain Sky
Middle School soundly in the finals held last month
at Isaac Middle School in Phoenix.
The eighth grade team steam-rolled through the
tournament beating their opponents by an average
of 24 points: KMS defeated Gavilan Peak (Anthem)
57-24, Desert Sands (Phoenix) 58-25, Desert Arroyo
(Cave Creek) 45-32 and Mountain Sky (Phoenix)
48-33. Casey Benson was named the tournament
MVP.
The seventh grade team had to compete against
eighth graders in the tournament but represented
their school and district well by winning the
consolation bracket after losing in the first round of
the tournament.
The seventh and eighth grade teams made it to
the state tournament by winning the Kyrene District
championships. Both teams coincidentally beat
Akimel A-al Middle School in Kyrene championship
games.
Eighth grade coach Anthony Fanucci has been
with the same group of boys for two years. This
eighth grade team was last year’s seventh grade
Kyrene District champions and city of Tempe
Holiday Invitational champions with a 16-1 record.
This season, as eighth graders, the team posted a
15-2 record.
The team’s only losses were to the same team
they beat in the district championships: Akimel A-al.
Kyrene lost once in a double overtime thriller in this
season’s City of Tempe Holiday Invitational 54-53
and the second time during a regular season game.
After two years, Coach Fanucci has gotten
to know this group of boys quite well. At this
level, Fanucci believes the game is more about
sportsmanship, teamwork and gaining basketball
knowledge than it is about individual statistics and
achievements.
“To begin with, we are a family—we win and
we lose as a team,” said Fanucci. “In order to win
championships, bench depth and total team talent
are crucial. Everyone must be prepared to step in and
deliver at any time.”
In order to win both the Kyrene District
championship game against Akimel A-al after losing
in two previous games, and the state tournament,
the Scorpions had to play as a team as well as have
offensive firepower and defensive prowess.
Fanucci had several offensive weapons to throw at
his team’s opponents.
Benson has a great perimeter shot, Richaud
Gittens can drive the basket, Braden Tennyson
has the transition layup, Devin White has
incredible put backs and Adam Gleave and Josh
Ethier provide perimeter fire power according to
Fanucci. Spencer Knox provides a back court
presence off the bench and Mauriece Lee had
his best offensive and defensive game during the
championship game with Akimel A-al said Fanucci.
On the other side of the court, Robert Relp can
play quick, smothering defense with the ability to
block shots while Tennyson will take a charge and
scramble at all costs according to Fanucci.
White can be a tenacious rebounder and shot
blocker while Lee can provide a determined physical
defensive presence. Paul Elvira and Thomas
Warren are two of the leading rebounders and help
provide defensive pressure for the team according to
Fanucci.
“The best thing about coaching this team was the
character of the players,” said Fanucci.
“They were always respectful, caring, and tight.
The parents were also very supportive and always
had kind words for everyone involved.”
The seventh grade boys basketball team coached
by John Burroughs that won the Kyrene District
championship and the consolation prize in the state
eighth grade tournament includes Vance Arnold,
Jalen Brown, Tyler Lazenby, Anthony Varela,
Jarret Givens, Steven Coker, Trevor Wood,
Dominic Krane, Kelsey Trevino, Kyle Lai and
Nathan Basinger.

Tempe has been the target of a long-running scam
that is meant to tug at your heart strings to convince
you to buy.
Small groups of pleasant-looking young men have
been posing as the “boy from around the block” or
“your neighbor’s nephew” with the intention to gain
your trust and get you to part with some cash or
possibly gain access to your home.
These all-American young men, and sometimes
women, have a variety of stories to go along with
their pitch to sell magazines or books, usually
involving a fundraiser for a children’s charity.
The best response, say police:
Close the door. Their “neighbor” status typically
folks quickly under questioning. When you say you
don’t need any magazines, they’ll offer to send your
subscription to a charity, a youth center or a YMCA.
Don’t believe them.
While it remains undetermined whether these
people are casing homes in the neighborhood for
more sinister visits later, or simply pocketing cash for
their own gain, the only way to stop this sort of scam
is to be informed.
More advice: Don’t buy anything from anyone
working door-to-door. Never give to charities about
which you have no direct knowledge.
Better yet: don’t give money to anyone you don’t
know personally.

A good sandwich is hard to find
New Kafé 440 lives up to
its promise of gourmet fare
By M.V. Moorhead
I
f, like me, you regard a good
sandwich as a treasure, then
consider this a treasure map: Kafé
440, tucked unobtrusively alongside
the Italian restaurant Picazzo’s, on the
north side of Warner Road just east of
Kyrene.
There you will find, simply said,
a bounty of delicious sandwiches.
And side dishes. And breakfasts. And
teriyaki and ramen bowls. And a booty
of other lovingly hand-created menu
items, all made from scratch, all the
products of Cook’s culinary creativity.
“It’s still a menu in process,”
explains owner Jeff Cook of the new
incarnation of the former Saboten
Grill, his Japanese-food emporium that
occupied the same location. “It’s ever
evolving.”
Cook’s own career has been as
varied and intriguing as the gourmet
offerings on his menu. The Arizona
native attended both University of
Arizona and Arizona State University
as a finance student, then spent a
number of years in show business
doing sound engineering and digital
video for commercials and music
videos.
“A friend of mine owned a sound
company in L.A.,” Cook recalls, and he
was invited on board. “Pretty much any
music video from that time [the ‘90s], I
probably worked on.”
He also worked on commercials for
such high-profile firms as AT&T, Fox
Baseball, Taco Bell and Visa, as well as
numerous foreign concerns.
After spending a few years in the
financial sector, Cook—what’s in a
name?—became interested in the
restaurant business.
Initially he and a partner had
planned to franchise Island Teriyaki.
This never materialized, but some
years later Cook began Saboten Grill
with his wife and culinary collaborator,
Susan Kamimura, a native of Kobe,
Japan, who likewise took a circuitous
route to the restaurant business: She
spent time as a ski instructor in British
Columbia.
Saboten eventually morphed into
Kafé 440, which is open six days a
week (closed Mondays) for breakfast
and lunch only.
“We don’t go out (for meals) a lot,
because I don’t like the quality,” says
Cook, though he also acknowledges
that he and Kamimura are a couple of
enthusiastic foodies.
They’re especially fond of the
treats at La Grande Orange on 40th
Street in Phoenix, and the influence
of LGO’s menu on that of Kafé 440
is unmistakable, both in the style of
the cuisine and in the quality of the
ingredients.
Sauces from scratch and all-natural
breads make up the tasty 440 fare,
giving a sophisticated and creative
boost to such standard lunchtime eats
as egg salad, pesto chicken and tuna
melts, with a variety of sides including
some really addictive sweet potato
fries.
For breakfast, you can enjoy
omelets, pancakes, French toast, crepes
or Croque Madame.
Cook doesn’t deny his downtown
source of inspiration:
“That’s what I want, for people
around here to say Kafé 440’s got great
sandwiches; let’s go there—just like
people downtown say about La Grande

Innovation, hard work lead
to promising future for
robotics club members
By Matt Austin
n today’s society we utilize technology more than
we sometimes imagine. What was once a luxury
has become something we depend on.
Now, through innovation and hard work, students
taking part in the Robotics Club at Marcos de Niza
High School are trying their hand at new and exciting
possibilities.
The purpose of the club, according to president
Suzie Williams, is more than just using different
tools, learning various sciences and technologies and
building a robot.
“It is the group of people coming together to form
an intellectual fusion.”
This Marcos club is doing just that as its members
prepare for a trip to Atlanta this spring.
“Our goal is to make it to the national
competition, ” Williams said. “That’s where all the
competent robots are, and the whole event is like a
big party.”
A number of students involved in Marcos’
robotics club, including Williams and senior Lauren
Johnston, are first-year members who say they have
enjoyed their decision to become a part of the effort.
Said Johnston:
“My physics teacher, Mrs. (Sandy) Gorton,
invited me to come one day, and I decided to give it
a try.
“I like it that everyday I come here, there is
something different to do.”
The robot currently being assembled by the
Marcos team also has some intriguing features that
are required for the national competition, such as
special wheels that will be used to create less friction
with the ground and will force it to maintain onesixth gravity movement.
“A special challenge this year has been the
low friction that simulates moving on the moon,”
Johnston said.
The Marcos de Niza team meets Monday through
Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 8
a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room 311.

Orange.”
This approach isn’t inflexible, either.
Says Cook:
“If someone wants something that’s not on the
menu, if we have it, I’ll make it…This menu came
together because”…
He pauses, then shrugs, and gives the reason: “I
like food.”

Mini-triathlon brings kids, families together
Thirty kids and a dozen parents spent six Friday
afternoons training for a triathlon, the first such
event for many of the participants.
The group, members of Fellowship of Christian
Athletes, held an after-school triathlon class in which
families were able to participate. Classes were held
outside of class time.
The class culminated with a race March 8, during
which kids the ran a mile, then biked four miles and
swam 100 yards. Adults ran two miles, biked 12 miles
and swam 400 yards.
Most who took the class placed top five in their
age group.
Completing their first triathlon were Matthew,
Megan and Steve Marples; Daniel, Bethany
and Coleman Houser; Amanda, Johnathan and
Ianet Molina; Alex and Emily Manning; Joe

We raise (the body’s) lactic thresholds, which allows
athletes to recover more quickly. The recovery time is
unmatched.”
March 21 - April 3, 2009

And that, he says, is one of the things his
company’s method does best: make people into fast
athletes.
“We work on recruiting new muscle fibers so you
can run and react quicker,” Clark said.
“We focus on turning people into athletes so
when they are working in practice they can focus on
hitting their jump shot or catching the ball, and they
don’t have to worry about their athletic ability in that
activity or sport.”
While Fast Athlete focuses on helping a wide
variety of athletes to achieve high-condition
performance in competitive situations, Athletic
Republic emphasizes workouts designed for training
in specific sports.
“When an athlete comes in here, we work

on exercises that are customized to their sport,”
Birkeland said. “We do not waste our time on things
that are irrelevant to the sport they wish to excel in.”
While the two approaches rely on what their
advocates note are proven techniques, both Clark
and Birkeland say they regularly field inquiries
from parents who want to know more the processes
involved before committing a son or daughter to the
new regimen.
Among the most common questions:
How young is too young to start? Can an athlete
be hurt by starting to train too early?
“When people bring their young kids in to train,
we sometimes have to tell them they are too young,”
Birkeland said. But that’s not always the case.
“It’s hard to determine an age because they need
to have a maturity and a work ethic when they come
in here because we don’t fool around when we come
in to train—we come here to work.”
Safety is also an issue.
“We work with some machines that you can hurt
yourself on,” said Travis Ward, a trainer with
Birkeland at Athletic Republic.
“They are completely safe and are very beneficial
when you use them right, but when a child doesn’t
listen and loses focus, it could get dangerous.”
If lack of years isn’t always a deterrent, are
advancing years? In other words, says Fast Athlete’s
Clark, “How old is too old?”
“Anyone who might no longer be an athlete can
come in and train,” Clark said. “There is no age limit.
The training keeps people in shape regardless of their
age. We encourage anyone who wants to train in here
to do it; we want to help them get in the best shape of
their life.”
While most athletes start training to gain an
advantage on the field or court, they also could be
gaining skills that will help them get an advantage in
life.
“I enjoy talking to people who walk through the
door and not only see their performance go up a
notch, but their confidence as well,” Clark said.

Athletes
From Page 16
“I’ve seen kids who are doubtful as
athletes come in here and, when they
leave, they are proud and confident.
That’s why I do what I do.”
Not only will people’s confidence
increase but their social skills, as well.
“Due to the fact that we train two
or three kids at a time, the kids start to
bond with each other and encourage
each other,” Athletic Republic’s Ward
said.
“Then they build relationships
because they have both conquered the
treadmill together.”
Although the two centers have
a regular following among amateur
athletes, they also get their share of
professionals who have a broader
motivation to improve their skills. And
these, of course, can have names that
are readily recognizable.
“Every trainer remembers the
professional or collegiate athlete they
train,” Birkeland said.
While such sports-world “stars”
make interesting memories, the
trainers at both centers say it’s their
day-to-day clients who offer the
greatest rewards.
Explained Birkeland:
“My favorite story is when we get
kids in here who are quiet and unsure
about what they are doing, and by the
time they leave we can’t get them to
shut-up; they can’t wait to come back
and push themselves.”

Volunteers needed to distribute water safety information in Tempe
The City of Tempe has been fortunate
recently when it comes to water safety
– only one child has drowned in Tempe
in the last five years. But even that is too
many.
The city wants to do everything
possible to prevent drownings by
providing education and resources.
That’s why volunteers are needed to pass
out water safety information to Tempe
households at the second regional Walk
for Water Safety outreach event on
Saturday, April 4, from 9 a.m. to noon.
The Tempe Fire Department has
partnered with Banner Children’s
Hospital, SRP and the fire departments
in Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Scottsdale,
Queen Creek and Apache Junction
for the event, which aims to provide
drowning prevention information
to more than 50,000 homes in one
morning.
Lifeguard whistles, brochures in
English and Spanish, and other small
items will be packaged in bags and
distributed on doorknobs around the
City of Tempe. Volunteers are invited to
distribute water safety bags around their
own Tempe neighborhoods.
Bags can be picked up on
Saturday, April 4th at the Tempe Fire
Administration Building, 1400 E. Apache
Blvd. For more information on volunteering, call Beverly Burns with the
Tempe Fire Department, at
480-858-7240.

Workshop and Neighbor of the Year
Awards.
A continental breakfast will be
offered at this free, half-day event at the
Pyle Adult Recreation Center, 655 E.
Southern Ave., followed by an awards
ceremony saluting the work of dedicated
community members.
Mayor Hugh Hallman and the City
Council will present the Neighbor

of errors, according to the doctor.
Key to their philosophy, he says, Oppong-Takyi
and his staff emphasize the importance of patients
being able to have a full understanding of their state
of health. A high-tech heart-monitoring device, which
the patient wears for 24-hours, keeps a diary of
activities. By matching the diary times with computer
results, the doctor notes that he is able to pinpoint
the problem and diagnose it with more accuracy.
“You can see irregular heartbeats and some other
cardiac issues,” he said. “That will help us see what
cardiac disease might be going on.”
A stress test monitors the heart’s activity during
physical activities. Patients are placed on a treadmill
that is linked to a computer. The office also has
its own in-house lab capability, and can schedule
appointments for patients who need special testing.
“We do a lot of the work for you,” Dorette said.
“Most doctors will give you a note and say ‘Go look
for a cardiologist.’ We book the appointment; send all
your notes, do your lab work.”
Dorette said patients with busy schedules can
have several issues addressed in one visit.
“When you walk out that door, a lot of things have
been done for you,” she said. “Everybody is busy, so
we make a lot of things convenient for the patient.”
The doctor said his goal has been to establish an
environment that encourages open communication.
March 21 - April 3, 2009
Page 20
He wants patients to know he understands their
situation and is willing to provide an ear and advice.
“Sometimes all the patient wants to do is talk and
have someone listen,” he said.
Before opening Kyrene Medical Center, the
Oppong-Takyis had an office in Safford for five years.
The family decided to move to the Valley to receive
better opportunities for their 10-year-old son, Nana,
who is autistic.
“We weren’t getting a lot of services in Safford
for him,” Dorette said. “We moved here to find extra
services.”
Dorette said Nana needed therapy and programs
which would help his development—and she believes
the family didn’t have much time.
“If you don’t help (an autistic child) while he’s
young, he’ll grow old and the brain is matured,” she
said. “You can’t retrain the brain.”
The doctor said he believes in honesty and in the
goal of developing relationships with his patients.
Over the years, he has become close with them.
“A guy has to trust his physician, so we usually
establish that relationship,” he said.
He said he would like to see patients leave his
office happy and satisfied. It is one of the reasons his
patients from the Safford office now make regular
three-hour drives for appointments.
“We have them coming here. They drive all
the way, and then they drive back,” Dorette said,
adding that patients appreciate the Oppong-Takyis’
willingness to talk about any subject. Relationships
and trust have been an integral part of the practice’s
foundation, said the doctor.
Dorette Oppong-Takyi manages the Kyrene Corridor medical
practice of her husband, Dr. Frank Oppong-Takyi.
— Tracy Doren / Wrangler News
“That is the key to medical practice,” he said. “It is
not as much (what) you know about the 20 causes of
heart failure, but how you make your patients feel.
“My whole philosophy (is that) I want to make
sure whoever (we see) here gets out feeling better
than they walked in.”

Dietician guides kids to healthier eating
By Emily Jacobson
T
hroughout the last
decade, obesity has
become a national
epidemic for children
and adults. The need for
preventative education
and increased awareness
is especially needed to
impede the growth of
childhood obesity.
With dire health risks
and social stigmas related
to obesity, more healthcare
professionals and parents
are looking for ways
to combat and prevent
unhealthy eating practices
for children.
Here in the Kyrene
Corridor, registered
dietician and instructor
Katie McWhirter
has instituted ways to
incorporate nutrition into
cooking classes for children
in what she says is a fun,
“hands-on” approach.
McWhirter is currently
state media representative
for the Arizona Dietetic
Association, in addition
to being employed at
Chandler Regional
Hospital. She also is an
instructor for the Tempe
Parks and Recreation
Department and has
participated in new “lunchand-learn” seminars
throughout the area.
McWhirter’s busy
schedule, however, hasn’t
prevented her from
expanding her nutritional
influence. Eight years of
experience as an instructor
and five as a dietician seem
to have prepared her for
a variety of educational
classes, all in a manner
that helps children to enjoy
healthy eating.
McWhirter’s “Kids
for Cooking” classes
incorporate nutritional
lessons with kid-friendly
activities like games,
puzzles, and crosswords to
associate a healthy lifestyle
with positive pursuits.
While emphasizing
healthy-eating habits,
McWhirter also
encourages her pupils’
active participation in
the cooking process. An
emphasis on the food-guide
pyramid, which delineates
recommended servings and
options for healthy eating,
coupled with actively
cooking healthy versions
of appetizers, salads, main
entrees and deserts in class,
allows the children to apply
their nutritional knowledge
in everyday living.
So how do the kids
in her class respond to
McWhirter’s healthy-eating
guidelines?
“By making healthy
foods in class that taste
good, [the children] are
more willing to try these
foods at home,” she says.
“Lots of children who take
the classes even become
‘repeat customers’.”
McWhirter’s “Kids
for Cooking” classes are
regularly full and have
earned a positive response
from the community.
She says she believes
that the success of her
class is due to the fact
that “the children always
have a good time and the
parents…feel that their
money is well spent.”
McWhirter recently
expanded her classes to
other parts of the East
Valley, and is gearing
up for Mother’s Day and
Father’s Day brunch
classes.
If you’re looking for a
fun way to learn healthier
habits and influence your
children’s future choices,
McWhirter’s classes are a
great option.
Information is
available from Tempe
Parks and Recreation
at (480) 350-5200 or
directly from McWhirter
at katiemcwhirter@yahoo.
com.
Here are three kid-friendly recipes
which incorporate healthy food
choices. Feel free to pick one you like:
Peanut butter roll-ups
Roll-up sandwiches make a simple lunch
special. First lay flat a whole wheat tortilla.
Spread a layer of peanut butter on top of the

‘Sunshine Cleaning’
a bright spot on
season’s movie horizon
T
he title Sunshine Cleaning rings just right for Amy
Adams, who has built her career thus far on playing
squeaky-clean rays of sunshine.
It’s to her credit that she hasn’t let this sweetheartoptimist image turn her into a joke. She lampooned it,
very charmingly, in the Disney self-parody Enchanted, and
played it realistically in her Oscar-nominated supporting
turn as an idealistic nun in Doubt.
In Sunshine Cleaning Adams plays Rose Lorkowski,
once the prettiest and cheeriest cheerleader at her high
school in Albuquerque. A decade plus a few years later,
she’s still pretty and cheerful, but now she’s a struggling
single mom, trying to support
her smart, eccentric son Oscar
(Jason Spevack) on her wages as a
housecleaner.
Rose’s dreams of going into
the real estate business haven’t
materialized, and her love life
consists of sneaking off to a motel
now and then for a quick liaison with
her old high-school boyfriend (Steve
Zahn), who’s now a married police
detective.
Her younger sister Norah (Emily
Blunt) is also pretty but not so
cheery, and not so responsible as Rose when it comes to
work. Their ebullient father (Alan Arkin) is a salesman
who talks big but is unmistakably small-time. Their mother
died when they were young, under circumstances we learn
gradually as the story progresses.
Said circumstances concern a macabre but lucrative
business opportunity into which Rose stumbles. After
listening to her financial complaints, the detective casually
suggests that she try her hand at cleaning up after crime
scenes: suicides, homicides and other messy domestic
tragedies.
She presses the dour Norah into service helping her,
and despite a few hiccups (she doesn’t know the protocols
of biohazard disposal, for instance) before long the
business is rolling in.
A variety of oddball episodes and conflicts ensue.
Rose dubs the venture Sunshine Cleaning, and, oddly
enough, finds that she likes the work; providing tangible
help at a crisis point in people’s lives suits her personality.
She also forms a connection with a quiet, good-natured
cleaning-product salesman (Clifton Collins Jr.) while
Norah impulsively befriends a lonely young woman (Mary
Lynn Rajskub) whose picture she finds in the wreckage of
a job.
Directed by Christina Jeffs from a tidy script by
Megan Holley, this is the sort of modest, neatly crafted
little picture that, even though it’s not a knockout, is so
refreshing that it can restore your faith in popular movies.
Not all of the plot strands pay off satisfyingly, but the
characters come across believably, and the settings and
circumstances aren’t stale; they haven’t been beaten to
death in earlier movies.
Wrangler News

Page 29
The true appeal of this unassuming movie is in the
performances, however, especially those of Adams and
Blunt. The latter, a droll British actress here sporting a
flawless American accent, has one of the most formidable
you’ve-got-to-be-kidding-me glares to appear onscreen in
many years.
And Adams depicts a person of sunny disposition
without infantilizing or idealizing her: Rose’s pain, her
anger, her flaws and her disappointments are just as real as
her sweetness.
She’s a delight in the role, but she also seems like a
genuine star. She transcends the merely cute.

Arizona Community
Church played host
to the adrenalinrevving excitement of
Motor Sports Day, a
celebration of those 4wheeled powerhouses
that seem to roar even
when parked on what
some might consider a
sort of asphalt-topped
hallowed ground. The
event, now in its 11th
year, drew a record
380 cars and more
than 2,500 viewers who
jammed the church’s
Tempe grounds at
Rural & Knox roads.

IKEA site of food-box donations
Economic conditions have resulted
in an increased demand for emergency
services, including food boxes, prompting
Tempe Community Action Agency to set up
additional Food Pantry drop-off locations.
According to TCAA officials, about 10
new households apply for food assistance
each month; more than 50 percent of the
recipients are children.
As a result of the added demand, TCAA
has placed collection bins at the IKEA store
on Warner Road, where area residents can
donate non-perishable food items through
the end of March.
In addition to the current drive, officials
say protein items, such as peanut butter,
tuna and canned meat products are always
needed. Other items are cereal and boxed
meals, such as macaroni and cheese.
Applicants for assistance must bring
proof of Tempe residence, such as a driver’s
license or current utility bill.
Anyone can come in once a month from
9 a.m. to noon to pick up a food box which
includes canned items, meat and dairy
if available. Tempe Community Action
Agency serves homeless, children, seniors
and working poor families.
