Scriptural Reflection for the Week
“Therefore, let us celebrate the feast; not with the old yeast, the
yeast of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of
sincerity and truth.” (see 1 Corinthians 5:6b-8) Happy Feast of
Easter! It is time to celebrate after our 40 days Lenten journey.
Saint Paul tells us the way to celebrate the Feast of the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. It can’t be by falling back to our old
ways—you know, when you are tempted to remain stubbornly
selfish. Instead, people need to see “sincerity and truth” from you.
Paul refers to this sincerity and truth as “unleavened bread”.
Why? That’s what the host at Mass is. And what it becomes in
Jesus’ Passover from death to life is the One who is all sincerity
and truth—Jesus Himself! Are you willing to die with Jesus so as
to rise with Him? Are you willing to at times be the victim with
Him for another’s sins so as to become the Victor? Are you willing
to purge all falsehood from your heart so as to be of the Truth?
Can you be sincere, not phony, in your love so as to carry God’s
Love to all you meet? May our Risen Lord Jesus be always in our
hearts! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
A Blessed Easter!
to all, especially those who received the grace of God’s Mercy by
returning to the Sacrament of Reconciliation after a long time and
have experienced the Lord’s healing.
Stewardship…..
Reflection
In the second reading today, St. Paul reminds the
Colossians that they have been raised with Christ,
exhorting them to “be intent on the things above rather
than on things of earth.” We too, have been raised with
Christ. Let us rejoice and be glad!
Living Stewardship
We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish
who, like St. Paul, give witness for the “good news” of
salvation, especially through extending mercy to others.
SACRIFICING FOR
ONE ANOTHER
We demonstrate being good stewards of our Parish by

Special Mass this Wednesday Evening: All Invited
This Wednesday at 7:30pm in the Church, we will have a special
Mass for the newly initiated Catholics. At Saturday evening’s
Easter Vigil ANDREW DONNADIO, REUBEN GONZALEZ,
ALEXANDRA HENWOOD, and LAUREN KIRCHER were baptized, confirmed, and received Holy Communion. We welcome
them into the Church and pray for them. Join us in doing so! Refreshments to follow after Mass.
Divine Mercy Sunday
is next Sunday, April 3rd. During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, celebrate this special devotion with us. After the 1pm Mass, there will
be exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, the opportunity for confession, the praying of the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy, the veneration of the relic of St. Faustina, and Benediction. We pray that
the Divine Mercy may be extended to all hearts that are broken
and hurting.
Your Easter Gift to your Parish
reflects your participation in our shared mission to spread the
Gospel through the Word of God, the Sacraments and the
Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. Please be generous.
Catholic Ministries Appeal 2016
Everyone on the Parish mailing list would have already received
this year’s pledge information and forms. Please consider your
pledge amount and return the pledge card by the end of the
month. Pledges are payable up to the end of December. About
$1.00 pledged daily from now to December amounts to a gift of
approximately $250. Your gift assists the mission of the Parish
and Church on Long Island. Many thanks for your consideration
and sacrifices. Pledge information is available as you leave
church today.
One Final Thought
“All of us must cling to God through prayer and sacrifice. Only
then will we be able to see Christ in the needs of our neighbors.”

Lord,
The Resurrection of Your Son
has given us new life and renewed
hope.
Help us to live as new people
in pursuit of being an example to others.
Grant us wisdom to know what we
must do,
the will to want to do it,

the perseverance to continue to do it,
and strength to complete it.
We ask this through Jesus, our Savior.

CELEBRATING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
By Rev. Johnny R. Mendonca
The Paschal Mystery is a core doctrine of the Church, one of the essential beliefs of all
Christians. Though all doctrines are important, it can also be said that some doctrines
define the very heart of the Christian faith. The Paschal Mystery is one of those
doctrines, making it similar to the doctrines of the Incarnation and the Trinity. According
to the Catechism of the Catholic Church: "Christ’s work of redemption accomplished
principally by his Passion, death, Resurrection, and glorious Ascension, whereby 'dying
he destroyed our death, rising he restored our life' (1067). The paschal mystery is
celebrated and made present in the liturgy of the Church, and its saving effects are
communicated through the sacraments (1076), especially the Eucharist, which renews
the paschal sacrifice of Christ as the sacrifice offered by the Church (571, 1362–1372).
The liturgy of the Church, the celebration of the sacraments, and the seasons of Lent and
Easter are particular times when we pay attention to what Jesus Christ has done for us
through his passion, death, Resurrection, and Ascension. Yet these are not the only
times when we experience the Paschal Mystery. It is a part of our everyday life; it is the
power of all that we do and all that we are.
What does this mean? How do I experience the Paschal Mystery? How does it affect me
on a day-to-day basis? How do I become aware of its presence in my life in a real way
and not just something I know about? Let's look at the Paschal Mystery in general terms;
the Paschal Mystery is basically the process of dying and rising, death and new life. We
see this all around us and in our own lives.
For example, we experience the process of dying and rising each year as we go through
the different seasons. Summer is a time of vibrancy and life, which then gives way to fall,
when leaves on the trees die and fall away and many plants seem to die. Winter comes
and with it the frost and chill that seem to halt all growth and life. But after winter, when it
seemed as if everything had died away, spring arrives. New life surrounds us. Buds and
flowers begin to push through the once-frozen ground, and plants. The bare branches of
trees begin to show signs of new leaves.
Another example within nature is a process that many park rangers use, for example:
certain areas are set on fire in order to improve the habitat for plants and wildlife. It's hard
to believe that from the charred tree trunks and withered, blackened brush can come a
healthy ecosystem with stronger trees and plants. But that's exactly what happens.
We are a part of nature too. Not only do we experience the seasons and see the process
of dying and rising, we also have our own and risings. Sometimes these are obvious—
for example, a grandparent dies or a baby is born. But other dyings and risings are less
obvious. An experience of dying might be when you have an argument with a friend that
leaves you feeling upset, or you see a homeless mother and child and don't know what to
do to help. An experience of rising might be reconciling with someone you hurt or who
hurt you, talking with your family about the homeless mother and child and discovering
that an organization like the St. Vincent de Paul Society has the people and the resources to care for people who are homeless. These are some of the dyings and risings
that we experience every day.
Now when we look at the Paschal Mystery in the context of our religious beliefs and the
life of Jesus Christ, we come to a deeper meaning of dying and rising. Jesus Christ's
passion, death, Resurrection, and Ascension are the ultimate event of dying and rising,
of death and new life. We learn from Jesus that new life can come from death, that we
can find meaning in tough times, that there really is light in the darkness. We learn that
all life has this rhythm of dying and rising and that God is with us in good times and in
bad. Christ's experience of suffering, death, and new life has forever changed us and
given us a different way of living. Death no longer has the last word. Plus, when we
encounter tough times, we have the comfort of knowing that God has “been there, done
that” and the power of hope that new life will come from death. Becoming conscious of
our own dyings and risings helps us have a greater sense of compassion for others and
a greater willingness to reach out.
As we celebrate Easter, this Great Feast of our faith, the Paschal Mystery, let us think
about our own life. What is a dying or rising that we have experienced during our journey
for the preparation of Easter, this past few week, this past year? Reflect on that experience in light of the event of Jesus Christ's passion, death, Resurrection, and Ascension.
Easter 2016
Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Risen Christ,
This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad, Alleluia! Alleluia!
Saint Paul tells us that In Christ Jesus you are a new creation! Today we know with the mind of faith and feel in
our hearts filled with joy how true that is and whence comes this wondrous and unique gift. It is God’s gift that
shows the boundless love He has for us when in the fullness of time He sent His Son, born of a woman. Without
the obedient love of the Son who became one like us in all things but sin, we could never have been saved in the
extraordinary way that in fact we are saved. We have been saved by one like us. That means that all we are and
all that we experience on this earth has been embraced by Jesus, the God-Man. He alone could save us as Son
of God. He alone, as fully human as we all are, could transform us, with whom He shares our humanity, by
offering us the way to share in His divinity.
Nailed to the cross, He overcame that ancient curse of universal death. For His death became the passage way
that destroys death and opens the path to eternal life for us and for all humankind. Now He breaks the bonds of
death by breaking forth from the tomb in His glorified state. Now the angels can say to the first apostles, Why look
among the dead for one who is living? He is not here among the dead! He has risen as He said!
Nicodemus once asked Jesus How can a person once grown old be born again? Surely he cannot reenter his
mother’s womb and be born again, can he? No, Nicodemus, that is true. But Jesus has made the Holy Sepulchre
His tomb to be the womb from which He comes forth to the glorified state that He shares with us. We who have
entered into the font of Baptism and emerged from the waters of Baptism are His new creation sharing the life of
the One Who today we truly proclaim God’s Son, the Victor over sin and death, the Savior of all humankind.
As His new creation, Paul rightly calls us Ambassadors of Christ. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, on this Easter
Day as we rejoice, I would like to call us all to re-commit ourselves to being Ministers of Reconciliation in our
families and our communities but especially in our Church and in our nation. Too many members of our Church
engage in polemic and seek to divide us as if bishops are persecutors of the laity or consecrated women and men
are at odds with priests and pastors. These attitudes and these divisions deny the new creation the Risen Christ
has given us. Our nation has sunk into a new low in public discourse when political leaders and pressure
groups ridicule and label one another or accuse those who disagree with the prevailing forces as being “haters”
and “phobic”.
May all of us on Easter Sunday, in the presence of the Risen Christ, at Mass, in our homes and in our hearts, put
aside those attitudes and commit ourselves to the ministry of reconciliation, eschewing the tawdry and the
degrading, and re-affirming the respect and dignity of all, for HE came to be the Savior of all Humankind and
today in our hearts and in our world, we proclaim
JESUS CHRIST IS RISEN AND HE IS LORD FOREVER AND EVER. AMEN!

CUARESMA- Tiempo De La Misericordia De Dios (parte 2)
Por Rev. Johnny R. Mendonca

WHY I WISH TO BE CATHOLIC …
MEET THOSE PARTICIPATING AT OUR PARISH IN THE
RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS
also known as
R.C.I.A.
Their spiritual journey began long
before today. Each, in his or her
own way, felt a ‘tug on their heart.’
Was it a special calling, someone
knocking on the door to their heart?
God, the Father, was calling; Jesus
knocking on their heart and the Holy
Spirit inspiring them to say YES and so they
opened their heart! At this the Vigil of all Vigils,
they received the Sacraments of Initiation.
BAPTISM - and the pouring of water
signifies new life. With the Sign of the
Cross blessing ourselves with holy
water upon entering for Mass we are
reminded of our baptismal vows.
What are our thoughts as witnesses of the waters
flowing at the font that was used at earlier baptisms held in our beautiful church nearly 100 years
ago?
CONFIRMATION - of their faith acknowledging
the beliefs and teachings of our one,
holy and apostolic church in a
sanctuary where thousands stood before as the breath of the Holy Spirit
filled them with love and His gifts.
Pentecost Sunday is in 50 days. Do
we sense the Spirit as witnesses to this holy
moment?
HOLY EUCHARIST - receiving their
first Holy Communion and becoming a
“living” tabernacle of Christ Jesus as do
we all when we receive His Most
Precious Body and Blood at Mass. His
Light shines in each and every one.
Are we moved within our heart as we do this in
memory of Him?

Easter Vigil answering God’s call! And our Parish
Family united in prayer again are witnesses as the

celebrating the Resurrection of Our Lord; and joyfully welcome our brothers and sisters to our Faith
Community!
As a Faith Community we continue in our role as
witnesses of conversion by our support of our
newly baptized and for our adults receiving their
Confirmation on Pentecost Sunday. We resume

When plagued by my fragility and all my limitations,
Lord Jesus, you say:
Blessed are the poor in spirit; the kingdom of God is
theirs.
When sadness takes hold of me, Lord Jesus, you say:
Blessed are the sorrowing; they shall be consoled.
When tormented by my insecurity and my inadequacy,
Lord Jesus, you say:
Blessed are the lowly; they shall inherit the earth.
When lost and unsure about where to turn, Lord Jesus you say;
Your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
When fretful and obsessive about so many things, Lord Jesus, you say:
Do not worry about what you are to eat or drink or use for
clothing.
When lethargy and listlessness take over, Lord Jesus, you say:
Seek first the Father's Kingship over you and all will be
given you.
When worry about the future paralyzes me, Lord Jesus, you say:
Let tomorrow take care of itself.
When I feel helpless and forsaken, Lord Jesus, you say:
Ask and you will receive.
When shame and guilt overwhelm me, Lord Jesus, you say:
I have come to call, not the self-righteous, but sinners.
When engulfed by anxiety and fear, Lord Jesus, you say:
Do not be afraid of anything.
When my life lacks any purpose or direction, Lord Jesus, you say:
Follow Me.
When I believe I am worthless and a total disappointment,
Lord Jesus, you say:
You are worth more than an entire flock of sparrows.
When weighed down by the addictions of my life, Lord Jesus, you say:
Come to Me, all you who are weary and find life burdensome.
When the harshness and ruthlessness of life assail me,
Lord Jesus, you say:
I am gentle and humble of heart; your souls will find rest.
When it seems I have only a little to offer, Lord Jesus, you say:
To the one who has, more will be given.
When I crave approval and fear the judgment of others,
Lord Jesus, you say:
Whoever becomes lowly like a little child is of greatest
importance in the kingdom of God.
When I'm feeling discouraged because of my body,
Lord Jesus, you say:
Remain in Me.
When my situation seems hopeless, Lord Jesus, you say:
For God, all things are possible.
When I fear that my life is irrelevant and insignificant,
Lord Jesus, you say:
The last shall be first.
When I'm afraid to face the truth about myself, Lord Jesus, you say:
Whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.
When exhausted by tedium, tiresomeness, and stress,
Lord Jesus, you say:
Come by yourselves to an out of the-way place and rest a
little.
When terrified by the raging storms of life, Lord Jesus, you say:
Do not be afraid; it is I.
When I am full of doubt, with no one to depend on,
Lord Jesus, you say:
Everything is possible to one who trusts.
When it's hard to persevere and I'm tempted to give up,
Lord Jesus, you say:
By patient endurance you will save your lives.
When bitterness and resentment poison my heart, Lord Jesus, you say:
If the Son frees you, you will truly be free.
When I feel like I belong to no one, Lord Jesus, you say:
I know My sheep and My sheep know Me.
When I see nothing but my wrongdoing and failures,
Lord Jesus, you say:
Do not let your heart be troubled: have faith in Me.
When swayed by moralism, relativism, and nihilism,
Lord Jesus, you say:
I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
When I'm feeling cut off, alienated, and alone, Lord Jesus, you say:
I am the Vine and you are the branches.
When duped by self-absorption and self-obsessiveness,
Lord Jesus, you say:
Apart from Me you can do nothing.
When despairing because of isolation and alienation,
Lord Jesus, you say:
I will not leave you orphans.
When downcast from feeling friendless and betrayed,
Lord Jesus, you say:
I call you friends.
When I refuse to believe that anyone could love me,
Lord Jesus, you say:
It was not you who chose Me, it was I who chose you.
When tempted to apathy, cynicism, and dread, Lord Jesus, you say:
Ask and you shall receive, that your joy may be full.
When polluted by the hatred and violence of the world,
Lord Jesus, you say:
Take courage; I have overcome the world.
When I think that happiness is nothing but a delusion,
Lord Jesus, you ask me:
Do you love Me?
When my life reaches a dead-end and I lack all desire,
Lord Jesus, you ask me:
Do you love Me?
When I decide that life has no meaning, Lord Jesus, you ask me:
Do you love Me?
Yes, Lord Jesus, I do! Lord Jesus, you say:
Live on in My love.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit
O Holy Spirit, soul of my soul, I adore you.
Enlighten, guide, strengthen and console me. Tell
me what I ought to do and command me to do it. I
promise to be submissive in everything you ask of
me and to accept all that you permit to happen to
me, only show me what is Your holy will. Let us
pray that our young people will come to a deeper
appreciation of the presence of the Holy Spirit in
their lives. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your
faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created
and you will renew the face of the earth. Strengthen
and protect by your kindness the faith of all who
believe in you. We ask this through our Lord Jesus
Christ, your son, who lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen!

Of Mercy
During this
Year of
Mercy
Blessed are
the Poor in
Spirit for
theirs is the
Kingdom
of Heaven
When we are Poor in Spirit, we
don’t have to trust in a lot of
things. We trust in God alone.
God always loves us because
God is Love. He constantly tries to reach us
and never gives up on us. He allows many
things to happen to us, only to bring us closer
to Him. At first we do not understand—it
seems like the end but after, we realize it was
all for our good. We realize that His grace is
with us and we see the light—Jesus—who has
come to enlighten our minds and hearts.
May Easter remind you of the love God showers on
all of us
and inspire
us to share
His love
and Mercy
with
everyone.
