Student Exhibitions - Lawndale Art Center
Welcome to the 27th Annual Lawndale Art Center Día de los Muertos
celebrations. I hope that you all will join me in commemorating this rich and
lively Mexican holiday that pays tribute to the souls of departed family and
friends. Taking a moment to remember our loved ones and honoring their
lives, reminds us that no challenge is too difficult when we are surrounded
by family, friends and community.
Since the first exhibition of retablos, Día de los Muertos at Lawndale
has grown into a multi-day festival that includes the exhibition, Gala/
Silent Auction, Family Day Fiesta, Musical Ofrenda and educational
workshops. These events reach out to diverse populations in Houston
and commemorate the traditions of this vibrant Mexican holiday that
celebrates family, life and community. We thank the many organizations
who collaborate with us to make these programs possible.
We send our deepest appreciation to all of the artists who picked up
an 8” x 10” piece of sheet metal and transformed them into almost 250
amazing, distinct and often amusing works of contemporary art. Their
donation of these works in support of Lawndale is deeply appreciated.
Our thanks also goes to the students and teachers from 25 area schools (a
record number!) who devoted the time to learn about Día de los Muertos
and Mexican folklife traditions. We are grateful to the teachers who inspire
so much creativity in these bright young artists.
I have run out of ways to say thanks to the “small, but mighty” Lawndale
staff, our Board of Directors, volunteers and finally, the sponsors of this
event. Without their heartfelt commitment to our organization, Lawndale
simply would not exist. We thank our fabulous chairs and Main Street
neighbors Lane and Bob Schultz and their awesome Host Committee, who
helped introduce Lawndale to many new friends. I consider myself one of
the luckiest people in Houston to work with all of these wonderful people in
such a generous community. Thank you for making 27 years of Día de los
Muertos celebrations at Lawndale such a success and so much fun.
