Are you ready? Ready or not, Christmas is coming! This is the season of
the year when we prepare for the Christ child. What gift do you want to
give Jesus this year? Perhaps it’s a gift of kindness or patience or service
to others? Maybe you’d like be more regular about your devotion time.
We have 26 days in Advent to get that gift ready. But for many, the days
of December are so full that they pass by without notice and before we
know it, it’s Christmas Eve. After all, there is so much to do: shopping,
baking, wrapping, writing and sending cards. But don’t let the commercial side of the season rob you of the spiritual joy of the journey to
Christmas.
Advent, which began last Sunday, is the first season of the Christian year
and includes the four Sundays before Christmas. Advent (meaning
“coming”) is a gift in itself; an opportunity for us to draw closer to God
and one another opening our lives to the Holy Spirit. Advent is the season to prepare as a church and in our own individual lives to receive the
miracle of Christmas. It’s also an opportunity to get our gifts ready for
Jesus by giving back to God and others.

From the Pastor (Cont’d) . . .
As a church, some of the youth got a jump on the season by participating in Operation Christmas Child and/or by decorating the
church for the season. This Friday night at 7 pm, the joint Cantata between Kanapaha Church and Faith Church will be offered
in our Sanctuary and then again in Faith Presbyterian Church in
Melrose this Sunday at 3 pm. Thank you for those who are singing, leading and supporting them with their presence and worship. The Adult Sunday School Class has begun a special Advent Study, “Held in God’s Grace” that will be offered through
Dec. 20th. Thank you for those who are leading; it’s always a
greater blessing to lead a study than to attend. Why? You learn
more in the preparation. Thank you for those who faithfully participate in an effort to grow in the their faith.
The church has purchased Advent Devotional guides for you to use each day during Advent in your private
time of devotion. You can find them in the sanctuary on the table in the narthex or on the back table close
to the kitchen door in Memorial Hall. If you prefer on-line devotionals, perhaps you’d like using the on-line
Advent devotion, Follow the Star. You can find it at www.d365.org/. Read them alone or with your family.
Consider lighting an Advent wreath at home during devotion time as a way to reclaim the holiness of the
season. One you’ve been filled, find a way to pour out a blessing each day on those you know and even
those you don’t. Want to make God smile? Practice a random act of kindness anonymously for each day of
the season.
Find your own Advent rhythm to prepare so that when Christmas does arrive, not only will you be able to
more fully appreciate and welcome the miracle of the birth of our Savior, you will have something to give
the King!
In the joy of preparation,
Pastor Dawn

Christmas Cantata . . .
Come to the Manger, a Christmas Cantata, written and arranged by Mark Hayes, will be presented in two performances by the combined choirs of Faith Presbyterian Church of
Melrose and Kanapaha Presbyterian Church on Friday, December 4, at 7pm in the KPC Sanctuary, and on Sunday, December 6, at 3pm in the FPC Sanctuary. KPC Choir Director, Erica Williams, will direct the performance, and FPC
Choir Director, Laurel Lamme, will be the pianist.
An inventive combination of traditional carols and spirituals
with narration, the first half of the cantata presents The Nativity of Jesus, and the second half presents the Visit of the Wise Men culminated with the
final medley, Christmas in the Manger.
Performance time is approximately 40 minutes, and all are invited to attend as we celebrate
the joyous birth of Christ this Christmas season. KPC will host a reception for all in the
Fellowship Hall at the end of the performance.
Christmas Joy Special Offering . . .
The Christmas Joy Offering is received in December and is one of the Larger Church Mission offerings. Fifty percent of it is distributed to assistance programs for retired and active church workers and 50%
supports racial and ethnic schools and colleges through the General Assembly. There will be special offering envelopes available or just mark your check for the Christmas Joy Offering.
On Sunday, December 20th, the Christmas Joy Offering will be received at both worship services.

Advent Study
Held in God’s Grace
In this fast-paced world it seems odd to say that we celebrate
Advent by waiting, but this waiting is far more than a passive
submission to time. Advent is a time of active preparation for a
whole new way of life ushered in by Jesus' birth. This foursession study introduces four major themes that help Christians
move meaningfully and patiently through the season of Advent:
waiting, accepting, journeying, and birthing

The CH&CM committee would like to thank everyone who helped with the 2nd Annual All Saints Day
Cemetery Tour on October 31st!
In the weeks before the tour, the remaining 32 Unknown graves were measured out, marked and Unknown headstones set by Karen Kirkman, Kaley Behl, Mike Kirkman, Tom Jordan and Charlie Botsford.
In response to our press release, TV20 News, GTN News and the Gainesville Sun all covered the setting of the last Unknown markers on October

fold! The attendance for the All Saints Day Cemetery Tour was 75 including helpers and actors. Net income raised was $555! This year we had 14
actors, 9 of whom were descended from the people they portrayed. TV20
News covered the Tour. The All Saints Day service was well attended. Williams-Thomas Funeral Home and Historic Cemeteries (Mary Homick's cemetery photography) had exhibits. And Charlie Botsford and Karen
Kirkman held headstone cleaning demonstrations.
Thanks to members of the congregation who served as actors: Loretha Cleveland (Daphne Kelley), Jim
and Pat Chesnut (JD and Maria Young) and Kaley Behl (Mary S.Taylor).
Planning for the next historical fundraiser, the Heart, Home 7 History Tour on March 12th, will begin
soon.

On Saturday, Nov 21st, KPC and The Church of the
Latter Day Saints partnered with Habitat for Humanity
to rehab a house on the northeast side of Gainesville.
The family who will eventually move into this home
(hopefully in January) were there working alongside
all the volunteers. Thank you to Loretha Cleveland,
Jack McCleary, Mary Searle and Sally Walker (and
Allison and Dawn, two of Sally's friends) for coming
to work. Also thank you to Judy Wibblesman and Rick
Klopp for bringing a delicious lunch of hot dogs, kielbasa, healthy slaw, baked beans, chips and Martha
Botsford's fabulous cookies. Thanks to Judy for coordinating the lunch.
It was a great time to do good work and to meet young people from another faith community and learn
more about them personally and their faith practices. We also had great weather.
Thanks to God, it was a great day!
Thanksgiving Basket Drive . . .
The Mission Committee wants to thank everyone who
gave to the Thanksgiving Basket drive. We served 13
families including more than 55 people. Each family received a turkey and a half of ham with all the fixings. What a bounty and a generous spirit from all those
at KPC. We worked with Wiles Elementary school to
identify the families most in need and one of the children at the school was asked what she was doing for
Thanksgiving and she said "We are going to have a
feast." It is because of you and your giving
hearts. Thank you.
