Another month has just sped by in a blink of an eye. We definitely can’t
complain about the mild winter we had!
Before the winter break, students signed up for our annual LCS drama
production. This year’s play is a comedy called, “Is There a Doctor in the
House”. Ms. Elek is directing this production and running practices on
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:00 (as well as some occasional Fridays).
The date of the performance will be announced at a later date.
With the winter season coming to an end, we congratulate all our hockey
players for an entertaining season! We wish those teams who are in the final
playoff games, good luck!
Badminton season has now officially started at LCS. Mr. Lindsay is
coaching the Senior team and running practices on Mondays and
Wednesdays from 5:00-6:30. Mrs. de Graauw is coaching the Bantam players
and practices are being held Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30-5:00.
There is a Bantam tournament being hosted by Mankota School on March
11 and 12.
Due to Gravelbourg School being under construction, they are not able
to host the Elementary Track Meet this year. Our staff has decided to step up
and host this event again. We have scheduled the date for May 26; the
alternate date is June 9. We know, when the time comes, our Lightning
families will make it a memorable event!
March 13-19 is the Lafleche and District Music Festival; they are
celebrating its 50th anniversary. We wish all our musicians, singers and choral
speakers the best of luck, as they prepare for this big event! We would like to
remind parents to please inform the school when your child will be absent
from school during their performances.
Our Career Guidance counsellor, Jeff Feely, will be in our school March
21. He will be working with the Grade 10 and 11 students. Mr. Feely helps
students explore the options of all the different types of careers and meets
individually with students to help guide them and answer their questions.
Report Cards for K to Grade 12 students go out the third week in March.
Our Student-Led Conferences (SLC’s) will be held in the evenings of March
16 and 17. The website to book your conferences will be opened on March
7 (login information is on page 4 of this newsletter and will also be emailed
to parents/guardians later this week). Parents will also have an opportunity
to give feedback about our school in our annual Tell Them From Me Surveys
at this time.
Research tells us that there is a direct correlation between attendance,
reading comprehension and graduation rates. In other words, regular
attendance is vital to the academic success of a student, so please make
every effort to limit days away from school. Just a friendly reminder to all
parents to please contact the school when your child will be absent. Our
attendance records are legal documents; therefore, it is important that we
have accurate data.

The Canada Goal Presentation!
Shout out and thank you to:
-
On Thursday, February 4, a presentation
was held for all Kindergarten to Grade 12
students at Lafleche Central School. The
presentation was called, “The Canada
Goal Presentation – A Big Learning
Experience for Small Schools, Too!” with
guest speaker, Andre Genthom. The focus
of the presentation was on student
learning and knowledge:
- Inspiring individuals to want to
learn
- Inspiring the desire to learn
- Inspiring individuals to be the best
they can be
Students attended sessions throughout
the day and ended the day with a final
team building session. Andre taught us to,
“Focus on what you do and make
yourself the best you can be!” Always
remember that success starts with you.
Believe in yourself! Focus your brain, and
tell yourself that you’re already
successful!
You
are:
AWESOME,
AMAZING, BEAUTIFUL, SMART, and
VALUABLE!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN
Throughout the month of February the
Prekindergarten
class
was
busy
exploring/learning
about
family,
friendships and love. Our classroom was
very lucky before Valentine’s Day
because a special ‘Love Bug’ would
surprise us with books and treats. While we
explore friendship we have been talking a
lot about being caring, kind and respectful
to others around us. Anti-Bullying day was
on February 24 so we spent some time
discussing
the
difference
between
someone who may be being rude, mean
or a bully. It is a hard concept to
understand but when we continue to learn
and discuss issues it starts to make more
sense. We had the opportunity to role
play in our classroom post office, making
letters and addressing envelopes to our
family and friends. On Tuesday, February
9 we had our “Family Day”, making cards
and addressing envelopes to someone
special. With such a beautiful day, we
walked over to the Canada Post Office to
visit Wendy and Lois. We were lucky to
have been given a guided tour and had
the opportunity to stamp and mail the
letters we made. The Prekindergarten
class sends out a huge thank-you to
Wendy and Lois. They did an amazing job!

KINDERGARTEN
The Kindergarten class has had an
amazing month exploring love, family and
friendship. How we treat one another
needs to come from the heart in a kind
and caring manner. Learning to treat
others the way we want to be treated
(Golden Rule). February 24 was AntiBullying Day so we spent some time
working towards understanding when
people are being rude, mean or a
bully. Our Kindergarten class will continue
to work towards the anti-bullying
stand/movement for the remainder of the
school year. In Science, we have been
exploring magnets, understanding why
magnets attract or repel objects. In Math,
the shape and space strand has provided
many positive and exciting learning
experiences
that
are
hands
on
centered. Ask your child about some of
the 3-D shapes (sphere, cube, cone,
cylinder and rectangular prism). In ELA,
we continue to work on Jolly Phonics,
alliteration, letter formation, experimenting
with print, comprehension and reflection.
We have been working on moderate to
vigorous movement in PE to increase our
heart rate.

The LCS cosmetology students were in for a real treat when Caitlyn Dixon and Hillary Moen
visited our school on Wednesday, February 24. Caitlyn, a fashion and makeup artist, shared
her story about her love of doing makeup as well as her journey from high school
cosmetology, her training at the Blanche MacDonald Centre in Vancouver, her L’Oréal by
the Brush experiences which took her all the way to the Cannes Film Festival in Paris, and her
upcoming move to Montreal, Quebec to further her career. Caitlyn’s cousin, Hillary,
accompanied her to Lafleche and was Caitlyn’s model for the afternoon. Caitlyn’s positive
and passionate demeanor enabled the students to ask questions and share their personal
and career interests in cosmetology. Tana Rowe, who is the PAA Coordinator with PSSD, was
on hand to film Caitlyn’s demonstration which will be shared with other cosmetology students
throughout the Division. We would like to sincerely thank Caitlyn, Hillary and Tana for a great
afternoon! Below are some of the student responses to the presentation:
Emma H – I liked when Caitlyn explained to us the order we should be applying makeup.
Emily C – I liked Caitlyn’s presentation because she was really inspirational. I learned that
there is more in the makeup industry than what I was aware of.
Rikki H – I learned that you are supposed to apply foundation after the eye shadow.
Samantha F – I learned about the different skin types.
Ciera – I enjoyed learning about the different skin types.
Mariah – I thought Cailtyn was an extremely nice person and I hope to be like her someday.
Jaelynne – I think Cailtyn definitely inspired everyone.

“March 21st, 2016 marks the 11th anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) and each year the voice
of people with down syndrome, and those who live and work with them, grows louder. We want to get people
talking about WDSD on March 21. We can do this if we all wear socks...BUT NOT JUST ANY SOCKS…wear our
official “LOTS OF SOCKS” socks, other brightly coloured socks, long socks, printed socks, 1 sock…maybe even 3
socks for 3 chromosomes. If you don’t normally wear socks then wear them.”
https://worlddownsyndromeday.org/2016-campaign
In recognition of World Down Syndrome Day, we will be ordering the official “LOTS OF SOCKS” socks to wear
on that day. Proceeds from the sale of these socks help fund Down Syndrome programs and research. We will
also be recognizing the day by having a special assembly at lunch. More details to follow.
If you are interested in purchasing LOTS OF SOCKS socks, they are available for $6 a pair and the colors are
random. You are more than welcome to purchase more than one pair, and to wear them on days other than
March 21st. Orders MUST be in by Thursday March 3rd at 9:00am to guarantee we receive them by March 21st.
Please make cheques payable to Lafleche Central School. If you have any questions, please contact Ms.
Pfeifer at the school 472-3192.
