Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the nurse will be able to:
I) Determine the indications for limited ultrasound examinations in the
pregnancy help clinic setting.
2) Provide appropriate patient education regarding the limited ultrasound
procedure, its purpose and its limitations.
3) Understand and apply the basic principles of ultrasound physics,
instrumentation and imaging techniques.
4) Document ultrasound fmdings in the patient's record and communicate
findings to responsible health care provider.
5) Identify the policies, procedures and protocols necessary to provide
excellence in nursing care.
6) Evaluate the patient's response to ultrasound findings and implement
appropriate nursing intervention based on that response.

PURPOSE OF COURSE
This course is designed to equip the leadership and staff of
pregnancy help medical clinics to achieve excellence in the
provision of ultrasound services to clients.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is a three-day course with two tracks, medical and management, to address both medical
and administrative concerns. On day one, both tracks meet together. Days two and three focus
on workshops designed specifically for each track.

Workshops include: legal guidelines, obstetrical

fundamentals, nursing accountability, ultrasound physics,
ultrasound instrumentation, documenting fetal cardiac activity
and documenting fetal biometry. And best of all, there is
hands-on, live OB scanning in different stages of pregnancy.
MEDICAL COURSE CONTENT
This course follOWSthe guidelines from the Association of Women's
Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) and the American
College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) for training in limited
obstetrical ultrasound. Provider approved by the California Board of
Registered Nursing, Provider # xxxxxx for 18.8 Contact Hours.
Note: The Basic Course is the beginning of ultrasound training for nurses to
become competent in their scanning abilities. NIFLA recommends that after this
training, an additional 50-75 supervised scans should be performed by each
nurse. Information on on-site and other training opportunities is presented at
each course.
