Welcome to the summer edition of Brook House News
I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new residents Henry and Kenneth. We
hope you are settling in at Brook House and that your stay will be happy.
I am delighted to announce that carers Margie and Tintu are expecting their babies
soon and are at present on maternity leave. We hope that everything goes well and
look forward to seeing them visit us.
JULY 2014
GOLD STANDARD FRAMEWORK
Brook House is continuing to improve our
GSF procedures. Meetings are going well
and the team are working hard in
conjunction with the Princess Alice Hospice.
AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS
We have been given a 5* rating by
Environmental Health and also a 5* rating
by the Food Standards Agency.
Carehome.co.uk held awards and we are
pleased to say that Brook House came
fourth in the London Award section.
Congratulations to all staff as this was a
joint effort.
EVENTS AND CELEBRATIONS
Much has happened since our last
newsletter. We started with the celebration
of St Patrick’s Day with an Irish meal and
music
We celebrated Mother’s Day with families
and friends.
Everyone enjoyed the
entertainment by Michael Grinter. A Special
heart shaped cake and cupcakes were baked
and decorated by our staff. Enjoyed by all.
Our Easter Tea Party was a good excuse to
enjoy the early warm spring weather in the
garden. All the decorations were made by
the residents with help of the Activity team.
We had a magician to entertain us and
everyone tried their hand at learning magic
tricks. A raffle, guess the weight of the cake
and guess the number of eggs on a cake
were held to help raise funds for Resident’s
activities.
FIFA World Cup Ceremony: Brook House
was decorated with the flags of all the
participating countries. A football shaped
cake was cut by Mr Cecil Gittins to kick off
the party.
Strawberry Tea Party:
This was held in
conjunction with the start of Wimbledon.
Residents and their families were served
strawberries and cream together with
traditional scones. A beautiful strawberry
cake was baked and donated to us by Alma
Afonseca, daughter of Maria. All the tables
were personalised with reservation cards
and seating arrangements. The residents
enjoyed searching for their seats.
OUTINGS
At Brook House our aim is to ensure that
everyone has the opportunity to enjoy
experiences outside of the home. Taking
residents on outings to local parks, garden
centres and historic places is exceedingly
rewarding, especially when you see the
residents reactions to these trips. Outings
have included trips to Richmond and Bushey
Parks, Hampton Court Palace and Garson’s
Farm. We share our outings with Hamilton
Nursing Home, Kamal is the Manager. It is a
great opportunity for social gatherings. We
like to give each outing a sense of purpose
and at Isabelle Plantation it was feeding the
ducks and enjoyed identifying trees and
flowers. We had a picnic in the Hampton
Court Gardens. Taking the residents out of
the care home environment creates
numerous benefits for each individual.
A Residents/Relatives Meeting was held in
March which covered all aspects of the
home. Should anyone require a copy
please see Mary-Jane at reception. A date
and time is yet to be set for our next
meeting.
We recently celebrated birthdays for Joan
Chaplin, Eileen Kelly,, Isabelle Turner Angela
Cooper, Betty Spiller and Harry Henning’s
90th birthday.
If any resident/relative has any special
requests for something that would make a
resident’s birthday that extra bit special
then please let Lucky, Sukh, MJ or Kamal
know and we will do our best to oblige.
SOCIAL ACTIVITES
Our residents continue to enjoy a full and
varied programme of Activities.
We
recently introduced Elda-Dance, the first
Monday of each month. The residents
really enjoy interacting with Emma.
ENERGY EFFICIENT ACTIVITIES
Turning Trash to Treasure: Our residents
took part in an environmentally friendly
recycled art activity. Photo frames were
created by using jigsaw puzzle pieces. This
was a fun way for our residents to take part
in reclycing redundant objects. Enjoyed by
all.
FUTURE PLANS – UP AND COMING EVENTS
We are looking forward to our Summer
Garden Party on 19th July. Hopefully we will
have sunny weather, Dave Mac will be
providing music throughout the afternoon
and residents, families, friends and staff will
have an enjoyable afternoon.
Halloween and Guy Fawkes night will be
celebrated in October and November.
Remembrance Day this year will honour the
hundred years since the start of the 1st
World War and
we will celebrate
appropriately.
CONDOLENCES
Our condolences go out to the families and
friends of Ray, Christine and Sally who
recently passed away. They are greatly
missed by all here at Brook.
