B’N AI SHOLOM NEWS LET TER
From the Rabbi
Rachamim/Compassion – not only a feeling, a course of action
"Nobody asked who was Jewish and who was not. Nobody asked where you were from. Nobody asked who
your father was or if you could pay. They just accepted each of us, taking us in with warmth, sheltering children,
often without their parents—children who cried in the night from nightmares." *
—Elizabeth Koenig-Kaufman, a former child refugee in Le Chambon
The people of the town of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon in south-central France were responsible for saving
thousands of Jewish lives during WWII. The pastors and families of the area welcomed Jews who were freed
from Marseilles camps by the efforts of local Quakers. At the risk of the lives of their families the residents of Le
Chambon sheltered Jews and other “non-desirables” in their homes. When Vichy patrols came by, they sent
the Jews into the woods to hide and called them when the danger had passed.
In Judaism the values of love and compassion are understood not only as emotional responses but as active
responses. Our love of God is expressed by taking care of God’s creatures. Similarly, compassion is about
action. It begins with empathy – How would I feel if I were this person? Nevertheless, compassion is not fully
realized until we have DONE something for this person.
The Protestants of Le Chambon had a long history of persecution by the Catholic majority. This experience most
probably enlivened their empathy with the Jews in that time of our persecution by the Nazis and by the Vichy
government of France. The remarkable thing is that they weren’t content to have a fellow feeling – they saved
lives, even at the risk of their own.
In a Jewish sense, true Rachamim/Compassion is not just feeling, but ACTING on another's behalf.
We will be studying Rachamim/Compassion in the next installment of our series of classes on Mussar - Jewish
Self-Discipline, or Soul Learning. Try it out. Sunday, November 15:
9:00am – Morning Minyan (weekday prayer service)
10:00am – Put together the boxes we will use for our Thanksgiving Project next week.
11:00am – Study Rachamim with us in our Mussar class based on Alan Morinis’ book Everyday Holiness – The
Jewish Spiritual Path of Mussar.
Let’s see how we can develop our capacity for Rachamim,
for Compassion, and make a difference for others in our
community.
Wishing you the experience of developing your Rachamim in
this season of thanksgiving.

Rachamim - Compassion
The next installment of our series of classes on Mussar
True Compassion in a Jewish sense is not just feeling,

Book Discussion 10:30 AM
RSVP for the Brunch to the office
Discussion facilitated by Deedee Mufson.
“The Kill Artist,” by Daniel Silva.
There are two books available in the office. You may also
order a book from Amazon or check with Cabell County Library for the book.
Tightly written thrillers like The Marching Season have made bestselling novelist Daniel Silva a favorite
of readers everywhere. In The Kill Artist, he paints an absorbing portrait of a reluctant hero’s attempt to
thwart an old enemy to preserve a precarious peace. After the assassination of his wife and son, Gabriel
Allon retires from his brutal anti-terrorist career and loses himself in his previous cover job: art
restoration. But when Tariq al-Hourani, the Palestinian terrorist responsible for his family’s death,
begins a killing spree designed to destroy Middle East peace talks, Gabriel once again slips
into the shadowy world of international intrigue.
In a global game of hide-and-seek, the motives of Gabriel and Tariq soon become more personal than political. Filled with vivid action and a fascinating cast of supporting characters.

B’nai Sholom Train To Be Placed In The Temple Soon, Thanks To The Polan Family!
Earlier this year, local artists were picked to decorate trains that were later placed around downtown Huntington
to be auctioned off to benefit our local Hoops Family Children's Hospital. Several members of the Polan Family
generously submitted the highest bid for the B’nai Sholom train, which was decorated by Rabbi Jean Eglinton and
Temple Bar Mitzvah student, Noah Compton. It was decoupaged with photos of B’nai Sholom’s life throughout the
years.
The gift of the Train will be appreciated by the Congregation for many years. Our sincere thanks to The Polan Family:
Sidney Polan and Rick McLAughlin, Marilyn Polan and David King, Lake and Louise Polan, Annette Polan, Lois Anne
Polan and Rosilyn Polan. We will proudly display your gift downstairs so everyone gets a close look. Then we will
move it to one of the Sunday school rooms that we are going to remodel as a museum and display area.

Thanks so much to our
Rummage Sale helpers!
Rummage Sale chairpersons Marilyn
Cohen and Barbara Silverstein would
like to thank everyone who helped
set up the rummage sale and worked
the day of the sale.
This was a “double’ rummage sale,
so their was a lot more merchandise
to set up than usual.
It never could have been
accomplished with out the many
helpers who came and worked on it.
Many Thanks!
