Roundabout Construction Update
East Baton Rouge Parish Dept.
of Public Works: The Joor Road at
Gurney Road intersection improvement
has been in the initial utility relocation
phase of construction. This utility work
had been scheduled to be complete by
April 19, 2015; however this work,
which must be performed by the
private utility companies, has yet to
be completed. This roadway had been
scheduled to be closed this past Monday
June 1, 2015; however this was not done
to allow the final relocation work by ATT
and their contractor to be completed and
the new services put on line. Based on
the latest discussions with the utility
companies, they anticipate this work
to be complete by Monday June 8th.
While our contractor has been able to
move forward with some of the new
drainage work, his activities have been
restricted based on the existing utility
conflicts. Now that the utility work is

now in a position to allow our contractor
to proceed at full force.
It is anticipated that the road closure that was scheduled for Monday,
June 1st will now take place on Monday, June 8th; however close coordination
with ATT work crews will continue since we do not want to close the road
without the ability for the contractor to fully mobilize. We have also been
meeting with the contractor to review the construction phasing and sequences
to see what elements of work can be constructed concurrently so as not to
extend the construction schedule and to assure that the intersection can be
opened to traffic in advance of the upcoming start of school in early August,
weather permitting.

Last Friday EBRSO Detectives
arrested Luke Davis and Jennifer McNabb
at a vacant house on Greenwell Springs
Road. The two suspects were charged
with two counts of simple burglary,
burglary of an inhabited dwelling, theft
and property damage.
The initial burglary occurred on May
22, with a second burglary occurring
next door on May 28th. Based on a
description from one witness, and information provided by an associate,
the suspects were arrested at a vacant house on Friday.
Both McNabb and Davis admitted to committing or being present
at one or both of the burglaries, and were booked into parish prison.
Two Arrested in Car Burglaries
On Monday EBR Sheriff’s Office
received a report of a lost wallet.
While investigating the possible theft,
the EBRSO deputy found that the
complainant’s debit card had been
used at a local convenience store.
Surveillance video from the store led to
the suspects, Darryl Gros and Westley
Quesada, both of Central.
The two suspects were arrested for
simple burglary and unauthorized use of an access card. When interviewed,
the pair admitted to “car hopping” in multiple subdivisions. They would
park their truck and check for unlocked vehicles, keeping any valuables
they found. Both suspects were booked into parish prison.

Summer Reading Program
Did you know that regular
contact with print materials like
books, magazines and writing
games helps young children get
ready to read and helps raise
reading scores for older children?
Your East Baton Rouge Parish
Library sponsors a FREE Summer
Reading Program every summer
that’s designed to be a convenient
and fun way to encourage children
to read. This year’s theme is Every
Hero Has a Story, and we’re inviting
children ages 0-11 to visit their local
Library to enroll. So join the fun by
signing up your child in the Summer
Reading Program at any location
of your East Baton Rouge Parish
Library. Here’s what you need to
know before getting started:
• Young children, including babies
and students through age 11 can
register at any Library location
between May 26 and July 31.
• Younger children can be read to
by a guardian or older child; older
children can read for themselves.
See the rule sheet for minimum
requirements.
• Each child who completes the
Summer Reading Program will
receive a book bag with a free book
and coupons from local businesses.
The child will be entered into a
drawing for a $50 gift certificate or
school supply bag. Check with your
local Library to see which they will
have.
• We offer FREE entertainment and
crafts, along with books, magazines,
movies and recordings to check out.
• Children should visit the Library
regularly, if possible.
• If you are planning a group visit
to the Library, call the Children’s
Room staff for suggested dates and
times.
• Sign up and start reading!
Summer Reading isn’t
just for kids! Teens and
adults can also sign up
for the program through
any
EBR
Library
branch. Reading logs
will be available through
the end of July.

This program is open to entering

by BHE teachers, is planned to
excite and engage your child while
maintaining the rigorous academic
standards for which our community

CAPA Corner: Your
Favorite Day of the Week
What is your favorite day of
the week? Why is that day your
favorite day of the week?
My favorite day of the week
is Sunday.
Why?
Because
Sunday is the day I get to spend
time with my fellow believers in
Jesus Christ. Sunday is the day I
join with other believers to bring
worship to the One who gave His
life for mine. Each Sunday as I
join my congregation and I’m
reminded that I now know my sins
are forgiven in Him alone, I am
reconciled to God through Him
alone, and I am assured of eternal
life in heaven because of the work
accomplished by Him alone. The
“Him,” of course, is Jesus Christ
– the eternal, sinless Son of God.
Sunday is the day I learn more
about Jesus, worship Jesus, and
enjoy fellowship with those who
also know Jesus. Sunday is a very
special day. It is my favorite day
of the week.
Again, let me ask, what is your
favorite day of the week? Maybe
it is also Sunday, but for very
different reasons than mine. Many
look at Sundays and express, “that
is my day; I have worked hard all
week; I can do whatever I want on
Sunday.” That is true if you aren’t
a believer and follower of Jesus
Christ. But if you are a professing
believer and follower of Jesus
Christ, what are you doing on
Sundays? Are you captivated by
the world and its offerings? Are
you engaging in the ways of the
world on Sundays like hunting,
fishing, shopping, or going to
some sporting event instead of
going to church to worship the
One who gave His life for yours?
My encouragement to you, if
you truly believe that Jesus Christ
is the only way, the only truth,
and in Whom alone is eternal
life, then please be sure to spend
each Sunday in church. Spend
time worshiping the One Who
has changed your life forever,
and Who has changed where you
will spend eternity. There are a
number of churches in Central
where you will hear about Jesus
each Sunday. I encourage you
to find a church in Central that
teaches about Jesus as He is
revealed in the Bible. Spend your
time worshiping the One Who
loves you with an everlasting
love, and you, too, will find that
Sunday is your favorite day, too.
Don Hulsey,
Grace Presbyterian Church

Youth Group Coming to
Help Central Area Residents
From Blackwater Methodist Church
One of the wonderful things
about being a “connectional church”
is that we are, well, connectional.
That means that from time to
time we will have opportunities
to “connect” with other United
Methodist churches, even those
from other Annual Conferences.
This June will be one such time.
This same “connection” was made
in 2009.
During the week of June 14
– 20, a youth group and their adult
chaperones, 75 – 100 people from
the Central Texas Conference Youth
in Missions, will be staying here
at Blackwater United Methodist
Church. They will spend that week
, Monday – Friday, working in our
area. This is much like the kind of
work our youth do at Weekend of
the Cross each year. They will do
minor home repair – steps, porches,
sheds, doors, etc, - painting inside
and out, windows and screens, minor
roof repair and yard work to name a
few. They do not do major projects,
reroofing, plumbing and electrical,
except for wheel chair ramps. The
only qualification is that the person
for whom they do the work must
own their own home. They do not
work on rental property.
If you need work of some
kind done, including yard work,
please come by the church office and
pick up an application. Please let
your friends, family and neighbors
know that these youth and adults
will be here. They want to help and
be of service. Call the church office
if you have any questions at 225261-4646.
Everyone is invited to try their hand at
solving Sudoku puzzles at the PrideChaneyville Branch this month! Stop by
the Library at any time, every day in June!
