2011-2012 ANNUAL REPORT
Planning for a Sustainable Future!
On behalf of the Board of Directors of Gilda's Club Desert Cities, an affiliate of the Cancer Support
Community, I am pleased to present our 2011-2012 annual report of programming, activities, and
the generosity of spirit which makes it all possible. Our strength comes from the people we are
serving who provide inspiration for a dedicated Board and professional staff.
I first came to Gilda's Club when my mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. My mom knew
about the services Gilda's provided and wanted to get involved. So four years ago on a hot summer
day, we walked through Gilda's red doors and that's when we knew that we had found a safe and
supportive place to begin our cancer journey. We were soon scheduled for our first Gilda's Club
experience, the intake interviews. Mom went to the Newly Diagnosed group while I went to the
Caregivers group. It wasn't long after our initial group experiences that I decided that I wanted to get more involved with
Gilda's and offer my skills in any way that could support the organization. Over the year my volunteer experiences
continued to increase and soon I became involved with the Gift of Giving Luncheon Committee, and eventually the
Development Committee, and one year later the Board of Directors. My greatest honor this past year was serving as
Board Chair and working with an incredible team of Board members, volunteers and staff to accomplish the goals and
objectives of this fantastic organization.
This past year we were successful in realizing goals that have been in the works for a few years. We initiated our Planned
Giving Program's Legacy Society and have received our first gift and early commitments; the Medical Resource Council
of local medical professionals has been redesigned to become even more effective and supportive; a strategic planning
session was held that has facilitated new action items to enable us to be more productive and efficient. Our programs and
services have been expanded to offer evening support groups, including Spanish-language groups in Cathedral City,
Mecca (through April 2012) and Thermal; in-season weekly support groups at Sun City in Palm Desert; Life After
Treatment and Couples During Cancer monthly groups, weekly Kid Support and Bereavement support groups; and a Town
Hall Meeting was held to share ideas and gather input from members and volunteers. There were many other
accomplishments that we can boast about, but best of all is knowing that we have become the premier community-based
cancer organization, providing free cancer support and services to all who need them. Last but not least, is knowing that
all funds raised stay here in our community to support all that we do. I am looking forward to my continued service on
the Board and to a great year under the leadership of our new Board Chair, Paul Golden.
As I follow in Sue's intrepid footsteps, goals for the coming year include expanding outreach and
fundraising efforts. I got involved with Gilda's Club Desert Cities through my dear friend, the late
Beverly Wallace. Beverly introduced me to co-founder Paula Berke, and before I knew it, my next
major construction project in 2003 was building the Gilda's Club Cathedral City Clubhouse. I've
been on the Gilda's Club Board ever since.
In addition to our Cathedral City, Sun City and Thermal offerings, we hope to expand programming
to Desert Hot Springs in 2013. We would also like to see an increase in referrals from local
hospitals, add new medical partners promoting our services through collateral materials, and
expand our engagement with the health care community. A social media campaign is also
underway, and if you haven't "liked" Gilda's Club Desert Cities on Facebook yet, I would encourage you to do so. In the
same vein, a concerted effort is underway to maintain an informative and interactive website, which, of course, is
gildasclubdesertcities.org.
As a nonprofit organization offering free cancer support for the whole family, the whole time, we are truly grateful for the
funding we receive as acknowledged in this report. Whether through tribute gifts, grants, sponsorships, donations,
special event proceeds, in-kind gifts, or the volunteers who help us make it all happen, our programs and services would
not be possible without community support. To help sustain our efforts, please consider Gilda's Club in your year-end
charitable contributions and estate plans.

or a loved one is affected by cancer,
you have attended an orientation with
a Clubhouse tour and program overview, and you have completed a
Customized Membership Plan (CMP). A
CMP is a privately determined program
of applicable services and the best
support group and/or services for each
member.

Since 2008, Gilda's mental health
professionals have been traveling
throughout the Valley to offer cancer
related presentations at businesses,
schools, and community organizations.
This coupled with regular monthly
travels to the Jerry Rummonds
Memorial Senior and Community Center
in Thermal with programming to better
serve the needs of Spanish-speaking
families living in the Thermal / Mecca
region. In early Fall 2011, we also
expanded our mobile programs and
began support groups for members
living at Sun City, Palm Desert.
