Rasset’s
International Drive Your Studebaker Day is a worldwide
event of the Studebaker Drivers Club. SDC Chapters and
Studebaker owners from all over the world will be driving
their cars and trucks all on the same day. Your North Star
Chapter is participating! This year we’ll be “Rollin’ To The
Rasset’s!” in Montrose, MN.
Jan and Mike Rasset would like everyone in the chapter
to drive their Studebakers to their home in Montrose
for coffee and donuts… and more! Jan and Mike have a
collection of vintage cars, snowmobiles, and motorcycles.
You will also enjoy their pole shed full of vintage
memorabilia! Plus, we’ll be taking photos for an
IDYSD article in Turning Wheels.
Here’s the plan: Jump in your Studebaker and head out
to Jan and Mike’s any time you want… just plan to arrive
by 1:00 p.m. You might want to get together with other
members for a breakfast or a meet-up spot and caravan
to Jan and Mike’s.

“Studies are cool!” is the new
SDC advertising campaign,
but with this summer late heat
wave, you’d want to be driving
around in a Studebaker with air
conditioning that blows very
cold. Were you at the fair on one
of those toasty days? It was hot.
But fall is just around the corner.
We kicked off September with a
great Orphan Car Show at the
Black Smith Lounge in Hugo.
About 265 vehicles with over 100
orphan brand vehicles. Check
out the pictures of the show
at our chapter web page. Thanks to the Car Show committee and members that
volunteered their time to help out. It is greatly appreciated.
Next up was the Friday evening Car Show and Cruise in Jordan, always a busy and
well attended event.
Then we have International Drive Your Studebaker Day on Saturday, September 14.
We will be meeting at Mike and Jan Rasset’s place in Montrose. Get out early and
drive around the metro area in your Studebaker. Call up a fellow club member and
meet up someplace for breakfast or coffee. Take pictures and videos. Thanks to Mike
and Jan for hosting the event. They always have great stuff to look at.
Coming up the end of the month on Saturday, September 28th is the Badger Wheels
Chapter Midwest Studebaker Only Swap in Menomonie, WI. Swap spaces are $5.
Our first fall chapter get together is Wednesday, October 2nd at Latuff’s Restaurant
in Plymouth. Meeting begins at 7:00 p.m., get there earlier if you’d like to have
dinner (on your own.)
The next weekend is the annual Drive For Kids. If you are interested in going on this
cruise from St. Paul to Redwing, contact Maynard Lemke.
Sandy and I had a great time at the SDC Meet in Colorado Springs. It was nice
seeing chapter members that have relocated (John and Barb Lidberg, Brian and
Aletta Millette) and other Studebaker friends from around the world. We went out
a few days early and visited friends from college in Boulder and had a great time
playing in the mountains. Hopefully other chapter members that were out there can
share some stories and pictures with you.
The Board will meet on Thursday, September 12, 7 to 9 p.m. at the meeting room
in the Plymouth Library (15700 36th Ave. N.) Agenda items include elections,
donations and replacing Board Director Bob Shaw (Bob resigned earlier this year).
I am looking for members to serve on the Election Committee and more importantly,
looking for members who are willing to serve as a chapter officer. If you are interested,
even just a little bit, please give me a call. We need your help.
If you have any issues you would like to bring to the Board, please contact me at the
number and email at the end of the column.
At the October meeting, we will share our experiences and hopefully some pictures
from the International Drive Your Studebaker Day. Remember to take lots of photos
of your Studebaker all around town.

Safety warning
Have you checked the fan on your
Studebaker lately. Sometimes you need
to sandblast them to really check them out,
but sometimes it is obvious.
Every time the engine revs, your fan blade
flexes... how many times has that 1950’s
era engine revved up in your machine?
Take a few minutes to check it out. It could
save you some headaches (new radiator,
hood, etc.)!

Valve Cover Races
August 17, 2013 – Maple Lake MN
It was the second beautiful Saturday in a row. Jim Gieselman was the first to arrive in
his 1953 Studebaker coupe. He saved us a places to park. We got their next in our 1962
convertible. Then came Gene Bauer in his 1962 GT Hawk, along with his neighbor driving
his 1927 Whippet. Tom Maeyaert came a bit later with his 1962 GT Hawk. Can you guess
what Studebaker showed up next? Jim Colombe’s famous 1950 Commander from Little Falls
that made the Studebaker Alaska Tour (Jim drove his Commamder, over 5,000 miles on that
trip that Joan and I went on too).
Other Studebakers were there too. A 1937 Coupe, a 1950 Pickup, a 1960 Lark, and a 1930
Sedan that was a rat-rod. It had to be less than three feet high and had a 4 cylinder Ford
engine in it. Jim Gieselman gave out a lot of wooden nickles and talked to the Studebaker
owners that were not in our club. I gave our one wooden nickle and a business card to a new
Studebaker owner, who said he was going to join our club.
If you are looking for a different type of car show this was it. No trophies, no dash plaques.
Just a lot of nice cars and trucks, including three big semis, farm tractors, riding lawn
mowers, motorcycles, and a huge swap meet. I could write a long list of what was for sale,
but one example was a pickup with at least 20 old outboard motors, all of them fully restored.
One of them was a 5 hp Firestone. I’ve never seen one of those before.
All of the antiques shops were open, and of course there were food vendors. The VFW
had grilled pork chops for $3.00. They were so good I only had two of them! The people
really liked looking at our Studebakers lined up in a row and we tried to answer all of their
questions. This is a show that you can bring everybody to as their is something for everyone
It the end, there were nine Studebakers at this show. How about next year we get a few more?
Maybe an Avanti or two.

Just Slightly Ahead Of It’s Time
Here are the official rules. You have plenty
of time to build one and transport it to the
50th International Meet in Dover Deleware
next Summer!
Studebaker Valve Cover Racer Rules:
1. Must be a Studebaker valve cover.
2. Total weight cannot exceed 10 pounds.
An official scale is usually available.
3. Total length must not exceed 10% over
stock length of the original valve cover.
4. Dimensions may be no more than
12” high or 12” wide.
5. No sharp edges or sharp protrusions on
the racer.
6. Must be gravity powered. Absolutely
no other power source allowed.
2014 Zone Meet
Attention–This Just In:
The Badger Wheels Chapter will host the
2014 Upper Mississippi Valley Zone Meet
on September 26-28, in Menomonie, WI.
The host hotel will be the Econolodge Inn
and Suites, Menomonie, just off of exit #41
on I-94. This will also tie in with the Annual
Midwest Studebaker Only Swap Meet on
the fourth weekend in September.

Longroof R amblings
Time for a road trip
It had been a couple of years since
the last cross country excursion, so
Colorado Springs in July seemed
like a plan. Our last trip took us
to Indiana for daughter Kristen’s
basketball tournament, then on
to Vermont to pick up my oldest
daughter Adrienne (after three
years of mission work) and a visit
with my sister.
So the trip was set and off we go…
but let me rewind a couple of years. I was
watching the tube when the phone rang.
The screen said John Lidberg. I jumped
up and answered “Hello Mr. Lidberg.”
We exchanged pleasantries and then
John said “Our club is putting on the
49th Annual Meet in 2013 during 4th
of July week. He was very excited they
were going to be hosting the meet and
said “you and Carol should come out.”
Fast forward to December 27, 2012.
Kristen tore her ACL during a basketball
game, ending her junior season and
eliminating her last summer of AAU
basketball. What does that have to do
with anything you ask? Well it meant
no basketball trips this summer so
Colorado Springs was a definite
possibility. After a short discussion
Carol said “sure, sounds like fun.”
So on June 29, we loaded up the 2007
long roof (the station wagon thing is
an affliction of mine) and off we go.
Our destination for Saturday night –
Kearney, Nebraska.
We have stayed in Kearney a couple
of times in the past during ski trips to
Colorado, so we thought we would see
if the Midtown Western Inn was still in
business. I went on-line and sure enough,
still going strong, and only $59.00 a
night! While on-line I came across an
event on Sunday, June 30. The 100 Year
Anniversary of the Lincoln Highway.
Started in 1913, it connected Boston and
San Francisco – Kearney being the half
way point, 1733 miles from each city. To
commemorate 100 years, they planned
a caravan from each coast, meeting at
Kearney with a celebration and parade.
Another “car event” that I could work in!
It was quite the parade. There were old
cars and new, and even a bunch of classic
old travel trailers, one really cool 1947
Airstream pulled by a restored 1947 M
pickup. After the parade, we looked at
some of the cars (and trailers) and then
it was on the road for the six hour run to
Colorado Springs. Two lanes of blacktop,
not much traffic and 85 mph, what
could have been better? (Duh, I guess
having a Studebaker wagon that could
run at 85 mph for hours with the air on
would be! Maybe someday…)
We were not staying at the host hotel,
so Monday morning we got up to get
some breakfast at the Waffle House
(that’s another story) but thought we
would buzz through the parking lot
and see how many Studebakers were
there. As we pulled up to the Stude
only section, there was a guy on a golf
cart that looked familiar. Of course
it was Mr. Lidberg. I double parked,
got out and walked up to say hi.
“Bob Stude” he said “what are you
doing here and what happened to
your hair?” Same old John, good to
know that some things never change.
We were blocking traffic, so I said
“See you later” and off we went.
The next five days were very relaxing and
enjoyable. There was a really good turn
out of North Star members, including
Brian and Aleta Millette. It was nice
to be able to spend some time together
catching up, I hadn’t seen them in over
ten years.
There were side trips up the mountains
including a run up Pikes Peak. It was on
Wednesday, a couple of days after the
annual hill climb and the “skid marks”
were still fresh! It was about 80° at the
bottom, and after the 19 mile drive to

the summit (14,110 feet) the temp was
about 45° with a stiff breeze. Carol was
glad she had a jacket along, too bad we
didn’t have any oxygen bottles!
Thursday was the concours and I got
to run around with John in his truck
passing out water to the judges. Then
Dean and I walked the lots checking
out the cars and taking photos (see the
bottom of pages 3 thru 7).
Thursday night was Fun Night in
Cripple Creek, about a 45 minute drive.
Dean and Sandy and Todd Langenfeld
joined Carol and I in the longroof and
we drove to the casino for a western
BBQ. Denny and Carol Borich (below)
Carol and I decided we would head for
home Friday, so after strolling around
Manitou Springs and having a nice
lunch, it was time to get back on the
road. I decided to take the toll road
to avoid downtown Denver. I exited
the tollway and started heading east.
I have driven I-76 many times and after
a couple of hours, something seemed
wrong. I had gotten on I-70, instead
of I-76 and was heading for Kansas.
After checking the map (ya, I’m old
school) we decide highway 385 on the
eastern side of Colorado was the best
shot back to I-76 (we had decided to
stay in Kearney again so I had to get
north). It turned out to be a great detour.
Rolling hills turned to golden wheat
fields, then back to rolling hills many
times over. I also was amused by the
road signs about snow plowing.
We don’t have it so bad after all!
As I was making a sweeping right curve,
I saw an old garage with a bunch of old
Fords scattered about. It was kind of a
time-warp, all these vintage cars in the
middle of no where. Too bad it wasn’t
Studebakers. The rest of the trip was
uneventful and we were back home
Saturday as planned.
All in all, it was a great week and my
wrong turn reinforced my dream of
someday taking a cross country trip in
a Studebaker station wagon without
getting on a freeway!

dinner. After chowing down, nobody
felt like gambling, so we took a drive
around Cripple Creek and headed back
to Colorado Springs. It was such a nice
night that we stopped for a night cap
and sat outside in the cool mountain air
at one of Colorado’s many Brew Pubs.

A Trip Thru the North Land Wheels Chapter’s 42nd Annual Swap Meet & Car Show
I arrived at the fairgrounds just before
6:00 a.m. on Sunday. Usually there are
vendors lined up to register but Jim already
had some signed in and headed to their
spots. As the vendors were coming in we had
about ten minutes of light sprinkles, then
out came the sun and we were blessed with
warm and sunny for the rest of the day.
We were not jammed full outside like last
year, but we certainly filled up most of
the available spaces. Not quite full in the
building either, but considering attendance
at other shows and meets we have been to
this year, I think we did very well this year.
It is always interesting to catch up with
people from previous years and get to know
new people who came to our meet for the
first time. In talking with some of our local
vendors, they were very happy with the show
and did quite well in selling their goods.
As usual, we had a vast amount of car,
truck, tractor, and outdoor sports parts
and equipment available at the outside
vendor spots. Again this year, there was a
great variety of goods being sold inside –
glassware, furniture, dolls, Alpaca products,
jewelry, plants, coins, clothing items, and
general knick-knacks.
I had a chance to get out and walk thru the
meet and see some of the 139 cars in the
show. It looked like that area was doing very
well also. There were some really beautiful,
neat, cool, funky (just to hit on a few
adjectives) vehicles out there. Again, I had
many comments from entrants on what a
great car show it was.
Seems everyone had a real nice time. And,
of course, Shirley Van Dell was there. She
was chauffeured around in the golf cart,
checking out the show and talking with
many of the folks, some of whom have
been vendors since the early days.
Our Club members work so well together
and I think we put on another great show
and swap meet again this year. And
considering the weather this year, a big
thank you to Mother Nature for shining
down on us!
