Lap Swimming Etiquette 101
Swimmers arriving at a pool should do
three things before entering the water:
1 . Make note of lane signage (Fast,
Medium, Slow, Closed, etc .) .
2 . Spend a few minutes observing and
roughly timing the pace of swimmers
already in the pool .
3 . Select a lane containing swimmers
moving as closely as possible to the
pace that one realistically expects to
swim throughout his or her entire
workout .
Once you choose a lane, carefully
check the position and speed of other
swimmers before entering, preferably
to one side of the lane . Incumbent
swimmers have an initial right of way
and may need a lap or two to adjust to
your presence .
During a swim, swimmers should
observe and respect the pace and
workout routines of other swimmers in
their lane by:
1 . Staying constantly aware of other
swimmers’ presence (eg . move up
a lane if you are constantly passing
swimmers or down a lane if you are
constantly being passed) .
2 . Explicitly informing other swimmers
of your intentions (eg . gently but
distinctly touch the feet of a swimmer
before you pass them . If you get
touched, continue to the wall then
stop in the corner to let the faster
swimmer pass) .
3 . Knowing common lap swimming
etiquette (eg . allow swimmers doing
faster strokes to swim ahead) .
4 . Applying common sense at all times
(eg . share the space as best you can . . .
no one has a right to “own” a lane
indefinitely or insist on their own
idiosyncratic rules .)
The nature of lap swimming is incredibly
dynamic and can change many times
throughout a single workout . When
in doubt, communicate with people
in your lane and, if all else fails, ask the
lifeguard . It is not the role of a lifeguard
to constantly “police” the lanes, but they
are happy to answer questions about
common conventions and provide
suggestions for possible solutions .
Happy Swimming!!!

How To Use Fitness To Fuel Your Life
We are now several months into the year and many of us
likely started 2016 with renewed intentions to get fit . Yet,
if we are to believe what studies say, just 10% of us will still
be on track with the goals we set back in January . That’s
a disheartening statistic but it speaks to an issue so many
people struggle with: how can you turn health and fitness
goals into reality – once and for all!
As a personal trainer, I’ve worked with clients in all stages
of life with varying fitness abilities . I also manage a team of
personal trainers through my company Funk~tion For Life .
We have decades of experience helping clients live their
best life through fitness . Let me share with you the top
three things you can do to make 2016 the year that you
commit to optimum health and wellbeing .
1. REFLECT ON YOUR GOALS
The better you understand the real reason you want to
get fit, the greater likelihood of success . Start with the
first reasons that come to mind and then dig deeper to
determine how achieving those goals will help you to lead
your best life . For many of us, aesthetic reasons are often
the first reason we cite for wanting to exercise . But ask
yourself why you want to lose weight or increase muscle
tone and you’ll likely find an answer with the power to truly
inspire you .
by Nicole Funk
You might realize that by exercising you will increase your
energy to play with your children, help manage stress,
improve performance at work or maintain the lifestyle you
love well into your golden years . For example, one of my
long-time clients came to understand that the real reason
she wanted to workout with a personal trainer was to
enable her to continue to maintain her farm and look after
her horses as she aged .
The bottom line is - by committing to a goal that really
matters to you, you are far more likely to succeed .
2. FIND YOUR CHEERLEADERS
Once you have identified the right goals for you, the next
step is to build your support team . This can be as simple
as telling your family and friends about the reason you
are prioritizing exercise . This will make your commitment
feel real and help the people in your life understand the
benefits that will come from your time in the gym, in the
pool or on the trail .
You can take it one step further by deliberately
surrounding yourself with people that have a positive
influence on your life . There is a lot of truth to the concept
that we ‘become who we hang out with’ . Make sure you
spend time with people who will support and encourage
you to achieve your goals . Look for ways to find new
cheerleaders - meet like-minded people at a group
exercise class, work out with one of our personal trainers or
join an activity group or sports team .
3. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY
There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to exercise . What
works for your friend may not necessarily be the right
approach for you . Also be aware that what worked for you
10 years ago might not be what your body needs today . As
a mom of three, this is a lesson I have learned first-hand .
Meet the team! From L-R: Kelsey Jones, Nicole Funk, Mhaire O’Shea, Greg Stephens
About Nicole Funk and Funk~tion For Life
A good way to personalize your fitness plan is to consult
with a personal trainer . The Funk~tion For Life team of
trainers who provide training at the community centre are
highly educated, experienced and also trained to listen and
assess your individual needs .
For Nicole, fitness is integral to health and wellbeing. This
is how Nicole has lived her life since an early age – excelling
at sport, passionate about fitness and an advocate for
investing in health. Today Nicole is sought-after as a
personal trainer, helping clients use fitness as the path to living their best life.
With a plan that is designed for your body – and your life –
you will be less likely to succumb to injuries or fall off track .
This is especially true for people who are new to exercise or
getting back in the saddle after a major life event, such as
having a baby or recovering from an injury or health issue .
Through her company, Funk~tion For Life, Nicole and her team of first-class
personal trainers offer tailored personal training programs for all ages and fitness
abilities. Funk-tion For Life works with Recreation Penticton to create individual
training plans, provide gym orientations and offer dynamic group exercise classes.
Lastly, know that when your life gets crazy, exercise has the
power to bring clarity and calm . After all, who doesn’t feel
better after a good workout?

Getting Fit and Staying Fit Beyond 50
It’s Easy At The Community Centre!
As we grow older, living an active lifestyle becomes more
important than ever . Implementing regular physical
activity into your daily life improves mood, reduces
stress, combats disease and helps us manage our weight .
Whether you’re a newbie to regular exercise or have been
active for years, the Community Centre has everything you
need to get fit and stay fit through your 50’s and beyond .
Fitness Room Orientations for “Active Agers”
Let’s face it, the gym can be an intimidating place if you’re
unfamiliar with the equipment and don’t know how to do
the exercises . For only $12, one of our certified personal
trainers will take you through a 1 .5 hour long fitness room
orientation where you’ll learn proper technique and how
to use all the equipment safely and effectively . It’s a great
way to gain confidence in the gym and begin putting
together a regular fitness routine of your own (see pg . 57) .
50+ Group Fitness Program
New this Spring is a group fitness program specific to the
50+ population! This class focusses on the basics of being
physically fit through balance, coordination and strength,
all in an age friendly environment . The intention is to
help keep older adults strong, healthy and mobile while
integrating a regular exercise routine into their lives . We’ll
incorporate free weights, resistance bands, circuits and
much more (see pg . 57) .
www.penticton.ca/recreation
Aquatic Fitness Programs
If you find that exercise on dry land is a little too tough on
your muscles, bones and joints, try an aquafit class! Water
is a great exercise environment as it reduces the weight
bearing component of exercise but provides enough
resistance to get your muscles working and your heart
pumping . You can adjust your own intensity during each
class if needed and reward yourself with a soothing hot tub
afterwards! (see pg . 59) .
Drop in Sports
If you’re a little more sport minded and like being part of
a team, stop by any day of the week to try out some of
our adult drop in sports . We have 4 sports to choose from
including badminton, pickleball, basketball and volleyball .
During the week the volleyball times are designated for
ages 55+ only, and if you haven’t heard about Pickleball by
now, its by far the most popular sport among 50+ adults in
North America, so come try it out! (see pg . 8) .
Outdoor Programs
It doesn’t get much better than breathing in the fresh
Okanagan air, so maybe taking an outdoor program is your
best option for fitness this spring/summer . All programs
are instructor led and we have a wide variety of offerings
such as tennis, kayaking, mountain biking and stand up
paddle boarding . It’s a great way to get outside, meet some
new people, learn some new skills, and get some exercise!
(see pg . 60) .

Puncturevine
HELP PREVENT THE SPREAD OF INVASIVE
TREE SPECIES
Puncturevine is an invasive
European plant that has
invaded dry, sandy and gravely
soils throughout the Okanagan and
Similkameen valleys . Puncturevine
forms dense mats along road
shoulders, vacant lots, beaches and
unpaved parking sites, its stems
reaching up to 10 feet (3 metres) in length .
The following trees are unwanted in our
landscapes because they grow aggressively,
seed/spread prolifically and establish
quickly in areas including lanes, boulevards
and landscapes .
It is a summer annual plant which produces spiny
seedpods that puncture tires and stick painfully into the
feet of people and wildlife .
PREVENT new infestations by seeding or planting
disturbed soils with desirable plant species; by mulching
(3-4” deep) and checking sources of fill, gravel and topsoil
for contaminants .
Russian Olive( Elaeagnus angustifolia),
Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima),
Siberian Elm (Ulmus pumila)
Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia)
Become familiar with these plants and
remove them from your boulevard or
landscape while they are young and more
manageable .
MONITOR your property for new plants beginning in May
and then again every three weeks until frost . New plants
need to be continually destroyed to ensure seeds do not
form . It is also important for landowners to be able to
recognize puncturevine at an early stage of growth, as this
is when it can most easily be controlled, as opposed to
when it is large and seedpods have matured .
Dogs Off Leash Areas
CONTROL infestations by hand-pulling or through
chemical treatments . The best method of controlling
puncturevine is to prevent establishment by destroying
the first plants found in an area before seeds begin to form . Young puncturevine plants are easily controlled by hoeing,
shallow tillage or by carefully hand-pulling plants
OFF LEASH PARKS:
WORK WITH your neighbours and local agencies to stop
the spread of puncturevine in your community .
For more information about puncturevine, or to report
new infestations, please contact:

Invasive Species Society)

Canada Goose
Management Program
A Regional Success
The average goose eats 5 pounds a day, and defecates
1 .5 pounds per day . This happens at your parks, beaches
and school grounds . Concerns for public health, potential
impacts to the local economy and the natural environment
prompted the development of an Action plan to help
control problems associated with the increasing goose
population .
GOOSE PROOF YOUR PROPERTY
There are simple steps you can take to make your property
less attractive to geese:
•
•
•
•
Cover planters and turn basins upside-down
Don’t leave tires outside
Seal boat sheds and boats
If you tarp boats, don’t let the tarps sag, but create
a peaked “tent”
• And if you leave for the winter…please “Goose
Proof” your property before you go
REPORT BANDED GEESE
The Okanagan Valley Goose Management Committee is
comprised of representatives from municipalities, regional
districts and interested stakeholders with a common goal
to maintain a naturally sustainable level of resident geese
in the Okanagan Valley and to minimize the risk to human
health and safety .
Some local geese have been banded with leg-bands as
part of a regional goose monitoring program . Help us
monitor local goose population activities - if you observe
geese with yellow, red or other leg bands please report the
number of geese seen, location and date to
www .okanagangooseplan .com .
This is a Valley-wide concern and requires everybody’s
support and participation . Here are some ways that you
can support this program:
For further information please go to
www.okanagangooseplan.com, or contact the
City of Penticton Parks Department at 250-490-2500,
or [email protected]
PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE GEESE!
Feeding geese and ducks contributes to their
overpopulation and encourages them to congregate at
parks and beaches - increasing risks to human health,
damage to property and reducing the quality of parks,
beaches and recreational areas . Feeding geese and ducks is
unhealthy for the waterfowl .
HELP LOCATE AND REPORT GOOSE NEST SITES –
ADDLING WORKS!
Since 2007 the annual Valley-wide egg addling program is
working as Valley ‘resident’ goose population numbers are
not increasing . Egg addling has prevented over 8,500 new
resident geese from entering the local population .
With your help this program can continue to be successful .
Please report nest site locations, either on public or private
property, to the Addling Team in early spring (March-April)
- nests are guarded by a pair of geese, usually located near
water . Egg addling is an approved, effective and humane
method to reduce the number of geese entering the local
population, and must be done under federal permit by
trained personnel .
REPORT NESTS at 1-877-943-3209 or
www.okanagangooseplan.com.
